One of Colorado’s premier ensembles, the Boulder Phil is a critically acclaimed professional orchestra serving Boulder and the greater metro-Denver region. Known for innovative concert programming presented at the highest artistic level and a growing commitment to authentic community engagement, the Boulder Phil continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be Boulder’s orchestra.
For over half a century, we have been defined by the artistry of our talented musicians, the support of our extraordinary patrons, and the ongoing creative collaborations with partner organizations encompassing the arts, sciences, nature, youth, and social services. As we celebrate our 65th Season, the Boulder Phil continues to strive to present once-in-a-lifetime performances, inspire the next generation with school-age education programs, and pioneer community-focused projects that bring music to all. Thank you for celebrating this monumental anniversary with us!
It is the mission of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra to enhance the Boulder region’s artistic and educational cultures through orchestral excellence, embracing diversity, and connecting people to music, music to ideas, and people to people.
Join us in celebrating this milestone — four decades of performance, education, and collaboration!
The origins of Boulder Ballet began with the Ballet Arts Studios, founded in Denver and Boulder by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette in the 1970s. In 1981 the Boulder studio was purchased by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. The next year they started the first performing company, originally known as Boulder City Ballet. In 1995, the company and school became known as Boulder Ballet.
Our rich history includes bringing classical, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to venues that range from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch. Boulder Ballet currently performs in Macky Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, Vance Brand Auditorium, the Dairy ARTS Center, the Stanley Hotel, Lakewood Cultural Center, Littleton Town Hall, and outdoor amphitheaters in the Denver metro area for our summertime events.
Since its founding, the professional company has been led by several notable former dancers, including Miljenko Banovic (Zagreb Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre), Peter Davison, Ana Claire, and Lance Hardin. With the 2022–23 season, we are thrilled to welcome our new artistic director, Ben Needham-Wood.
Our Education and Engagement Programming brings new and diverse musical experiences to more than 10,000 people from across Boulder County and beyond. Our robust educational programs continue to connect, inspire, and enrich people of all ages through music. Boulder Phil is grateful for the generous support of individuals, organizations, and communities that make these programs possible.

This is a time for joy and wonder. The holidays are a celebration of what we most cherish in our lives and are an opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime. As the newly appointed Artistic Director of Boulder Ballet, I could not be more proud and grateful to be sharing this Holiday Season with you all.
The Nutcracker is one of ballet’s most iconic traditions. Performed in nearly every major city across the United States, the story of a young child’s fantastic adventure inspires us to dream and dance. We get to imagine a beautiful world, full of characters and delights, and the music invites us to move with its melodies. The Nutcracker is one of the most precious gifts any ballet company can offer because it amplifies the strength of our community.
Artists of all ages come together to create a magical production, allowing today’s generation of professionals to share a legacy with aspiring artists-to-be. It not only preserves the art we love, it becomes the launching pad for a new generation of cultural innovation.
Boulder Ballet is celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season — a historic milestone for any company! In that spirit of innovation, we’re excited to share that this year’s Nutcracker features a brand new generation of choreography. While the sets and costumes honor the previous productions of Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker, the movements have been redesigned to reflect the unique talents of the dancers in our school and professional company. It is incredibly challenging to reimagine something so familiar, but everyone involved has shared a truly special gift with this new production.
I would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who has been part of this adventure — the professional artists in our company, our staff and administrative team, our educators and coaches, the young artists in our school, the parents and families, the board of directors, and all those who have contributed to Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker over this company’s 40-year history. We would not be here today without you.
Thank you for sharing your holiday with us at Boulder Ballet. We wish you another season of joy and wonder and hope to see you again at a future performance. Cheers!

The Stahlbaum family hosts their annual Christmas Eve party, inviting all their family and friends to celebrate the holiday. Their young daughter, Clara, is especially excited. Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives and shares his magic tricks, guests dance joyously, and there are presents for all the children. Clara is delighted by the gift of a Nutcracker but becomes distraught when it accidentally breaks. Luckily, Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and fixes the Nutcracker. After the guests leave, Clara falls asleep awaiting the magic of Christmas morning.
But strange things begin to happen when midnight strikes. An army of mice and rats, led by the fearsome Rat King, appear. As Clara struggles to get away, her Nutcracker awakens and leads an army of toy soldiers into battle with the Rat King. When all appears lost, Clara knocks the Rat King to the floor, saving the Nutcracker.
The Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince and leads a grown-up Clara on a journey through the snow-covered forest and the realm of angels to the Land of Sweets. They are welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The court players recount the battle and Clara’s heroic act. The Sugar Plum Fairy thanks Clara with a celebration of dances from all of the Sweets.
When Clara awakens, she is back in her own bed. With the Land of Sweets still on her mind, she wonders whether it was all a dream…or is it a dream yet to come?

Let me tell you about my happy place. . . It’s somewhere I go that puts a huge smile on my face. It’s a place where I feel creative, adventurous and relaxed. It’s a spot where I make new memories and relive some of the best small moments of my life. Sounds kind of nice, right? Wherever your happy place is, you can find it in Downtown Boulder.
