Foreword

FOREWORD his year marks Cartier’s sixth year of sponsoring The Queen’s Cup, one of the most famous polo tournaments in the world. The core values of this great game – believed to be the oldest team sport in the world – are perfectly aligned with Cartier’s own principles of dedication, passion and commitment. The teams’ success in this tournament depends on their ability to harness these factors into a blend of unity between player and pony at great speeds!

T

Cartier has always recognised the skills needed from both player and pony by presenting individual prizes to the Best Playing Pony and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) on finals day. Last year’s MVP Julian de Lusarreta is featured in this programme. He highlights the dedication and devotion that players need to bring to each and every high-goal game to ensure success. I believe that these values are also reflected in our recently opened exhibition at The Design Museum in London. Called Cartier in Motion, this exhibition reflects more than 100 years of bespoke timekeeping and reveals that Cartier’s drive for excellence has influenced design far beyond the timepiece. Excellence will, without doubt, be much in evidence on Cartier Queen’s Cup Finals Day on Sunday 18 June. In the past 57 years, since HM The Queen first presented the trophy to Guards Polo Club, some of the biggest names in the sport of polo have battled to win this most prestigious of trophies. Sunday’s final will be no different. This year’s entry of 10 teams has ensured three weeks of thrilling matches, for both players and spectators, and the final stages of our tournament will be no different.

Whoever lifts the Cartier Queen’s Cup on Sunday will be a worthy winner and I salute them, and all the teams who are playing this year. May the best team win. Laurent Feniou Managing Director Cartier UK

President’s Draw

PRESIDENT’S DR AW Pictures by Images Of Polo he Clubhouse at Guards Polo Club was packed in early May with patrons, players and many friends of the Club attending the annual President’s Draw. This event is the perfect way for the Club to celebrate its three biggest tournaments of the season, the high-goal Cartier Queen’s Cup, the 15-goal Bentley Motors Royal Windsor Cup and the 8-goal Hildon Natural Mineral Water Archie David Cup. The highlight of the evening though is always the draw for the prestigious, 22-goal Cartier Queen’s Cup, with some of the biggest names in the game eager to know who their opposition will be. Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, after welcoming everyone in both English and Spanish, drew the 10 teams into leagues for the initial stages of the Cartier Queen’s Cup tournament, which concludes on Sunday 18 June. Four seeded teams were drawn first – La Indiana, RH Polo, King Power Foxes and Talandracas, followed by the remaining six teams. The resulting draw saw the teams divided into two leagues: League One: La Indiana, Talandracas, Sommelier, El Remanso, Monterosso. League Two: RH Polo, King Power Foxes, La Bamba De Areco, Sifani, Murus Sanctus.

CARTIER’S GOLDEN BOY PREPARES TO SHINE AGAIN Julian de Lusarreta made his Cartier Queen’s Cup debut last year, playing for finalists La Indiana. They might not have won the Cup, but this six-goal player impressed all, taking the Cartier Most Valuable Player prize in one of the Cup’s most competitive finals. Gareth A Davies, Polo Correspondent for The Daily Telegraph, catches up with him as he prepares for his second Queen’s Cup tournament with a new team and a new handicap

ulian de Lusarreta was a revelation in his debut season in England in 2016 for Michael Bickford’s La Indiana team and there is little doubt that the quartet – Bickford, Agustin Merlos and Nic Roldan – were bolstered hugely by the young Argentine’s presence. He made it felt over and over again. And although La Indiana failed to secure any of the major silverware, they reached the finals of both the Cartier Queen’s Cup and the Gold Cup, won The Trippetts Challenge and matched the two super-powers – King Power Foxes and Dubai/Valiente, to the final hurdle. Within all of that, to the bitter end in those two major matches, Lusarreta shone like a beacon with his endeavour, and brilliant horsemanship.

J

He made a lasting impression. So much so, that long-time sages in the sport, such as John Horswell, the renowned coach, saw Lusarreta in his eyes as “the player of the season”. That is saying something, given the opposition he was up against. One only hoped that Lusarreta would come again, and indeed he has, this time signed by Hilali Noordeen’s Sifani team. “I think it is going to be a really good tournament this year. Although looking at 10 teams that entered that is almost guaranteed,” Lusarreta explained, before reflecting on his first year in Blighty in 2016. “Last year couldn’t have been better. La Indiana was a really good team who played very well together. We had very good tournaments –and the final of the Queen’s 34

CARTIER 2017.indd 34

Cup was against one of the best teams of all time, Dubai/Valiente. For me it couldn’t have been better. It was an amazing tournament.” It took some adapting to the different conditions, though, revealed the 25-yearold known as ‘Negro’. “It was a little bit difficult for me at the beginning because I didn’t know how to play here. The ground is different, the weather is different. But it’s nice to play here in England because people love to watch the game. So not only did we have a good season last year, but everybody was really happy with us as a team and enjoyed the way we played as team.” It was not until the spring of 2017 that Lusarreta knew he would be returning. “We only made this team with Hilali Noordeen in March”, explained Lusarreta. “At the beginning of the year I didn’t think I would be coming because I didn’t have a job. Then, Hilali told me to play and organise the team – he wanted to make something with me.” Lusarreta’s rise from six to seven goals – not surprisingly – lifted him out of the running with La Indiana. “That was the main reason I left the team. When they put me up to seven goals La Indiana decided to keep playing with Nic [Roldan] and the team. So I had to start looking for another team. I had a couple options at the end of the season, but they didn’t happen. So when Hilali finally called me, we organised this team. And I am really pleased with our team and our set-up.” Cartier Queen’s Cup 2017

One of the major changes, of course, over the winter was Adolfo Cambiaso’s move from Dubai to Ben Soleimani’s RH Team. “That was very interesting and I think it will be fascinating. Adolfito is always going to be very motivated to play with a new set-up, for sure. It will be good to see him playing against King Power and the other good teams, but it will be tough.” Lusarreta continues to be impressed by the Cartier Queen’s Cup in his opening salvos in 2017. “It’s the highest tournament, with the Gold Cup, here in Europe, and so for me playing at this level against such strong teams is really good for my career. Another plus point for this season is that Lusarreta is based at Guards Polo Club’s own stable complex at Flemish Farm. “I like it very much here. The rain is something I don’t care about, either, I can handle it,” he added. He has been impressed by the fields. “Grounds one and two at Guards Polo Club [the Queen’s and Duke’s Grounds] are really good fields. Clearly the desire to impress again burns deep. “My ambition is always to win, but I think this season we will have to play as well as we can and just try to enjoy the games and give ourselves as good a chance as possible to win. My immediate goal was to be involved in a good team, have fun, and play as best as I possibly can.” And the future? “Well, if it’s possible, I’d like to play here for 20 years more, just like Adolfito has done.” Complete a couple of decades of polo here in the UK and Julian de Lusarreta will join the annals of great Argentines who have plied their trade and horsemanship in England at the highest level. And, given his already impressive start in the UK, who would doubt that he may just do it? 37

artier’s history is a history of design classics. Take for example the Santos watch that went on sale in 1911 – a move many historians credit with popularising the wristwatch for the first time – or the invention of the iconic Tank that followed in 1917, inspired by the new machines of World War I. It’s a little-known fact that Louis Cartier also produced drawings for an aircraft, as well as commissioning designs for a car and a powerboat.

C

These landmark moments form the starting point for Cartier in Motion, an exhibition at London’s new Design Museum curated by Lord Norman Foster. It explores the history of Cartier as a design house first and foremost. Amidst upheavals in art, architecture, travel and lifestyles, the traces of a new world could be seen, and this is illustrated through each of the main themes of the exhibition which include: • The evolution of Paris and its influence on Cartier shapes • Louis Cartier’s connections with Alberto Santos-Dumont and other pioneers of the age • The birth of the modern wristwatch • The everyday accessories

Cartier Queen’s Cup 2017

designed to cater to a glamorous inter-war lifestyle • The evolution of Cartier watch designs and Cartier craftsmanship As Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, says: “There are many parallels between our watches and architectural and product design. It is wonderful to share our history of innovation in London.” To time with Cartier in Motion, the maison has released a limitededition platinum version of its amorphous Crash, said to have been inspired by a watch destroyed in an accident. Only 10 will be made, each featuring Cartier’s witty skeletonised Roman numeral dial, and costing £67,000 each. When to visit Cartier in Motion is on now until Sunday 23 July at London’s Design Museum, 224 – 238 Kensington High Street, London W8 6AG; tel: 0203 862 5900. This summer Land Rover launches the latest member of its impressive stable – the Range Rover Velar. Combining style and power in a sleek silhouette, the Velar can deliver for every occasion. Charles Armstrong-Wilson attends a preview

f you are a polo superstar your transport is pretty straightforward, although invariably impressive. The ponies roll into the pony lines at Smith’s Lawn in some of the most advanced HGV equine transport available. So how can players and Cartier’s most VIP of guests match that at the Cartier Queen’s Cup Final?

I

Well Land Rover might just have the answer – the sleek Thoroughbred that is the fourth member of the Cartier Queen’s Cup 2017

CARTIER 2017.indd 47

Range Rover stable – the Velar. This mid-size, luxurious SUV, which sits comfortably between the chic Evoque and the more powerful Sport, offers impressive levels of refinement, elegance and technology. The Velar designers’ maxim is clearly “less is more”. Stripping away the unnecessary, the Range Rover team has created a car redolent of sleek lines and elegant simplicity. The surprisingly spacious interior – thanks to a generous wheelbase – offers a 47

sanctuary of calm. This is also the ultimate in discreet – with controls staying hidden until lit – enhancing the relaxing ambience even further. With the addition of flush, deployable door handles it could be said that the Velar is almost sculpted in looks. In fact, the Velar is probably the most poised of all Land Rovers, but don’t be fooled by its calm and assured appearance as it can deliver plenty of power too. Velar drivers have the opportunity to choose from six power options. This range of top spec engines includes the 180PS, 2-litre Ingenium diesel with CO2 emissions from only 142g/ km as well as the more potent 380PS, supercharged 3-litre V6 petrol engine. Whatever the spec though, Land Rover guarantees to deliver the perfect performance, with air suspension as standard on six-cylinder models. Adaptive Dynamics damping technology is standard on all the Velar models to guarantee unrivalled comfort and control. Add Land Rover’s pioneering traction technologies into the mix, including Terrain Response 2 (optional), All Terrain Progress Control (optional), Low Traction Launch, Hill Descent Control and Gradient Release Control, and Velar owners 48

have everything to hand to provide the smoothest of rides, regardless of surface or gradient. It is apparent that Land Rover has not forgotten its original raison d’etre either – the “go anywhere vehicle”. For owners of equines – although maybe not a high-goal patron with a string of 100+ ponies – a good towing facility is invariably top of wish list. The Velar will not disappoint, delivering an impressive towing capacity of up to 2,500kg, complemented by Land Rover’s optional Advanced Tow Assist function. With

“...the Velar is probably the most poised of all Land Rovers, but don’t be fooled by its calm and assured appearance as it can deliver plenty of power too” this the driver reverses the vehicle with the trailer attached using the Touch Pro Duo rotary controller, negating the need to counter-steer. So, another stress-free feature – perfect when nerves are already jangled with the thought of a first chukka or a tricky cross-country round. Cartier Queen’s Cup 2017

Something else that will soothe is that the Velar can be kitted out in premium textile seat material as an alternative to leather. The Dapple Grey material was developed together with Kvadrat, Europe’s leading manufacturer of high-quality design textiles, and is complemented with Suedecloth inserts in Ebony or Light Oyster. Perfect if your Velar is to spend more time in muddy show fields than on Tarmac.

Velar on show at Cartier Queen’s Cup The Range Rover Velar goes on sale from Summer 2017 and is priced from £44,830 (OTR). Of course, such a beauty already has an invite to the Cartier Queen’s Cup so head over to the Land Rover Lawn and be introduced to the latest member of the Range Rover stable. In the meantime, find out more by visiting www.landrover.co.uk

“The Velar has clearly come a long way from those original, 1970s Range Rovers, but the core principles remain the same.” However, if you are more interested in turning heads as you pull into the members’ car park at Guards Polo Club, the Velar First Edition might match your style. Only available for a year, it offers a wealth of extra features as standard, including full extended leather interior trim to complement the perforated Windsor leather seats in Nimbus or Ebony. Add to that a 1,600W Meridian Signature Sound System, Matrix-Laser LED headlights and 22-inch split-spoke wheels with diamond-turned finish and heads will surely turn. 52

Outdoor Space

GIVE YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE COOL LUXE The most English of environments, after the polo field of course, is the garden, but it’s all too easy to tread the traditional path when choosing furniture and accessories. This year, why not opt for luxury with a touch of high-tech, suggests Seán O’Connell

LINLEY for Summit

hisper it quietly, but the British are coming – into the garden, that is. Yes, outdoors is where we are now spending more of our free time – and money. Thanks partly to the relatively mild weather so far this year, sales of garden furniture and accessories are booming like never before – and we certainly aren’t talking cheap folding chairs and plastic tables. Those patios, pools and dining areas have now become extensions of our home and, consequently, we’re suddenly all upping the ante on the entertaining front.

W

Daring to be different Because we are now creating permanent all-year-round outdoor spaces, it is becoming increasingly important

that our exterior furnishings share the values and aesthetics of those we enjoy indoors. London-based designer Jonathan Levien says: “Traditionally, outdoor furniture has generally been a little heavy and lacking in elegance, but I can see the sophistication and refinement of indoor design coming outside.”

Island Kitchen by Indian Ocean

And the resulting freedom for designers has seen a revolution in colour, fabrics and textures. It isn’t just styles that are becoming more sophisticated, iconic interiors brands are moving outdoors and taking their big-name

designers with them. LINLEY, the eponymous British design house, has collaborated with Summit to create an exquisite line of furniture that marries the best of British design with American manufacturing knowhow. B&B Italia commissioned Antonio Citterio to style its best-selling Charles sofas, while Kettal employed Patricia Urquiola to create their radical industrial-look Mesh range of metal seating and tables. Jonathan Levien himself produced Kettal’s Cala, an elegant armchair that takes its lead from the iconic high-backed seat made famous by a certain cinematic character called Emmanuelle. Such risqué associations may be rare, but the inspiration behind modern outdoor products is becoming more and more daring. And consumer demands and expectations are at an all-time high. According to Tina Mahony, director of Go Modern luxury garden products: “People are spending far more on their gardens than ever before, and they want design-led, contemporary furniture that reflects their taste, yet that can be left outdoors all year round.” Material gains The new generation of outdoor furniture is highly sophisticated, both in its design and in the technology used to make it. Manufacturers are finding amazingly creative ways to 60

work with teak, stone, powder-coated metals, braided and woven plastics and especially showerproof and fadeproof upholstery fabrics, all of which can make garden sofas and chairs just as comfortable as their indoor counterparts. “Outdoor luxury comes in many guises, and people are constantly looking for original ways to spend quality time in the garden with family and friends,” says Simon Ray, Cartier Queen’s Cup 2017

managing director of Encompass. “Manufacturers are using exciting new materials and daring designs, to create a certain ‘wow’ factor to whet our creative appetites.” As if to prove his point, Maffam from Latvia has embraced basalt fibre, once a top-secret material in the Soviet aerospace industry. It has used this versatile material to create its unique and other-worldly hanging garden seat pods. 61

Gaze Burvill

Built for endurance Top-notch garden furniture has to cope with the vagaries of the British climate and one company, Oxley’s, has its own special weapon on this front – aluminium. “The best outdoor furniture must be maintenance free, whatever seasonal weather it endures,” says managing director Simon Hudson. “Our furniture is powder coated with architecturalgrade polyester, then cured in our own high-temperature ovens.” Even that most traditional of materials, wood, has been given a modern makeover. The best of today’s oak furniture combines computercontrolled cutting with precision steam bending, merely enhancing this material’s amazing natural qualities. As Simon Burvill of Gaze Burvill says: “The properties we value in oak include its natural resistance to the harsh outdoor environments, including the ability to offer strong resistance to both fire and rot. Plus the finishes you can achieve with it are not only beautiful on the eye, but a pleasure to touch.”

cooking corner is all that’s required and there is no shortage of cooking appliances with the “wow” factor. Take, for example, the amazing Big Green Egg, which offers seven different cooking modes, or the sleek Ofyr, with its ingenious wide, flat rim that enables you to cook on a single surface at different temperatures. But any outdoor kitchen worth its salt has to look as good as the food it produces and bespoke is increasingly the way to go, with cutting-edge Cartier Queen’s Cup 2017

designs utilising materials such as concrete and stone. A perfect example of this is DesignSpace London’s Modulnova outdoor kitchen. Its main block combines a woodburning oven with storage and fronts that conceal both a fridge and an ice-maker. The floating worktop, set at a right angle, has an integral BBQ pit and a deep stone sink. This connects to the final element, a table constructed from solid-teak slats and set with piasentina stone block stools. Outdoor entertaining has finally come home. 63

CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP TEAMS 2017

en top teams, featuring some of the biggest names in the game, entered the 2017 Cartier Queen’s Cup in a bid to win the most prestigious of polo trophies. This tournament traditionally begins with a public draw - held in the Clubhouse here at Guards Polo Club. It is here that teams first learn who their opponents will be in the league stages of the competition. Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, drew the four seeded teams first – King Power Foxes, Talandracas, La Indiana and RH Polo. The latter may be a fairly new team into this heady mix, but earned their seeding as they are fielding the World’s Number One Player - Adolfo Cambiaso for the first time. The remaining six teams’ names were then called to complete the 2017 Cartier Queen’s Cup Draw. Divided into two leagues, these 10 teams have been battling over the past three weeks in a bid to reach this Sunday’s final. There have been dramas, team changes, edge-of-the-seat thrills, rain, sun and some fabulous pony power – all adding up to another thrilling high-goal contest.

DOLFO You may hear comments such as, “he plays just like Adolfo,” and “if only we had Adolfo in our team.” The Adolfo in question is the talented Adolfo Cambiaso. A 10-goaler since the age of 17, two decades on he is still at the top of his game. Always easy to spot with his Argentine flag helmet – this year playing for RH Polo.

XTRA TIME If the match is tied at the end of the six chukkas (periods of play), then extra time is called. After a short break for players to change ponies, swig some Hildon water and get their breath back, they ride out for a golden goal scenario. The first one to score wins the game – so no pressure then!

E

ACUNDO A popular South American boy’s name which on a polo field invariably translates to super talented. 10-goaler Facundo Pieres is a member of the one of the sport’s most famous families and this year is once again playing alongside older brother Gonzalito, also 10 goals, in the King Power Foxes team. It runs in the blood though, as his dad Gonzalo and uncle Alphonso were also big hitting 10-goalers too.

ALLET Players’ sticks or “mallets” appear quite solid before a game, but in the hands of these talented high-goalers they can bend and sway like a dancer, seeming as light as air. IDE OFF When two riders come together – often at speed – and attempt to push each other off the line of the ball. Always spectacular to watch but probably not always great to experience. The ponies are supposed to do the pushing, but in the heat of a match players use their bodies too – although elbows are definitely not allowed.

R

AFETY When you hear the commentator refer to a safety 60, it means a defending player has hit the ball over his own backline, giving the attacking team a free shot. This is taken 60 yards out from the backline, opposite the point where it went out of play and is the equivalent of a corner in football.

S

EN-GOALER If you are a 10 you are probably South American. Unlike golf, the higher the handicap the better the player in polo and 10 is as high as you can go. There is only ever a handful at any one time – a very rare club indeed and the Cartier Queen’s Cup is the perfect opportunity to watch them in action. There are five this year so remember their hat colours and watch the world’s best at play.

ponies and great games played in the spectacular setting of Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park. ELLOW FLAG Umpires have the power to wave a yellow flag. Two flags in a game means the player is sent off the field for two minutes, but three will see the player sent off immediately. Very rare, but an always effective deterent.

Y

ERO The lowest handicap allowed in the high-goal. This is to ensure the safety of all the players. So patrons who want to join the big league may need to polish up their game. High-goal is not for the faint-hearted as you will see thoughout this tournament.

HOTEL TINDASTÓLL in Saudarkrokur in northern Iceland is the oldest hotel in Iceland and was opened at the present location in 1884. Hotel Tindastóll is also one of Iceland’s oldest timber houses and one of the last premises of its type to be completely renovated. The ski area in Tindastóll is open from December to the end of April and we have very good slopes for both beginners and for those more advanced.

HONOURS’ BOARD QUEEN’S CUP RESULTS

M The Queen first presented this coveted silver trophy to Guards Polo Club in 1960. In the following decades, some of the sport’s biggest stars have battled to ensure their names are added to this trophy for polo posterity. The player whose name appears the most is a current 10-goal professional who is hoping to add to his tally further in 2017 – Adolfo Cambiaso. He might be with a new team, but Cambiaso’s experience at this level of the game ensures that RH Polo are on most people’s shortlists. Another name that stands out is HRH The Prince of Wales, who won this tournament in 1986 with Daniel Wildenstein’s Les Diables Bleus. This was a step further than his father, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who finished runner up with his Windsor Park team in 1964 and Archie David’s Friar Park in 1966. There is another name that features several times – Pieres. The Argentine professional Gonzalo Pieres Snr won four times with Kerry Packer’s Ellerston team in the 1980s and ‘90s. Now it is the turn of his sons – Gonzalito and Facundo – to replicate his success with King Power Foxes, a feat the brothers achieved in 2015.

SpineGym in numbers

Four minutes

Timo Heino recommends a four-minute workout in the morning, which will straighten your posture more effectively than an hour at the gym

SpineGym lets you perform efficient exercise routines in your living room, strengthening your back and improving your core muscles Did you know that 95% of all lower back pain can be prevented with the correct exercise for the abdominal and back muscles? While that may seem like a simple solution to a common problem, in reality it’s not that easy. Routines such as yoga or planking require a lot of floor space and time: two things we often have little of to spare. It was this problem that led Fredrik Serlachius and Timo Heino to develop SpineGym, a vertical workout tool that improves posture and strengthens your core muscles. Internationally patented, SpineGym trains your muscles from a standing position – the most efficient way to improve them, according to physiotherapists. “People do a lot of planking or similar kinds of floor exercises, but if you train your core-muscles to react in those positions, then once you are standing up and lift something, you might hurt your back as the core-muscles don’t react quickly enough,” explains head developer Timo

CARTIER 2017.indd 88

Heino. “If you train them standing up, the reaction time of the core muscles is much quicker.” SpineGym comes highly recommended by physiotherapists, and not just because of its effectiveness. “Physiotherapists were finding that many people in the past were too lazy to follow their rehabilitation programmes,” says Timo. “But with SpineGym this is not the case, as it’s so easy to set it up and get going.” Many people use SpineGym during their break at work, or while they watch TV at home. Research at workplaces shows that over 70% of the work absences caused by back problems can be avoided with regular use of SpineGym. “SpineGym is used by everyone and is fully customisable; The Finnish National Ballet company and Finnish Olympic team use it for warms ups, office workers use it to correct their back problems, seniors use it,” Timo says. “Anyone who thinks a strong back is important will always benefit.”
