Message from the Consul General Hon. Claro S. Cristobal Consul General Philippine Consulate General Hong Kong SAR

Dear Friends, It is with a sincere and grateful heart that I convey to the Philippine Association of Hong Kong my warmest greetings on this 112th anniversary of Philippine Independence. The past year has seen mlilestones in our commemoration of Philippine Independence Day. Our efforts to make our celebration more inclusive of the greater Hong Kong community have been met with unprecedented success. Our Independence Day celebrations this year in Victoria Park - yet the grandest and most ambitious that our community has mounted, all under the banner of “Hou Yeh, Pinoy” - will serve to culminate our months of hard work in promoting Philippines and the Filipino people in Hong Kong. Since its inception, PAHK has been at the forefront of community efforts to promote the Philippines through its various charitable initiatives. In the recent months, it has again affirmed its commitment towards this goal by helping spearhead the groundbreaking work in “Hou Yeh, Pinoy.” I wish to salute the officers and members of the PAHK for their unrelenting commitment, tireless labor and vast creativity, underpinned by the values of teamwork, mutual respect and unwavering patnotism, in realizing the vision of an empowered, esteemed and greatly valued Filipino community in Hong Kong. May you continue to serve as an inspiration to all you serve, and to bring honor to the country and people that you represent. Mabuhay ang PAHK!

Message from the Chairman Joel C. Almeda PAHK Chairman 2010 Asia-Pacific Head, BDO Remit Ltd.

June 12, 2010 is another year to commemorate our Phil. Independence day from the bondage of America. This kind of achievement bestowed on us signifies that the Filipinos can now stand on its own, can be independent in the administration of its governance. As chairman of our association in Hong Kong, I endeavor to encourage my co-Filipinos that even while we are far away from our beloved country, the Philippines, the sense of nationalism should still be within us. Let us stand upright that even we are away from our own country, we are here to work with pride as Filipinos. This gesture as Filipino citizens symbolizes our innate love of country. It is heartening to emphasize that we Filipinos in Hong Kong, show our awareness to commemorate this special event for our country Independence Day. My friends, my co-Filipinos here in Hong Kong, once more, let us work for the good name of our country - The Philippines, for its successful progress of development. Mabuhay tayong lahat! Salamat po.

Message from the Vice- Chairman Jhell Palomaria PAHK Vice-Chairman 2010 General Manager Gourmet Burger Union, Genesis Group

We are one with you in celebrating our 112th Independence Day. In Hong Kong, we celebrate it in style and in tradition, with a purpose. We are now in a modern age wherein you do not have to be strong and brave to serve your fellowmen. It’s been said and heard by many that each of us is a hero on our own. We as officers and the rest of the members of the Philippine Association of Hong Kong have served and will continue serving our fellowmen through hosting events that will benefit charities and strengthen camaraderie. Let us all take the responsibility to lead by example and keep our desire to achieve the goals of PAHK for many years to come. Then again, we cannot do it on our own. We need you. We need your support and cooperation. I believe it’s our 49th year as an association. Together, let’s keep the spirit of PAHK alive and let’s continue to celebrate our independence as one, wherever we may be. God bless us all.

PAHK, History in the Making ll began in 1961 here in Hong Kong, a British colony back then, when a group of Filipinos, prodded by the Consulate General, organized the Philippine Hong Kong Association. At the time there were only about 200 Filipinos in Hong Kong, and, and their main concern then was to seek moral and social support from each other. It was then that a yearly tradition was established: The Philippine Independence Day Ball. Soon, what began as an organization for socializing underwent a change that reflected the social and political turmoil back home in the Philippines. In the early 70’s, Filipinos flocked to Hong Kong, not just an economic adventure but as political refugees escaping the repression of the Martial Law regime. The Association weaned itself from the Consulate, and took on a more activist stance and expanded its mandate to social and charitable activities.

Such representation also reflected on the projects that the association took on the years advanced. Organizing the yearly Philippine Independence Day Ball continued, but the Association also involved itself in charity. Among the beneficiaries of the Association donations was the IPIL Foundation, which provides educational opportunities for poor but deserving children of Ipil, Zamboanga del Sur, one of the hotbeds of the Muslim secession movement in Mindanao. It also helped put up the Hong Kong Bayanihan Trust, a charity organization that provides facilities for skills upgrading and recreation to Overseas Filipino Workers.

Now as an incorporated organization here in Hong Kong S.A.R., the Philippine Association of Hong Kong (PAHK) serves as a forum not only for Filipinos living in Hong Kong but also for those of other nationalities who have a particular affinity to the Philippines. Its goals are to promote friendship, fellowship and understanding among members; to provide a forum for the exchange of business, professional and employment information; to engage in social, cultural and civic activities for and behalf of the Filipino community; and to participate in the promotion of Philippine trade, investment and tourism.

The economic boom of the 80’s in Hong Kong and the territory’s concern over the Hand Over saw the Association taking on another role, as a de facto Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry dedicated to promoting business, trade and tourism in the Philippines. Along the way, the membership of the association has also changed. When it began, it was composed of the few Filipino expatriates who happened to be on Hong Kong, mostly executives of multinational companies. Today, the Association membership includes people from all walks of life and nationalities.

Kuh Ledesma IN DESCRIBING THE CAREER OF KUH LEDESMA, three words instantly come to mind. ENDURING, for she has proven through over 30 years in show business, that a female singer can grow from ingenue to a woman and still maintain an exciting image, INNOVATIVE, for her career has been marked by a constant series of growths and changes. RARE, and that description needs no explanation to those who have followed through over 30 years of performances, the unique quality of Kuh’s most valuable instrument, a voice that is hers and hers alone, complemented with incredible passion, intelligence, beauty and individuality. All combined, these qualities have made hers a “career de force.” Kuh Ledesma. A dazzling performing ability. Incomparable star presence. Lasting contribution to a nation’s cultural achive. A genius to create concepts and intiate trends. By any reasonable standard, Kuh Ledesma has established herself as the Philippines’ most important female pop act today, hailed by all as the country’s undisputed and original “pop diva”. She has triumphantly conquered recording, the concert stage, television, advertising, and musical production, is a byword among the elite and the mass public alike, and with her customary brilliance and sophistication, sets styles in whatever area she chooses to go into. She is truly the Philippine’s pride. KUH LEDESMA ROCKS!

Unstoppable

An all-Filipino band composed of 6 talented individuals, which were as follows: OINKY PANGANIBAN (vocals), NICOLE SAMONTE (vocals), ROCKY PEREZ (bass guitar), CRIS ZULUETA (lead guitar), PIN ZULUETA (drums) and JOEY NUGUID (keyboards). The group was formed in 2001 in the Philippines and performed in key areas around Metro Manila until a chance came that they were offered to play in Hong Kong and they accepted. They flew to Hong Kong on May 15, 2002 and since then, they've been working and living permanently in Hong Kong. The band's repretoire is rather ecclectic, ranging from alternative, classic rock, 70s and 80s retro, soul...to rock ballads, glam and contemporary songs that people would love to hear, dance and sing-along with. The band's style and brand of tunes appeal to a wide range of audience, from the young at heart to the young people of today's generation! A must-see act that will sure make it all worth while... Ladies and gentlemen, the band...Unstoppable!

Gawad Kalinga A Vision Beyond Charity by: Ria P. Ancheta-Adrias

Most people would say that Gawad Kalinga is an organization solely dedicated to building and giving away houses. However, GK Founder Tony Meloto would disagree. On his first visit to Hong Kong in April 2010, Tony Meloto gave us an inside look at GK’s work and its vision. From a small initiative in 1995 to rehabilitate 127 juvenile delinquents in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City to a global-reaching organization with beneficiary communities all over the Philippines, Gawad Kalinga has redefined the meaning of charity and corporate social responsibility. GK’s vision is simple: to end poverty for 5 million poor Filipino families by 2024. Tony Meloto believes that a poor and hungry man becomes an angry and desperate man. By providing sturdy and beautiful houses in sustainable communities, human dignity is restored. A man with a home to call his own is uplifted and empowered. Traditional charity usually ends when the bank clears the check. However, Gawad Kalinga encourages donors to go beyond charity. They are enjoined to go to their sponsored communities and see first-hand the faces of the people they are helping. Donors work sideby-side with the community to build houses; and as corporate donors give their time so should the people that are being helped. GK calls this “sweat equity”. GK reinforces the idea of renewing human dignity and empowering the individual by having him take part in building his home. Individuals from corporate donors often develop relationships with the communities and spend some of their free time volunteering in the community they helped build. In 2009, PAHK designated Gawad Kalinga as one of its beneficiaries, donating two houses to a GK community in Bulacan. And like all donors, members of the PAHK Board of Directors participated in a house-building activity with the people in the community. This year, GK has once again been chosen as PAHK’s beneficiary. Gawad Kalinga has a clear vision of what it wants to achieve and how it wants to get there. Through collaboration with the private sector and by partnering with the people in their communities, GK has not only helped the lives of the poor but has created a culture of sharing and generosity. By establishing a bond between givers and receivers, GK not only provides houses, it is also on its way to building a stronger, more caring nation.
