‘SUN TAX? IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A PROBLEM.’
ECO ENERGY ON GOING SOLAR Supplier and installer of solar panels Eco Energy lost almost all of its business in Curaçao, after the introduction of Sun Tax in 2014. Nonetheless the company acknowledges the need for this monthly fee for the use of solar installations. ‘The fee itself is not the issue,’ says general manager Eelco Baak, ‘but we do think it is too high.’
BAAK: ‘LET ME CLEAR UP ONE MI IS RELEVANT TO THE DEBATE ON COUNTRY IS NOT THE ONLY ONE TAX. SEVERAL COUNTRIES AND S ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE GRID.’

Innovations in business models could transform society, argues the economist and successful global entrepreneur. ‘We have been fighting for a green economy for decades. But this has resulted in alternatives that require us to pay more for what is good for us and for the Earth. That is not right. Because it means it is for the rich only.’ Pauli says we need to rethink how we get to sustainability. ‘Be more innovative, more creative. Focus not on core business, but figure out how to serve the people, create jobs and increase productivity.’

EOLE WATER
CASE 64: ‘GIVE US WIND, WE GIVE YOU WATER.’ Eole Water has invented the first wind turbine able to create drinkingwater from condensed air. Today, 150 million of people worldwide live in remote areas without any access to safe drinking water. The company’s mission is to provide these isolated communities with drinking water.
BIOWAVE
CASE 41: INSPIRED BY SEA WEED Wave and current energy contains roughly 1,000 times more kinetic energy than wind, permitting smaller devices to produce more power. The bioWave generator move in the ocean as if it were kelp, following the flow of the currents and the waves. When a tsunami hits the area, the bioWave will lay flat on the bottom just like kelp does. https://vimeo.com/17744727
WIND-IT
CASE 11: WIND ENERGY WITHOUT PYLONS Wind-It launched the first telecommunication tower integrating vertical wind turbines. Completed by solar panels to maximize autonomy, this tower is a reliable clean power solution for remote areas and other off grid and poor grid sites. https://vimeo.com/152397140
WIND ENERG

CASE 12: WIND ENERGY WITHOUT TURBINES Buddhists pray by putting flags in the wind. Each flag pole could be equipped with a cord, attached to a flutter, generating electricity while praying. This would be the ultimate form of ‘holy energy’, the more wind the more electricity - the more you pray! Go for more cases to: www.theblueeconomy.org
DRAGON FRU
UIT
CURAÇAO NATIVE FRUIT This vividly pink tropical fruit with yellow- and green-tipped spines is actually a type of cactus. The dragon fruit’s texture is often compared to that of a kiwi due to the tiny black seeds inside. This fruit, also called pitaya, is native to Curaçao. Read more?
