About the Boulder Phil

As one of Colorado’s premier ensembles, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is creating a new model for American orchestras through dynamic performances that reflect our community’s own values, creativity, and sense of place. Voted “Best of Boulder” yet again in 2014, today’s Boulder Phil is bucking national trends with growing, enthusiastic audiences under the vision and leadership of Music Director Michael Butterman.
The Boulder Phil’s main concert series—broadcast state-wide on Colorado Public Radio—is presented at Macky Auditorium, a historic jewel on the University of Colorado campus. From multi-genre productions featuring dance, choral and visual elements to concerts with a unique hometown flavor, the Phil’s imaginative programming has resulted in increasing numbers of sold-out concerts and nationwide notice in Symphony Magazine. In recent seasons the Phil has collaborated with an impressive 45 local organizations, encompassing arts, science, nature, youth, social services and more. By going beyond simply performing great music, we strive to connect ever more people to the inspiring power of orchestral music. Recognized as “Boulder’s premier orchestra” (Boulder Weekly), the Boulder Phil is comprised of the top freelance musicians from Colorado’s Front Range and beyond. Founded in 1958, the Boulder Phil became a fully professional ensemble under the leadership of Theodore Kuchar, whose tenure as music director began in 1996. Today the Boulder Phil reaches audiences of over 20,000, with performances from Arvada to Highlands Ranch as well as regular invitations to perform at the prestigious Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek.

The Boulder Phil strives to inspire the next generation of music-lovers through Discovery Concerts that have reached thousands of 4th and 5th grade students in 28 schools across three counties. For decades the Phil has also fostered new talent with the annual Young Artist Concerto Competition, and Boulder Phil musicians provide mentorship through side-by-side concerts with the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras and Front Range Youth Orchestras. In all these ways, the Boulder Phil strives to be at the center of our community’s cultural fabric.

About the Boulder Ballet
The origins of Boulder Ballet begin with the Ballet Arts Studio, founded by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette and British dancer Barbara Demaree. The first performing company, Boulder City Ballet, was founded in 1982 by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. In 1985 the company changed its name to Boulder Ballet Ensemble, and in 1995 to Boulder Ballet. Since 1989, Boulder Ballet has enjoyed a partnership with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra in presenting classical ballets complete with professional scenery, costumes, lighting designs, and casts of up to 100 dancers. Our rich history includes bringing classic, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to an audience that stretches from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch, in venues from the 2,000-seat opera house Macky Auditorium, to historic Boulder Theater in downtown Boulder, and to outdoor amphitheaters throughout the Denver-metro area. Boulder Ballet has had a number of strong influences including the versatile artistry of past artistic directors Milenko Banovich (Zagred Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), and John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre). Artistic Directors since 2004, Ana Claire and Peter Davison have continued to build on the proud tradition of artistic excellence through innovation. They have challenged their dancers and enlightened their audiences with the versatile productions from the contemporary Stepping Out, to the classic The Nutcracker, to the timeless tale of Cinderella. With a profound respect for their art, the duo has expanded and refined the company’s season to 20 performances reaching over 20,000 in the Denver Metro area and beyond. The Boulder Ballet School (BBS) provides ballet training for all ages, pre-school through adult, in a uniquely artistic and creative atmosphere. As a professional-track ballet school, BBS challenges students dedicated to pursuing dance as a career, but also welcomes those who dance purely for enjoyment. The Director of the BBS since 1999, Ana Claire has successfully recruited an outstanding faculty with international performing and teaching experience. The seven-level curriculum is designed to produce wellrounded artists who achieve not only technical proficiency but also an essential expressive quality in their dancing. A unique feature of the school is the largest dance program in the region developed specifically for boys. Geared towards ages nine and above, this program includes Boyz Dance — a mix of dance, mime and juggling — and Boys Ballet, which focuses on the male classical technique. Our students have excelled in a number of competitions, including the world’s largest, the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), where BBS students have won first-place awards and the regional Grand Prix (single highest award), and have been invited to perform in New York City among the world’s finest young dancers. Former BBS students have gone on to dance with world-class companies including American Ballet Theatre, Ballet British Columbia, Hubbard Street Dance, Mark Morris Dance Group, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, England’s Royal Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet, to name a few. Stepping Out 2015
Boulder Ballet unveils the cutting edge of ballet technique and artistry in our annual contemporary show. Each season, we invite innovative choreographers to create new and imaginative works for a unique and varied evening of dance and theater. Stepping Out 2015 will present worldpremiere works set to live piano music. Choreographers include Ana Claire, Peter Davison, Kathryn Elliott, Becky Jancosko, and James Wallace. These artists will create contemporary dance inspired by a range of periods from the Baroque to the future. Storybook Ballet – Mary Poppins Every year, Boulder Ballet School brings a familiar tale to life through the beautiful art of dance in Storybook Ballet. These productions feature original choreography, costumes, and music and are performed by students of Boulder Ballet School. This year, Storybook Ballet reprises its 2008 production Mary Poppins, with original choreography by Ana Claire and original music by Victoria Ebel-Sabo. The ballet will be performed by over 80 student dancers ages 8 and up. An inspirational experience for performers and audiences of all ages!

Boulder Ballet’s Commitment to Community Boulder Ballet Artistic Director Peter Davison once said, “Everything we do grows out of community.” He was not just speaking of choreography and artistic vision. He was also speaking of the impact of sharing and connecting through the art of ballet. Boulder Ballet has grown and flourished for more than a quarter of a century on the Front Range; our roots are deep in Colorado. So, too, is our commitment to community through education and outreach programs. Since its inception more than a decade ago, Steps in Time remains a much-requested educational outreach program. Originally choreographed by Ana Claire, the program seamlessly illustrates the history of ballet and its continuing influence on all forms of dance. Through beautiful choreography, humorous narration, and powerful dancing by our professional company, Steps in Time moves students beyond stereotypes and opens their eyes to the precision, expression, and athleticism of ballet. Students of diverse backgrounds are exposed to an early and enriching live arts experience in the comfort and security of their own schools. Each year this lively, interactive education program is presented to over 4,000 students in five different Front Range counties. In particular, Boulder Ballet reaches out to a large number of Title 1 schools–often with few arts resources–and students in free/reduced lunch programs. For many of these children, it is their first exposure to ballet, and they love it. Boulder Ballet’s artist-in-residence program, Poetry of Motion, features a Boulder Ballet instructor in residence at the school for up to two weeks. This program is designed to make a long-lasting impact on the minds and hearts of the students through the integration of dance and movement into the school’s curriculum. Poetry of Motion enables students to explore their world through observing, moving their bodies, and interacting with familiar objects and each other. Boulder Ballet is equally committed to the successful community outreach programs Open Previews and Ballet in the Park. Since 2005, we have reached over 16,000 underserved individuals who are frequently excluded from exposure to the performing arts. These two programs were specifically designed to remove the financial barrier to participation. Through Open Previews, Boulder Ballet works with key social-service organizations to distribute free tickets to full-scale final dress rehearsals of our major productions– including the ever popular Nutcracker in collaboration with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. Our free, outdoor summer concert series, Ballet in the Park, also reaches out to low-income families, teens in crisis, struggling single parents, and seniors on fixed incomes. Our Nutcracker Story Act One It’s Christmas Eve and a young girl, Clara, is put to bed by her parents as they leave for a party. Quickly asleep, she dreams she is at a festive Christmas Eve party in a strange home, surrounded by family and friends. Clara’s uncle, the mysterious Drosselmeyer, arrives and entertains the children with magic tricks, juggling, and life-size dancing dolls. He gives Clara a nutcracker doll that she adores, but her brother Fritz is envious and steals it, tripping and breaking it. Magically, Drosselmeyer quickly mends it with his handkerchief. The party ends and Clara goes off to bed, forgetting her nutcracker doll. When she returns to look for it in the darkened living room, she finds Drosselmeyer still there. Suddenly, midnight strikes and strange things begin to happen. Human-sized mice dart through the shadows, the Christmas tree has grown to astounding heights, and huge rats appear, led by the fearsome Rat King. Then toy soldiers and the Nutcracker (also large as life) march in to protect Clara and engage the rats in a fierce battle. When the Rat King strikes the Nutcracker to the floor, Clara takes her shoe and swings a fatal blow to the Rat King’s head. The battle over, Clara finds herself in a snow-covered forest, and discovers that she has become a young woman. Then she sees that the Nutcracker, recovering from the battle, is now a handsome prince. They embark together on a journey through a snow-covered forest with dancing snowflakes and frost.
Act Two Continuing to dream, Clara and her Nutcracker Prince are led by Drosselmeyer to the realm of angels, who escort them to the Land of Sweets. They are welcomed by dignitaries who present them to the queen, the Sugar Plum Fairy. She asks how her visitors won admission to her land and the Prince reenacts the battle with the Rat King including Clara’s heroic rescue. The people of the Land of Sweets rejoice over the victory and award Clara a crown and the key to their realm. The Sugar Plum Fairy delights Clara and her Prince with a tour of her domain. Dancers from Spain, Arabia, China and Russia entertain the visitors. The Mirlitons, dancing to the music of reed flutes, and a larger-than-life Mother Goose and her nursery rhymes dance too. Next, the Sugar Plum Fairy herself dances for the guests. Then Clara and her Prince walk with other couples in a garden of waltzing flowers and are inspired to perform a pas de deux of their own. As the people of the Land of Sweets reappear, it’s time to leave. Clara awakens from her dream, once more a little girl. But then, Drosselmeyer appears and places her nutcracker doll in her arms before vanishing. Was her dream real – or is this a dream yet to come?

Artistic Directors ANA CLAIRE is the Director of the Boulder Ballet School, which has more than tripled in size under her direction. Although born in Boulder, Ana grew up on a ranch near Fairplay, Colorado. At the age of eight she saw American Ballet Theatre perform Swan Lake and fell in love with the art of ballet. In an extraordinary gift of support, Ana’s mother then drove her to ballet classes in Denver throughout her childhood. Ana has studied ballet with Maxine Williamson, Fernando Schaffenberg, Milenko Banovich, Barbara Demaree, and Larry Boyette. She has performed with Fort Worth Ballet, Fort Worth Opera, David Taylor Dance Theater, Aladdin Theater, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, Jan Justis Dance Company, and 3rd Law Dance/ Theater, among others. Ana was a principal ballerina with Boulder Ballet for many years, and was twice voted “Boulder’s Best” by the Daily Camera. For 21 years she has produced, directed, and choreographed an annual Storybook Ballet, each with original music, scenery, and costumes created in collaboration with local artists, and co-choreographed the 1998, ‘99, and all productions since 2001 of Boulder Ballet’s Nutcracker. Ana originated Boulder Ballet’s acclaimed outreach program Steps in Time which has been performed at numerous schools throughout the Boulder/ Denver area. Ana studied dance pedagogy at Texas Christian University, attended the teacher training workshop with former New York City Ballet principal Jillana, and has over 27 years of teaching experience. She is a passionate teacher, dedicated to helping students achieve technical excellence while nurturing their individual artistry, and many of her students have gone on to professional careers in dance. PETER DAVISON brings over 38 years of diverse performing experience to the Boulder Ballet. His childhood idols were Alexander Calder and Batman, influences that led to training in visual art, juggling, and dance. While a teenager, Peter began his professional career street performing in Los Angeles, and as a variety artist for Hollywood films such as Xanadu with Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John. He moved to Boulder in 1980. Peter studied ballet with Larry Boyette, Ana Claire, Barbara Demaree, Finis Jhung and Donald Mahler; modern dance with Danelle Helander, and tap with Susan Hadley and Lynn Dally, among others. In 1982 Peter became a founding member of the trio Airjazz, with whom he appeared at venues such as the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, BAM, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Peter has also danced with David Taylor Dance Theater, Jan Justis Dance Company, Kim Robards Dance, 3rd Law Dance/Theater, and has performed with Boulder Ballet since 1987. He has performed solo shows at the Carmel Performing Arts Festival, Cincinnati Playhouse, Utah Arts Tour, Seattle’s Moisture Festival, and the 5-3-1 Festival of New Juggling and Object Theatre in Helsinki, Finland, and has appeared on the CBS, BBC, and Fox television networks. Peter has received numerous awards and grants including the Arts Innovation Award from the Colorado Federation of the Arts and the Performance Fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts. Peter’s choreography has been performed by Ballet Nouveau Colorado, David Taylor Dance Theater, and Saint Paul Ballet, among others, and he is a recipient of the 2009 Ballet Builders Award for Choreography, from New Choreographers on Pointe in New York City.

Company Dancers JULIANNA BICKI began her training with the International Ballet School. She later continued her training with Zamuel Ballet School, Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts, and Ballet Society of Colorado Springs. While training at Walnut Hill, Julianna was honored to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2008. Julianna has twice won first place at the annual Esther Geoffrey Young Dancers Competition, and has won fourth and fifth places at Denver Ballet Guild Competitions. Julianna danced with Texas Ballet Theater under the direction of Ben Stevenson O.B.E. as a trainee during their 2010-11 season, and since then has performed with the Colorado Jazz Dance Company, Ballet Frontier (Texas), Owen/Cox Dance Group (Kansas City, MO), Napoles Dance Theater (San Francisco), and Arc Dance Company (Seattle). This is Julianna’s first season with Boulder Ballet. CLAIRE DAVISON (Guest Artist courtesy of American Ballet Theatre) was born in Boulder, Colorado. Davison received her initial ballet training at the Boulder Ballet School. She attended the Boston Ballet School, Pacific Northwest Ballet School, School of American Ballet and San Francisco Ballet School summer programs on scholarship. Davison was awarded third place at the Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancers Competition and was a finalist at the Youth American Grand Prix competition in New York City in 2009. Davison was recognized as an international Young Medalist and performed at the International Ballet Festival of Miami. She joined the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre in 2010 and received the Ron and Toby Altman scholarship at that time. Davison joined ABT as an apprentice in November 2012 and became a member of the corps de ballet in June 2013. AMY FOGARTY, from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, began her dance training at age nine, studying and competing in all disciplines of dance. At age 13, she joined a contemporary youth ballet company, La Danse Fatale, under the direction of Julia Levina. She left Minnesota at age 16 and completed her junior and senior years of high school at The Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., under the direction of Oleg Vinogradov and Marat Daukayev. She has also had the pleasure of studying with many different companies, her favorites being American Ballet Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and the New National Theatre Ballet of Tokyo. Upon graduating from Kirov, Amy moved to Denver, performing for Colorado Ballet, under the direction of Gil Boggs. She has also performed with the Dawson Wallace Dance Project, under the direction of James Wallace and Gregory Dawson, where she has been given numerous opportunities to dance lead roles, her favorite being the lead in Gregory Dawson’s Abstract Permutations. This past year she collaborated with Collective Body Dance Lab performing for Brian Carey Chung in New York and Chicago. This is Amy’s second season with Boulder Ballet. RACHEL HABER was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. She trained at the Academy of Colorado Ballet on scholarship under the direction of Inessa Plekhanova. While studying at the academy, Rachel competed in Youth America Grand Prix regionals where she ultimately gained a spot at the finals in New York City. In June of 2003, she graduated from the academy with honors and joined Colorado Ballet as an apprentice, performing in numerous ballets for the company, including Dracula, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Peter Pan, and Rubies. The following year Rachel was invited to the Cerri Ballet Academy in Tokyo, Japan, as a guest artist, performing principal and soloist roles in Raymonda, Paquita, and The Nutcracker. Rachel has also danced professionally with Ballet Austin, Burklyn Ballet Theatre, and Denver Ballet. This is Rachel’s sixth season with Boulder Ballet.

Company Dancers MATTHEW HELMS began his training in Colorado on full scholarship at the Academy of Classical Ballet, where he danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Giselle and Le Corsaire. He then studied on full scholarship with Mark and Sandra Carlson and German Zamuel at the International Ballet School where he performed soloist roles in The Nutcracker and Peter Pan. Matthew competed in the 2008 Youth America Grand Prix and the 2008 Denver Ballet Guild Competition where he received a full scholarship to The Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Matthew has been a guest artist with ballet companies in Utah, California, and Idaho, and for the last three years has performed leading roles in ballets such as The Nutcracker, Paquita, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and Le Corsaire. He choreographed a contemporary ballet that was premiered in the Ballet West Academy Spring show in 2009. Matthew was promoted to the Ballet West Pre-Professional Trainee Program in 2010 and has trained with artists from American Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Joffrey Ballet, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Kirov Ballet and David Taylor Dance Theater. Matthew has studied martial arts since age three, has been acting since age four, and has appeared in movies, commercials and TV shows as an actor or a fight choreographer. This is Matthew’s fourth season with Boulder Ballet. MELISSA HESLEP received her training at the School of Orlando City Ballet for 13 years under the direction of Beatrix Aldana and spent her summers training with teachers including Luba Gulyaeva, Mark Spivak, Valeria Sinyavakaya, and Veronica Aldana. She performed with the student company until 2001, and upon graduation was accepted into the 2002 Youth America Grand Prix finals in New York City. In Orlando, she has performed with Russian Ballet under the direction of Vadim Fedotov and has spent the last five seasons with Central Florida Ballet under the direction of Vasile Petrutiu. She has also had the opportunity to travel as a guest artist for many venues in the United States. Her repertoire includes classics such as The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and The Nutcracker, and contemporary works. This is Melissa’s fourth season with Boulder Ballet. JOSHUA JOHNSON (Guest Artist), a native of New York, began his dance studies at eight years old with Northeast Ballet Company in Schenectady. During his high school years he left home to study with the Virginia School of the Arts, and the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts. Spending his summers attending intensive programs at Boston Ballet, Chautauqua Ballet Company, and Studio Maestro with Francois Perron, Josh quickly advanced to professional engagements with North Carolina Dance Theatre, USA Ballet, and Ako Ballet. His repertoire includes Don Quixote pas de deux, Swan Lake pas de trois, Giselle peasant pas de deux, Sleeping Beauty bluebird pas de deux, La Bayadere golden idol, and George Balanchine’s Who Cares? and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux. After a tour in Japan performing the principal role in Le Corsaire, Josh felt called to expand his horizons beyond the world of dance, and returned to school to acquire a degree in Wilderness Recreation Leadership and Wilderness First Responder, eventually settling in Boulder. Josh is looking forward to making his first appearance with Boulder Ballet. JENNIFER KUHN (Guest Artist) is originally from the North Bay area of San Francisco. She began her formal training with Marin Ballet, studied with Joffrey Ballet in New York, Richmond Ballet, Ballet West, and Alonzo King’s Lines Contemporary Ballet. She attended the University of Utah on scholarship, receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and Master of Fine Arts degree with a teaching/choreography emphasis and teaching assistantship. Ms. Kuhn was a principal dancer for ten years with Dawson/ Boulder Ballet | Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra 2014-2015 Nutcracker

Company Dancers Wallace Dance Project, formerly David Taylor Dance Theatre and served as Rehearsal Director and Répétiteur. Ms. Kuhn has also performed with Montgomery Ballet in Alabama, and continues to perform with Boulder Ballet, 7 Dancers, Zikr Dance Ensemble, and Ballet Ariel. She has performed Sugar Plum Fairy/Grand Pas and Snow Queen in David Taylor’s Nutcracker, Tom Ruud’s Mobile, James Canfield’s Equinox, numerous leading roles in James Wallace’s and David Taylor’s contemporary works, and just as many classical ballet roles. When Ms. Kuhn is not performing, she enjoys choreographing and teaching ballet technique, especially to the next generation of dancers. She gives thanks to the inspiration from positive people and those that partake and share in her journey. DESHAWN MARSHALL began his dance training at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he graduated summa cum laude, with distinction, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. During his time at university, DeShawn was awarded the Richard Denny Young Dancer Scholarship by the Colorado Dance Alliance. Since graduation, he has had the opportunity to train and dance professionally in Denver, San Francisco and New York City. DeShawn has been a scholarship student at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, the American Ballet Theatre, and the Academy of Colorado Ballet. This is DeShawn’s first season with Boulder Ballet. JACOB TAYLOR is a recent graduate of the Ballet Performance Program at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and is currently on faculty at the Boulder Ballet School and Colorado Ballet Academy. He received extensive classical training at IU from Violette Verdy, Michael Vernon, Jaques Cesbron, Shawn Stevens and Guo Ping Wang. At IU his repertoire included ballets by George Balanchine, August Bournonville, Martha Graham, Agnes de Mille, Bronislava Nijinska, Dwight Rhoden, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp and Antony Tudor. Jacob danced in the IU Opera Theater’s production of Jerome Robbin’s West Side Story and was commissioned to choreograph IU Opera Theater’s production of Cendrillon after his choreographic success within the Ballet Department. In addition to ballet performance, Jacob studied dance pedagogy at IU and has taught ballet and jazz to multiple level students. Jacob has been a guest artist with Alabama Dance Academy, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre, Colorado Ballet, Indiana Festival Theater and Indianapolis School of Ballet. He received his formative training at Boulder Ballet School as well as such summer programs as American Ballet Theatre, School of American Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Kaatsbaan, and Perry Mansfield. Jacob could not be happier to be back dancing with the company that nurtured him tremendously as a young artist and still nurtures him to this day. This is Jacob’s first season in the company of Boulder Ballet. KATHRYN WAGNER, a native of Colorado, trained at the Arvada Center with Christina Noel-Adcock, Eve Paris, and Lisi Elsey. Kathryn has performed in numerous productions and outreaches with the Arvada Center Dance Theater, and is now co-artistic director and choreographer for the pre-professional performance group. Additionally, Kathryn is an instructor for the Arvada Center’s Dance Department, teaching aspiring dancers of all ages, and Arts Days program, offering art-centered, curriculum-based workshops to schools and corporate offices. In addition to teaching at the Arvada Center, Kathryn is an instructor for Boulder Ballet School. As a company member with Boulder Ballet, Kathryn’s favorite roles include Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty, Evil Sea Witch in The Little Mermaid, Stepsister in Cinderella, Bride in Crimson Butterfly, and the role affectionately referred to as Doom in On the Move. A graduate of Regis University with an elementary education license, Kathryn is an experienced teacher who may be spotted subbing in classrooms around Boulder! This is Kathryn’s eighth season with Boulder Ballet.

Music Director & Conductors MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, Boulder Philharmonic Music Director Making his mark as a model for today’s conductors, Michael Butterman is recognized for his commitment to creative artistry, innovative programming, and to audience and community engagement. He is in his ninth season as Music Director for both the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is the new Music Director of the Pennsylvania Philharmonic, celebrating its inaugural season in 2014-2015. He is also the Resident Conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and is in his 15th season as Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the first position of its kind in the United States. As a guest conductor, Mr. Butterman made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra in the spring of 2012, and was immediately reengaged for two concerts the following season. Other recent engagements include appearances with the Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, Charleston Symphony, Hartford Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, California Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Spokane Symphony, El Paso Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Peoria Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Pensacola Opera and Asheville Lyric Opera. Summer appearances include Tanglewood, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado and the Wintergreen Music Festival in Virginia. In the 14-15 season, he will make his debut with the Victoria Symphony in Canada and return to the podium of the Santa Fe Symphony. Mr. Butterman gained international attention as a diploma laureate in the Prokofiev International Conducting Competition and as a finalist in the prestigious Besançon International Conducting Competition. As the 1999 recipient of the Seiji Ozawa Fellowship, he studied at Tanglewood with Robert Spano, Jorma Panula, and Maestro Ozawa, and shared the podium with Ozawa to lead the season’s opening concert. In 1997, Mr. Butterman was sponsored by UNESCO to lead the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Moldova in a concert of music by great American masters.
RICHARD OLDBERG, Boulder Philharmonic Guest Conductor The Nutcracker Richard Oldberg was born into a musical family. His grandfather, Arne Oldberg, was a teacher and composer. His aunt Hilda Edwards appeared extensively as a concert pianist. Oldberg attended Harvard, where he conducted the Harvard Opera Guild’s famous production of Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. Upon graduating summa cum laude from Northwestern University, he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he spent over thirty years, working with many great conductors of our time, including Fritz Reiner, Sir George Solti, Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Leonard Bernstein and Daniel Barenboim. Oldberg currently lives in Estes Park and was principal horn player for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra.

Boulder Children’s Chorale
Beginning their sixth season, the Boulder Children’s Chorale serves students in grades one through eight in three ensembles: two Preparatory Choirs for younger singers and Bel Canto for more experienced singers. Since its inaugural season in 2009, Boulder Children’s Chorale has collaborated with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Boulder Ballet, Mahlerfest, Boulder Kids for Bach, the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, Kutandara Marimba, CU Opera and with the adult ensembles of the Boulder Chorale. During the 2014-2015 season, we will continue to offer audiences exciting collaborative and outreach performances. Audition and enrollment information is available at www.boulderchorale.org
KATE KLOTZ, Boulder Children’s Chorale Artistic Director and Preparatory Choirs Director Kate Klotz teaches elementary music in Boulder and specializes in teaching beginning vocal technique and music literacy. She completed her Masters of Music in Music Education at Colorado State University in 2013 and received her undergraduate degree in music education from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2008. Kate holds all three levels of Kodály certification and has also completed one level of Orff Schulwerk training. Ms. Klotz has instructed students in private piano and voice, as well as teaching elementary general music and middle school choir in Colorado and Washington state public schools. HANNAH WUNSCH, Boulder Children’s Chorale Bel Canto Director Hannah Wunsch was the Assistant Conductor of the University of Colorado University Singers and University Choir beginning in 2012, and has been Director of the Mount Calvary Festival Choir since 2010. She is currently Conductor of the University of Colorado Women’s Choir, and she is directing the inaugural season of the University of Colorado Renaissance and Madrigal group. Ms. Wunsch received her Bachelor’s Degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN and her Masters of Music Degree in Choral Conducting with a Vocal Performance Emphasis from the University of Colorado in Boulder. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Colorado with Dr. Greg Gentry.
