Dear Student, Congratulations on your acceptance to San Diego Christian College! This booklet is your guide to completing the process for enrollment at San Diego Christian College. Inside you will find information regarding financial aid, payment options, class registration, and student life. If you have any questions or need to speak with someone in one of our offices, there is a list of contact names and phone numbers included as well. Please use the checklist located at the end of the booklet to ensure that you have completed all of the necessary steps for enrollment. Preparing for Financial Check-in for New Fall Students: Current – July 1, 2012 Apply For Financial Aid • All students requesting Financial Aid to assist in financing their education at SDCC are required to file the FAFSA or a FAFSA Waiver. If you wish to apply for any need-based grants or loans, you MUST file the FAFSA (need-based grants include the Cal Grant, Pell, SEOG, and SDCC’s Heritage and Christian Worker Dependent grants). • If you meet the financial qualifications and wish to waive need-based aid and all Stafford loans, you must submit SDCC’s FAFSA Waiver instead of filing the FAFSA. To see if you meet the qualifications, please view the FAFSA Waiver, found under “Forms” on our website. • To complete the FAFSA: Go online to www.fafsa.gov. After you have filed you can use this site to check the status or make corrections to your FAFSA. SDCC’s Federal School Code is 012031. Make sure not to file through www.fafsa. com (they charge a fee). • For SDCC Grants and Scholarships: The Admissions Office will notify the Enrollment Services Office of your preliminary eligibilities after you are accepted.

Receive Notifications from the Enrollment Services Office • Students who are fully accepted to the college, and who have turned in the required financial aid forms requested by the Enrollment Services Office, will receive an award packet in the mail. • The Enrollment Services Office will send a request via email after the initial notification included in your award packet. Any forms required will be attached to the notification. Forms may also be accessed online by clicking “Financial Forms” at www.sdcc.edu/financialaid.

Apply for Loans, if Needed: Steps to Apply for a Stafford (Student) Loan 1. Complete the FAFSA. 2. Accept the loans through your Empower Web account. 3. Complete and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN)—or loan application—and Loan Entrance Counseling online at www.studentloans.gov.

Steps to Apply for a PLUS (Parent) Loan 1. Complete the FAFSA 2. Complete a PLUS Loan Request and Master Promissory Note (MPN) at www.studentloans.gov.

Steps to Apply for PRIVATE STUDENT LOANS (Alternative/Non-Government) 1. Before applying for a Private Loan: a. Be sure to utilize all grants, scholarships and Federal loans available to the student. b. Check to see if you have the resources to set up a Payment Plan through the Enrollment Services Office. 2. Once it is determined that a Private Loan is still needed: a. Find the amount you need for the entire year. This may be obtained by contacting the Enrollment Services Office at (619) 201-8730 and/or at Financial Check-in. Be sure the amount you apply for is for the entire school year. b. Apply for a Private Student Loan with a lender of your choice. To view a general list of lenders go to www.sdcc.edu/loans. (Click ‘Information about Education loans,’ then click ‘Alternative Loan Information,’ and choose ‘Alternative Loan Lender Information and links to Apply’).

Finalize Paperwork Prior to the Start of Classes: July 1 – 1st Day of Classes • The Enrollment Services Office will be sending email reminders for documents or steps that need to be completed in order to finalize loans and/or your financial aid file. The email address listed on your FAFSA is the one we use for communication. • If you still have items that are needed two weeks after the start of classes, your aid will not be disbursed to your Student Account and you will have a balance due. If documents are not turned in by the 10th week of classes, you risk your financial aid being revoked. • Once you complete your financial aid file your financial aid is complete for both Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 unless your housing or enrollment status changes. You must notify Enrollment Services of either of these events. Your Spring aid will be disbursed two weeks after the start of classes.

LOAN FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Federal Stafford (Student) FAQs What is a Stafford loan? • Subsidized Stafford Loans provide students with financial need as determined by federal regulations. This subsidized loan will not accrue interest while the student is enrolled in school at least half-time. • Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, disbursed to students, are not need-based. These loans accrue interest during all periods.

Can I be denied for a Stafford loan? No, you cannot be denied for a Stafford loan. The only requirements are that you complete the FAFSA, are not in default on any Federal loan or grant, and have not yet reached aggregate limits for loans.

Is this loan in my name? Yes, Stafford loans are for STUDENTS only. The loan and the promise to pay are under the sole responsibility of the student.

What is the difference between Subsidized and Unsubsidized? They are both government loans under the Stafford program with the same grace period and repayment terms. The difference is the following:

Do I have to pay Stafford loans back right away? No, as long as you are enrolled at an eligible institution for at least six units you are in deferment. Repayment begins six months after you drop below six units, drop out of school, or graduate.

Federal PLUS Loan (Parent) FAQs What is a PLUS loan? PLUS Loans are offered to parents of dependent (as determined by the FAFSA) college students to help meet college costs.

Who is eligible to take out a PLUS loan? • Parents and Step-parents of DEPENDENT (as determined by the FAFSA) undergraduate students. • The student must be attending at least half time and making satisfactory academic progress. • Parent must be a U.S. citizen or eligible resident. • A credit report will be obtained from a National Credit Bureau. • If parent is denied for a PLUS loan, the student may be eligible for an additional unsubsidized loan (see question #4 listed below).

How much am I allowed to take out for the year? What is the interest rate? You can take out up to the student’s cost of attendance minus any other student aid received. The interest rate is 7.9% FIXED.

When do I go into repayment? How long can I take to repay my PLUS loan? Usually you start paying 60-90 days after the spring disbursement. Payment deferment may be offered while the student is in school. You can take up to 25 years to repay the PLUS loan. See www.direct.ed.gov.

I do not have good credit history. What happens if I am denied for the PLUS loan? PLUS loan denials make the student eligible for an additional Stafford Unsubsidized loan. They would be eligible for the independent unsubsidized amount according to their grade level. The Enrollment Services Office would need verification of the denial.

Do I have to complete a FAFSA for the PLUS loan? Yes. The FAFSA must be completed to be eligible for the PLUS loan.

Alternative Loan FAQ’s What is an alternative loan? An alternative loan is a private loan from a lender that supplements the student’s financial aid package. It helps cover the balance that federal grants and loans, outside scholarships, and other resources have not covered. However, we highly encourage students to apply for as many outside scholarships as they can.

Who can apply for an alternative loan?

• Credit worthy students and co-signers (if applicable). • Students must be enrolled at least half-time.

What are the interest rates? How are they determined? Interest rates are based off of the student’s and (if applicable) co-signer’s credit history and credit score. Lenders have intricate formulas to determine what interest rate a specific student may receive. They can vary from 5% to 15% depending on the lender and type of loan. Interest rates for Alternative Loans are variable.

Is a co-signer release an option? Many lenders have co-signer release options. The stipulation is that the student must make consecutive payments ontime in order to qualify. Contact your lender to see if this is an option. _____________________________________________________________________________

Other Loan FAQ’s Why do I have to choose a lender for alternative loans? Why can’t the school choose for me? Due to federal regulations, Financial Aid Administrators are not allowed to choose lenders for students or parents on any type of loan. We can only make suggestions and supply tools to help you find a lender to suit your personal needs. To see a general list of lenders and to find other helpful resources visit our website at www.sdcc.edu/loans. (Click ‘Information about Education Loans,’ then click ‘Alternative Loan Information,’ and choose ‘Alternative Loan Lender Information and links to Apply’).

Do I have to apply for my loans online? Is this safe and secure? The fastest and most efficient way to apply for any loan is online. Almost ALL alternative loan lenders have an electronic loan process. All alternative lenders are required by regulation to have a secure and encrypted loan application process. San Diego Christian College participates with almost all alternative lenders in the electronic loan process. Also, online applications are processed at a faster rate. Applying for Stafford and PLUS loans online is also the fastest, most efficient, and safest method.

Along with the anticipation of beginning your college experience come many questions and concerns regarding the financing of your education. To make this process as smooth as possible, here are a few key steps to remember as you explore the financial requirements of the SDCC Enrollment Services Office:

Financial Check-in Financial Check-in must be completed online prior to the start of the academic year. Students will be sent instructions along with a link to the Financial Check-in page after they have been registered for classes. At the time of check-in, each student will determine how he/she will cover the balance due (if any) after his/her Financial Aid has been applied. Students are required to electronically sign financial disclosures and agreements and select a plan for payment at this time.

Payment Options The balance due must be paid in full by July 1, 2012 unless one of the following payment plans is selected at the time of Financial Check-in:

Monthly Payment Plan Make monthly payments to the college by signing a payment plan. Payment plans are offered on a yearly basis and are scheduled over a 9 month period. Payments are due on the first of the month, July 2012 through March 2013.

PLUS/Alternative Loan Utilize loans to cover the remaining balance not covered by Financial Aid. If you are planning to use any type of loan, the college requires that loans are completed and certified prior to the beginning of the academic year.

In Addition • If changes in Financial Aid, Registration, Fees or Housing Information occur after you have completed Financial Check-in, your balance due may be effected. • In the event payment or check-in deadlines are not met, applicable late fees and restrictions will be applied. • Students are required to have medical insurance. A medical insurance ID card must be provided by the Financial Check-in deadline unless you plan to purchase the college insurance. Failure to provide a medical insurance ID card will result in automatic enrollment and billing of college insurance. • The Enrollment Services Office issues bookstore vouchers only when a certified credit balance is reflected on the student’s billing estimate. Enrollment Services will issue a voucher only if Financial Aid is complete and creates a credit on your account. • If the student has a parent or other party who financially contributes to his/her expenses, it is important for the student to communicate his/her financial needs to the person(s) providing assistance and/or grant the third party access as an agent to their online account. A student or agent may view the student’s account online any time via Empower Web (This requires a student or agent username and password).

Transfer Students

• What classes will transfer to SDCC? Courses from accredited colleges/universities that can be applied to your program, as well as a specified number of courses from unaccredited colleges. A total of up to 90 units are transferrable to SDCC. Courses which have received a grade of C-, D, F, W, etc., are not transferrable to SDCC. Credit/No Credit courses are subject to individual evaluation.

• What is a TCE? A Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE) is an evaluation that will show all transfer courses accepted by SDCC. You will have access to your official evaluation through Empower Web once completed by the Enrollment Services Office.

• How is my grade level determined? Your grade level (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior) is determined by the courses that transfer to your program. Freshman 0 – 29 credit hours Sophomore 30 – 59 credit hours Junior 60 – 89 credit hours Senior 90 credit hours and over Note: This is the status used in determining loan eligibility, VA eligibility, etc.

Advising

• How do I register for classes? New students will be assigned their first semester classes by the Enrollment Services Office after completing the Priority Registration form online. Experienced staff will review college classes, AP tests, and majors for each student and create a class schedule accordingly. If the student has a scheduling conflict or desires to take a different class, there will be opportunity to add or drop classes during New Student Orientation or SDCConnect. After the first semester students will meet twice a year with an academic advisor from their department to make their own class schedule.

• How can my academic advisor help me? Your academic advisor will assist you in planning your academic load for each semester and work toward graduation. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment with your advisor if you are in need of assistance. Your advisor is also available to help you in other areas, such as study skills, time management, motivation, or other matters relating to success in college. Your advisor can be a valuable resource as you learn and grow at SDCC.

• Important Note: While your advisor is available to help you with your academic plan, it is important to remember that you are ultimately responsible for your academic progress. Please make sure to read the catalog carefully to familiarize yourself with academic policies and requirements. Also keep track of your own progress using the Master Schedule and degree audit for your major. Do not hesitate to ask questions. The Enrollment Services Office staff is available to answer questions and help you stay on track.

Add/Drop Courses

• What is the difference between add/drop and clean-up? There are two different periods in which you are able to alter your class schedule. The Clean-Up period is from your day of registration until the sixth day of the semester. During this time classes may be added or dropped without fees. The Add/Drop period is from the end of the CleanUp period to the Drop Deadline. At this point, classes may only be withdrawn from, displaying a “W” as the grade. If a student stops attending a course without officially dropping, it is considered an unofficial withdrawal and a grade of “UW” will be given. There is a $10 fee for any changes made during the Add/Drop period.

• How do I change my schedule? Meet with your academic advisor to discuss class changes. Any changes made during the Clean-Up period can be submitted by your Academic Advisor through Empower Web. Any changes made after the Clean-Up period will need to be submitted on an Add/Drop Form to the Enrollment Services Office. Any fees incurred will be applied to your student account.

Mission Statement Student Life facilitates whole person growth in this academic community so that students can make a difference in the world for Christ. The four main areas of our mission statement are: Christ, character, community and culture. The foundation of our mission is Jesus Christ. As a student’s relationship with Christ grows, his/her character is affected. This character growth, in turn, strengthens his/her godly influence on our campus community. Finally, we seek to empower students to influence their culture. Through our Spiritual Life and Residence Life programs, we seek to facilitate their growth so that they can make a difference in the world for Christ.

Chapel and Spiritual Life Chapel is at the core of our community and works to strengthen our faith and campus identity. We meet together for chapel three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Chapel provides opportunities for the entire SDCC family to worship, pray, share, and learn through the involvement of our talented faculty, staff and students, guest speakers, artists and more. Other pillars of our Spiritual Life program include the Dr. David Jeremiah Bible Conference, International Outreach Festival, Day of Prayer, Student Ministry program and small group Bible studies throughout the entire campus. If you have any questions, please stop by the Student Life office, or email our office manager, Robyann Oakes, at robyann.oakes@sdcc.edu.

Commuters Opportunities for campus involvement are open to commuters as well as resident students. We encourage commuters to get involved with any of the activities, groups and clubs on campus including senate, intramural sports, Bible studies, special events, trips, and connecting with mentors who are either faculty, staff or administration.

Residence Halls There are five residence halls on campus: East, Center, West, South and North. Incoming freshmen will be assigned underclassman housing. Each room is outfitted with the following per student: a bed and mattress, a desk, dresser, study chair, window blinds, closet, campus network capabilities, carpet, air conditioning and heat. There are two community bathrooms per floor.

Recommendations for Check In 2012 • Student Life recommends that you obtain renter’s insurance of any unexpected damage or loss. • Every new student is required by law to have a tuberculosis (TB) test. You may choose to have this administered by your personal physician before arriving on campus; in which case the test must have been administered within the past year. You may not begin classes until we have received proof of a TB test. • Students who wish to have a car on campus must obtain a parking permit. To obtain your parking permit, please bring the following with you to New Student Orientation in August: - Valid Driver’s License - Current Registration - Proof of Insurance

Computer Set-Up In order to use your personal computer with SDCC internet service, computers must run on either Mac or Microsoft Windows, have an anti-virus scanner installed, and be free of viruses. All Windows supported OS must have the latest updates and patches. Windows 98 is not supported. Admissions Final Checklist  Complete/Update FAFSA

This can be done online at www.fafsa.ed.gov using the code 012031. Once this is complete you will receive notice from Enrollment Services concerning your Financial Aid Award packet.

 Tuition Deposit:

$100.00 non-refundable All students must submit a $100 Tuition Deposit before registering for classes. This deposit goes toward your bill (this is not an extra fee). The deposit can be made through our website at www.sdcc.edu/payments.

 Housing Deposit:

$250.00 non-refundable - Resident Students Only Allows a student’s housing form to be processed and holds a room for him/her on campus. The deposit can be made through our website at www.sdcc.edu/payments.

 RSVP for Class Registration

All students must RSVP for class registration. When you submit this form, you will have priority in receiving your class schedule. You may RSVP at www.sdcc.edu/registration.

 Confirmation of Residence Form

This form must be completed by all students even if you are not planning to live on campus. It will assist SDCC in assigning roommates and residence halls. This form can be submitted online at www.sdcc.edu/forms.

 Health Form

Required immunizations must be received before a student arrives on campus. If immunizations were already administered, a doctor must sign and date when received. This form can be submitted online at www.sdcc.edu/forms.

 Final High School Transcript

Official (unopened and stamped) transcript with graduation date must be submitted.

 Complete Financial Check-in with Enrollment Services Instructions will be emailed to you by our Enrollment Services Office.

Other Important Information: •

If you are a Fall athlete, please check with your coach for pre-season/early move-in dates.
