What ‘Cha Got Cooking? Open floors plans have been the rage for some time. A shift in that trend, however, reportedly may be on the not-so-distant horizon.
COLUMBUS, OH EDITION
Advertising Deadline
According to survey data presented by Better Homes & Gardens and Traditional Home earlier this year, the number of responders who said they prefer a combined kitchen/family room/everyday eating space dropped from 52 percent down to 46 percent. Granted, it’s not a huge change, and the open floor plan concept still tops the consumer preference list, yet industry experts are taking note. Trends come and go but what’s really interesting about this potential shift is the unexpected driving force behind it...food. Namely, food preparation - or, the lack of it. The proliferation of online food-delivery platforms like Blue Apron, FreshDirect, Amazon Prime and mobile food delivery options like UberEats and others may actually end up being a major catalyst in what future house hunters include on their top “must have” list.

As home delivery of meals/food becomes easier, more cost effective and more mainstream, functionality of kitchens will almost certainly change. A large, open kitchen where guests/family have room to gather while the host cooks for them, could be less appealing.

“I can see the kitchen going off to a galley space, especially if that means you can design a bigger, better entertaining space with a service center. There’s no need to devote as much space for prepping and cooking,” says Mollie Carmichael, principal of Meyers Research.

While the impact on open concept design remains to be seen, and will likely take years to play out, you can be sure design analysts, architects and builders will be watching the trend. For now, I’ll leave trend-watching to them. I’ll just keep my eye out for that sweet little delivery truck.

Extended Warranties & Service Contracts -Understanding the Difference
If you’re buying an electronic device or a major appliance, you may be offered the chance to buy an “extended warranty” or service contract. Is the Product Likely to Need Repairs? You may not benefit from a service contract if the product isn’t likely to need repairs or if the potential cost of repairs is low. Check websites that offer information about products that are most likely to need expensive, or extensive, repairs. When shopping, compare specific manufacturers and products and buy from a reliable product from a company with a good reputation. Does the Service Contract Really Provide Extra Coverage? Compare the warranty coverage to the service contract to see if there’s any benefit to additional coverage. Read the costs and terms of the service contract. Depending on the terms, a service contract could last less than a year or more than five. Accidental damage may not be covered. And there may be clauses that allow the company to deny coverage if, for example, you don’t follow their instructions for routine maintenance. A service contract might cover specific parts of the product or specific repairs. If the terms don’t list a part or a function as specifically covered, assume that it’s not. Keep in mind that you may have other expenses, like a deductible or a fee each time the item is serviced. You may be required to mail the product to a repair center — so consider shipping costs. Some service contracts set reimbursement amounts. How Are Claims Handled? Find out if the retailer or someone else takes care of the repairs. What’s the process for a claim? For example, would you return the item to the store where you bought it? If a local retailer or dealer offers the service contract, you may be able to get local service only. Who Is Responsible for the Contract? There is little you can do if you have a service
newsShorts contract with a company that goes out of business and cannot repay claims. Before you sign a contract, think about the company’s financial situation and consider whether the business is reputable. Look for an address and a phone number for questions or problems. Do an online search with the name of the company and words like “review” or “complaint” to see if there are negative reviews of the company. Some consumer advocates suggest that people are better off skipping extended warranties, and putting the money they would’ve spent in a savings account. If you need repairs, you’ll have your savings to fall back on. And if you don’t need repairs, you’ll have a little extra money in the bank. (ftc.gov)

Homeowners Claims You Didn’t Think Would Happen Homeowners insurance is a practical investment to help protect you, your family and your property in the event of unforeseen and unexpected losses. Traditionally, it’s associated with fire damage, burst or leaking pipes, or stolen property, but occasionally it covers unusual events that make for sensational news stories and viral videos. Here are four claims homeowners never thought would happen to them Bear B&B -Bears are notoriously curious and intelligent creatures that also have an acute sense of smell. Keep doors and windows on ground floors closed and locked while cooking or if you leave the house. A bear can easily get through the screen of an open window or manipulate a lever-like door handle to enter your home and cause significant damage. “Encountering a bear inside your home would be a very frightening experience,” says Christopher O’Rourke, Vice President of Property Claims at Mercury Insurance. “Safety should be your first priority, so call your local police or animal control station for help. You can worry about any potential damages after the animal
leaves the residence, because your homeowners policy will most likely cover any damage to your home (though not your personal property), unless of course the bear is a family pet.” The sky is falling - China’s Tiangong-1 space station plummeted back to Earth and made its re-entry into the atmosphere earlier this year, breaking apart over the southern Pacific Ocean. The odds of debris from the space station hitting you were less than one in 1 trillion, according to the Aerospace Corporation. If it had hit your home, though, homeowners insurance would’ve covered it. Your house is stolen -Yes, you read that correctly. Your homeowners insurance will cover the entire house, not just the contents inside, if it is stolen. O’Rourke explains, “We had an insured who was away on vacation and when he returned the foundation of his home was all that remained. “A house moving company had mixed up the address with another house down the street that was scheduled to be moved. The movers came in, transported the house to another location and thought their job was done - wrong! “You can only imagine his surprise at the mistake. While homeowners insurance covered the cost of getting things restored back to normal, I would suspect this was one of the strangest situations any insurer has ever encountered,” says O’Rourke. Fore! -Recreational golfers can cause a lot of damage to personal property. If you live on a golf course, your house has probably been hit many times by errant shots - breaking windows, damaging roofs and leaving divots in exterior walls. So, who’s responsible for these injuries and damage? “Simply put, the golfer who hit the shot is responsible,” says O’Rourke. “There is good news, however, because recreational golfers would be covered by a homeowners, condo owners or renters insurance policy for damage or injuries that result from the wayward shot.” Mercury recommends reviewing your homeowners insurance policy annually with your local insurance agent to ensure that you’re adequately covered for any unforeseen losses, both unusual and ordinary. replacement windows exaggerate how much money people might save on their heating and cooling bills when new windows are installed.
Planning to do some painting? If finding paint low in VOCs — volatile organic compounds — is important to you, remember: you need to look for lowVOC orVOC-free base paint andcolorant.
Save You Money? Before You Buy Paint Sometimes companies that sell The truth is the money you could save depends on several factors including what material your existing windows are made of, how well your home is insulated, the size of your home and how many windows it has, the shade around your home and the climate you live in. Consider the upfront costs. The price per window can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the materials and features you choose and cost of installation. The choices you make about materials, style, glazing, and installation could have a big impact on your energy bill. And some features, like how easy they are to take care of, make windows more appealing for other reasons. Different window frame materials can affect the appearance, durability, and insulation of your window. For example, wood-framed windows provide good insulation, but are heavy and highmaintenance. Vinyl-frame windows insulate well, and don’t need painting. The style of a window can affect how well your window insulates. Single-hung, double-hung, and sliding windows leak more air than casement, awning, and hopper windows. Certain window glazes and glass may provide better insulation, light quality, and condensation resistance. For example, windows with lowemissivity (low-e) coatings often are more energy efficient than windows without. Some materials and features, like tilt-in sashes, make windows easier to care for.If your windows are not installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, you might not get the savings or comfort you expect. (ftc.gov)
What’s Low-VOC Paint? If you want to spruce up a room, give your house a new look, or do some remodeling, and your plans include a paint job, you may have seen labels for low-VOC or VOC-free paint. Why would you want to think about VOCs? VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, found in paint and other materials, are emitted as gases. Not only might they cause smog by contributing to ground-level ozone formation, but they also may have negative effects on your health. Is That Color Low-VOC? You’ve flipped through a million paint chips and finally picked the color you want. But if VOCs played a part in your paint choice, it’s important to know that stores will make that color by adding colorants to a base paint. And while the base paint may be low-VOC or VOC-free, the colorant may be anything but. In fact, tinting can significantly increase the VOC level of a paint, depending on the color choice. The bottom line: if you want low-VOC paint, look for low-VOC base paint and low-VOC colorant.
TOP 10 WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY
In addition to helping your electric cooperative through a period of peak energy use, conserving electricity will also help you save money on your electric bill. Here are the top ten tips that any good energy saver should do first.
1- Replace any light bulb, especially ones that are on more than one hour per day, with a lightemitting diode (LED) bulb. 2- Close shades and drapes during the day to help keep heat out in summer. 3- Plug electronic devices such as cable boxes, printers and TVs into power strips to turn off during vacations or long periods without use. 4- Outside your home, caulk around all penetrations including telephone, electrical, cable, gas, water spigots, dryer vents, etc. 5- Change HVAC air filters monthly. 6- Use dishwasher’s air-dry cycle instead of the heat-dry cycle to dry dishes. 7- Keep your garage door down. A warmer garage in the winter and cooler garage in the summer will save energy. 8- Set water heater temperature no higher than 120° 9- Make sure dryer vent hose is not kinked or clogged. 10- Ensure refrigerator door seals are tight. Looking For
a Last-Minute
Vacation Rental?
Keep these tips in mind to protect yourself and your investment. • Never wire money or pay with a prepaid or gift card for a vacation rental. • If you receive an email pressuring you to make a decision on the spot for a rental, ignore it and move on. • Super cheap rental offers can be a sign of a scam. Do research to confirm the deal is legitimate before jumping in. • Get a copy of the contract before you send any deposit money. Check that the address of the property really exists. If the property is located in a resort, call the front desk and confirm the location of the property and other details on the contract.

Quick DIY Home Improvement Projects
The words home improvement usually conjure up images of major undertakings like tiling your bathroom or kitchen or tearing down a wall, taking hours or even days to complete. The fact is there are some meaningful home improvements you can finish in under two hours.
For those who already own a second home, the increasing popularity of renting those homes to others is boosting retirement savings, college tuition payments and disposable income.
doorbell takes just a few minutes and you can monitor visitors at your front door on your smartphone through an app. This is a way to add some security to your home. You can be anywhere with your phone but answer your front door and see who’s there. They have no idea where you are, home or otherwise.
How It Works: Here’s helpful information to know when estimating how much you can earn by renting out a second home to others: Vacation home owners who list their properties for rent on 1) Need more daylight? Have you ever wished your home had more daylight? Maybe you want to bring light to a small place like a closet or laundry room. Or maybe you have a room with a window but still not enough light. One solution is a daylighting system from Solatube. This product can be installed in under two hours and floods the interior with natural light. 2) Concerned about security? Installing a video
3) Dealing with poor indoor air quality? The upstairs can often be hotter than the downstairs. Air can be humid and wet. House odors from cooking, pets, etc., can hang around. A Whole House Fan is quiet (with a light white noise) and can be installed without reframing. When you open the windows with the whole house fan on, it strips out the heat from the home as well as the unwelcome smells. In summer months it keeps the house cooler and it eliminates stale air in the winter.
4) Considering a new bathroom fan? Another product that installs quickly is an upgraded bathroom fan. It comes with a variety of options such as heaters and lights. An upgraded bathroom fan can dramatically reduce bathroom humidity and odors and run more quietly. 5) Still using outdated light bulbs? An easy home improvement project is to swap out light bulbs for LEDs. Even CFL bulbs can’t hold a candle to LED bulbs, which, while more expensive, last up to 20 years or more. This gives you an idea of some ways to spruce up your home in under two hours. But the changes will be long-lasting! For more easy home improvement ideas, visit www.solatube.com/residential. (BPT)
