Welcome to Arrival Yachts

Nigel Wales, Managing Director

Arrival Yachts is continually furthering its reputation as one of the most sought-after and successful yacht brokerages in Mallorca, if not Spain. Throughout 2013, the Company’s sales performance again defied present global economic uncertainty and left rival brokers in the shade. Specializing in the competitive 20m+ motoryacht sector, Arrival Yachts’ enviable portfolio of previously owned yachts continues to grow as owners, and even banks, make a beeline for a boutique agency that offers a premium service and, most importantly, delivers results. Arrival Yachts’ Founder and Managing Director, Nigel Wales, comes from a strong marine background. His family was a pioneer in the leisure marine insurance market whilst Nigel grew up sailing and racing yachts in the UK. Nigel gained an honours degree in Naval Architecture which gives him a real edge in terms of his understanding of yacht design and performance. This technical knowledge, coupled with broad experience and natural people skills, helped Nigel to carve out a distinguished career as a leading yacht broker with a number of household name European brokerage houses.

and new continue to entrust him with their yachts and their aspirations.

By way of natural progression Nigel set up his own yacht agency, Arrival Yachts, in 2008. A well-liked and respected member of the leisure marine industry, clients old

Arrival Yachts works on the theory that there is a customer out there somewhere for every yacht - it just takes time, effort and expertise to find them. To this end,

No substitute for knowledge Arrival Yachts is headquartered in Mallorca’s prestigious Puerto Portals. This makes logistical sense as the Island is a key destination for Mediterranean cruising and many of the Company’s larger listings winter here. However, the Company’s focus is continually expanding as clients are increasingly mobile and the internet has created a global forum for connecting boats to buyers.

ARRIVAL YACHTS MAGAZINE

the Company has invested heavily in back-office technology giving rise to a comprehensive database of yachts, owners, buyers and brokers. Each part of the chain is communicated with on a regular basis to ensure that Arrival Yachts has all the latest information and a real feel for the market at any one time. There truly is no substitute for knowledge in this competitive and elite field. Yacht brokerage is not like selling other assets, you really have to know how each vessel performs, the cost of ownership and accurate market values in order to credibly advise a customer. Yachts are major investments as well as emotive decisions and clients can comfortably rely on Arrival Yachts’ expertise to guide them through the entire purchase-owner-sale lifecycle.

Riva 122’ Mythos

Good brokers are good listeners Arrival Yachts works on the premise that good brokers are good listeners and this attribute is essential for client understanding. This quality is combined with professional know-how and market knowledge to give Arrival Yachts the recipe for successful negotiations. This isn’t to say that the role of an intermediary is without its stresses. Brokerage calls for powerful persuasion and delicate diplomacy alongside astute commercial acumen –throw in cultural or linguistic variations and it certainly becomes challenging. Arrival Yachts is able to keep its focus on the deal, attending to the detail, whilst at the same time managing the points of difference.

Customer for life Buyers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are highly experienced yachtsmen who know exactly what they want and simply use Arrival Yachts’ expertise and contacts to find the best deal. Others may be new to the lifestyle and need advice selecting a yacht that suits their specific needs, aspirations and budget. Regardless of their knowledge, all can appreciate certain values that form the core of the Arrival Yachts offering: • straightforward communication • professional advice • attention to detail • efficient administration • strong negotiation • great service that continues well beyond the signing

It generally follows that once Arrival Yachts has earned the trust of a customer, they become a customer for life and invariably call in on a regular basis for advice on everything from berths (Arrival Yachts has a dedicated berth brokerage in the shape of Prime Moorings) to meteorological forecasting. Meanwhile, owners seeking to sell come to Arrival Yachts for its proficiency in marketing yachts and subsequently managing the whole sales transaction. Marketing is a lot more involved than simply producing a listing for a website; it involves a full assessment of the yacht as well as determining where to position it in the marketplace. Advertising and presentation are important, but so is working the network of contacts and brokers. Arrival Yachts prides itself on being one of the most diligent and proactive marketeers in the business and the proof is in the growing number of owners who place their yachts with the Company.

DUBAI

yachting in

Dubai

Exploring the waterways from a city that needs no introduction Report: Rupert Holmes

Dubai needs no introduction as a city. Its 70 malls host the best shopping in the world whilst it has beaches, top class hotels and restaurants to die for. What’s perhaps less well known is that Dubai is becoming an increasingly important and desirable yachting destination, with a concentration of top-level facilities that often far outclasses the best of those to be found in the West.

Seafaring without exception... superyacht to ultra competitive dinghy, yacht & dhow racing

While the pace of development has accelerated over the past ten to 15 years, yachting has been well-established for more than 40 years, and has benefited considerably from the long-standing support of the ruling Rashid Al Maktoum family. The largest of superyachts can be accommodated here, among them Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s 165m (540ft) yacht ‘Dubai’, the third largest in the world. As with the rest of the city, the pace of development of yachting facilities in Dubai is breathtaking and, with an improved economic outlook after a period of unease, we’re sure to see the development of more – and even better – facilities over the next few years. Although the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is part, are often seen as desert states, they also have a long-standing history of seafaring. Dubai, located on the north-eastern coast of the Arabian peninsula, is no exception. Everything from the world’s largest superyachts to ultra competitive dinghy, yacht and dhow racing can now be found here. The latter is just one illustration that, despite the enormous development since oil was found here in the mid-1960s, Dubai still retains much of its rich cultural heritage. The Emiratis have also largely preserved the generous

and warm welcome they have traditionally extended to visitors.

Dubai Creek This inlet running through the city, from the north-east to south-west, is a natural harbour where 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe, led by the Maktoum family, settled in 1833. It soon became a centre for sea trading, thanks in part to the excellent pearl oysters found in the creek, and within 70 years the souk on the Deira side of the inlet had become the largest in the region, with some 350 shops. In the lower reaches of the Creek the shops in the souks still trade, as do many small cargo and passenger vessels that criss-cross the water at frequent intervals. However, today you will also find a firstclass modern marina here, in a tranquil setting upstream of the hustle and bustle of the commercial traffic. The marina has berths for 120 yachts – both sail and power – of up to 165ft (over 50m), along with world class facilities including fine dining and superlative hotels from the likes of Sheraton, Carlton and Marriott. It’s also right next to the famed Dubai Creek Golf Club with its 18 hole championship course. ARRIVAL YACHTS MAGAZINE 7

New Dubai Set in the heart of new Dubai, in the south of the city, one of the most recent marinas to be built is at the iconic Dubai Marina, part of the Jumeirah Palm development of manmade islands that are famed for their waterside skyscrapers and seven star hotels. If proof was needed of the burgeoning popularity of yachting in Dubai you will certainly find it here. Within a short time of opening the 520 berths, primarily for motor yachts, plans were drawn up to extend the capacity to more than 1,000. The complex includes four marinas: East Marina, West Bay Marina, Mall Marina which to watch the glorious sunsets. Mall Marina has 75 berths, directly in front of Dubai Marina Mall, with its restaurants, cafes, cinemas and numerous retail shops. Finally, Club House Marina is at the nautical heart of the development and is home to the Dubai Marina Yacht Club, which has already gained a reputation as one of the region’s most respected private yacht clubs. For yachting enthusiasts, the venue runs a Cruising Club offering members the opportunity to explore regional yachting destinations, as well as a regular series of workshops and seminars. However, members also value the award-winning cuisine, served in both fine-dining and casual restaurants, the lively sports lounge and the exclusive club lounges. and Club House Marina. Each has a very different character and together they are laid out along a newly-built two mile length of canal that runs parallel to the coastline of Dubai. There are two entry points to Dubai Marina, with the spectacular northern one right next to the Palm Jumeirah development. Berths from 8 - 50m are available, with a maximum draught of 4.5m. East and West Bay Marinas flank the central two, with the former the largest of the four characterised by a bustling open-air promenade with a wide choice of restaurants, cafes and other amenities. By contrast, West Bay Marina is in a tranquil residential setting and is a great spot from 8

Seafront Tradition The Dubai International Marine Club is in a prime city centre location, on the coast of the Arabian Gulf opposite Palm Jumeirah. The Club has 300 berths capable of accommodating vessels from just 25ft to superyachts of up to 50m in length, as well as a full service boatyard. It was established in 1988 in Mina Seyahi by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum to safeguardtraditional watersports and promote Dubai both nationally and internationally. On site there’s also a helipad, sailing school, race department and venue facilities – the club hosts more than 50 sailing events

ARRIVAL YACHTS MAGAZINE

each year, including top-level international regattas that attract some of the biggest names in professional yacht racing. The Club also runs a full programme of spectacular racing for a huge fleet of traditional Arab dhows. These are organized in three classes, for boats of 22, 43 and 60ft in length, with hundreds of boats taking part in regular regattas. They are universally maintained in pristine condition, with beautifully polished hulls and sails made of modern material, while retaining the traditions of the past through strict rules intended to maintain the heritage. Don’t be deceived by the traditional appearance of the boats – the racing is ultra competitive and is taken very seriously. Sails are carefully designed using computer modelling and built by some of the most prestigious sail makers in Europe and the USA. Equally, the most successful dhow sailors go on to race in some of the world’s most challenging yacht races, including the Volvo Ocean Race. Further along the seafront, the Pavilion Marina at Jumeirah Beach Hotel is another of the city’s newly-built facilities and was conceived primarily as an exclusive haven for superyachts, offering berths for 100 yachts from 50 - 330ft (approx 15 100m). Here you can be pampered onshore, make use of complementary membership of the sports club to scuba dive, use the gym or simply chill out in unashamed luxury next to the pool.

Climate Control Dubai’s sizzling desert climate means that summers are very hot and humid, with temperatures remaining above 30ºC, even at night. The best time of year to visit is therefore in the winter – in December, January and February, average afternoon temperatures are in the region of 24 to 26ºC. On the downside, winter tends to have more precipitation, although no single month has an average of less than eight hours of sun per day, nor more than an inch of rain during the whole month.

Further Afield There are also opportunities for using Dubai as a base to visit other Gulf states by yacht, including Qatar, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. What could be better than mooring right next to the Grand Prix track? Alternatively, you can follow the coastline of neighbouring Oman, through the Straits of Hormuz to Muscat, and beyond to the Indian Ocean. Once offshore and away from the city, the warm waters of the Gulf are teaming with wildlife, including hundreds of species of fish, cetaceans and turtles.

tax considerations There is a double taxation agreement in place between Spain and the UAE, but to have the benefit of it, there are certain rules which must be followed.

If you were to be employed in Dubai, become a resident in Dubai, and are paid in Dubai, you would (under current laws), pay zero tax on your income. If your dependent family decides to live in Spain whilst you work in Dubai, you would also become a resident in Spain. Residents of Spain must pay tax on their worldwide earnings. However, complying with the terms of the double taxation agreement will allow you to demonstrate that you are a tax payer in Dubai, and a non-resident in Spain for tax purposes. This includes, in particular, spending less than 183 days in Spain per

year, and having the appropriate paper trail such as employment contract, payslips and certificate of fiscal residence. Your family can remain in Spain, although if you decide to buy a property there, you will be subject to (unavoidable) investor tax.

you are thinking of property ownership, it is worth making a full investigation of the market, including the fees involved. The property market in Dubai has grown at an extraordinary rate since mid-2012, and prices are continuing to rise.

If your work means that you do need to be away from Dubai (and out of Spain) for long periods, you will need to enter Dubai every six months to ensure the validity of your visa. When you do go back to Spain for a short visit, it is worth checking the current rules regarding currency. Under current rules, you have to be able to prove the source of cash over €6,000, so you would need your Dubai payslips for this.

Another aspect to consider is that, whilst inheritance tax is not an issue in Dubai, Sharia law governs the inheritance of property. This means that your property, even jointly owned, would not automatically pass to your spouse on death.

Whilst some people decide to buy property in Dubai, it is not a requisite to obtain a visa, and become resident in Dubai. If

In summary, it is possible to work in Dubai, whilst your family live in Spain (or a different country), in a tax efficient manner. However, there are strict rules to be followed, and with the constant change to UAE visa requirements, you should always consult a company experienced in this area. by Vardanis Consulting oilandgas@vardanis.com

From Miami-style hedonism to mellow moonlit romance, we’ve rounded up the best Beach Clubs that the white island of Ibiza has to offer. Report: Sarah Drane Main Image: Nikki Beach, Ibiza

ARRIVAL YACHTS MAGAZINE

Nikki Beach With Ibiza a pioneer of the luxe beach club revolution, it comes as some surprise to learn that the granddaddy of all beach clubs, Nikki Beach, only landed on the Island in 2013. What took Founder Jack Penrod so long? “Ever since we opened our very first Nikki Beach in 1998, one of the most frequently asked questions has been ‘When are you going to open in Ibiza?’”, says Jack. “The truth is, I didn’t want to rush into it. And I didn’t want to do the thing that everyone was expecting me to do either! We waited until we found the perfect place.”

boutique formula that works so well in St Tropez, St Barth, Marbella, Cabo San Lucas, Marrakech, Koh Samui, Mallorca, Phuket and, of course, its birthplace, Miami. Favoured by the ‘have yachts’ rather than the ‘have nots’, the ‘average’ Nikki Beach frequenter isn’t backwards in coming forwards when it comes to spending money. The restaurant focuses on elegantly prepared seafood, sushi and salads (you don’t get to be one of life’s beautiful people by gorging on burgers and pies), while the drinks menu is heavy on champagne and cocktails – the former sprayed F1-style by those who are less rational than they are wealthy.

As expected from Nikki Beach, the entertainment schedule is packed, from the opening White Party through to the closing Red Party, with the resident DJs, eight-inch-heeled dancers and sax-wielding musicians for everything in between. And, don’t be surprised if you spot Mr Clooney, Ms Diaz, Mr Gosling or Mrs KnowlesCarter, for brand Nikki has hosted more celebrities than you can shake your 25,000 euro vintage Cristal at. www.nikkibeach.com/ibiza

And that ‘perfect place’ was deemed to be a relatively quiet location in Santa Eulalia, away from the obvious honeypot resorts of San Antonio, Ibiza Town and Playa d’en Bossa. Now into its second season, Nikki Beach Ibiza serves up the signature cabanasby-the-pool, dining, drinking and fashion

Amante Beach Club Although they’re near neighbours, on the same Santa Eulalia coastline, Amante Beach Club is about as mellow as Nikki Beach is ostentatious. Carved into the side of caramel-coloured cliffs washed by a shimmering cove, its spectacular setting is private, secluded and, above all, impossibly romantic (amante = lover in Spanish). Run by a former-DJ Brit, Amante Beach Club combines a decent sound system with fresh smokey grill-cooked food and soft sunloungers to great effect. Rustically furnished in wood and white canvas, it hosts the original Ibiza crowd, a crowd of all ages, one that is happy to be anonymous even if you’re famous. By day, long lazy simplistic yet flavoursome lunches are followed by an equally long

lazy siesta and sunbathe. By night, the dramatic rocks are illuminated by subtle coloured lighting to create a magical dining destination. When asked his favourite supper spot on the Island, You’re Beautiful crooner and Ibiza resident, James Blunt, said, “Watch the sun go down and then have dinner at Amante Beach Club. Kylie had her album launch party here, so if it’s good enough for her, it’ll be good enough for you”. Indeed the pint-sized popstrel sent forth Aphrodite here back in 2010, in the company of a select guest list of one hundred. Greek goddess of love Aphrodite would certainly have felt at home here, especially had she picked the candlelit ‘Amante Table’ for two. Set far from the madding crowd

in a dainty Balinese hut, you get a specially designed tasting menu and your personal waiter for the night – All The Lovers indeed. You can even get married here - Camilla Dallerup (offa Strictly) chose Amante to tie the knot with Kevin Sacre (offa Hollyoaks) in 2010. Romance isn’t always on the menu at Amante, Tuesdays are for early morning yoga practice followed by a healthy buffet breakfast on the terrace and, new for 2014, Mondays are movie night. Ranking amongst the most atmospheric openair cinemas on the planet, filmgoers can snuggle on oversized beanbags and watch everything from Gravity to Blue Jasmine beside the moonlit sea. www.amanteibiza.com

Ushuaïa From the sublime to the ridiculous and Ushuaïa. Set on Ibiza’s longest stretch of sand, Playa d’en Bossa, (within stumbling distance of the Airport at less than five minutes drive), Ushuaïa rubs shoulders with some of the Island’s coolest beach bars as well as being directly opposite 7,000-capacity super club Space. First opening in 2009 as a BalineseBalearic beach club, with the customary all-white day beds and flickering lanterns, Ushuaïa has now leapt into the major league and become one of the most successful music scenes to open on Ibiza in a generation. Expanding rapidly, the mega venue now has several facets. First up is a feet-in-sand beach club with reservation-only loungers and beds, a fashion boutique and large indoor-outdoor decked restaurant characterised by sturdy wooden tables and shady linen parasols. The menu is distinctly Mediterranean with sushi appetizers, seafood platters,

enormous salads and sharing plates of steak. As the sun falls, this spot becomes a music-filled late-night club by the sea, but this is a comparatively small chilled-out lounge affair, for the real party is happening a few metres away... Launching in 2011, the Ushuaïa Hotel and Pool Club now throws the Island’s biggest and best all-day parties. Open from 10am til midnight, it boasts festival-size poolside capacity, an open-air stage and big name billing. Milling amongst the pink elephants, alabaster mermaids, golden crocodiles, totem pole cats and frog prince (we’ll have some of what the designer’s having), partygoers can throw shapes to the likes of David Guetta, Avicii and Swedish House Mafia until the wee small hours. Think an upmarket Ibiza Rocks where you swap cheap beer and denim hotpants for pricey cocktails and some serious fashionistas. Meanwhile, latest addition, The Ushuaïa Tower, is a luxury hi-tech hotel which

opened in 2013. If it all gets a bit much amongst the bright lights and big beats, nip up to the eighth-storey Mile-High Club and watch the sun set across the rooftops of Ibiza’s charming old town. Even the most ardent clubber needs to take five. www.ushuaiabeachclubrestaurant.com

Nassau Beach Club A 500 metre stroll down Playa d’en Bossa takes you to Nassau Beach Club, a rather more refined affair. Celebrating its seventh anniversary in May this year, the venue is somewhat of a veteran amongst Ibiza’s beach clubs and offers a genuine five star experience. By day, Nassau Beach is the perfect hangout to soak up the sun and sip a cocktail or two with friends, old and new. Lay back in oversized sunloungers or supersized daybeds and enjoy friendly VIP service such that you barely need to move a muscle to tuck into a platter of lobster and a refreshing flute of cava. Or, if the heat is on, the restaurant offers welcome shade, mouth-watering food, a crisp glass or two of white, and relaxing chillout music. The turquoise Mediterranean is always on hand for a cooling dip, or pop to the Nassau Boutique to update your beachwear and accessories or to buy the latest Nassau music cd.

Nassau Beach’s nocturnal personality offers the perfect setting for a romantic dinner in the restaurant or Teppanyaki lounge. Combining science with cooking, the restaurant menu serves up molecular gastronomy-inspired dishes (think Heston Blumenthal, The Fat Duck) resulting in some unconventional yet tantalising contemporary plates. Sommeliers match wines and champagne to accompany. The Teppanyaki lounge is a little more relaxed, focussing on Mediterranean and Asian cuisine, with cocktail connoisseurs on hand to whisk up the perfect complement. Appetites satiated and tables cleared, Nassau Beach Club then becomes a bonafide club with resident DJs spinning deep house until 2am, an amazing preSpace warm-up. Events such as Disco Fever and Passion Night pepper the calendar throughout the season and expect a roadblock to get in as Nassau Beach’s exclusive and loyal clientele show up in their smart cars for a night of carefree class. www.nassaubeachclub.com

Jockey Club Right at Ibiza’s southernmost tip is the beach of Ses Salines, named after the saltpans that flank the dunes on its northern edge. The water is crystal clear, the sand pearly white, and the nearby designated National Park is a haven for nature, and nature lovers. This is the idyllic setting for Jockey Club, one of the Island’s most authentic and cherished hangouts. Opening way back (in Ibiza beach club terms) in 1993, when there was no such thing as a ‘beach club’, Jockey Club retains its original philosophy as “a beach restaurant with the spirit of a chiringuito”. Whilst it has developed to have sunloungers, a cocktail bar, DJs and a shop (not a boutique), Jockey Club still prefers to be called a ‘beach restaurant’ and the owners eschew all the luxury trappings favoured by its young pretenders – i.e. no VIP area and no expensive sunlounger rental. Furthermore, Jockey Club is rather fond of daytime, and opens as early as 9am for breakfast, with the kitchen open overall ‘til 9pm. This gives the venue a reputation for being laidback and child-friendly, if you have offspring in tow, bring them along, they’re more than welcome.

Shore side, Jockey Club has slightly haphazard rows of sunloungers and parasols for hire, just lay your towel down early if you fancy one as they don’t take advance bookings. The friendly team is happy to bring a full restaurant service (including the blackboard of specials) to your lounger. Or try the shakes, sorbets, dishes and juices at the fruit bar to add some vitamin C to your sun-fuelled vitamin D. Expect the background music to be just that, low-key, playing from late afternoon ‘til early evening. Those who love Ibiza call Jockey Club “magic”. Gecko Beach Club Ok, not technically Ibiza, but just 6km to the south, the UNESCO-protected treasure island of Formentera has long lured day trippers and holidaymakers to its crystal clear waters and pristine sands. Since 2010, it boasts another jewel in its treasure chest, Gecko Beach Club. Once a shabby hostel, but now the result of a three-year seven-figure top-to-toe renovation, Gecko Beach Club is the premier spot for discerning visitors with its quality boutique hotel, deep blue swimming pool, restaurant and chill-out bar. Located on Mitjorn Beach on Formentera’s southern coast, Gecko has direct access to 150 metres of stunning beachfront and is the ideal spot for a drink, bite to eat, a massage with the sounds of the sea in your ears, and a relaxing sunbed on the sand.

Daytimes at Gecko Beach Club are all about relaxation, laying on one of the wooden sunbeds in the garden, inhaling the calming sea breeze, sipping on a delicious Bellini cocktail at the chiringuito bar and, when you fancy a refreshing swim, sidestepping into the pool or walking down the green lawn to dive into the deep blue sea just in front of the hotel.

By evening the luxury beach living continues and you can take your pick from an extensive cocktail list inside the minimalistic white bar. ARRIVAL DIARY

Broker’s Diary People often wonder what brokers get up to, especially in the winter months when surely no one is buying boats. This is actually the busiest time for sales activity.

It all kicks off with the intensive Cannes and Monaco Boat Shows in September, where most buyers for larger yachts will start, or restart, their quest to buy. Not all clients will make the boat shows, but they also provide a great forum for networking within the industry. Many yachts will now be back in their home port after a busy summer (or at least be staying in one place for a while) and most crew will still be onboard. 125

By the end of October things tend to slow down a little, with fewer new buyers coming onto the scene. This generally coincides with the start of some serious price reductions which continue into the beginning of the new year. However, a buyer shouldn’t be complacent and wait it out to pick up a bargain. According to 2013/2014 figures, sales were very strong at the end of last season, with 109

During this important selling season, a broker needs to monitor the market and keep buyers and sellers fully informed of prices of relevant vessels. Having this information to hand is key to building a client’s trust. Arrival Yachts scrutinises several daily industry newsletters and, based on experience, the market is most definitely picking up.

Superyacht Sales by Quarter There is no hard and fast rule as to which size of yacht will sell at which time of year, although typically initial interest will be higher in larger yachts (30 to 40 metres plus) immediately the summer season ends, while buyers for smaller yachts (under 30 metres) tend to come to light nearer the end of the year, or the beginning of the following. It’s directly related to how long it will take to prepare the boat for the upcoming season.

When it comes to reaching an agreement between buyer and seller, both will certainly have been watching the market keenly. It once more becomes critical for both parties to have a good relationship with their respective brokers, in order he or she provides them with accurate information and acts transparently in negotiations.

In addition to helping clients sell their yachts, an important part of the Arrival Yachts service is to source yachts. By frequently travelling to inspect vessels on a client’s behalf, valuable time can be saved when it comes to weighing up suitable options. Fitting all of this in, plus transacting several deals a year and producing magazines such as this, leaves very little time in a broker’s diary for anything else.

HECTIC TRAVEL SCHEDULE 2013/2014

Cannes Boat Show - 10 to 15 September – Based on Central Agency Listing - Cantieri di Pisa 145’

Monaco Yacht Show - 25 to 28 September - Based on Central Agency Listing - Cantieri di Pisa 145’

Travel by ferry with the car to Barcelona and then a six-hour drive to Cannes in order to deliver half a dozen two-metre banners and other publicity material for our Central Agency Listing, a Cantieri di Pisa tri-deck, moored off the marina for duration of the Show. Followed an intensive networking campaign (including some tasty meals in the restaurants surrounding the Marina) and a series of viewings. Took the opportunity to do a Waterline magazine drop along the Côte d’Azur.

Direct flight into Nice and then a short train journey to the Bay of Villefranche where the Cantieri di Pisa 145’ is at anchor as ‘base of operations’ for four days. Followed a wonderful daily routine of a morning swim, lunch prepared by the yacht’s chef using local produce, and then a tender ride ashore to catch the train to the Monaco Yacht Show to see yachts on display. Several excellent viewings, including a visit from Fabio Bini, former CEO of Cantieri di Pisa. (Learnt a 150 euro taxi fare lesson not to miss the last Villefranche train out of Monaco)

Gibraltar - 2 to 4 September With no direct services between Spain and Gibraltar, it’s a quick flight to Málaga and an hour’s rental-car-drive down to the border to meet a Sunseeker representative for a handover. After a night onboard the Portofino 53 in Queensway Quay, and full English breakfast on Main Street (it would be rude not to) the official signing of the Protocol of Delivery and Acceptance took place. One happy new owner. Next stop, Algeciras for the ferry to Ceuta and meet an old client, owner of a Fairline Squadron 55, in nearby Marina Smir. Smir is already home to the King of Morocco’s summer palace and the ‘Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Tamuda Bay’ golf resort is on its way - it’s certainly an area for us to keep an eye on.

ECPY Broker Open Day, Nice Port du Commerce - 24 September Athens - 29 to 30 November A great opportunity to host broker viewings onboard the Cantieri di Pisa 145’, moored alongside 25 other yachts ranging between 32 and 62 metres, at the ECPY (European Committee for Professional Yachting) open day. Not only were we able to network with some of the most influential brokers, but it was also a chance to catch up on the latest industry regulations courtesy of ECPY – an association of over 100 corporate members that has been defending the interests of yachting professionals for over 21 years.

In the company of a client’s captain and engineer, a quick round-trip to Athens in order to inspect a Posillipo 95 being offered in part exchange for his much larger superyacht. An enjoyable postnegotiation Greek dinner where we mulled over the prospect.

Rome – 9 to 10 December Conduct a viewing of a bank-repossession Sunseeker Predator 62 (2007) on behalf of buyer from South America. On occasions where it’s too far for the client to travel (transatlantic for example), we can take dozens of photos to show any cracks, stains, wear, damage, and compile a report with the boat’s estimated value, and how it compares in the marketplace. All part of the Arrival Yachts service. Hotel stay in the historic city centre and a quick morning sightsee before the flight back to Palma.

Barcelona - 4 January A daytrip to the Cataloñian capital to view three Ferretti 830s accompanied by a British potential buyer. From years 2006, 2007 and 2008, one light wood interior, two dark wood, and two with hardtops, it was a great way to compare three different models of the same yacht in the same marina – Port Forum. Wonderful early tapas lunch on El Born before the short flight home.

the three-day period, alongside some networking with industry contacts and Waterline magazine distribution. Additional meetings with two German brokerage clients to discuss their ongoing yacht requirements.

Mandelieu-La Napoule, France - 13 to 14 January A brief trip, just a couple of hours, to Mandelieu-La-Napoule, the biggest pleasure port in the Alpes Maritimes. The task was to view a second-hand Princess V62 on behalf of client. Made a full report of its condition, took dozens of photos and assessed how it compared in the marketplace. The yacht was in lovely condition, near-perfect, but not quite...

Formerly operating in the commercial shipbuilding sphere, the yard offers an impressive array of facilities across 100,000m² and has the capacity to build yachts up to 150 metres in length, alongside refit. Set between Viareggio and La Spezia, it’s the shipbuilding heart of Italy, also home to brands such as Codecasa and Overmarine (Mangusta). On the way home, took the train from Pisa to Milan, had lunch in a fashionable city restaurant, and met a potential client. It wasn’t fruitful meeting, but it was an experience...

Cogolin, Antibes, Menton (France), Varazze (Italy) - 24 to 25 March Another western Mediterranean tour from Cogolin in France up to Varazze in Italy, stopping at Antibes and Menton en-route. Hosting two distinct groups of buyers, including some British former powerboat racers, we viewed a selection of Ferretti 680s and 60-foot Princess Yachts. Varazze uncovered a spectacular Ferretti negotiations are ongoing.

Once more on behalf of the buyer from South America, a thorough inspection of a bank-repossession Predator 62 complete with photos, report and market valuation. Stayed in the most bizarrely-decorated hotel ever seen with blood-red crocodileleather walls.

Dusseldorf Boat Show - 22 to 24 January

A viewing trip with a British buyer looking for his very first boat – a 20 metre sports boat. Plenty of in-depth discussions with manufacturers and brokers throughout

ARRIVAL SERVICES

service

The Arrival Yachts When it comes to selling a boat – perhaps to go bigger, more modern, to downsize or simply ‘get out’ – the way you go about achieving that sale depends on several important factors: TIMESCALE: seasonal demand - sell at the end of the season or wait for the new? PRICE: sellers often want to try a higher price to start with and reduce it as the season approaches, based on feedback from potential buyers CONDITION: the quality of maintenance and servicing can make a massive difference LOCATION: proximity to popular cruising grounds and a busy airport are always a plus USAGE: is the boat going to continue to be in use, what about the crew? Not many people have all of these considerations entirely clear at the outset, and of course situations change. Similarly, even some of the most motivated of sellers have a price limit that they choose not to

Open Listing or Central Agency Listing?

go below and will hang on to their boat for another year if necessary. Arrival Yachts is accustomed to discussing these factors with its clients and draws upon extensive experience to advise how best to proceed in order to suit their individual circumstances. With at least 70 boats directly listed at any one time, this is testimony to the confidence that these clients place in the Arrival Yachts service.

Open listing – no exclusivity The easiest way to place a boat on the market through a broker is on an open listing or non-exclusive basis, that is to say more than one broker advertises it. However, remember, easy isn’t always the best. Sellers often take this route as they want to avoid being tied into a contract – possibly a sign that they are not really that serious and could be testing the market to some degree. There are also many brokers out there who promise to have buyers but sellers struggle to place their complete trust in them. It is understandable to believe that by listing your boat with more brokers you’ll gain more exposure to the market. This can be true but when advertising is duplicated to excess, buyers believe that there is more of that particular model on the market than is actually the case. Two other scenarios can also play out. Firstly, some brokers are hesitant to offer a boat that is openly listed for sale in case the client tries to go direct to the owner or through another broker. Secondly, depending on how aggressively they operate, some brokers will compete to sell a boat for the cheapest price by interpreting the owner’s net figure in different ways.

20 ARRIVAL YACHTS MAGAZINE

Brokers need to feel protected in some way for the effort they are going to put in. At Arrival Yachts we strongly advise that the number of brokers is limited to two. An independent broker and a main brand agent are normally sufficient and there is less chance of overlap in efforts.

The Arrival Yachts Central Agency Service – one company, one broker For vessels in the 20 to 40 metre range, a seller should definitely be considering a Central Agency Service. When looking at this larger yacht market, almost all are sold either under a Central Agency or Joint Central Agency basis. The amount of work that can go into marketing and selling a vessel of this size and value becomes too great for a broker not to have some form of security. To this end contracts are generally entered into for a 12 month period and follow the format devised by the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association. It’s essential to check that the broker, the company profile and their chosen advertising media are going to suit the type of vessel you have for sale in order to reach the target market. When the broker understands the seller’s situation, the “important factors” outlined earlier on in the article, and has made a thorough study of the market, they can then go on to actively promote the vessel, talk to potential buyers and provide constant and consistent feedback to the seller. A combination of experience, intelligence and hard work are required to bring a potential buyer and seller together whilst establishing the true value of the vessel and gauging the offers that are received. Confidence Increases in Mallorca Property Market

ECPY Reaches 100 Member Milestone

2013 was the best year for property sales in Mallorca since 2007/8 and the first half of 2014 has seen confidence grow even further.

ECPY (European Committee for Professional Yachting) recently celebrated a significant milestone – welcoming its one hundredth member. The Nice-based non-profit organisation now represents more than 500 employees in the yachting industry.

Whilst Germans top the nationality list for buyers (closely followed by the British, Scandinavians and Swiss) buyers from northern European nations are increasing in number, whilst clients from Russia and Azerbaijan are emerging for the 1 to 1.5 million euro price range. Most activity is in the southwest of the Island, however the west coast towns of Deia and Soller, Pollensa in the north and Cala Ratjada and Cala d’Or in the east, are also popular. It is at the high end of the market where sales have grown the most. Luxury homes in the 3 to 5 million euro price

range are selling fast while many sales have also completed between 5 and 15 million euro. Confidence in the construction industry has led to more interest being generated in new apartment blocks. In St Augustin, the Bendinat Group recently completed a total refurbishment of the old Uto Palace Hotel into 79 luxury apartments, all with stunning sea views and direct sea access and they were sold out within the first six months of marketing. Investor confidence is also growing within the commercial sector with Palma’s Zara building recently selling for 35 million euro.

“Yachting is a serious industry on the French Riviera, the leading destination for yachts throughout the world, and represents more than 6,000 direct jobs locally and 2.7 billion euros in turnover. The need for a place to meet and network is clear, and that is what we offer with ECPY,” says Antoine Perry, Vice President of the Association. “We have a lot to do to make this industry known

It would seem Mallorca’s good fortune is set to continue for the foreseeable future. malcolmandrews@spain.cc

Sunseeker Launches 155 Yacht Sunseeker launched its largest ever motoryacht to date, the Sunseeker 155, at its Poole shipyard in March this year. Proudly owned by F1 supremo Eddie Jordan (his tenth Sunseeker) the 47 metre superyacht is a clear indication of the British manufacturer’s remarkable ambition in a tough market. Hull number one, ‘Blush’, accommodates ten guests in five staterooms including a forward master suite with a private balcony. The upper deck is home to a huge sky lounge perfect for hosting the crème de la crème trackside at the Monaco GP. There is crew accommodation for 11, whilst the galley is equipped to commercial catering standards as this Sunseeker 155

is expected to spend much of her life at charter. Twin MTU 3000hp engines deliver a top speed of over 20 knots and a transatlantic cruising range in the region of 4,500 nautical miles at 12 knots. Quantum’s quiet pack hydraulics run the stabilizer system whilst she also has a set of Sleipner SidePower latest generation electric thrusters at bow and stern. A round-bilge hull guarantees a comfortable passage at sea. Sunseeker has emerged as a big player in the 40 metre plus sector. Undoubtedly the Company’s buyout by powerful Chinese conglomerate, the Dalian Wanda Group, which took a 91.81% stake last June, will have helped the advance.

as just that, an industry, and not simply a billionaire’s dream”. Established more than 21 years ago, ECPY helps to develop the yachting industry and defend the interests of its professionals. By joining the Association, companies have the chance to influence yachting’s evolution, standards and values. Over recent months ECPY has exerted pressure on tax, customs and maritime legislation via lobbying and conferences, and hosted training sessions on issues such as MLC2006. Since 2012 it has also organised networking Open Days – its four events in 2013 gathered together 90 yachts – and further Open Days are scheduled for 25 June and 9 October 2014. www.ecpy.org

THE ITALIAN SEA GROUP - ADMIRAL TECNOMAR & their new shipyard facilities With 12 new (sold) yachts in build, the Group is really going from strength to strength. Furthermore it has recently finalised the purchase of the Nuovi Cantieri Apuania (NCA) shipyard in Carrara, Italy and is in the process of revamping the facilities to create a ‘state of the art’ shipyard and refit hub for vessels between 30 and 150 metres.

26 ARRIVAL YACHTS MAGAZINE

Set at the heart of the Italian shipbuilding coastline, between La Spezia and Viareggio, the NCA yard formerly operated in the commercial shipbuilding sphere and offers an impressive array of facilities. With more than 200 employees, the yard covers an area of 100,000m², plenty of space to fulfil Admiral Tecnomar’s diversification of interests under the banner ‘The Italian Sea Group’.

from the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA), an award presented during the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show for being the most silent yacht in the world by achieving the highest ever scores in RINA’s COMF test. Second, a Show Boats Design Award for best ‘Exterior Design and Styling Award’ in the 40 to 50 metre category, presented at a ceremony held in the spectacular Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Austria.

The Group’s core business plans include: new yacht building, commercial work and of particular interest refit of existing vessels in their impressive new facilities. “Refit is a promising business and a sector in great expansion,” says Chairman of The Italian Sea Group, Giovanni Costantino. “We believe that our strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean could present a critical success factor.”

THE IMPERO 40 metre IN DETAIL

A substantial investment is also going into upgrading the yard’s sheds and office spaces, which will include extensive accommodation suites for prospective owners and their crew during new build and refit projects. A NEW ERA THE ADMIRAL IMPERO 40 ‘CACOS V’ (main photo) The 40-metre ‘Cacos V’ is the first true testament of the new Admiral Tecnomar yard’s focus on quality and innovation. Within six months of her launch, ‘Cacos V’ had already gained two prestigious and internationally-recognised awards. First,

‘Cacos V’ feels like a larger yacht, with her 8 metre beam and a GRT of 475 she has a real presence too. Constructed in aluminium and powered by twin MTU engines she is designed to reach a maximum of 18 knots and cruising comfortably at 16.5. The main deck leads forward into the full width owner’s cabin which incorporates an office space and a further four well-appointed cabins, are found on the lower deck. Design features include ‘zero speed’ stabilisers, the latest audio visual and communications technology, an extended stern beach area, a Spa pool and optimised upper deck spaces designed to offer views of the surrounding waters. Her designer, Luca Dini, has produced a stylish yacht with large and comfortable social areas that are discreetly separate from private areas, giving owners the freedom to choose how they wish to spend their time onboard. Admiral produces a complete range of steel / aluminium semi-displacement and full displacement vessels.

TESTIMONIAL

David. “With an open-top, it has plenty of room for outside entertaining. If you count the forward sunpads, cockpit seating area, main deck saloon, aft sunpads and the hydraulic bathing platform, that’s five openair spaces for people to get together and experience life on the water. A flybridge separates guests, some up top, some below, and that’s not how I want to host a day out. The V62 is a ‘communicative’ boat, it’s perfect. And that’s before you get inside – the amidships master stateroom gives the impression you’re on a much larger boat.”

After ten years chartering, David decided it was high time he stopped lining other owners’ pockets and bought a yacht of his own. But, where do you start when searching for your first ever boat? This successful CEO went to Arrival Yachts, and didn’t regret a thing.

David finishes, “Would I do anything different if I went through this boat search again? The answer is a resounding ‘no’. I had to take my time, study Arrival Yachts’ thorough market surveys, and work out what was right for me. Nigel Wales proved to be a serious partner on the journey. He was rational, more or less impartial, was able to find the right product and negotiate the right deal. He added value to the process, and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with him again.

A Testimonial

I literally had no idea where to begin, which arguably made me vulnerable, so I wanted to select the right partner to join me in this journey of exploration. I chose Nigel Wales of Arrival Yachts to be that partner,” says David. “Having holidayed in Mallorca for 20-odd years, I became familiar with the local brokers, it’s a pretty small-world business on the Island, and Nigel’s name had cropped up several times as a trustworthy go-to guy. It was a good decision.” “With no preconceptions, I tasked Nigel with carrying out a full market survey, assessing the north, south, east and west of the market, motor and sail, 60ft to 90ft,” continues David. “I realise I was casting a broad net, but if you’re parting with six or seven figures-worth of pounds on your first foray into boat ownership, you need to part with them on the right vessel.”

After a three- to four-month search, a search that took David and Nigel on viewing trips to Barcelona and Düsseldorf, with Nigel making plenty of other solo searches throughout Europe on David’s behalf, it soon became clear what the client didn’t want. “Having pored over comparison spreadsheet after comparison spreadsheet, I came to the conclusion that 90ft was just too big, and sail was not for me,” says David. “My mind became set on a sporty day boat, one that was large enough to entertain on, comfortable enough to overnight on, but small enough for me to handle alone without captain or crew. The Princess V62 emerged as the stand-out model to suit my needs.” “A British-built, quality product from Plymouth, the Princess V62 has all the ingredients of a great boat,” explains

46 ARRIVAL YACHTS MAGAZINE

David will be enjoying his new Princess for most weekends throughout the summer, cruising in and around the Islands. And, he’s opted to employ a full-time captain for when full-time entertaining gets in the way of taking the helm – we suspect that could be quite often...
