LAURENT FENIOU HM The Queen and Laurent Feniou at the Cartier Queen’s Cup Final in 2018

t is wonderful that this year’s edition of the Cartier Queen’s Cup can fully reflect the passion, drive and determination of this outstanding, high-goal polo tournament. After two challenging years we are delighted to welcome our guests from around the world to the Cartier Enclosure to be part of this historic day of first-class sport. With the country celebrating HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year, our own polo anniversary (2012 – 2022) could not have fallen in a more auspicious year. Cartier has an unrivalled history with the British Royal Family as a Royal Warrant holder, dating back generations and proudly known as the “jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers”. Cartier is deeply honoured of its storied association with HM The Queen through the sponsorship of this tournament. Heritage and legacy are as synonymous with Cartier as they are with polo. These traits will be reflected on the field of play today with a new generation of polo talent following in their ancestors’ sporting footsteps in this most competitive of cups. So thank you all for your continued support of this most prestigious of polo days and may the best team win.

“We are indebted to Her Majesty who has been an inspirational figure to us all for seven remarkable decades”

The Cartier Women’s Initiative empowers women entrepreneurs, supporting a global programme for women-run and women-owned businesses. The annual initiative seeks to support female trailblazers by supporting their business and equipping them with leadership skills to thrive. CARTIER WOMEN’S

F ounded in 2006, the Cartier Women’s Initiative is a longstanding commitment for the Maison – a programme which continues to evolve to support women globally. The Cartier Women’s Initiative is an annual, international entrepreneurship programme that aims to push for change by empowering women impact entrepreneurs. The ethos behind the programme is best explained by Cyrille Vigneron, President and CEO of Cartier: “The best thing you can do in business is empower women. It changes everything.”

For more than 70 years, polystyrene has dominated global cold supply chains, primarily to insulate shipments of pharmaceuticals and temperature-sensitive foods. Yet this useful plastic product devastates the environment. The packaging industry generates about 42% of the more than eight million metric tons of plastic waste entering oceans every year.

CARTIER WOMEN’S INITIATIVE

Joanne Howarth, Founder, Planet Protector Packaging

This innovative programme is aimed at women-run and women-owned businesses from any country and sector that aim to have a strong and sustainable social and/or environmental impact. The Initiative focuses on providing the necessary financial, social and human capital support for women to grow their business and build their leadership skills.

The scheme was initially launched as part of the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society in 2006. Almost two decades later, the Cartier Women’s Initiative has recognised and supported 262 women across the globe who are tackling an extraordinary range of challenges. Today the Cartier Women’s Initiative community spans 62 countries and includes sectors as diverse as pharmaceuticals, e-learning, and agriculture. These women entrepreneurs have embraced a bold mindset to grow their businesses; many successfully pivoted during the recent pandemic and have emerged stronger than ever. Cartier is proud of the women impact entrepreneurs whose actions are rippling around the world. We are confident that with their vision, passion, and drive, and a worldwide network of allies, what lies ahead is nothing less than a global wave of positive change.

Nature has inspired the company’s flagship product, Woolpack, which leverages the thermal properties of wool that keep sheep

So Joanne founded Planet Protector Packaging. The company provides an ecologically sound polystyrene substitute by diverting inferior non-textile grade wool from landfill and giving it a second life as a sustainable insulation material. “When people transition away from polystyrene, they need a replacement that delivers on food safety, thermal performance, and temperature stability,” Joanne says.

Joanne Howarth encountered polystyrene’s pervasive challenges in 2015 when she became the outsourcing partner to what is now Australia’s largest meal kit provider. “I was surrounded by a sea of polystyrene,” she says. “I used to watch in horror as forklift drivers unloaded entire trucks full of this insidious material. I saw the urgent need to find a sustainable alternative.”

In collaboration with Australia’s Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Center, Planet Protector is investigating the viability of fibre blends and the potential to incorporate agricultural waste fibres like cotton, corn, and sugarcane into a product for the wine industry, where temperature fluctuations in transit can diminish quality. Since the company started trading in 2016, Planet Protector has diverted more than 4,000 tons of waste wool from landfill, eliminated more than eight million polystyrene boxes from supply chains, and generated $7.5 million in new revenues to sheep farmers. mission to eliminate ocean-destroying polystyrene has escalated. “In the last two years, we’ve doubled our year-onyear business,” Joanne says. “As humans collectively retreated indoors during the pandemic, we have had a taste of a world in harmony with nature that enables economic growth, prosperity, and equity without the need to mindlessly extract earth’s natural resources.”

The sparsely populated Tibetan Plateau is home to nomadic herders who raise yaks, sheep, and goats in a high-altitude environment. Although urbanisation and tourism are increasing in this region, economic opportunities remain elusive. Many young Tibetans want to connect their traditional herding communities with the modern world but have few ways to do so. In 2006, Carol Chyau and a team of Harvard graduate students travelled to Western China seeking inspiration for starting a social enterprise and an organisation in Yunnan making cheese from yak’s milk piqued their curiosity. They discovered that 80% of the world’s yak population resides in Western China. Carol says: “We discovered the United Nations’ handbook on yaks and one sentence really stood out: ‘The fibre of yak down is extremely soft,’ but 15 years ago, we saw no products made from yak fibre.”

–– CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP 2022 ––16 “I’m hungryso Icould eat like horse!”a HORSE SPEAK

OLD WAR HORSE For centuries wars and battles depended on horses for their success and so a common phrase, old war horse, derives from that era. “MY KINGDOM FOR A HORSE!” Our enduring affection for horses has naturally evolved into something of a status symbol: a bit like a motorbike or a sports car today. The phrase my kingdom for a horse is used typically to stress how important a usually insignificant item is at a given moment. It was coined by Shakespeare in Richard lll in reference both to a king who stood to be dispossessed of his kingdom from losing his horse and to the fact that something small and insignificant outweighed a kingdom at that moment.

Horses have been involved in our lives for centuries and so it is not surprising that equine phrases have crept into our everyday language. Adam Jacot de Boinod looks at the origins of some of our most popular expressions H orseplay, horse sense and eat like a horse . . . our language is awash with idioms for this wonderful creature. Animals have naturally long been a source for us to make comparisons and references as they perform so many roles in our lives. Perhaps none more so than the horse which has been involved in everything from historic warfare to man’s “cavalier” status and medieval jousting, from agriculture to transport and coaches, not to mention the world of horse racing. So, it is not surprising how imaginatively the horse has been used linguistically. What is so fascinating – and always eyebrowraising – are the derivations and definitions of these phrases and idioms.

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE! Social prowess brought us to be on one’s high horse as well as to get off your high horse. Both refer to arrogance in a person as those in command invariably chose the biggest

Starting with Homeric Greek we first find the Trojan horse in The Iliad. The Trojans dragged an abandoned wooden horse through their city gates which was secretly full of Greek soldiers. They stole out of hiding place at night to slay the guards, open the gates and set fire to the city of Troy. Today the phrase has become commonplace in the English language.

HOBSON’S CHOICE

CART BEFORE THE HORSE

FALL AT THE FINAL HURDLE Horse racing, which has been a popular sport in Britain since the 18th century, has generated a plethora of terms including ‘dead heat’, ‘fall at the final hurdle’ and to ‘flog a dead horse’. The ‘dead horse’ analogy today of course, means that if something has been decided, no amount of discussion can change it.

horses as a display of their power. Riding high above the crowds, they could appear to act as if they were better than those below.

GOING FULL TILT Notions of chivalry developed in medieval times with lances and jousting bringing us at full tilt. Tilting was an early name for jousting, where two knights charge at each other on horseback in an attempt to topple their opponent off his horse.

The emphasis on horses as agricultural beasts is apparent in phrases like to work like a horse. Horses were key when it came to –– CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP 2022 ––18 HORSE SPEAK

Interestingly, the phrase don’t change horses in mid-stream dates back to 1861, when Abraham Lincoln offered himself as a presidential candidate by saying: “An old Dutch farmer once said that it was not best to swap horses when crossing streams.”

WORK LIKE A HORSE

Stables were commonplace by this time and is responsible for the expression Hobson’s choice, meaning a choice that isn’t a choice at all. This phrase refers to a Mr. Hobson, an innkeeper in Cambridge, who had a stable of 40 horses and whoever came for a horse was obliged to take the one nearest the stable door or go without, ensuring that every customer was served in equal fashion.

HELL FOR LEATHER! Expertise at riding has also given us hell for leather, meaning flat out or as fast as possible. The phrase refers to the wear and tear a horseman makes to his or her saddle

DON’T CHANGE HORSES!

With the introduction of coaches and horses came the phrase cart before horse, highlighting that the horse must always go in front of the cart as it would be impracticable the other way around.

general transportation too, initially by riding; hence the phrase to ride roughshod over someone. This harks back to the days when it was normal to ride rough-shod horses in which the nail-heads of the horseshoes were left sticking out so that they could be ridden across any surface without slipping – over ice or other obstacles.

It is thought ‘to come a cropper’ derives from the hindquarters of a horse: the croup or crupper. When falling from a horse in the 18th century, you were said to have fallen “neck and crop”, meaning headlong or head over heels.

TO COME A CROPPER

HORSE SPEAK

–– CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP 2022 –– 19

A horse’s character gives us horseplay. Coined in the 1580s, horse actually meant anything strong, big or coarse; so, horseplay meant strong play. This is also the basis of the word horseradish!

A horse’s need for food is expressed by to eat like a horse, while the phrase to bite the hand that feeds one originates from the idea that horses may bite when fed by hand. Meanwhile, full of beans dates back to 14th century Europe when horses were fed with beans and then become quite lively. As for you can lead a horse to water bit you can’t make it drink, it illustrates that people, like horses, will do as they will!

EATING LIKE A HORSE

Horses for courses across many centuries indeed!

HORSEPLAY

Adam Jacot de Boinod was a researcher for the first BBC series QI and is an author of three books including The Meaning of Tingo’ TO CURRY FAVOUR

...derives from the word curry, meaning to rub down or comb a horse - how many of us have used a curry comb without thinking of the provenance of the word - while favour comes from the French favre, meaning tawny-coloured or wild. The sense being that the horse was susceptible to flattery which figuratively is a form of stroking.

NEVER LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH

HORSE SPEAK

LONG IN THE TOOTH

Last but not least are the physical properties of a horse, wonderfully exemplified with the age-old maxim never look a gift horse in the mouth, meaning accept a gift as it is given instead of trying to get something better. If someone was given a horse and tried to check its teeth and thereby its age, it meant that instead of being grateful for the present one was rudely trying to assess its value.

–– CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP 2022 ––20 and straight from the horse’s mouth moving into everyday language. This last phrase refers to picking up tips from those who have been in closest touch with the recent form of the horse.

Another dental phrase that is now in common parlance is long in the tooth, meaning someone old or aged. It is likely to derive from horses whose age can be revealed by their teeth, which can wear down over time. So, the longer the tooth, the older the horse.

Fifteen top teams have battled for the past three weeks in a bid to reach today’s final. Just to make things harder this year there have been some visa issues due to the Home Office dealing with the unprecedented Ukraine refugee situation and so some seven-goal players and above have been doubling up across teams in the early league stages.

This year we are celebrating HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – honouring an incredible 70 years on the throne. Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in British history, beating her own great-grandmother, Queen Victoria’s record by some six years already.

Guards Polo Club is celebrating its 67th season this year. The Club was founded by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1955 as this Royal Duke wanted to play closer to home, Windsor Castle. Today Guards Polo Club is one of the most famous polo clubs in the world and home to the coveted Cartier Queen’s Cup.

The number of minutes in a chukka – the period of play. High-goal polo like the Cartier Queen’s Cup is made up of six chukkas. If scores are level at the end of the sixth then teams head into sudden-death, extra time. In one game last year the scores were still level after seven chukkas and so the umpires widened the goals for an eighth chukka!

Polo has three umpires – two mounted on the field, distinctive in their black and white striped shirts – and a “third man” who watches the game from the grandstand. At this level of polo only professional umpires oversee the game and they are all ex-players who know every trick in the book. If the field umpires cannot agree on a foul, they turn to the third man and their decision is final.

CUP GLORYOF

Like every piece of solid silver this cup is hallmarked and it is these tiny markings near the top lip of the cup which hold the key to its creation. First in the line of four tiny symbols are the capitalised letters HEB on top of three further letters FEB inside a shield. This is the maker’s mark and are the initials of the Barker Brothers – Herbert Edward Barker and Frank Ernest Barker, silversmiths in England between 1908 - 1926. Next is the standard mark, a lion facing left, looking over its shoulder, indicating the material from which it is crafted is solid sterling silver. The most curious of the marks is one that initially appears to symbolise three mushrooms inside a triangle. This assay mark (given by the office of the Guild of Silversmiths in the area who were appointed to survey the silver standard) is in fact three wheatsheaves

THE HISTORY OF THE QUEEN’S CUP

Thanks to some detective work by Guards Polo Club’s Archivist Graham Dennis we were able to piece together the past and uncover the background to the cup.

he Cartier Queen’s Cup is one of the most prestigious polo trophies in the world but is probably one of the smallest. Standing at just 12.5cm tall and 16cm in diameter, this silver cup gains height thanks to a five-tiered, silver banded base. Despite its size it exudes understated elegance, simplicity and an air of anticipation which draws the eye to the crested cup and the tiers and titles on which it  Encirclingsits.

The Cartier Queen’s Cup embodies the history of polo over six decades, ensuring players are at their very best in a bid to add their name to this iconic piece of sporting history

Many of the winners’ names engraved on the base of the cup have not only become permanently intertwined with the tournament’s history but also with the constant re-evaluation of the sport of polo itself. Perhaps not so frequently questioned however are the origins of this cup. Thanks to some detective work by Guards Polo Club’s Archivist Graham Dennis we were able to piece together the past and uncover the background to the cup, which has become so highly prized amongst professionals and patrons alike the world over.

the base of the cup (not unlike the hands which hold it aloft each June over the Queen’s Ground)  are six leaves pointing upwards.  Engraved on one side are the words Her Majesty The Queen’s Cup and on the reverse side is the Royal Coat of Arms with its shield  representing Great Britain, supported on the left by the English Lion and on the right by the Scottish Unicorn. Beneath, is the motto of the British Royal Family –Dieu et Mon Droit (God and my right).  Decorating the top of the handles are acanthus leaves – a symbol of the noble Greco-Roman culture which is believed in some Mediterranean countries to represent enduring life and immortality.

Chester (which had been producing plate since the 15th century and was granted its own Assay Office by an Act of Parliament in the 17th century, ceased silver trading in 1961.  So it is highly likely that the Queen’s Cup, which was first presented at Smith’s Lawn and engraved with its first winners’ names in June 1960, was among the last items to be sold or gifted before the doors of one of the oldest Guilds of Silversmith’s in England closed forever.  So it just leaves one to wonder whose name will be added to Her Majesty’s own cup in this, the 70th year of her reign.

The history of British polo post-war is displayed very clearly on the Queen’s Cup. Some of the sport’s most famous names are listed on this most iconic of trophies, highlighting sporting drama across more than six decades. The trophy was a personal gift from HM The Queen to the Club in 1960, emphasising the close ties between our Royal Family and Guards Polo Club.

There are also strong bonds among many of this year’s competitors, with cousin playing cousin and nephew playing uncle in some matches. In fact family legacy is a hallmark of this tournament. Some of the sport’s biggest names, Heguy, Merlos, Cambiaso, Pieres, Castagnola, Albwardy, Tomlinson, Hine, Monteverde and Harper are not only featured on this year’s team list but can also be found engraved on the trophy too. This year we are also celebrating Cartier’s 10th anniversary of sponsoring this tournament. Cartier brings an elegance and panache to finals day that is befitting such a glamorous trophy.
