This Winter, Reduce Competition & Stress Stop waiting - go ahead and put your home on the market. Even now, with temperatures dropping and the seasonal bustling, it’s a good time to sell. In fact, Greg Jaeger, vice president at USAA Bank and former real estate agent, says waiting could decrease potential buyers, especially if mortgage rates increase soon and price some out of the market. Delaying a sale also could increase your competition and stress. “Those who sell their homes in the winter can reap financial and emotional benefits since they are not waiting until everyone else is trying to sell,” Jaeger says.

Less Competition Your home has a greater chance of standing out from the crowd in the winter months, December through February. In the summer, you have to compete with other sellers looking to lure buyers expecting deals. To be sure, sales trends are different among colder and warmer states. And summer is often a more ideal time for families with young children to plan moves before school starts. However, you may be overlooking another group of buyers, Jaeger said. “During the summer, buyers look like families. In the winter they look like investors,” he said. Sellers often are able to ask more for their homes in winter, Jaeger said. A study by online brokerage firm Redfin found average sellers earn above their asking price December through March than they do in the summer months. In addition, in winter months a home is on the market for an average of 26 days, compared to 33 days in non-winter seasons, according to Redfin’s data.

That ecosystem is tense when activity is the busiest, Jaeger said. In peak buying season, there’s overwhelming demand to process transactions, with potentially an overwhelmed system for processing them. “You can help reduce the typical home buying and selling stress by selling your home during the winter ‘shoulder season’ and working with experts who really understand your needs,” he said. Renovating to age in place? No one relishes the prospect of having to move out of his or her home due to age-related health, mobility or dexterity issues. Fortunately for people who want to stay put, a range of home improvements can make it easier to remain in your home as you grow older. Targeting key areas like bathrooms and kitchens can improve a house’s long-term livability even on a modest budget, says Lee Saunders, founder of CA-based Adapted Living. “Today, the biggest challenge we have is getting people to understand they don’t have to settle for an industrial or commercial look in order to renovate their homes for aging in place.” Often when people develop mobility or dexterity issues, they find their existing bathrooms are not in a convenient location in the house, or aren’t configured with safety in mind. They may need to add a bathroom in a small space or reconfigure the ones they have. When renovating an existing bath or creating a new bathroom where one did not previously exist, homeowners should keep key considerations in mind.

Multiple light sources can help reduce glare and shadows - two dangerous visual effects in bathrooms, where most home falls occur. Flooring material should be slip-resistant and grab bars are essential in showers, bath tubs and near toilets. Shower heads should be on a slide bar that allows the spray to be raised or lowered depending on the needs and height of the user. Showers and faucets should be controlled by levers, rather than knobs, and all showers should have thermostatic controls to reduce the risk of burns. Whether you’re adding a half bath in a corner of your master bedroom where no bathroom existed before, or replacing a high step-over tub with a roll-in shower, traditional plumbing can be costly - especially in homes with slab foundations and no readily accessible below-floor drainage. Saunders uses the Sanigrind Pro system by Saniflo to minimize the need to break through concrete. The product can handle drainage for a shower, sink and toilet. Mobility and dexterity challenges can make everyday tasks like cooking and cleaning difficult to achieve in an ordinary kitchen. These electric lifts allow homeowners to adjust the height of key work areas depending on whether they’re sitting or standing while using the spot. Winter Storm Safety Roof Protection

When it comes to snow and ice, most of us tend to look down. We don’t want to slip on a slick sidewalk, we want to keep our driveways and walkways free of snow, and we’re cautious about driving when the roads are icy. But it’s just as important to look up when snow is a risk, protecting your roof in the winter is just as important as keeping your driveway and sidewalks clear. Many of the roof-protecting recommendations below are best done before storm season even begins, but can be helpful at any point. Even taking precautions a few days before a predicted storm can prevent damage. 1. Keep gutters clear. Make sure your gutters, downspouts, and drains are clear of leaves and other debris before storm season begins. Blocked gutters can cause water to back up and freeze, potentially damaging the roof. Have professionals clear your gutters after most of the leaves have fallen from the trees, or consider installing gutter screens that will prevent blockage.

2. Trim overhanging tree branches. Storms that are accompanied by gusting winds or cause heavy snow or ice to coat trees can result in fallen branches that can damage your home. Before the season starts, trim any low or overhanging branches that look as if they’d be at risk of falling on your house (or cars and power lines). It’s crucial to keep every room in your home safe around young children including places that often go overlooked, such as the laundry room. Babies are curious, and even at a very young age, they tend to get into things that they shouldn’t.They share these three easy steps that can help keep your youngsters safe from the potential dangers hidden in the laundry room. Step 1: Safely store all household cleaning products. Household cleaners contain substances that can be harmful if swallowed. To pre-

vent accidents involving these products, it’s important to always store these items safely up and out of reach of children. That same caution needs to be applied to liquid laundry packets. According to a recent national survey conducted by ACI, 61% of parents and caregivers are storing laundry packets in-sight or in-reach of children. Laundry packets contain highly-concentrated detergent and can cause injury if exposed to the eyes or if swallowed. Make sure these products are stored in a cabinet with a child safety lock to keep away curious little fingers.
