AUTHOR: HILARY WERRE
One remarkable individual stands out as a beacon of togetherness in our mountain town of Cashiers, where community bonds are cherished. Jill Katz, the co-owner of Crossroads Custard, serves delicious frozen treats and has woven the community fabric into the heart of her establishment. Her journey from the sunshine state of Florida to the Blue Ridge Mountains is a tale of hospitality, warmth, and an unwavering commitment to building lasting connections.
A Journey from Sunshine to Snow: Jill Katz’s Evolution in the World of Hospitality
Jill Katz’s odyssey in the world of hospitality traces its origins to the warm embrace of her native Florida. An innate flair for hospitality was ingrained in her at an early age, as her family was deeply entrenched in the industry. However, Jill truly nurtured her passion amidst the pristine landscapes of Minnesota. Here, she took the helm at the Grandview Lodge in Nisswa, situated on the enchanting Gull Lake. Her dedication to crafting unforgettable guest experiences began to bloom in these serene surroundings. Her journey, spanning from the sunny shores of Florida to the snow-covered landscapes of Minnesota, is a testament to her unwavering commitment to the art of hospitality.
What is one thing that most people might not know about running a custard shop but wish they did?
“Having an excellent product is crucial, but another very important consideration is providing a pleasant experience for the guest from the time they walk through the door. We achieve this through a combination of eclectic decor, clean restrooms, and most importantly, friendly interaction between our staff and guests.”
A Sweet Beginning in Cashiers
Jill’s transition to the picturesque town of Cashiers marked the start of an extraordinary chapter in her hospitality career. Alongside her husband, Badge, she co-founded Crossroads Custard, a local gem that is much more than just a frozen dessert haven. From the outset, their vision was clear: to create a space where community thrives and every visitor feels like part of an extended family.
Can you share any memorable moments or stories from your time at Crossroads Custard, such as a particularly happy customer or a challenging situation you had to overcome?
“The most heartwarming moments occur for us when we interact with the young children that are in the shop. A “thumbs-up” gesture when asked if they like the custard, or a response of, “this is my favorite place to come,” or memorable when a sixyear-old girl asked how old she had to be before she could start working here. These heartfelt comments from the young ones are truly music to our ears and help validate what we are trying to achieve.”
Scoops of Togetherness
Crossroads Custard is more than just a place to indulge in frozen delights; it’s a hub where residents and visitors gather to share stories, laughter, and friendship. Jill and her dedicated team have cultivated an inviting atmosphere with cozy seating, friendly faces, and a welcoming ambiance. “We locally source ingredients, like Chocolate Heaven Company, and support local farmers such as Killer Bees Honey.” This magical blend has transformed the custard shop into a beloved community gathering spot.
What are some plans or goals for Crossroads Custard, and how do you see the business evolving in the years to come?
“We are trying to find ways to expand our business beyond the shop’s four walls. We are currently renovating a 1978 Chinook camper into a mobile custard stand, in order to attend local events, festivals, and gatherings. We also are delving into providing food catering for small events, which is an under-served market in our area.”
Back and Paying Tribute
Jill Katz’s legacy at Crossroads Custard transcends the realm of business. She has become an integral part of Cashiers’ close-knit community, a testament to her unwavering commitment to building connections and fostering togetherness. Her journey continues as the newly elected president of the Cashiers Rotary Association. In this mountain town, where community is paramount, Jill Katz shines as a true community builder, a custodian of warm hospitality, and an irreplaceable thread in the tapestry of Cashiers’ vibrant life.
A Taste of Tradition
Jill Katz’s commitment to her community extends beyond the walls of Crossroads Custard. She recognizes the importance of supporting local heroes, and the custard shop often hosts fundraisers and events to honor Cashiers’ first responders and service members. Her dedication to giving back showcases her profound gratitude and respect for those safeguarding the community.
Jill’s dedication to celebrating local traditions and heritage is evident in the custard shop’s offerings. She often introduces unique flavors inspired by the seasons, local festivals, and cherished family recipes. These nods to tradition evoke a sense of nostalgia and resonate deeply with her patrons, further reinforcing the sense of community that Crossroads Custard embodies.
