Accomodation: if you are planning on staying during important dates or holidays, make sure you make a booking in advance.

Vestimenta: En verano necesitas estar preparado para la eventualidad. En verano no está demás un corta viento o una parka y/o polar delgado. No olvidar bloqueador solar y traje de baño. En invierno es indispensable un gorro para el viento frío, zapatos resistentes al agua, polar o ropa de nieve. Para subir al volcán puedes arrendar equipo en las agencias de turismo. No olvides bloqueador solar y crema para los labios.

Cómo llegar / Getting There Cómo llegar / Getting There En Avión: En temporada alta, desde fines de diciembre a fines de febrero hay vuelos directos Santiago – Pucón, vía Lan Chile y Sky airline. Durante temporada baja, los vuelos llegan hasta Temuco (Aeropuerto Maquehue) ubicado a 110 kms de Pucón. Desde ese aeropuerto hay salidas en transfer previamente concertado con agencias de Turismo.

Ubicación / Location Ubicación / Location Pucón se encuentra ubicado a los pies del majestuoso Volcán Villarrica, en la IX Región de la Araucanía, a tan sólo 100 km, de su capital regional Temuco y a 870 km de Santiago de Chile. A escasos 90 km. se encuentra el paso fronterizo con Argentina cuyo nombre es Mamuil Malal / Tromen.

Clima / Weather Clima / Weather Clima: Pucón cuenta con un clima con tendencia mediterránea, veranos templados y cortos, mientras que los inviernos son fríos y húmedos. La humedad relativa promedio anual es de 70%. Precipitaciones: Las precipitaciones tienen un registro medio anual de 2.500 mm. Historia / History Historia / History La misión militar era resguardar el paso fronterizo con Argentina para lo cual necesitaban construir un fuerte militar como base de apoyo y abastecimiento para las operaciones de campaña previstas en el interior de los Andes, y protegerse de los aborigenes pampeanos y neuquinos que el ejército argentino forzaba a emigrar.

Lo más probable es que ninguno de los tripulantes del pequeño destacamento enviado en esta misión, imaginó que por el lago que cruzaban a la vista de un enorme volcán humeante, más tarde se convertiría en un pueblo cuyo magnetismo traspasaría fronteras e invitaría a ciudadanos del mundo a disfrutar de sus bondades naturales. El destacamento enviado desde Villarrica por el Coronel Urrutia, fundador de Pucón en 1883, fue recibido por los principales caciques de lugar: Paillalef, Huaquifil, Epuin, Panguilef y Antinao. Apellidos que aún prevalecen en la actualidad. El lugar escogido para construir el fuerte militar, se ubicó donde actualmente se encuentra la plaza principal de Pucón. La Guarnición, como se llamaba a esta construcción a fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, fue utilizada como la primera oficina de Aduana. El tráfico marino era la única alternativa para conectar a Villarrica con Pucón. Y fue en el sector de la Poza, lugar donde hoy se encuentra el Puerto Don Santiago, el primer puerto donde se desarrolló la mayor actividad comercial de la época. Desde allí se embarcaban grandes cantidades de durmientes con destino a Villarrica y Loncoche. En 1940 se inauguró el camino que conecta con Villarrica. Esto permitió mayor afluencia de visitantes muchos de los cuales finalmente se quedaron para siempre atraídos por el paisaje y su potencial comercial. Sin duda la pesca fue uno de los primeros atractivos turísticos que produjo la generación de servicios adicionados a esta actividad, de hecho, se decía que Pucón era el paraíso de los pescadores y el origen del pueblo se debía a ella. A medida que fueron pasando los años el interés comercial se volcó netamente hacia el turismo. La materia prima estaba y la cordialidad de sus habitantes y su entrono natural cautivó a todo aquel que lo visitaba. Para entonces se acostumbraba a que las casas de familias lugareñas albergaran a turistas originando una importante alternativa de ingreso. Posteriormente se construyeron hostales, hoteles potenciando el desarrollo comunal y ocupando mano de obra local. A partir de éstos y muchos otros datos históricos se dio origen a lo que hoy conocemos.

Historia / History Historia / History The military mission was to protect the frontier

By that time one could already see a few houses and buildings amidst the lush vegetation—these where families of settlers that saw development opportunities in a town that was slowly growing with a great deal of sacrifices and effort. But it wasn’t all work—horse races where entertaining activities during the day, and at night the fun went on in the party houses of the Gringa Pobre, the Chela flaca or the Plumaris, where people passed the long and cold winter nights. The road connecting with Villarrica was inaugurated in 1940. This allowed a greater influx of visitors, many of which finally stayed permanently, attracted by the landscape and its commercial potential.

The deployment sent from Villarrica by Colonel Urritia, who founded Pucon in 1883, was received by the main chieftains of the place: Paillalef, Huaquifil, Epuin, Panguilef and Antinao. These surnames are still common nowadays.

Certainly fishing was one of the first tourist attractions and boosted services related to this activity. In fact it was said that Pucon was the fisherman’s heaven and the birth of the town is owed to it.

The place chosen to build the military base is where now we see the main square of Pucon. The Guarnicion, as this building was called at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, was used as the first Customs office. Sea traffic was the only alternative for connecting Villarrica and Pucon. And it was in the Poza sector, now the Don Santiago Port, was the first port with a major commercial activity development in that time. From there large amounts of sleeper wood was shipped towards Villarrica and Loncoche..

As the years went by the commercial interest turned wholly towards tourism. The basic ingredients were there, and the friendliness of its people and beauty of landscape captivated every visitor. By then it was the custom for local families to offer accommodation to tourists, giving them an important additional income. Afterwards hostels and hotels were built, boosting community development and employing local workforce. What we now know as Pucon is the result of these and many other historical facts.

Caminando por Pucón / Walking Around Pucón Caminando por Pucón / Walking Around Pucón Este hermoso poblado, de arquitectura basada principalmente en la madera, destaca por sus construcciones cuidadas y armoniosas con una tendencia al estilo montañés. Caminando por sus calles se observa su particular señalética (madera tallada) que junto a los letreros comerciales del mismo material y con aplicaciones de arena volcánica, le brinda un sello particular al Centro de Pucón.

La avenida principal es O´Higgins, en ella se encuentra una parte importante de todos los servicios básicos como lo es la Municipalidad, la oficina de turismo, carabineros, bomberos, galerías comerciales, chocolaterías, tres sucursales bancarias, cajas de cambio, farmacias, supermercado, tour operadores y agencias de turismo, entre otros. Por algún motivo en especial, en la calle Fresia se concentra la mayor cantidad de ofertas gastronómica. Sobre todo en verano las mesas, sillas y mantelería se posan en la vereda a lo largo de sus cuadras, donde se puede encontrar desde pastelería tradicional, sushi, parrilladas uruguayas, comida italiana hasta la más exquisita comida criolla.

Se recomienda visitar también otras calles circundantes a las calles principales del centro de Pucón, donde siempre se puede encontrar locales más sencillos con menús variados que vale la pena degustar y con precios más asequibles. También encontrarás otros atractivos como galerías artesanales en donde se manifiesta la cultura mapuche en telares, joyas entre otros souvenirs tradicionales como las flores de madera, tallados figurativos y artesanía en cuero. Frente a la plaza principal se encuentra la Iglesia (fundada en 1967), y la calle Ansorena, puedes acceder a la playa de Pucón o caminar en sentido contrario hacia el volcán donde al terminar la calle y subiendo hasta donde se encuentra el monasterio las Clarisas puedes apreciar una espectacular vista panorámica de toda la ciudad. Imperdible los atardeceres veraniegos desde la poza ubicada a un par de cuadras del centro o desde la playa. Un paseo por la ciclovía, demarcada en el Camino internacional, es un recorrido que permite palpar la vida cotidiana de sus habitantes.

We also recommend visiting other peripheral streets around downtown Pucon, where one can

always find more modest restaurants with varied menus worth tasting, at a more affordable price. You will also find other attractions such as craftwork shops where the Mapuche culture is displayed in weaving and jewelry among other traditional souvenirs such as wooden flowers, figurative carvings and leather craft work. In front of the main square is the church (founded in 1967), the Itur institute of tourism, the Gran Hotel Pucon, Hotel Huincahue and some time this year the 5 star hotel being rebuilt after the incident of the late 17th of September. Regatas Pucón- Villarrica. En medio del descanso veraniego también hay competencias de veleros y otras embarcaciones que zarpan desde la poza hacia el otro extremo del lago. Un espectáculo muy llamativo que se realizar en plena época estival. Ironman Triatlón en Pucón. Ésta es una de las pruebas de resistencia más difundida a nivel mundial, el circuito se inicia en la Playa Grande, con una competencia de nado en el Lago Villarrica, posteriormente toman la bicicleta y comienza un circuito acordonado por las calles de Pucón y terminan en una carrera que pone a prueba la resistencia y tesón de sus competidores. La premiación y clausura se realiza en la plaza Grande. Desafío de los Volcanes: Su ruta traspasa fronteras ya que contempla cruzar la cordillera hasta San Martín de los Andes, Argentina, y regresar por Panguipulli. En el circuito los avezados competidores deben realizar un tramo en kayak, bicicleta y finalmente trote.

Atractivos turísticos / Tourist atractions El Volcán Villarrica Pertenece al Cinturón de fuego del Pacífico. Mide 2840 m.s.n.m. está activo y cuenta con 82 erupciones entre 1558 y 1984. Las excursiones se realizan durante todo el año, mientras el clima y el mismo volcán lo permitan. En invierno su cono se observa absolutamente nevado y desde su cumbre se pueden ver al menos siete lagos. En verano queda al descubierto su base de arena volcánica, pero su cumbre permanece intacta, blanca y humeante. En las noches despejadas se puede ver a simple vista como hierve la lava en su cráter. Los ojos del Caburgua Su belleza radica en el intenso color turquesa que se aprecia en sus aguas. Este flujo de agua corresponde al desagüe subterráneo del Lago Caburgua originado por un tapón volcánico. En sus aguas no está permitido bañarse, tampoco en la laguna azul ubicada en el mismo recinto y se caracteriza por su intenso color azulino. Posee instalaciones básicas y se encuentra abierto todo el año. Cuevas volcánicas Es literalmente un paseo bajo la tierra. De origen glacio-volcánica, es decir, que su formación se debe al paso de la lava sobre una gran masa de hielo, que al derretirse dejó una especie de túnel de 400 metros de extensión. Se puede llegar directamente o a través de agencias turísticas. Saltos de Agua Tres de los más conocidos se encuentran ubicados prácticamente en un mismo sector. Para acceder a ellos debe tomar el camino internacional y tomar la carretera que lleva hacia Curarehue, el primer salto se denomina Salto “Palguín”, y tiene una altura de 60 mts. Más arriba encontrará la entrada al Salto “La China”, su cascada tiene 73 mts. de altura. Continuando por el mismo camino se puede visitar el Salto “El León”, que posee la mayor altura alcanzando los 95 mts. Este paseo puede ser contratado a través de agencias de turismo o visitarlos directamente en auto particular. También existe la alternativa de conocer el Salto del Marimán, ubicado a 12 kms. de Pucón camino a Caburgua, el cual posee un sendero paralelo al Río Trancura, donde se puede ver las bajadas de rafting y kayakistas.

Most of the trails are marked and you don’t necessarily require a guide. El Cañi sanctuary is private and is run by an NGO. Trekking in this sector must be done with local guides. One can arrive to these places by Buses Jac with three daily departures, tourism agencies and by taxi. Depending on the trail, walking speed and terrain slope the time of the tour is variable. You’ll need at least an entire morning for this activity.

Estos tours incluyen traslados, bote, botero, guía, equipamiento completo, limpieza de las piezas obtenidas y un asado a orilla del río para dar término a la actividad. También se puede ir en forma particular de preferencia en vehículo de tracción a otros sectores como la desembocadura del río Plata (desemboca en el Lago Villarrica) o puede probar suerte en el mismo lago Villarrica.

Todo ascenso al volcán debe ser a través de las agencias de turismo, a menos que, se trate de un guía con documentación que acredite que es un experto en la materia y cuya autorización final depende de director de Conaf. La temporada de ascenso comienza a mediados de octubre y se mantiene activa hasta abril, dependiendo exclusivamente del clima. No se requiere tener experiencia ni ser un experto. Por él se llega a un primer refugio donde está el primer andarivel (Juncalillo) y los estacionamientos. Allí existen sectores de suaves lomas donde es posible practicar sin necesidad de pagar andarivel. También es común ver familias enteras deslizándose por las laderas arriba de un trineo o haciendo figuras de nieve.

Along this road one reaches a platform with the first aerial tram (Jucalillo) and the parking lots. There are several sectors of smooth hills where it is possible to practice without paying for the aerial tram. It is also common to see entire families gliding down the slopes on a sledge or making snow figures.

Las caminatas se realizan en medio de coigües, lengas y araucarias y entre sus atractivos adicionales están milenarios cráteres volcánicos y lagunas de cristalinas aguas y su fauna circundante. En este hábitat es posible divisar cóndores, picaflores entre otras aves cuyos trinares acompañan durante toda la travesía. Para los que desean extender la experiencia existe un refugio rústico y tres campamentos habilitados. El paseo tiene un valor de $ 6.000 p.p. incluye un trago de bienvenida. También existe la alternativa de realizar el paseo a bordo de un Catamarán. Este zarpa desde este mismo muelle. ($3.000 p.p) Feria Kui-Kui. Para llegar a esta feria se toma el camino internacional. Se dobla a la izquierda en un camino de ripio señalizado como “Pasarela Quelhue”. Esta Feria se encuentra cruzando la Pasarela. Sólo funciona en enero y febrero y su finalidad es el rescate de la cultura Mapuche. Esta se da a conocer, sin mayores pretensiones, mostrando en forma sencilla lo cotidiano de la costumbre mapuche al día de hoy. Allí podrá ver una “ruka” construida a base de paja y barro, una réplica de cómo era antiguamente la casa de una familia mapuche. Aún son posibles de encontrar en algunos sectores rurales apartados, utilizadas en la actualidad como segunda vivienda. Dentro de la “ruka” se puede tomar “mate”, comer tortillas o sopaipillas, preparadas en el momento. Durante los fines de semana, es posible que tenga suerte en ver torneos de Chueca o Palín (deporte mapuche), que son establecidos en forma espontánea entre las comunidades indígenas del sector. Durante la semana llegan muchos visitantes a solicitar comida típica mapuche que se puede comprar en pequeños puestos muy rústicos y atendidos por vecinos del sector Quelhue.

There you may see a “ruka” built with straw and clay, a replica of what a Mapuche family house used to look like. They are still found in some of the more remote rural sectors, still used to live in. Inside the “ruka” you can drink mate tea and eat tortillas (bread baked in the hearth of the stove) or sopaipillas, freshly made. In that same place, during the weekends there are Chueca or Palin tournaments (Mapuche sport). You may be lucky and see one of these matches, because the tournaments are established spontaneously between the indigenous communities of the sectors. During the week many visitors come and ask for typical Mapuche food, which can be bought in very rustic small stands that are run by neighbors of the Quelhue sector.

tonalidades derivadas del verde que se aprecian por donde se fije la mirada. La exuberante vegetación, ecosistemas forestales y su entorno entregan a los visitantes un atractivo panorama revitalizador y lleno de vida. Cercanos a los asentamientos urbanos se puede observar bosques abiertos donde abundan los coigües, lenga, radal, avellanos, hualles, olivillo, robles, arrayanes (característico por su finos troncos anaranjados) generalmente en estos sectores se encuentra una abundante vegetación como el pangue, enormes helechos, liquen, un musgo que al igual que los helechos se da a la sombra y humedad de estos bosques. También es posible observar el copihue, considerada la flor nacional, que se da como una enredadera de hojas firme y brillante cuyos flor se da en intenso rojo, blanco y rosado, que cuelgan como campanitas de colores entre los bosques. Pero sin duda, la atención se la lleva la alta cordillera con la presencia de bosques milenarios de Araucarias que dominan el paisaje, y no es por su abundante follaje o su colorido, al contrario, más bien destaca por su extraña conformación rígida y de gran altura. Como su crecimiento es tan lento, ya se puede constatar la larga data de su presencia por estos paisajes donde no coloniza ninguna otra especie. Resistente las fuertes ráfagas de viento cordillerano, constantes nevadas en medio de una soledad sólo interrumpida por el vuelo de imponentes cóndores. Hablando de la fauna silvestre asociada, es posible avistar águilas, zorros y pumas, los cuales sólo bajan a sectores poblados cuando el alimento escasea, cazando ovejas y animales menores. En sectores de menor altitud abundan los queltehues (también conocidos como treiles), las bandurrias y patos silvestres que comparten humedales y lagunas junto a coipos y en algunas partes con cisnes de cuello negro. Mas escondidos y difíciles de avistar se encuentran el carpintero macho que se reconoce por el intenso color rojo en su cabeza o carpintero negro que corresponde a la hembra. Es más fácil escucharlos en medio de los bosques junto al bello trinar de zorzales, o el chucao entre muchos otros.

It is also possible to observe copihue or Chilean bell flower--considered the national flower, it grows in a vine of firm and glossy leaves with intense red, white and pink flowers that hang like little colored bells amidst the forests. But without a doubt the attention is won by the high mountain range with the presence of millenary woods of Araucarias that dominate the landscape and it is not for its lush foliage or its colors, on the contrary, it stands out for its odd rigid constitution and height. Because its growth is so slow, it is possible to see the ancestry of its presence in these landscapes not occupied by any other species. Resisting the strong mountain wind, constant snow in a loneliness only interrupted by the flight of impressive Andean condors. Speaking of the associated wild fauna, it is possible to see eagles, foxes, and pumas, which only come down to populated sectors when the food runs scarce, hunting sheep and smaller animals. In sectors that are less high there are many queltehues, or southern lapwings,also known as treiles, the bandurrias and wild duck that share the marshes and lagoons with coipos and in some areas with black necked swans. More hidden away and difficult to find is the male woodpecker that is recognizable for its intense red color on its head or the black woodpecker, which is the female of the species.
