SOMETIMES THE HEAVIEST PART OF YOUR BODY IS YOUR MIND…LET’S LIGHTEN THE LOAD A LITTLE! There has been a recent mindset change in the power of working out—a tipping point one might say. Long revered as the way to get the super-model body one might dream of and then the stress-relieving benefits are only a secondary benefit. Well, physical activity is getting a makeover. Creating a social media firestorm last fall, Lena Dunham stated “it’s about the brain, not the a$$.” Her Instagram quote about what is motivating her to exercise seems to be a sentiment shared by millennials. Can fitness and physical activity be the new Prozac? Going into a new workout routine where the objective is not about losing weight but about alleviating anxiety, stress, and even depression. This mindset change showcases that focusing on what the body is capable of instead of what it looks like (and what you look like getting there) is a great way to overcome imaginary fears of an otherwise “daunting” gym. Sir Isaac Newton was certainly onto something with his three laws of motion. There is such truth in the statement that a body in motion stays in motion. When one is physically active
and comes to know the endorphins and the clearing of the mind that physical activity can bring, it is hard to slow that down or give that up. That being said, taking a week off from the routine can lead into a downward spiral of a body at rest remains at rest.
time, what a different world this might be. If the sole purpose of physical activity is to have fun, be active and make your mind lighter without any other pressures and stigmas of what you look like, the secondary benefits could be monumental.
Let’s marinate on all of that for a moment. If one goes to the gym, not for the reason of what the number on the scale reflects, what the pant size is, what the muscle definition in the t-shirt looks like or what that new gym outfit looks like, but just to feel good or just to push your body that much harder the next
This spring, The Lodge at Woodloch will expand its new Second Chance Recess program to help guests get their toes wet with that concept, and to find an activity that is just fun. Reverting to your inner child and forgetting your worries… even for just 50 minutes. The greatest part is how amazing you feel after the class.

from the
editor When I was a child, my parents set the bar high for what Christmas should be. It was a magical time that had me and my three sisters gathered around Advent candles as my mother read the Christmas story. We struggled to be well behaved while we disagreed as to whose turn it was to hang the ornament on the home-crafted Advent calendar. Tradition was always the theme. Decorations would be hung in their usual place, Christmas Eve services, caroling and trips to the tree farm to select our always-balled-never-cut tree are favorite memories. Along with those, my most cherished are long drives in the dark to let us ooh and ah over the twinkling lights that glowed beautifully through the windows of our station wagon. All these years later, my husband ensures that late-night light tours are still a part of my holiday celebration.

This season we encourage you to embrace your own traditions. Whether it's a trip back in history to Colonial Williamsburg, an urban trek through New York City for dinner, shopping and a show, or a rambunctious family game night that rings in the New Year, traditions make some beautiful memories. Wishing you and yours a beautiful holiday season!

Williamsburg, Va., is a great place to visit any time of the year—my wife and I have experienced the town during all four seasons. Our most recent trip during the holiday season delighted us with an array of holiday splendor, and we may be ready to declare it as the best season for a trip to the Colonial mecca.

Dinner that night was at the Café Provencal, a fine-dining restaurant inside the hotel. My wife started by ordering a glass of the James River White Wine, one of the numerous offerings of the Williamsburg Winery, also located on property (more on that later). I ordered a Hendrick’s Martini, described as “the subtle aromatic of Hendrick’s Gin blended with the elderflower St. Germain liqueur, lime juice, and mint for a refreshing easy-sipping cocktail.” It lived up to its description! For starters, we ordered the Chestnut Soup with apple and cinnamon cream and Manakintowne Mixed Greens (named for the family farm in Powhatan, Va., that supplies the products) with red wine vinaigrette, grapes and almonds. For the main course, I ordered the Braised Beef with Sassafras and Spice, baby carrots, pearl onions, and Yukon gold whipped potatoes. My wife ordered the Atlantic Cod with root vegetables, Brussels sprouts, hen of the woods mushrooms and leek broth, and truffles. For dessert, we shared the Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding with chocolate ganache and vanilla ice cream. Our meal was spectacular; even if you don’t stay the night at the hotel, a meal there is recommended.

Two complimentary tour and tasting tickets to the Williamsburg Winery are included with your stay, and we took advantage the following afternoon. Before doing so, we had lunch at Gabriel Archer Tavern, on the premises of the winery. The restaurant has fantastic views of the vineyard and the menu focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Another good meal was in store for us, which included a Smoked Chicken Panini made with house-brined and smoked chicken, housesmoked bacon, fontina, tomato, baby arugula, and roasted garlic mayo and a Pear, Bacon and Gouda Grilled Cheese, which included pear, house-smoked bacon, and smoked gouda on Billy Bread (another Virginia favorite brand). We also ordered a spiced wine and hot cider to go with our food. Now, it was time for the tour and tasting. The Williamsburg Winery is the largest winery in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The winery showcases eight varieties of grapes planted on 45 acres of the historic Wessex Hundred farm. Tours of the barrel cellar are offered daily and typically last about an hour. Twenty-five wines are produced annually with 40,000 to 60,000 bottles resulting each year. Our tasting included seven varieties, including the James River White which was a nice tropical with hints of pineapple and tangerine. Other samplings included the 2014 Midsummer’s Night White, which tastes like a flower, enhanced by peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, orange and layers of vanilla and honey, and the Jamestown Cellars Settler’s Spiced Wine, a red wine with cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices. It is a great mulled, winter wine that smells like Christmas in a bottle. After our tasting, we decided to take home a bottle of the spiced wine and the 2014 Petit Fleur, a nice dessert wine with flavors of peach, apricot and cherry blossom.

Wedmore Place, a 28-room country hotel located on a secluded 300-acre farm, located just a few minutes from the city, was a wonderful place to start our most recent journey. At check-in, we enjoyed some homemade molasses cookies and upon arrival to our room, a cheese tray with fruit and crackers greeted us. Guest rooms have a European flair, uniquely decorated with antiques and art. Our room evoked the sophistication and style of Provence, with soft yellow-colored walls and imagery of lavender fields throughout. The owners, the Duffeler family, truly welcome you like a member of their family. A special surprise amenity we enjoyed during our stay as was imported lavender and bath salts for the tub.

Of course, no trip to the area would be complete without visiting Colonial Williamsburg itself. This historic area interprets the Colonial and Revolutionary War period, when the town served as the capital of Virginia. More than 400 buildings have either been restored or reconstructed to represent 18th Century Virginia. You can truly spend several days touring the various structures, participating in interactive activities, and enjoying period dining, music and other entertainment during your visit. For example, The Governor’s Palace served as the home for several governors, including Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. The Capitol building houses America’s oldest legislative assembly. The holidays provide an opportunity to partake in a number of special programs, concerts and other activities at Colonial Williamsburg. Walking tours of Christmas decorations and an illumination of the taverns event and even ice skating in the heart of the historic district with musical performances and an opportunity to sip on hot chocolate or cider are all available. Carriage rides, offered throughout the year, take on a different feel during the holiday season.
Another must-visit place is nearby Historic Jamestowne, the site of America’s first permanent English settlement. Operated by the National Park Service, this national park sits along the James River and is an active archeological dig site, offering an array of educational activities for visitors. The island drive is stunning and my favorite place to visit is the Glass House, where you can watch glassblowers at work and even buy some of their products. Adjacent to the historic site sits Jamestown Settlement, which has a reconstructed replica of the 17th Century James Fort. Three ships, the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery, that sailed to Virginia in 1607 to establish the permanent English colony are all replicated onsite. Also on the premises is an example of a Powhatan Indian Village, which interprets the culture of original inhabitants. A fabulous museum tells the story from pre-European interaction, with more than 500 artifacts ranging from documents and portraits to furnishings and tools, to the 17th and 18th Century. Extra programming that explores holiday traditions and music of the period is added during this time of year.

One of the concerts we attended was “Music of the Season with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison,” during which patrons joined Jefferson
and Madison as they shared some of their favorite musical selections and recounted happy tales of their long friendship.

Another thing you can do in the Williamsburg area is visit any number of James River plantations. One of my favorites is the Shirley Plantation, advertised as America’s oldest. It is still lived in by descendants of the original occupants (currently the 11th generation of the Carter family calls it home). The main living quarters is called the “Great House,” and has several original family furnishings and portraits. The property has quite a history, including a connection to George Washington and the War of 1812, wounded Union soldiers were treated there during the Civil War, and a gorgeous 375-year-old Willow Oak Tree sits along the riverbank. After a guided tour of the house, you can explore the other buildings on the property at your leisure, include the kitchen, laundry room, store house, ice house and stable.
If you’d like to take in some arts and culture during your trip to Williamsburg, I would recommend the Muscarelle Museum of Art, part of the College of William and Mary. Its collection can be traced to 1732 and now includes 5,000 works of art, encompassing a diverse group of objects, from antiquity to the modern. Last year, we caught an exhibit that showcased the largest private collection of Florentine Baroque art in the United States and saw nearly two dozen Florentine paintings and sculptures from after the Renaissance. For the ultimate in relaxation in Williamsburg, I must recommend the Williamsburg Salt Spa, which was the first of its kind on the East Coast. Opened in 2008, it is patterned after the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland, the largest one in the world. Salt caves are very popular in Poland and report to be extremely good for respiratory issues, skin and the immune system. The Williamsburg Salt Spa has 15 tons of Polish and Himalayan salt (which has the highest mineral content) and the typical therapeutic session lasts about 45 minutes. After a brief visit to the waiting room, you experience true serendipity while sitting or laying in their recliners while listening to soothing music in a relaxing atmosphere. In addition, the spa offers massages and float tanks. The Greater Williamsburg area is a favorite destination of many, during the holidays or any time of year. It has something for every member of the family, including history and educational opportunities, interactive and engaging fun recreational activities, food, arts and culture, and is a short distance to the beach.

Though I love amusement parks any time of the year, Busch Gardens, one of the most beautiful theme parks I have visited, comes to life during the holidays as it is transformed into Christmas Town. Enjoy more than 8 million twinkling lights, holiday dining, shopping and entertainment. Be sure to take the train ride through the various sections and make a stop at Holiday Hills and the North Pole. Busch Gardens is divided into European sections and my favorite one is Oktoberfest. There, you can check out the 50-foot Christmas tree whose lights dance to your favorite holiday songs. You can also stop by the Mistletoe Marketplace, based on a traditional outdoor German market, where you can find unique handmade gifts from visiting artisans. And if you really want to get into the festive spirit, purchase and drink some Glühwein, a mulled wine served in a souvenir mug.

Inspired by the mythical food of the gods, Ambrosia, by Corbett Lighting, is a plentiful and refreshing visual statement piece that brings vitality and energy to its surroundings. Textured round discs in various diameters are finished in gold and silver leaf. These shimmering elements mix with sparkling clear crystal discs, which rain down in a cascading formation from its tiered frame. The solid iron rings are finished in hand-applied gold leaf which add dimension and create movement. The inner polished stainless steel stem and cluster reflect light and add even more glimmer to the mystic design. Upon the celebration of a milestone birthday, I decided to make a list of commitments for myself. Over the next year I would send 50 hand-written letters, experience 50 new things, and perform more random acts of kindness. Not surprisingly, the pledge with which I've made the most progress is my endeavour to sample 50 new US artisan chocolates. A gift from my sister of nearly a dozen of the most beautifully

batches using Vermont maple-wood paddles and stirred in copper kettles over an open flame. The company's dedication to quality ingredients and small batch production helps to create an awardwinning and delightfully delicious confection.

TRADITION IN THE HEART OF NEW YORK CITY B Y P E G G Y S I J I S W E R DA
No matter what season of the year, New York City is a popular travel destination, but from Thanksgiving through New Year’s, the city that never sleeps attracts 5 million-plus visitors. Seeking holiday cheer, they flood department stores, attend Christmas shows, dine in stellar restaurants, and enjoy the excitement of the season. There’s no place like New York for the holidays.

When my husband and I were dating, Peter flew over from Europe to meet me in New York just before Christmas. Snow covered the sidewalks and chilly winds blew through the alleyways, but we were young and in love, so we barely noticed the cold. During our brief stay, we saw only a fraction of this dynamic city and left wanting more. Since then, we’ve returned to the Big Apple many times, sometimes just us two, other times with kids in tow, and once on a multi-generational trip with Peter’s mom and sister. Every time New York reveals a new side, and we fall more in love with this teeming metropolis. But seeing the city for the first time many Decembers ago, all dressed up for the holidays, holds a special place in our hearts. Whether you are a frequent NYC visitor or have never been, here are a few reasons why the holidays are the very best time to discover a New York state of mind.
ACTIVITIES & SHOPPING
Kicking off this magical season is Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where larger-than-life balloons and floats capture the imagination of those who line the streets. Sure, you can watch it on TV, but you’ll never forget the thrill of seeing it live. Bring the kids and watch their eyes glow with delight as their favorite characters float by. Perhaps you’ll even find a Pokémon in the parade. TIP: Arrive early, dress in layers, and bring a thermos of hot chocolate. Anther iconic holiday activity in New York is ice skating. Besides the rink at Rockefeller Center— also home to a variety of stores, restaurants, and a towering Christmas tree, check out Winter Village at Bryant Park, where you can skate as well as shop at the European-inspired open-air market. Other holiday markets can be found at Union Square, Columbus Circle, and Grand Central Station. TIP: Plan your outings midweek as weekends can be crowded. EASTERN HOME & TRAVEL

What is it about toy trains that awakens the child inside each of us? New York Botanical Garden’s Annual Holiday Train Show showcases 150 New York landmarks connected by a half mile of track upon which G-scale locomotives hum along, chugging and tooting. TIP: Reservations highly recommended. Heading to Fifth Avenue to shop? Don’t miss the dazzling holiday window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co., Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s. TIP: Don’t forget your credit cards. SHOWS & CONCERTS
Another New York holiday tradition is the Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. Creative choreography, colorful costumes, festive stage sets, and big smiles mesmerize the audience, but hearing your favorite Christmas music as the Rockettes sing and dance their way into your hearts is the best part. TIP: Buy your tickets in advance for best seats.

Even though we’d visited New York multiple times, Peter and I had never attended a Broadway show until recently when we saw “An American in Paris”
at the Palace Theatre. “I get it now,” Peter said as the curtain descended on this wonderfully romantic musical. “The quality of the acting, singing, and dancing is over the top.” Then there’s the historic theatre’s sumptuous décor and gilded stage, where stars like Judy Garland, Bette Midler, and Jerry Lewis have performed. “A Broadway show is a must-see!” said my not-usually-so-enthusiastic husband. TIP: Scout out the shows online before your visit.

With gas prices so low, you may be tempted to drive to New York, but don’t bring your car into the city. Traffic can be crazy, and parking is expensive. On our recent visit, we parked our car at a Newark Airport hotel for a nominal daily charge and hopped on a train to the World Trade Center. Once there we opted for a 7-day Metro pass ($31 pp) and took a bus or subway everywhere we needed to go. It was a breeze. mta.info
If you plan to see some of New York’s tourist attractions during your holiday visit, consider purchasing the NY City Pass, which saves you a bundle and includes admission to popular attractions like the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Empire State Building Experience, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, among others. THE GIFT OF LIVE THEATER
“Waitress” is a new American musical currently on Broadway. With music and lyrics by five-time Grammy Award nominee Sara Bareilles, it has received critical acclaim as the first Broadway musical in history to feature four women in the essential creative team roles. Caught in a loveless marriage, main character Jenna must find the courage to pursue both her dreams and new love, as her friends serve up recipes for happiness. Two-time Oscar winner and Academy Award winner for his role in The Godfather: Part II, Robert De Niro will co-direct “A Bronx Tale,” set to open December 1. A streetwise musical set in The Bronx in the 1960s, it will feature a doo-wop score and weave the tale of a son caught between the father he loves and the mob boss he’d love to be. Meanwhile, “Dear Evan Hansen” will tell the story of an isolated teen with social anxiety who creates a fake friendship with a deceased classmate to foster a connection with the grieving family. The production will open for Broadway previews
November 14 and has been called “a new story for the digital age.” “Performances of Holiday Inn: The New Irving Berlin Musical” began in September, as a part of Roundabout Theater Company’s 2016–2017 season. The musical will feature more than 20 classic songs from the Irving Berlin catalogue including “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” It centers on a farmhouse turned Inn in Connecticut, where new associates and friends Jim and Linda put on performances at each holiday. This is disrupted when an outsider discovers Linda’s talent and attempts to steal her away to be his Hollywood dance partner. Last but not least, blazing into Broadway’s Imperial Theater will be “Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812.” Created by Dave Malloy, “The Great Comet” is an adaptation of a 70-page excerpt from Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”. Set in Moscow, with a set that places audience members just inches from the action, the epic tale of romance and passion will star Josh Groban in his Broadway debut.

FAMILY BORED?
TRY SOME FAMILY BOARD(GAMES) BY CHARITY BETH LONG
As the fall season wanes and winter descends, days grow shorter and party lists grow longer. Some holiday gatherings will be quietly intimate and others will bulge and bop with unfamiliar guests. Large or small, there is a place in every gathering for a game. Long before we had cell phones to aide wallflower tendencies, party hosts would lead guests in spirited play in the parlor. It brings to mind the scene in A Christmas Carol where Scrooge looks in on his nephew’s holiday party as they play Blind Man’s Buff. Topper, obviously cheating, goes, “after that plump sister…tumbling over the chairs, bumping against the piano, smothering himself among the curtains, wherever she went, there went he…when at last, he caught her; when, in spite of all her silken rustlings, and her rapid flutterings past him, he got her into a corner whence there was no escape”. Even Scrooge is amused by the gaiety the game produces and his change of heart shows.

Victorians used games as ice breakers, to spur conversation and entertain guests. Gaming was certainly not a new concept, but Victorians, who had more leisure time than previous eras, took the pastime to a new level of frivolity. The tradition survives today. You’re probably familiar with Charades or Fictionary, but might know them better as Cranium and Balderdash. Names have been changed, rules rewritten, but many parlor games are alive and well despite an abundance of electronic media. And the reason why is obvious: they lighten the spirit and bring people closer together. My husband and I have always loved playing games, board, card, really any kind, so it was no surprise when we were given a book called “After Dinner Games” as a present. This title by Jenny Lynch contains 40 vintage party games that span from tame word play to rowdy competitions. Upon first read, I knew the games were winners, so when we were invited to a cabin retreat with friends, we took the book along. After all, a few days deep in the woods, housed in a rustic cottage with no television requires entertainment. Thanks to this little book of games, it was a pee your pants funny type of getaway. The culmination of the hilarity was thanks to two games: Are You There, Moriarty? and Squeak, Piggy, Squeak. The first game involves blindfolding two participants, arming each with a rolled up newspaper and positioning the participants supine on the floor. They then take turns asking, “Are you there, Moriarty?” to which the other participant must answer. The goal is to be the first one to whack the other player. So hopefully you’ve cleared the room of valuables, because the contestants roll about while trying to thrash one another! And it’s just as much fun to watch as it is to play.
In the second game, party goers sit in chairs placed in a circle while one blindfolded player is spun about in the center with a pillow. The dizzy player then ambles towards a seated person, places the pillow on their lap, gently sits down and says “Squeak, Piggy, Squeak”. The seated person must squeak and the blindfolded challenger must guess who the squeaker is. Usually, the person being commanded to squeak is laughing so hard they are already snorting like a pig. If this sounds like a party you’d like to throw, you’re in luck. Lynch’s book is available through online sellers, though it appears to be out of print. An internet search will readily turn up loads of parlor games for your amusement, but don’t stop there because board games are enjoying a resurgence…and no, I’m not talking about Monopoly or Life. You can find loads of new board games that are innovative and challenging while also being fun to play. Carcassonne, a tile-based game in which you build a medieval settlement, has become one of our favorites. The rules are easy to learn and the objectives are simple: earn the most points by building roads, cities, cloisters and farms. Another favorite is Trans America, a railroad game in which players compete to be the first to connect five cities across a map of the United States. Game play is fast and the rules are simple, making it great for older children to adults. I would love to introduce you to all of our favorites, from For Sale to Splendor, but there are so many awesome card and board games that it would take a dissertation. So instead, I will tell you about some resources for learning, acquiring and playing new games.

The first place to go is your local game store. These are specialty stores at which employees are well versed in the games they sell, usually hundreds of games. You can tell them what type of games you enjoy playing and they will help you find a game you’ll love. It might sound simple, but there’s a wide variety of mechanics to consider: while one person prefers a game like Forbidden Island that involves cooperative play, another likes a worker placement scheme such as Agricola. With about 50 styles of game play to choose from, you’ll be glad to have some expert advice!
Another way to learn a new game is to go to a game café. This is a fairly new concept, but the need for offline connection is spurring the trend. There’s a fun place in College Park, Md., called The Board and Brew, where they serve up wine, beer, casual food and of course, games! For a minimal fee you can play as many games as you want for the day and they will teach you how to play them, too. It’s an excellent way to try before you buy as well as a casual way to hang out with friends. If you live in an area without specialty game stores and cafes, don’t despair. The internet’s got you covered. You can buy just about anything online now and you can learn how to play games online, too. There are game podcasts, YouTube game channels and even an online game show hosted by Wil Wheaton! (Yes, Wil and his band of geeky actor friends will introduce you to a new game each week in his show TableTop. The web series has spawned the “Wheaton Effect,” causing games to rise in popularity or sell out after they have been featured on the show.)
My favorite game store is the Family Game Store located in the Historic Savage Mill in Maryland. Employees are friendly, helpful and have introduced me to many fun games. What’s my game criteria? I like games that take an hour or less to play. A favorite pick from Family Game Store is 7 Wonders, a card development game in which you build trade routes, military power, scientific discoveries and civic buildings to develop an ancient civilization. The hubby (who is a more serious gamer than me) has a different fave: Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn, Va. He frequently attends game nights at this location where they have competitions for X-wing and other miniature games. This store may be a little intimidating to the non-game geek, but the good news is they have opened a second store called Huzzah, Jr. for families.
Why so much excitement about games? They make you laugh! So, encourage your friends and family to do the “phone stack” and trade online time for real-world fun. Adding some vintage fun to your next party with games that will make the season memorable.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR SUCCESS: • Know your audience. Choose games that are age appropriate for the whole party to play together.
56
EASTERN HOME & TRAVEL
• Have basic game supplies handy. This includes pencils, paper, dice, a dictionary and a deck of cards.
•
Board games tend to have limitations on numbers, so if you are expecting a crowd, breaking into smaller groups is advisable.
•
If you want to serve snacks and cocktails while playing games, provide appetizer plates and lots of napkins. This will keep guests from accidently dropping food on the game board.

ALL ABOARD! Visiting magical model train displays has become a treasured tradition for many families. Visitors, both young and old, delight in the whimsical villages fashioned in miniature. The creators of these winter wonderlands frequently revel in recreating the cities and landmarks that they hold dear. How these highly detailed, tiny towns happen

and the motivation to create them is as varied as the towns and cities they represent.
The time sensitive transformation was a huge success and now, for the sixth year, the Groff family continues their annual tradition of decorating the tiny homes and businesses along the tracks to share their holiday spirit with visitors. The process starts each year in October when Tom and Linda scour the aisles of craft stores for new stickers, embellishments, strands of beads, and any miniature Christmas decorations that meet Tom’s approval. Linda and Kristi take charge of trimming the layout with the collection of new and old items, while Tom wires lighted signs, trees and strands of tiny Christmas lights. overhead and a dusting of snow coats the display as a finishing touch. A customer favorite is the “Santa Search”: Linda and Kristi triple-count and hide a miniature Santa for each year that the Choo Choo Barn has been open. This year, visitors can hunt for 55 jolly St Nicks throughout the winter landscape, which includes 150 hand-built animations and 22 moving trains. In keeping with an old family tradition, Tom decorates the miniature version of his childhood home in Strasburg with a unique tree through the roof. “People from town anticipated the tree each year. We placed half of a Christmas tree in our picture window and the other half on our roof. It was a great illusion!” Tom explains. Decorating the layout for Christmas has become a part of the Groff family’s busy holiday season. “I had always toyed with the idea and now it’s a reality. Kids and adults alike get really excited to find all the Santas—it’s fun to watch them count as they tour the display. Plus, it helps them notice what they may have missed in the past. They develop a new appreciation for the detail of the layout”, says Tom. The Groffs look forward to unveiling this year’s Christmas layout to the public the day after Thanksgiving.

When searching for an idea to make the 50th anniversary of Strasburg, Pa.'s Choo Choo Barn “extra special,” owner Tom Groff suggested decorating his 1,700 square foot model train layout for Christmas. The idea was met with blank stares from his wife Linda and daughter, Kristi Largoza. It was a bold undertaking with a year to prepare but only a small window of time to actually decorate. The decision was made to close the day before Thanksgiving, giving the Groff family just two days to accomplish their goal of transforming the gigantic model train display into a magical, miniature winter wonderland.

The Garden Railroad display at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a trip through some of Pittsburgh’s greatest moments in history. In celebration of Pittsburgh’s Bicentennial, the miniature train in the popular Garden Railroad display chugs through 200 years of Pittsburgh inventions, firsts and claims to fame—from the opening of the H.J. Heinz Factory in 1869 to the relaunching of the Point State Park fountain in 2013. The South Conservatory envelops you in exhibits that depict 10 living snapshots of different time periods in Yinzer (that's Pittsburghese) history, including miniature plants that set the stage for each scenario and five interactive stations to engage you. Visitors can turn a hand crank to elevate the Duquesne Incline, or push a button to send Three Rivers Stadium into raucous applause and illumination as the Buccos play ball. The Garden Railroad display runs through Sun., March 5, 2017.
Immerse yourself in the sights, smells, and sounds of the season and see thousands of blooms from exotic orchids to a showcase of heirloom and newly developed poinsettia varieties. In this year’s model train show, the trains will chug around, below, through, and above plant-based recreations of iconic national parks and historic places. See the Grand Canyon, Old Faithful Inn, the Gateway Arch, Mount Vernon, the Statue of Liberty, and many more. Visiting one of these, or any of the other festive model train exhibits along the East Coast, will not only spread holiday cheer, it may just inspire visitors to go home and dig out that old Lionel train set and create some holiday magic of their own.
