As the leader in its field, Public Art Fund brings dynamic contemporary art to a broad audience in New York City and beyond by mounting ambitious free exhibitions of international scope and impact that offer the public powerful experiences with art and the urban environment. UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS 2019
Siah Armajani Bridge Over Tree Opening February 20, 2019 Brooklyn Bridge Park, Empire Fulton Ferry Lawn
Mark Manders Tilted Head Opening March 6, 2019 Doris C. Freedman Plaza, Central Park
Carmen Herrera Estructuras Monumentales Opening July 11, 2019 City Hall Park, Lower Manhattan
Pope.L Instigation, Aspiration, Perspiration Opening October/ November 2019
Public Art Fund’s re-staging of Iranian-born, Minneapolisbased sculptor and architect Siah Armajani’s pivotal work Bridge Over Tree (1970) will open this February to coincide with his career-spanning survey at The Met Breuer, Siah Armajani: Follow This Line. Armajani’s seminal bridge rises to a peak to accommodate a lone tree planted beneath it and is the first and only presentation of this sculpture since its original installation nearly 50 years ago. Bridge Over Tree is the sole free, outdoor component featured in the traveling retrospective, which opened at the Walker Art Center in 2018. Debuting this March, Tilted Head is acclaimed Dutch artist Mark Manders’ largest single cast bronze sculpture to date. Conceived specifically for the southeast entrance to Central Park, the monumental androgynous head, seemingly made of drying moldable clay, is incomplete, revealing the cracks of time. Creating an intriguing narrative, the universality of the image is enhanced by the tranquility of the classical face, which is accompanied by remnants of cast objects seemingly left behind as if the sculpture was abandoned in the studio, frozen in time. Estructuras Monumentales marks a significant moment in Carmen Herrera’s long and celebrated career, and brings the full breadth of her work in three dimensions to the public for the first time. A rare break from the two-dimensional plane of the canvas for which the Cuban-born, New York-based Herrera is most known today, the exhibition features five monumental geometric sculptures—three of which have never before been seen— based on historic designs from her ongoing Estructuras series. Addressing Pope.L’s boundary-breaking practice, Pope.L: Instigation, Aspiration, Perspiration is a trio of complementary exhibitions organized by Public Art Fund, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. The expansive exhibitions will address issues ranging from language and gender, to race, social struggle, and community. Conquest, Pope.L’s Public Art Fund commission, will engage members of the public to explore the potential and power of collective action in his largest and most ambitious crawl to date. The location of the project will be announced in 2019. Stay tuned for more information about our upcoming 2019 program.
Letter from the Director & Chief Curator Let me begin with a confession: we went into this year with feelings of some trepidation. Following the excitement and energy of our 40th anniversary year, we wondered if 2018 might feel a bit anticlimactic. In retrospect, we need not have worried. This year’s program delivered one hit after another, bringing commanding commissioned works to some of our best-loved venues, while also engaging new audiences and different locations in exciting and unconventional ways. Yinka Shonibare MBE brilliantly redefined the civic monument for the entrance to Central Park, Anselm Kiefer created his most powerful and significant outdoor sculpture to date for Rockefeller Center, and B. Wurtz thrillingly realized the first public works of his distinguished career for City Hall Park. Mobile, interactive, and immersive exhibitions were also a key aspect of our 2018 program. Erwin Wurm’s corpulent Hot Dog Bus migrated around the piers of Brooklyn Bridge Park, dispensing free hot dogs to the delight of all, especially children. Tauba Auerbach’s dazzling Flow Separation—the first boat that Public Art Fund has ever utilized as an installation site—launched us into New York Harbor, transforming a beloved historic fireboat into a floating three-dimensional painting inspired by the dazzle camouflage of World War I naval ships. Finally, Tony Oursler conjured up an unforgettable immersive experience of projected images and sounds inspired by the history of the Hudson River Valley and the industrial age relics that survive on the shores of Riverside Park South. 2019 promises to be every bit as exciting, as we continue to see artists and audiences ever more focused on our public sphere and on the collective values of creative expression and democratic access that we advance and defend. None of this could happen without a tremendous coalition of supporters from all walks of life. Over the past year the number of individual donors to Public Art Fund increased dramatically at every level. Thank you for your belief in our mission and support for our work. We could not do it without you, and that vote of confidence means the world to us! Cheers,
Nicholas Baume Public Art Fund Board Chair Jill Kraus, President Susan K. Freedman, Artist Yinka Shonibare MBE, and Director & Chief Curator Nicholas Baume

Yinka Shonibare MBE Wind Sculpture (SG) I Doris C. Freedman Plaza Central Park, 60th Street and Fifth Avenue, Manhattan March 7–October 14, 2018 With intricate twists and dynamic folds, Yinka Shonibare MBE’s Wind Sculpture (SG) I rose 23feet above Central Park’s Doris C. Freedman Plaza and is the first in this “second generation” of Wind Sculptures. Reminiscent of the untethered sail of a ship that might have carried people, ideas, and cultures across the ocean, Shonibare’s commission presented us with an alternative monument. The hand-painted pattern on its fiberglass surface was adapted from a fabric pattern that we now regard as traditional African cloth, but is based on Indonesian batik fabric first brought to Africa by Dutch traders in the 1800s. Shonibare thus revealed the construction of “authentic” cultural identity through the effects of colonialism, inviting us to reconsider assumptions about identity.
Support for the commission and exhibition of Wind Sculpture (SG) I is provided by Amanda & Glenn Fuhrman, Amelia & Bayo Ogunlesi, Andrea Krantz & Harvey Sawikin, James & Jane Cohan, the Cynthia L. and William E. Simon, Jr. Foundation, and Ruth & Bil Ehrlich. This exhibition is also supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Special thanks to the Office of the Mayor, Manhattan Borough President, Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC Parks, and Central Park Conservancy. Special assistance has been provided by Craft Engineering Studio. The work has been acquired and is courtesy Collection of Davidson College, NC, and James Cohan Gallery, NY; given generously by Patricia A. Rodgers in memory of her husband B.D. Rodgers, 2018.

Anselm Kiefer Uraeus
Rockefeller Center Fifth Avenue entrance to The Channel Gardens, Manhattan May 2–July 22, 2018 6
Anselm Kiefer’s first public commission in the United States— the towering Uraeus—was unveiled at the entrance to Rockefeller Center’s Channel Gardens on Fifth Avenue this spring. The work featured a gigantic open book with eagle’s wings outstretched on top of a 20-foot-tall column with a large snake coiling up it and outsize lead books around its base. Embracing history, memory, politics, religion, and myth, Uraeus was layered with multiple meanings: the snake, symbolic of both knowledge and danger, also refers to ancient Egyptian deities; the sculpture was clad entirely in lead, the heaviest base metal, known for its alchemical properties; and the book, a frequent motif in the artist’s work, was elevated as if taking flight, resonating in powerful new ways in this context and important moment.
Anselm Kiefer: Uraeus is presented by Gagosian and organized by Public Art Fund and Tishman Speyer.

Erwin Wurm Hot Dog Bus
To the delight of visitors to Brooklyn Bridge Park this summer, Erwin Wurm transformed a familiar Volkswagen Microbus into an overstuffed food truck serving New York City’s most iconic street food—the hot dog—all summer long, free of charge. The act of eating this familiar sausage invited visitors to experience a sculpture not only as spectators, but as active participants, and to contemplate their own daily behaviors as art. While inviting, the paradoxical work also hinted at the connections between consumerism, food, and our bodies, creating a tension between the apparent playfulness of Hot Dog Bus, and its wry observation of our culture’s tendency toward excess. 8
Brooklyn Bridge Park, Piers 1 and 5, Brooklyn June 9–August 26, 2018, Saturdays and Sundays, 12–6 pm
Lead support for Hot Dog Bus is provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Wendy Fisher, and Oliver’s Realty Group/RAL Development Services. Major support is provided by Jill & Peter Kraus, Lehmann Maupin, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, AllianceBernstein L.P., Matthew & Erin Bass, Mickey Cartin, and Anna Marie & Robert Shapiro. Support is also provided by Alan H. & Judith R. Fishman, Stephanie & Tim Ingrassia, and Linda R. & Andrew Safran. Special thanks to Hellmann’s and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York. This exhibition is also supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Tauba Auerbach Flow Separation
New York Harbor Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 6, Brooklyn, July 1–September 23, 2018 Hudson River Park, Pier 66A, Manhattan, September 24, 2018– May 12, 2019 Tauba Auerbach’s Flow Separation—the artist’s first major public art commission and the first Public Art Fund work to be conceived for a boat—transformed the historic Fireboat John J. Harvey into a contemporary “dazzle ship” and invited the public for free visits and rides around New York Harbor this summer and fall. Flow Separation is Auerbach’s take on dazzle camouflage—a technique used during World War I to confuse enemy submarines rather than disguise vessels altogether. Alluding to John J. Harvey’s history as a functioning fireboat, the design was inspired by fluid dynamics and illustrated the movement and behavior of water. Auerbach and a team of some 20 scene painters applied the dynamic red and white design to the fireboat entirely by hand. The floating sculpture is on view from land 24/7 through May 2019 and artfully combines notions of innovation, technology, and abstraction, inviting us to remember the devastation of WWI, 100 years after the Armistice. Flow Separation is co-commissioned by Public Art Fund and 14-18 NOW: WWI Centenary Art Commissions, part of the Dazzle Ship series co-commissioned with Liverpool Biennial and supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Bloomberg Philanthropies is the presenting sponsor for Tauba Auerbach: Flow Separation. The Leadership Committee for Flow Separation is gratefully acknowledged, including Jill & Peter Kraus, Fotene Demoulas & Tom Cote, Elizabeth Fearon Pepperman & Richard C. Pepperman II, Amy & David Abrams, Sarah Arison & Thomas Wilhelm, Maurice Marciano, Jennifer & Jason New, and Paula Cooper Gallery. Support is also provided by Red Crane Foundation, Patricia & Howard Silverstein, Blue Rider Group at Morgan Stanley, Anna Marie & Robert Shapiro, Shari & Jeff Aronson, Tracey & Robert Pruzan, and west elm. This exhibition is also supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Special thanks to the Office of the Mayor, Office of the Manhattan Borough President, Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, Department of Cultural Affairs, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Hudson River Park, and Infinite Scenic.

B. Wurtz Kitchen Trees City Hall Park Bordered by Broadway, Chambers Street, and Park Row, Manhattan August 7–December 7, 2018 B. Wurtz’ Kitchen Trees—the artist’s first public art exhibition in his nearly 50-year career—featured five sculptures that appeared to grow like an oasis around the park’s historic fountain, echoing its circular forms and the spray of its jets with a splash of whimsy. The arboreal sculptures were composed of everyday kitchen items, with brightly colored stacked colanders forming bulbous trunks; at the ends of their spindly branches, pots and pans swayed in the breeze with a weightlessness balanced by overflowing plastic fruits and vegetables. Echoing the forms of the fountain, these Kitchen Trees transformed the civic space with bursts of color, repurposing quotidian objects in unexpected ways, in order to draw attention to their formal beauty and value.
Major support for Kitchen Trees is provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Jill & Peter Kraus. In-kind support is provided by Melissa & Doug. Kitchen Trees is courtesy of the artist; Metro Pictures, New York; Kate MacGarry, London; Maisterravalbuena Madrid/Lisboa; and Richard Telles Fine Art, Los Angeles. This exhibition is also supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Special thanks to the Office of the Mayor, Office of the Manhattan Borough President, and NYC Parks.

Tony Oursler Tear of the Cloud
Riverside Park South between 68th and 70th Streets along the Hudson River (Pier I), Manhattan October 10–October 31, 2018 Tuesdays–Sundays, 7–10 pm Since the 1980s, Tony Oursler has been one the most experimental artists of his generation, consistently redefining installation art and the moving image. Tear of the Cloud was his newest and most extensive site-specific multimedia artwork, with five digital projections superimposed onto the landmarked 69th Street Transfer Bridge Gantry, the surrounding landscape, and the flowing water of the Hudson River itself. These spectral images combined with an evocative soundscape to create a dramatic experience that transformed Riverside Park each night. Inspired by the history of the Hudson River region, Oursler’s kaleidoscopic intervention wove together a roving cast of characters, offering layered connections and multiple meanings that illuminated our complicated past, encouraged us to reflect upon the present, and inspired us to reconsider the future of our environment and culture. 14

Public Art Fund in the News
“I was aboard yesterday afternoon and cannot recommend [Flow Separation] highly enough… Auerbach’s paint job—employing intricate streaks of white and bright red—is impressive to behold up close, but the real surprise for me was just how much people enjoyed it from the shore, waving and snapping photos. All that warm attention had the effect of instilling a sense of camaraderie aboard ship. Strangers talked to each other as the boat zoomed along the East River and the North River, past Ellis Island, and on to the Statue of Liberty, where it stopped and put on quite a show, blasting water through its cannons…The whole experience is magnificent.” —Andrew Russeth, ARTnews
“What is most compelling about [Hot Dog Bus], though, is how well it connects to all types of people: art world insiders or someone who might not know anything about contemporary art engage with this work in a similar way. And though not everyone considers themselves an artist or a performer, this project just might make you rethink what defines an artist, and if you might be a performance artist yourself.” —Drew Clayton, Whitewall
“The voluminous fiberglass resin cast sculpture, evoking a sail swirling with wind, joins the lineage of aesthetically engaging and thought-provoking public works that the Public Art Fund has placed across the city, appearing at a crucial time when the world, especially the United States, is struggling to define the ‘other.’” —Osman Can Yerebakan, BOMB Magazine
