GRAVEL & GRIND

Frederick coffee lovers rejoice! An old favorite is back in town again.

The artisan coffee bar Gravel & Grind, famous for its mantra of “slow bikes and slow coffee,” has relocated to 6th Street, after a few years’ hiatus.

The new space took several months to build out, but customers say it’s been worth the wait. It’s larger than their former shop, allowing for more customers to relax inside on comfy chairs or get some work done at a long, tall countertop near windows overlooking busy 6th Street.

On the “gravel” side of things, the shop offers up new and used bikes, “but only ones that get our specific seal of approval.” Specifically, ones made out of steel, “the best and strongest frame material.” Bikes sold here have “simple shifters, tires for suspension, and smart, durable and classic bike builds.”

Brooklyn bikes in a variety of colors and builds, including town, commuter and fitness are currently in stock, as are some biking accessories, with more planned soon. On the “grind” side, these folks believe good coffee takes time to make, and they’ve searched and sampled beans from lots of roasters, settling on ChocoSombra, a direct trade coffee roasted in Frederick. The pour-over bar with single origin coffee offerings and hot or iced espresso drinks has been busy since mid-October’s soft opening. Grand opening and a more regular schedule are planned for late October.

To go along with your coffee, artisan toasts topped with avocado, radish, greens and scallions or goat cheese and jam, are ready every day, as are other items such as pumpkin-pecan bread and vegan roasted red pepper or butternut squash soup. On the weekends, Gravel & Grind’s famous waffles will be served up for hungry customers.
