Ten Tips To Prepare Your Home For Cold Weather

With winter weather comes colder outdoor temperatures and the desire for a warm and comfortable home. Following these 10 tips will help you conserve energy, lower utility bills, increase the efficiency and longevity of your heating system and maintain comfortable temperatures in your home. 1. Seal your home. Inspect windows, doors and the exterior of your home for cracks or leaks. Caulk, patch or weather-strip any areas that might leak cold air and make your heating system work harder. Seal and insulate your ducts and replace screens with storm windows and storm doors.

2. Cover windows. Use drapes and blinds to reduce heat loss through windows. However, windows with direct sunlight may benefit from having the blinds up during daylight hours, as sunlight can help heat the space. 3. Clean gutters. Clogged gutters and drains can form ice dams that prevent your drainage system from working properly and lead to water seeping into your home. Be certain that dirt slopes away from your house to ensure rain or snow will drain away from the house. 4. Check your insulation. Be certain the insulation in your attic, ceilings, exterior and basement

Older homes often have a unique charm but few have insulation that meets modern energy efficiency standards. This can result in air leaks, wasted energy and high utility bills. One way to fix this is with spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation. It can be seamlessly added in and around walls, attics and roofs. By sealing cracks, seams and joints, some SPF products provide a waterproof membrane that acts as a vapor and air barrier, which in addition to insulating improves energy efficiency. A properly insulated home can reduce heating and cooling needs by 30 percent, according to the Department of Energy. Many homeowners don’t realize that the attic is one of the main places where heat and cold air can escape. As the Department of Energy explains, holes in a typical attic account for 15 percent of a home’s energy loss. Cracks and gaps let air out and rainwater in. To protect these valuables, it’s a good idea to schedule them. Scheduling something means adding additional coverage to your policy by getting something appraised and then insuring the full cost of the item in case it ever needs to be replaced.

Cooler nights and shorter days are a sure sign winter is on its way. Smart homeowners use this time to prepare their homes against the season’s wrath. You too can protect your property and eliminate winter worries with a few simple projects that can be completed in one weekend or less. Dispose of dead leaves quickly

When all those beautiful colored leaves turn brown, you know they will soon fall in your yard. It’s important to collect and compost dead leaves for several reasons. First, leaving yard waste over winter encourages mold growth, which can cause breathing problems. Second, leaves left on the ground can choke out grass, so you’ll have a spotty yard come spring. To save time, forget raking and invest in a quality blower. The Husqvarna 125B handheld blower is ideal for home use, providing high power with a smart ergonomic design. Clean clogged gutters
