Abigail Nims, Mezzo Soprano

Mezzo-soprano Abigail Nims is regarded as a musician of integrity and versatility for her performances of repertoire spanning from Monteverdi, Bach, and Mozart to Crumb, Ligeti and premieres of contemporary works. She has performed as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, São Paulo Symphony, Boston Baroque, Detroit Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Teatro Municipal (Chile), Portland Baroque Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico, the Louisiana Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Indianapolis Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Virginia Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, the Colorado Bach Ensemble, and the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park among others. On the operatic stage, she has performed leading roles with opera companies including Wexford Festival Opera, New York City Opera, Atlanta Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Opera Omaha, Florentine Opera, Virginia Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, and Opera New Jersey. Ms. Nims has collaborated with renowned conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Slatkin, Roberto Abbado, John Butt, Gary Wedow, Martin Pearlman, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Thomas Zehetmair, Jun Märkl, Giuseppe Grazioli, and JoAnn Falletta. Her recordings include Boston Baroque’s Grammy nominated recording of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (Linn Records), Mazzoli and Vavrek’s Proving Up with the International Contemporary Ensemble (Pentatone), Peter Ash’s The Golden Ticket with Atlanta Opera (Albany Records), and Martin Bresnick’s song cycle “Falling” with pianist Wei-Yi Yang on the album Every Thing Must Go (Albany Records). She holds degrees from Yale School of Music, Westminster Choir College, and Ohio Wesleyan University. Ms. Nims resides in Colorado with her husband and two children and is a member of the voice faculty at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Andrew Garland, Baritone

Andrew Garland has performed recitals at Carnegie Hall, the New York Festival of Song, the Ravinia festival, The Cleveland Art Song Festival, Camerata Pacifica, AndreTurp Society Montreal, Voce at Pace, Cincinnati Song Initiative, Tuesday Morning Music Club, The Phillips Collection, Vocal Arts DC, college campuses around North America, and venues in Italy, Croatia, Greece, and Turkey. He has premiered works by Jake Heggie, William Bolcom, Stephen Paulus, Steven Mark Kohn, and had works written for him by Lee Hoiby, Tom Cipullo, Thomas Pasatieri, and Gabriela Frank. He has performed in concert with the

Atlanta Symphony, Boston Baroque, Handel and Haydn, Washington Master Chorale at the Kennedy Center, and National Chorale at Lincoln Center, Colorado Symphony, Colorado Bach Ensemble, and Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, and leading opera roles at Seattle Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Cincinnati Opera, Minnesota Opera, Opera Colorado, and many others. Garland is a mentor with Bel Canto Boot Camp and teaches at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Domenico Luciano, Guest Artist

Domenico Luciano, former principal dancer with Colorado ballet, joins Colorado Ballet Academy after a 20 year career. Mr. Luciano danced with Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf, Germany, Europadance in France, Maggio Danza in Florence, Teatro Dell’ Opera in Rome and Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. In 2004, Mr. Luciano came to the United States and joined Tulsa Ballet as a DemiSoloist. In 2005, he joined Dominic Walsh Dance Theater in Houston as Principal Dancer, where he danced until coming to Colorado Ballet in 2013. Mr. Luciano’s repertoire includes many leading classical principal roles as well as a vast repertoire of contemporary works from masters of the 20th and 21st centuries. Mr. Luciano’s training includes a variety of methods and techniques. His early years were formed with the Vaganova curriculum, establishing strong and clear foundations for classical ballet. Subsequently he trained with teachers from the National Ballet of Cuba, developing a much more athletic and dynamic way of dancing. During the last two years of his training he implemented the French style, refining his technique and quality of movement as he studied with teachers from Paris Opera Ballet. Along with his classical training, Mr. Luciano trained in modern and contemporary techniques including Graham, Horton, Gaga, folkloric Spanish dances, ballroom and character dances. In 1999, he graduated from Royal Teatro di San Carlo Ballet School in Naples. Mr. Luciano has been teaching and choreographing for Colorado Ballet Academy since 2014. Students who have danced his contemporary choreography have been recognized with top placements at Youth America Grand Prix and his choreography for Academy performances has been met with rave reviews from students and audience members alike. Mr. Luciano will work closely in the after school Academy and Pre-Professional Division daytime training program and oversee the continued development of our Men’s Training Program.
