HOW TO SHOOT AND APPLY SKILL HOW DO WE ACHIEVE THIS:

• Shooting Development plan • Improve basic shot • Create Drills similar to a game • Difficulty leads to failure which is good • Sequencing/Progressions • Teaching Progressions

3

Shooting Improvement • The best coaches develop the skills that their players need , have a purpose ……….. As a coach we need to know: – – – – – – •

WHERE players are at with their skill development (e.g.: backhand shot) Where players need to get to with their skill development What skill development is required What tactical (why) development is required How to teach/instruct the skills players need(5 teaching progressions) What game/team play consists of

Once an instructor knows the areas players need to work on, he or she needs to include efficient drills focused on repetition and specificity in all practices

Shooting Drills • First go slow • Head up, eyes up - good balance - stick pressure down to create flex - expand the sweet spot • Have player be obstacles • Tons of Reps, no lines, lots of pucks, shoot 100 pucks per practices 5

Correction • DETECTION • CORRECTION • DEVELOPMENT

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but is a habit.” - Aristotle

EIGHT LAWS OF LEARNING 1. Explanation 2. Demonstration 3. Imitation 4. Repetition 5. Repetition 6. Repetition 7. Repetition 8. Repetition 6

Transfer Skill

• Techniques MUST be transferable to the game • Results happen when repetition leads to perfecting a technique. • Only then we can incorporate the technique into drills and ultimately into games

7

Practice SLOW first • Practice at a speed so players can learn • Use Speed progressions: 1) First do it standing still… 2) Then do it moving… 3) Keep adding speed, while keeping your head up

• Work on the same skills in a variety of drills • Players need to learn at a speed where they can practice, think, and create without worrying about making mistakes 8

Game Application

• Once a player has mastered a technique, once they’ve practiced it, once they’ve figured it out with purpose and speed….. — then comes the most important aspect of all!!! • We all know great practice players, but the great ones can do it in a game! • To get players to buy into this approach, you need to show them how it applies IN A GAME 9

Practice With Purpose and Speed

• Once players have practiced a technique, they need to do it in situations that resemble a game (the purpose) • The next step is to increase speed to finally end up a the GAME SPEED

• When players can skate with Purpose (similar to a game) and Speed, they can do it without thinking; it then happens automatically, and deception and creativity can come into play 10
