MID-RISE ELDERLY HOUSING Hung Shui Kiu, Hong Kong | Academic Studio Work | Duration: 4 months
In this studio "Discovering the frontier: Midrise housing in Hong Kong", we investigate the possible redevelopments that could happen in the Hung Shui K iu in thir t y years time. T he site lot where my housing situates on consists two impor tant edges; a rigid linear edge of the highway and the irregular edge of an old village and its informal car park. Before working on design, I investigated on the effects of applying layering facade screens between outdoor and indoor spaces. By combining the given site, housing brief and personal research interest, I created a curva-linear block housing not only fit for typical families in Hong Kong, but also compromises facilities and community center for elderlies.

As the east side of my housing site lot consists a five meters high retaining wall and an elevated highway, I chose to arrange the housing blocks in a diagonal zig-zag strip to retain the indirect sunlight and views that were investigated in earlier iteration studies. On the other side that faces the irregular car park and village, I chose to use a softer curve to wrap around the given site area and attempted to create a dialogue with more existing vegetations around the site. T he massing shown here responds the best out of others as it attempts to create a dialogue with the two main e d g e s a n d s t e p s b a c k f r o m t h e t w o b o u n d i n g n e i g h b o u r s o f t h e s i t e m e a n w h i l e r e t a i n i n g a c o n t i n u o u s fo r m .

There are mainly four unit types in this scheme. All units follow a similar rule with partition or screens that divide different spaces from public to private, service to served, interior to exterior. The first is the single room unit that faces the sports court and farmland shown in the floor plans. These units are large enough for one or two persons to live in. The double room unit offers a larger living room that is applicable for small families. The duplex unit works similarly; it seperates the private bedrooms to the floor above and the living room below. The unit scale explores how the screens defines a programmatic and spatial sequence. From the unit entrance to service space, served spaces and finally to the outdoor balcony that frames the view of greenery.

CANILLAS HOUSING
Canillas, Madrid | Academic Studio Work | Duration: 4 months
The Madrid housing project is set in Canillas. This neighbourhood has a relatively low residential population and a lot of unused land. The elevations on the left depict four streets with very different characteristics. By combining these observations with later analysis of the walking experience and movement in Canillas, the project attempts to combine these four qualities together in the new residential neighbourhood and provide a better planning for pedestrian and cars.

The proposed plan splits the site into four parts corresponding to the four types of 'cities' found during site analysis. The commercial area serves as the main strip that links the public street to the neighbourhood and provides commercial services for the residents. The three types of housing are designed according to user types observed in Canillas. The row house that arrays on the edge are mainly for elderlies with dogs where spaces between house units could be used as walking spaces. The apartment complex aligns with the existing mid-rise residentials and will have units suitable for families with children. The cour tyard houses that lies on each of the abandoned lots will have accessible units for elderlies and wheelchair users.

TOWARDS THE MOUNTAIN: MUNICIPAL SERVICES BUILDING
Quarry Bay, Hong Kong | Academic Studio Work | Duration: 2 months
Enclosed between the dense high-rise residential Monster Building and lush vegetation from Mountain Parker, Quarry Bay Municipal Services Building (MSB) is a long and sleek building that consists typical public services for the neighbourhood. This project investigates the potential for architecture to have a dialogue between the urban and existing natural landscape. Learning from Grafton Architect’s University of Lima in Peru, I employed thick shear walls as the main structure of the building to allow spaces in bet ween to be more accessible to t he outdoor spaces. The ambiguity between indoor and outdoor is further emphasized by the winter and summer courtyards in between the walls .
18
19
I began to investigate types of local flowering plants in Hong Kong that blooms in different seasons and illustrated them with information of colours and height. The plants are later placed seperated in to winter and summer cour tyard to allow the atmosphere of the building to change according to seasons.
20
21
Due to the subtropical climate in Hong Kong, the largest difference is between Summer and Winter. During the Summer Solstice, the sunpath is closer to the Mountain and in the winter, it is closer to the Monster Building. Hence, I separated the building into two blocks, both shifted to allow space for a courtyard that nurtures flowering trees that bloooms in the corresponding seasons. The two blocks serve as a library and a gallery, both holding relatively slow-paced activities, allowing occupants to enjoy their leisure in a space open to nature.

OYSTER FARM AND WORKSHOP
Lau Fau Shan, Hong Kong | International Student Competition | Duration: 2 months In Collaboration with Cai Linlin and Li Yuyang
This project is located on artificially infilled land in Lau Fau Shan, Hong Kong— a site with rich cultural and ecological significance. Historically, the area has transformed, adapting to economic shifts from a 700-year-old oyster farming village to a hub for modern industrial manufacturing and tourism. Our research underscores the project's crucial role as a communal space. It aims not only to function as a working wharf for the nearby seafood market but also as an educational and recreational facility, raising awareness about the natural water-purifying properties of oyster reefs and shells in coastal ecosystems.
24
SITE ANALYSIS: LAU FAU SHAN OYSTER INDUSTRY TIMELINE
The proposal revolves around the entire life cycle of the oyster economy, serving as a catalyst for the area's revitalization after a decline spurred by the departure of younger generations to urban centers. Balancing the needs of local oyster farmers and vendors, villagers, and tourists, the design integrates safe and convenient spaces for farmers to work alongside areas for visitors to engage and learn about Lau Fau Shan’s rich, yet unknown past, emphasizing the significance of the oyster economy in local culture, ecology, and histor y.

WARMING HUT: SNOW STOCKING
Winnipeg, Canada | Competition: Top 20 out of 201 Entries | Duration: 3 weeks In Collaboration with Cai Linlin
Located in Winnipeg Canada, The Fork serves as an ideal skiing destination every year. During January to February, the resort experiences heavy snow fall, lowering the temperature as low as -10 degrees celcius. We designed this snow hut to allow interaction between human and the continuously changing winter landscape. Inspired by Antoni Gaudi's and Frei Otto's structure models, we investigated the change in material form following an accumulating snow load.

Flexible nylon fabric is used to create the curtain and stocking elements in the installation. The stockings and ceiling have openings that would allow accumulation of snow and provide space to hide the core structures to blend into the winter environment. Nylon curtains are applied to block wind meanwhile still blending the outside and inside through its semi-transparent property. To keep visitors warm when seated, sand is used to first form the rounded bottom of the stocking. During different times in winter, the stockings will be in different form status.

CORNER HOUSE: AN ZHEN CASTLE RENOVATION Fujian, China | Academic Studio Work | Duration: 4 months
The setting of this renovation project is in An Zhan Castle, a collective dwelling situated in Fujian, rural China. The Castle was constructued in the early Qing Dynasty by two architects, father and son, to build a place for the Hakka people to defend themselves from the locals. When at its peak, a thousand people could live in this dwelling, with the center offering services and the periphery as living units. Today, the site is conserved as a UNESCO heritage. By working with traditional wooden structure and the four meters thick masonry wall, the project imagines and investigates what kind of contemporary h o u s e co u ld fo r m by j o i n i n g t ra d i t i o n a l a n d m o d e r n l i v i n g to g e t h e r.

CASA GERASSI: MODERN HOUSE STUDY
Sao Paulo, Brazil | Academic Studio Work | Duration: 4 months
This modern house research and analysis project was one of the early projects I did during my studies. The house, Casa Gerassi, was designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha in Brazil. The most interesting design concept is the use of prefabricated concrete components to finish the construction of this house within four days. T h r o u g h o b s e r v i n g a n d a n a lys i n g t h e b u i l d i n g co m p o n e n t s a n d t h e o r d e r o f construction, a series of drawings, models and a short film was made to demonstrate how the prefabricated house offered a new construction system and living style.
