From the time I was a child, I knew not everyone was deserving enough to be born into the heritage and strength of the Giant Empire. That had been drilled into my brain, spoken into my subconscious, whispered as I dreamed. According to my people, we needed no better example than the Sepawns who lived among us. Taught to regard them as nearly worthless mush-heads, I learned that they were fit only to serve us. Even Hannah Meadows, the competent Sepawn woman who ran our estate’s households, was lower than the lowliest Giant.

But when I was ten, I accidentally met Hannah’s daughter, Promise. All the indoctrination in the world could not stop me from realizing that there was something special about Promise, a realization that grew as our “accidental” meetings continued Promise dreamed of a life on the Sepawn Islands, a life bigger than the one she could have in the Giant Empire When she sets off with the currency her parents have scraped together and a mysterious old ring, who am I to stop her?

Then word of the Night Stalkers’ assault on the Sepawns makes its way back to us Suddenly, nothing is more important than finding Promise and ensuring her safety The Night Stalkers’ attack reveals their greed, a greed that cannot go unchecked It also reveals that, no matter how forbidden it is, this Giant is determined to keep his promise.
