As CEO, I constantly seek new and creative ways to preserve the cultural legacy of symphonic music while actively co-creating its future. Over the past three years, we’ve reached a new height of artistic excellence and are now recognized as one the best orchestras in the United States. We’ve also made changes that reflect our embrace of the new – including new audiences. Take a look at the calendar. From traditional Masterwork and Pops to the new Colorado Symphony Presents series, you’ll see we offer a truly broad range of programming designed to appeal to a diverse audience. Over the past three years, the Colorado Symphony has developed a range of new initiatives to support its mission, including: • Creation of original musical content for corporate partners, including a theme song for Arrow Electronics and a soundtrack for the Colorado Rockies 2014 season. • High-profile creative collaborations with major cultural institutions including the Denver Art Museum and the Biennial of the Americas. • Partnerships with emerging Colorado industries including craft breweries and legal cannabis. • Embrace of digital and social media, increasing online audience engagement by 80% in a twelve-month period. • Targeted audience development initiatives that have increased attendance among younger, previously unaffiliated patrons by 40%. • Broad education programs that support lifelong learning among children and adults. • A community ticketing program that invites underserved families into the concert experience. Our initiatives are working – and gaining notice. This year, the Colorado Symphony was profiled by the world’s leading media outlets (including a feature in The New York Times). Every week, we see new people in the audience at Boettcher Concert Hall. It’s a thrill for all of us, especially our musicians. great city is defined by its arts and culture. The Colorado Symphony Guild believes our wonderful symphony orchestra is vital to the image and reality of a vibrant arts and culture scene in Denver. The Guild’s mission statement is clear that our purpose is “to support the orchestra…; [and] to foster and encourage musical appreciation, knowledge and participation of the membership and the public.” We are proud to have helped make the music happen in this great city for 80 years! The non-profit Colorado Symphony Guild was founded in 1935 by Mrs. Jean Chappell Cranmer, a cultural leader in Denver. Mrs. Cranmer recognized the potential value of organizing volunteers to support the Denver Symphony Orchestra, not only for annual fundraising campaigns, but to nurturer music appreciation and support of the arts by a broad spectrum of the community and to foster the next generation of concert audiences from among the youth in the city. Today the Symphony Guild numbers 300 dedicated members. Our volunteers plan and conduct major fundraising activities, assist at Colorado Symphony Kids concerts, participate in planning and staffing the annual Symphony Ball, and conduct music education seminars. Even The Shop in Boettcher is a Symphony Guild enterprise. When you purchase the marvelous clothing, jewelry or gifts which our buyer carefully selects from around the globe, you are supporting the Symphony. All income from The Shop and Guild fundraisers finds its way to the Colorado Symphony! Each of the Guild’s eight Chapters meets once a month for a business meeting, socializing and musical entertainment, often provided by Colorado Symphony musicians. Guild activities include: • October’s “Fall Fun and Fashions” event at Pinehurst Country Club. • A December Holiday Party at the Governor’s Residence. This year’s special guest was Scott O’Neil, Resident Conductor of the Colorado Symphony. • “Bach’s Lunch” when we serve a luncheon for orchestra musicians. • I n March we will inaugurate a fundraising breakfast at the Embassy Suites hotel for the downtown Denver corporate community. • J une 6 will see party guests in Diamonds and Denim, Boots and Bling at the Guild’s “Sparklin’ Western Affair” at the Denver West Marriott. eonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Samuel Barber: Three names that loom large in the canon of American symphonic music. All three greats feature prominently in the Colorado Symphony’s “American Festival,” Part I and II, which showcases masters who have created, perfected, and expanded the American idiom in symphonic music. So do Stephen Albert and Kevin Puts, two lesser-known modern composers whose works inform the evolving definition of American music. “The American Festival” concerts will occupy the stage of Boettcher Concert Hall three weeks throughout the month of March; Music Director Andrew Litton conducts. Opening the festival February 28, “The American Festival: Part I” features former Colorado Symphony principal clarinetist Bil Jackson, who returns to perform Kevin Puts’ Clarinet Concerto, originally premiered by the Colorado Symphony during the 2008/09 season, conducted by then Music

Director Jeffrey Kahane. Puts, who currently serves as Composer in Residence with the Fort Worth Symphony, won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Music, for Silent Night. The Colorado Symphony will perform his Two Mountain Scenes, which was jointly commissioned by the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and the New York Philharmonic and inspired by the lush mountainscapes of Colorado. Stephen Albert

The program concludes with Bernstein’s iconic The Age of Anxiety, Symphony No. 2, titled after W.H. Auden’s poem of the same name. “The American Festival: Part II” runs March 13-15 with Gershwin’s Cuban Overture: “Rhumba.” The transcendent Anne Akiko Meyers returns to perform Barber’s Violin Concerto, one of the most frequently performed concertos of the 20th century. RiverRun, a Pulitzer Prize-winning symphony by the late Stephen Albert, rounds out the eclectic program. A former Composer in Residence with the Seattle Symphony, Albert’s star was on the ascent when in 1992, he was killed in an automobile accident, at age 51. His influence transcended his short career: In 1995, he posthumously won a Grammy® for “Cello Concerto” as performed by Yo-Yo Ma.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT MEET CHRISTINA CARLSON :

FUNDRAISER, PHILANTHROPIST, COLORADO NATIVE When Christina Carlson joined the Colorado Symphony as Vice President of Development in October, she brought a wealth of experience within the non-profit sector, with an emphasis on human services and education. As a member of an Executive Leadership Team led by CEO and Board co-chair Jerome H. Kern, Christina manages strategic initiatives to develop and sustain new sources of contributed income, deepen partnerships with Colorado’s corporate and business communities, cultivate and nurture donors both new and traditional, and support the Colorado Symphony’s financial health in the short- and long-term. Before joining the CSO, Christina served as the Director of Development at DSST Public Schools and as the Executive Director of the Family & Intercultural Resource Center in Summit County. Christina’s professional background includes teaching, child protection case work, and fundraising. She has served on numerous non-profit boards and is currently the Vice Chair of The Odyssey School of Denver’s board. Christina was named Newsmaker of the Year in 2005 by the Summit Daily for her work surrounding immigrant integration. She holds a B.A. in Art History from Willamette University and an M.S.W. from the University of Denver. Christina spends her free time with her family which includes her husband John and children John and Samson. What most excites you about joining the Colorado Symphony? I’ve been a fan of the Colorado Symphony my whole life, and it’s an honor and a thrill to serve as its Vice President of Development. The Colorado Symphony is a vital cultural asset to Denver and the entire Western region; I’ve been impressed by the organization’s willingness to embrace innovation and change in its programming as well as its business model. I feel privileged to join such an innovative and collaborative organization that is so deeply committed to presenting excellent music that is both timeless and inspiring. Selfishly I am excited to get to attend concerts and other musical events under the guise of “work.” How lucky am I?

Why is it important to support the Colorado Symphony? Philanthropy is a Greek term which when directly translated means for the “love of mankind,” and who benefits more from music than mankind? Music is one of the things that makes us uniquely human and therefore is deeply deserving of all of our support. The Colorado Symphony is a critical thread in the fabric of this city and state. Our ongoing success is dependent on community and philanthropic support. You’re a Denver native. What makes Colorado such a special place to live? I am a Colorado girl though and though. Our incredible natural environment and the city of Denver provide the best of all worlds. The

weather is ideal, because if you don’t like the current condition just wait ten minutes and it likely to change. We see the sun almost every day. No matter what your passion is you can feed it here. We care deeply about our community and our environment. I love to ski, hike, eat out at a great restaurant, attend a sporting event, visit a museum with my kids, or attend a world class concert by the Colorado Symphony. I feel lucky to live in Colorado and am excited that my children Christina and her family hiking in Summit County, CO.

What’s a typical Sunday like for you? I am at a stage in life where Sunday -- well maybe every day -- is a little nutty. I have two young children: John is six and Samson

is two. So you can imagine that life is busy and not entirely glamorous. Sundays often include grocery shopping, laundry, walking the dog, football, cooking, and hopefully a family show at the Colorado Symphony. Every once in a while my husband and I find time to have a conversation that is not about any of the aforementioned topics. Anything you’d like to add? POPS BIOGRAPHIES SCOTT O’NEIL, resident conductor This is Scott O’Neil’s ninth season with the Colorado Symphony, and his fourth full season as resident conductor. O’Neil maintains a strong commitment to making music of the highest quality accessible to young audiences. He served as associate conductor for the Utah Symphony, which he joined in August 2000. O’Neil studied piano performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory, served as the assistant conductor of the Eastman School Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Rice University, where he was the director of the Campanile Orchestra, a community/university orchestra. In the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by the League of American Orchestras to conduct an orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and advanced students from the University of Southern California in Synergy, a program created to promote young, contemporary composers. O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances on each of the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday Series.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT, vocals Affectionately referred to by Elton John as “the greatest songwriter on the planet” and praised by The New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. The New York-born, Montrealraised singer songwriter has released seven studio albums, three DVDs, and three live albums, including the fantastic Grammy® nominated Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall, which captured his celebrated Judy Garland tribute performance at the London Palladium in 2007, and the album Release The Stars which went Gold in Canada and the U.K. Rufus has received Juno Awards for Best Alternative Album in 1999 and 2002 for Rufus Wainwright and Poses, respectively, and nominations for his albums Want Two (2005) and Release the Stars (2008). He was nominated for Songwriter of the Year in 2008 for his Release the Stars album. He also composed the original music for choreographer Stephen Petronio’s work BLOOM which has toured across the country. Musically, Rufus has collaborated with artists including Elton John, David Byrne, Boy George, Joni Mitchell, Pet Shop Boys and producer Mark Ronson among others. His most recent collaboration is on the title track of Robbie Williams’ latest album, Swings Both Ways, which was co-written with renowned musician and producer Guy Chambers and sung as a duet between Rufus and Robbie. Rufus has also distinguished himself by playing original orchestrated pop songs and pieces from an extensive classical repertoire with wellrespected opera singers and orchestras around the world. Wainwright was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony to compose “Five Shakespeare Sonnets,” a five-movement suite that sets the texts from selected Shakespearian “Sonnets” to orchestra and voice. “Five Shakespeare Sonnets” premiered in the US in 2010 and debuted in the UK in 2012 with the sixty-piece BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rory MacDonald. Rufus worked on a theatrical adaption of “Five Shakespeare Sonnets” with the famed director Robert Wilson at the Berliner Ensemble in 2009.

PABLO ZIEGLER, piano For decades, Buenos Aires-born, Latin Grammy® Award-winning pianist, composer and arranger Pablo Ziegler has been one of the most important figures in Argentine New Tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of classic tango, American jazz, and European art music. Dan Bilawsky of All About Jazz aﬃrms, “When [Astor] Piazzolla departed this Earth in 1992, the torch was passed to his longtime pianist who’s been carrying it proudly ever since.” After performing in tango grand-maestro Astor Piazzolla’s legendary quintet for over a decade, and appearing on iconic Piazzolla recordings including Tango: Zero Hour, La Camorra and Central Park Concert, Ziegler has led his own groups for over 20 years, refining and reimagining the bounds of the modern tango tradition. Touring throughout the world with his trio, quartet and quintet, recent seasons have seen Ziegler performing at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, SFJAZZ, the Ottawa International Jazz Fest, Chautauqua, Eastman School of Music, La Jolla SummerFest, Laguna Beach Music Festival, Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston, UCLA, the University of Texas-Austin, the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, the Blue Note in NYC, and many others. HÉCTOR DEL CURTO, bandoneón Praised by The New York Times as a “splendid player,” Argentinean bandoneónist Héctor Del Curto has captivated the audiences around the world as a soloist and chamber musician, sharing the stage with the world–renowned tango legends Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Pugliese, pianist Pablo Ziegler, clarinetist Paquito D´Rivera, ballet dancer Julio Bocca, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington D.C.), Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra and Teatro Colón Ballet among many others. After a Carnegie Hall concert in April 1999 with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and outstanding artists such as Gary Burton, Joe Lovano, Pablo Ziegler, José Angel Trelles and Maria Graña, The New York Times highlighted Del Curto´s artistry, making special mention of his “wistful, piercing solos on the bandoneón.” Del Curto had won the title of “Best Bandoneón Player under 25” when he was only 17 years of age. This award led Osvaldo Pugliese to invite him to play in his legendary orchestra, which made him the youngest bandoneónist in the history of Pugliese’s Orchestra. Héctor Del Curto´s recordings include performances with Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla on Finally Together (Lucho Records), Pablo Ziegler on the albums Asphalt and Quintet for the New Tango (BMG), Tango Magic (Sony Music–USA) on video and DVD and Tango and All That Jazz (Kind of Blue Records), and Luis Borda Cuarteto on Linea de Tango (Jazz and Fusion Records). Also he appears as guest artist in recordings such as Tito Puente’s Masterpiece, Paquito D´Rivera´s Funk Tango, Ricardo Arjona´s Santo Pecado (Sony International), and Shakira´s Laundry Services (BMG).

CLAUDIO RAGAZZI, electric guitar Film composer and guitarist Claudio Ragazzi has been writing awardwinning music for film and television, scoring hundreds of projects and performing with some of today’s most respected musicians at renowned concert halls in the world. Claudio attended Berklee College of Music where he graduated Magna Cum Laude, and won the prestigious Duke Ellington Master’s Award and the Boston Music Award. Claudio went on to compose music for feature films, documentaries and television commercials, as well as undertaking commissioned works for plays and ballets. He scored Brad Anderson’s hit film Next Stop Wonderland produced by Miramax, featuring Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto. The CD reached Billboard’s top ten chart for more than 12 consecutive weeks. Other production credits include scoring the music for the award-winning film, The Blue Diner and a unique collaboration with fellow film composer Mason Daring working on the music for John Sayle’s film Casa de los Babys. Claudio’s work can also be heard in Something’s Gotta Give starring Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves. Recent films and collaborations include working with fellow Argentinean film composer Osvaldo Golijov on Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro and award-winning films at the Sundance Film Festival, The Last Mountain and To Catch a Dollar. A native of Argentina, Claudio grew up in Buenos Aires, where he started playing music at a very early age performing with some of Argentina’s most influential musicians. His signature style has also brought him two Grammy® nods, four Gold albums, 30 charted adult radio hits and recently tied for most #1 CDs on Billboard’s New Age chart.
