Our conference is hosted at the Austin Convention Center, located at 500 E. Cesar Chavez St., Austin, TX 78701. Additional sessions are located on the 6th Floor of the Hilton Austin, located at 500 E. 4th Street, Austin, TX 78701. Not only is Austin the capital of the Lone Star State, it’s also home to some of the world’s best live music, food, and nightlife. And this year’s conference is in the heart of it all. It’s a city full of creators and innovators, musicians and software engineers, migas and chicken fried steak, legislators and college kids, Lone Star beers and Tito’s vodka, and vegan restaurants and Texas barbecue. Social entrepreneur Nancy Lublin harnesses people, technology, and data to change the world, and was named by Fortune as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.”

Gregory McGinity is executive director for The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, which seeks to advance the public good in education, science, and the arts. McGinity has been with the foundation since 2003 and currently leads the foundation’s education grantmaking.

Nina Rees is the president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, the leading national non-profit organization committed to advancing the charter school movement.

During her 2013 TED Talk, Lublin launched Crisis Text Line, the world’s first 24/7, free, text message-based support service for people facing a range of issues, from depression and substance abuse to eating disorders and physical abuse. With over 64 million text messages processed, Lublin expanded Crisis Text Line nationally, allowing people to text in and get help. Using this data, Lublin launched a separate initiative called Crisis Trends to track when and where issues occur. In 2015, McGraw-Hill Education appointed Lublin to its Board of Directors. One of the Schwab Foundation’s 2014 Social Entrepreneurs of the Year, she was selected as a Young Global Leader by The World Economic Forum and named one of the NonProfit Times’ 50 Most Powerful Leaders three years in a row. She is the author of the bestseller Zilch: The Power of Zero in Business and has been featured on Oprah, 60 Minutes, CNN, and in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and The Economist.

Prior to joining the foundation, McGinity was the senior education policy consultant to the California State Board of Education, where he worked on the creation of California’s academic content standards and assessment system. McGinity also previously worked on the staffs of two members of the United States Congress and served as a legislative liaison at the United States Department of Education. He was a senior fellow at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and took a leave from The Broad Foundation in 2005 to serve as chief of staff to the California secretary of education. In July 2017, McGinity was appointed to the Los Angeles County Board of Education.

Rees has over 20 years of experience in Washington, D.C., most recently as senior vice president for strategic initiatives for Knowledge Universe (KU). Prior to her tenure at KU, she served as the first Deputy Under Secretary for Innovation and Improvement at the U.S. Department of Education and served as Deputy Assistant for Domestic Policy to the Vice President at the White House. Rees has appeared on various news outlets including Bloomberg, CNBC, C-SPAN, and PBS’s NewsHour. Her articles and opinions have been published in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. She also writes a regular column for U.S. News & World Report. Rees serves on the board of directors of the PIE Network, the advisory committee of the Program on Education Policy and Governance at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and the advisory boards of Honored and the National Association of Charter School Authorizers.

As chief executive officer of the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr. leads the organization’s efforts to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement in STEM education across the country. He has been involved in math and science education for more than 25 years through the Harris Institute & Foundation and as a founding board member for NMSI.

An award-winning producer, entertainment executive, entrepreneur, and community activist, Moctesuma Esparza is well known for his contributions to the movie industry and commitment to creating opportunities for Latinos everywhere. A partner in the highly successful Esparza-Katz Productions with Robert Katz, he worked with stars such as Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez, Andy Garcia, Jimmy Smits, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, and Halle Berry.

A veteran astronaut, Harris has logged more than 438 hours and traveled over 7.2 million miles in space. He was the first AfricanAmerican to complete a space walk. While at NASA, he conducted research in musculoskeletal physiology and clinical investigations of space adaptation and developed in-flight medical devices to extend astronaut stays in space. Prior to NMSI, Harris was CEO and managing partner of Vesalius Ventures, Inc., a venture capital firm. Earlier in his career, he completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic, a National Research Council Fellowship in endocrinology at the NASA Ames Research Center, and trained as a flight surgeon at the Aerospace School of Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base.

Esparza’s latest film Walkout for HBO, tells the true story of the Chicano student uprising in East Los Angeles in 1968, where dramatic walkouts were staged at high schools to protest academic prejudice and dire school conditions. Other films produced by Esparza include: Price of Glory (2000), Selena (1997), and many others. Esparza founded the Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise Charter School, is co-founder of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, co-founder of the Smithsonian Latino Center, and founding Member of the Cesar Chavez Foundation. He has served on the Corporate Board of Directors of the Motion Picture Television Fund, the Board of Directors of the Museum of Latin American Art, and as a Trustee of the California State University System. Additionally, Esparza served as a commissioner to the Los Angeles City Retirement System.

Marc Sternberg leads the foundation’s initiatives to improve K-12 education for all of our nation’s children by empowering parents with quality options. Before joining the foundation, Sternberg served as the senior deputy chancellor at the New York City Department of Education, where he directed the citywide portfolio planning efforts including new school development and placement, school improvement and accountability planning, and the Pre-K-12 enrollment team. Sternberg also served as senior advisor to the chancellor and the mayor’s office on education policy and strategy. Prior to his service as deputy chancellor, Sternberg was founder and principal of the Bronx Lab School, an unscreened high school on the Evander Childs High School campus. He also served as a Teach for America corps member in the South Bronx, and was selected as a 2009-2010 White House Fellow.

Esparza has received numerous awards and honors including an Academy Award nomination, a Golden Globe nomination, an Emmy award, a Clio award, an Alma award, a Cine Golden Eagle award, a Lifetime Achievement award by the Imagen Foundation, and was named one of the “Most Powerful and Influential Latinos” of 2008 and 2011 by The Imagen Foundation.

Mike Marriner is a co-founder of Roadtrip Nation, and leads Roadtrip Nation’s program management and strategic partnership efforts with organizations including KQED, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the College Board, The California Department of Education, AVID, and other national and statewide organizations that help bring the Roadtrip Nation Experience to millions of people.

Andrew Broy is the president of the Illinois Network of Charter Schools (INCS), a statewide advocacy and charter school support organization serving 152 charter campuses in Illinois that collectively educate more than 60,000 public school students. Working directly with legislative leadership, INCS supported the enactment of the Illinois Charter School Quality Act of 2011, which established an independent charter school authorizer.

As a humanities teacher at Codman Academy Charter Public School in Boston, Chaffee takes risks every day to improve learning for all of her students. In the classroom, she strives to create lessons that demonstrate how education can be a transformative tool for social justice, and she encourages her students to see themselves as having the power to make change in the world based on lessons from the past.

He is a co-author of all three Roadtrip Nation books, has been featured on national outlets such as NBC’s Today Show and Esquire’s “Best & Brightest” list, is an Ashoka Fellow, and a frequent public speaker.

Prior to joining INCS, Broy was the Associate State Superintendent for the State of Georgia. In that role, Andrew helped craft Georgia’s winning Race to the Top application and worked with legislative leadership to draft numerous education reform initiatives later enacted into law, including teacher evaluation reform, the Charter Commission Act, and elected school board reform. An attorney by training, Broy was a civil rights litigator in the Atlanta office of Sutherland from 2001-2006 and specialized in school finance disputes, desegregation cases, and charter school law. Broy serves on a number of local and national boards and began his career as a high school teacher and a member of Teach for America.

Chaffee tries to infuse the hard work of learning with joy, not only in her classroom but throughout the school. For example, she is the coordinator of a schoolwide Community Circle every Thursday where all students in the school come together to celebrate successes, share good news, and dig into serious conversations together. Chaffee has taught for the past 10 years, nine of which have been in her current role, and is a National Board Certified Teacher.

CAMINO NUEVO CHARTER ACADEMY Camino Nuevo schools stand out for providing a full range of student and family support services and delivering an education tailored to the specific needs and demands of the neighborhoods they serve. Students have access to college-preparatory classes and afterschool programs including art, music, and dance. Families also have the option to enroll their children in a bilingual program. In 2015, Camino Nuevo earned the Bright Spot Award from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics for closing achievement gaps between English learners and native English speakers.
