The Iron Fist of the Iron Division

Brigadier Mike Elviss Commander | 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade I trust that you have been able to enjoy a well-earned summer break with family and friends, returned to work feeling refreshed and are now back into the pace of the Autumn term. It is quite amazing that we have been the United Kingdom’s Vanguard Armoured Infantry Brigade and NATO’s spearhead land force for 9 months now. You have worked incredibly hard thus far and it is as important now as it ever has been to keep our focus on readiness. The world continues to be an unstable and unpredictable place and events constantly remind us that we must expect the unexpected. My main effort remains our collective readiness. For our soldiers that involves remaining healthy and fit, staying on top of training demands and keeping our vehicle fleet ready to go; tasks that require constant effort.

The soldiers of 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade and its affiliated units have not only been ready but many have been deployed abroad over the summer period. 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland has recently returned from counterDaesh operations in Iraq. A battle group commanded by 5th Battalion, The Rifles and containing many troops from Germany-based units is six months into an eight month tour in Estonia as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence. The men and women of the battle group play a key part in deterring Russian aggression. Our local units have been exercising in Hungary, France, Spain and the UK, honing their readiness for war. It has also been busy throughout our community with many diverse events from the excellent Paderborn Station

Party in the Park, SSAFA charity tennis competition at Athlone Barracks and the Big Brew at Normandy Barracks among others. I would encourage you to take advantage of some excellent activities taking place over the October half-term, details of which are in this publication These events all take time and effort so thank you to all the volunteers and organisations for the hard work involved. Finally, I thank you all again for your continued support to our national security. I am confident that our soldiers are ready for whatever challenge appears, so for those of you who support our soldiers thank you for your sacrifices and efforts over the last nine months and please remain ready for the call when it comes.

DON’T THROW IT, SHOW IT!

ct is e j ro cy P a ea g b e n L a G c The BF - and you . beginning part of it By the time the last British Army units leave in 2019, British Forces will have been stationed in Germany for nearly 75 years. To mark this lengthy period of overseas deployment, HQ British Forces Germany (BFG) is producing a book: British Forces in Germany – The Lived Experience.

This is a call for you to share your lived experiences with us. More information on how you can submit your story can be found at https://bfgnet.de/legacyproject.html. We are also particularly interested in receiving any good quality photographs and memorabilia you may have.

It is estimated that over this significant period in our military history hundreds of thouands of military personnel, civilians and their families have served and lived in Germany. Every one of these people will have tales to tell or a special memory of their time serving in the British Army on the Rhine, United Kingdom Support Command (Germany) or BFG and we would like to hear them.

While we would prefer submissions to be made electronically we are very happy to receive stories, photographs or memorabilia by post if this is more convenient: Legacy and Projects Officer, HQ BFG, Catterick Barracks, BFPO 140

26 REGIMENT RA FAMILY DAY

The sun shone on Mansergh Barracks allowing all those agencies that support the GĂźtersloh Community to work together and lay on a real community event. The main aim for the day was to raise awareness of Home-Start, allowing people to make enquires about either being a volunteer or gaining support. Community support along with Home-Start GĂźtersloh, 26 Regiment RA Welfare, AWS, Royal British Legion, 17 & 159 Bty RA worked vigorously throughout the day to ensure the day was smooth and seamless for those that attended. The event had the support of The band of the Royal Corp of Signals who laid on a very personal and family engaging display allowing the children to march with the band and later

play a vital part in their musical performances for all those families from the community who came along. Huge thanks must go out to the Band Master and Band Sergeant Major along with their team of musicians who between performances had the opportunity to mingle with the community enjoying a BBQ and free ice cream. Their performance at this event was outstanding and just what the community needed. Some children brought their own instruments; some made their own shakers with Mum and Dad. The team from both Btys were on hand to answer questions about both the AS90 and the Warrior for the children and understand what jobs their parents do and take the opportunity to safely climb inside and sit in the seats. We even had a

special dignitary at the event with Jack Taylor who had the chance to bring along the special FS2 bear he was caring for over the weekend from Bielefeld Primary School. The bear experienced life in a Warrior armoured vehicle with Jack! Families took a bit of time out during the day to sit and enjoy the BBQ manned by NAAFI and background music from the RBL who kept the families and children up to date on different activities taking place. Activities included football coaching, the egg and spoon race, the sack race and the obstacle course. All of the activities had children, mums and dads take part, some of the mums showed their determination to win and the dads followed suit.

On Saturday 22 July 2017, 35 Engineer Regiment personnel and families gathered together on Barker Barracks cricket pitches for their annual summer families’ day. The “party in the park” inspired event kicked off at 2pm in spectacular style with BFG dance academy wowing the crowd with their daring dance moves.

“The regiment is so busy soit’s lovely for everyone to get together and have some downtine. We’re so pleased that the weather has stayed nice.”

The centre of the area was set up with an arena with challenging events, including a kids obstacle course, strong man competition and tug of war. Dotted around the centre were various activities and stands, many of which were set-up by individual squadrons. Visitors were able to make their own wooden birdhouse, get a ‘glitter tattoo’ and enjoy a drink from the Wives club Pimms stand. Pony rides, a bouncy castle and zorb balls ensured that the kids had plenty to keep them occupied. The day was intended to bring everyone together from across the regiment in a fun and relaxed environment. One event goer said: “The regiment is so busy, it’s lovely for everyone to get together and have some downtime. We’re so pleased that the weather has stayed nice.” Thanks to the NAAFI’s catering support; the BBQ was a huge success and provided much welcome tasty food. Also on standby was the ice cream van ready to provide cooling refreshments in the warm weather. Overall the event, which ran late into the evening with a live band, was a roaring success. Everyone had a fabulous time and the hard work of the organisers paid off. Therefore, a huge thank you must be extended to various personnel for their support in organising the day, including the soldiers, wives and dependants that gave their time to running various stands and most importantly to WO2 Mark Martin (QMSI Signals) for organising the event.

As part of the SSAFA Big Brew Up, a fancy dress fun run took place on Barker Barracks. The fancy dress ranged from a banana to a baby - everyone was definitely in high spirits. Congratulations to Sgt Jackson who won the prize for best

fancy dress and also for finishing 2nd place in the fun run.

The run around camp led the way to an impressive spread of cakes and of course a nice brew. It was fabulous to see such a large turnout in the Bull Pen and so many people getting involved. Turn to page 32 to read more about the SSAFA Big Brew Events that have happened across BFG.

Competitors had the chance to win a €20 gift voucher from Toys R Us, which was donated by the NAAFI. The overall winner would also have their poster used to advertise the upcoming Bonfire Night on 4th November. As the schools were closing for summer a deadline for 26th June was set.

Budding artists submitted their wonderful posters showcasing their creativity. After much consideration three posters were chosen. As all the winners were from Attenborough School a prize giving celebration was arranged there. WO2 Pete Wyatt presented the prizes to each of the students on behalf of the Paderborn Station Commander. In third place was Halle Manvell, from

BFG Charity Golf

The event, organised by Eddie Yule, was held to raise funds in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund and the Gilead Hospital Children’s Centre. There was a great turnout as 71 players registered for the event. At 10am the game started at the first tee by the BFG Commander, Brig. Ian Bell, hitting the ball. After a rainy day on the course, a meal in the clubhouse was served. There were a lot of items donated by different sponsors which were later entered into a draw and auction,

Year 1, who used a lovely range of bold and contrasting colours. Faron Thomas, Year 4 was awarded second place with her bright poster. In first place was Leandra Evans, Year 1, with her colourful family inspired bonfire night poster. All posters received were fantastic! The children put in a great effort. A special thank you must also be extended to Attenborough School.

Before the prize giving the BFG Commander thanked the organisers and the donors and said: “Last year we raised a whole raft of money and this year I am absolutely convinced we raised more. The weather is nowhere nearly as good but actually from my perspective it is a much better day. So all on you - thank you very much!” The prizes from the different categories were given, including the worst, youngest and oldest players, but being a charity event it was not about being the best but about taking part. After a whole day of excitement and laughs, Eddie Yule announced the total amount raised was over €4000; 50% each to the ABF and Gilead Hospital.

Presentations from BFG Commander Congratulations to all the staff from across BFG who received presentations from Commander BFG at the Quarterly Address. HECTORS ANGELS

THE ANGELS ARE BACK!

K

nown as ‘Hectors Angels’, 14 wives from 35 Engt Regt took up the challenge of a weekend in the field. Here is a first hand account from Vikki Adams:

On arrival at the exercise location, the 14 ‘Angels’ were split into two sections, 1 Section and 2 Section. We would continue to compete against each other throughout the exercise. We were briefed on our objective: 1 PWRR had planned an attack on our bridges. Immediately we set off to start our training. Day one was a fun-filled day and consisted of learning how to cam and conceal, erect ponchos, cook rations, drill, physical training, bridge-building and mine searching (the mines were surprisingly enjoyable and consisted of wine, biscuits and sweets). We were also set command tasks, which offered the reward of earning wine on completion. As you can imagine we worked very hard in our sections to complete the three tasks! Before the night ended we also had a navigation task. Using a compass we had to navigate to certain points to find a magic word. After a hard day of training we set up our ponchos in the harbour area and set about working together to cook our meals and enjoy our prizes.

Cammed up and Concealed. Can they rise up to the challenge though?

- - - - STAG ON - - - -

Running to our next station as a team we crawled under the cam net and used the bayonet on two dummies.

That night we were given instructions that we were to ‘stag on’ in case of an attack and a member from each section was allocated time from 2200-0500.

Next we sprinted to our command tasks and then onto mine searching, Finally, the last task was in sight and as a team we ran to the cannon which we had to carry a 100m distance over the finish line and then rebuild.

The morning of day two started at 0500 when we were all put in jail and had to peel potatoes with plastic spoons! The reason: somehow during the night, mine tape managed to make it’s way around one of the staff’s vehicles - a mystery that is still unsolved.

We were overwhelmed with pride! After we cheered the other section over the finish line, we headed off to get ready for our final parade led by Cpl Anderson.

The day continued with bayonet training, where some some amazing war faces could be seen. After working up an appetite we went for breakfast and sorted our admin ready for our next part of training - a trip to the ranges where we used the simulated rifles. It was an amazing experience. Upon returning back to area we were told to prepare for our final run in. In our sections we were to embark on a course that the staff had set for us. The staff briefed us and then we took to our final challenge. It started with a short sprint to the bridge where we assembled an infantry bridge from scratch, got our team over it and ran to the next station where we assembled two general purpose machine guns (gpmgs).

We all proudly marched onto the parade square and individuals were presented with prizes for best PT (Spr Marnell), best drill (Spr Adams), best shot (Spr Tippett) and best recruit (Spr Brotherton). The winning section was 2 section and they received the COS coin. After the parade we all headed to the BBQ that had been laid on. I know I speak for everyone when I say it was an amazing experience and we’ve made incredible bonds and the staff from 35 were outstanding. Kirsty Cluff summed up the stronger bonds and said “Exercise for two days, a Section for life”

MINDEN DAY PARADE On 1 August 2017 in incredibly inclement weather, soldiers from 1st Battalion Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment paraded in Barker Barracks, Germany for Minden Day a regimental anniversary to commemorate their forerunners participation in the Battle of Minden on this day in 1759.

The day provided an opportunity for 1 PWRR - The Tigers to celebrate the success of its forebear Regiments the 37th Foot (Royal Hampshires) in the battle and the decisive engagement in the Seven Year’s War that saw an Anglo-German army defeat a larger French Army. Following the reading of the Minden address all soldiers on parade were presented with a rose to wear in their headdress by wives of the soldiers and officers of the Battalion to celebrate the day. The custom of wearing a rose goes back to the day of the battle when as the British soldiers first advanced to engage with the enemy they picked wild roses that were growing in the hedgerows and on the battlefield and placed them in their caps. The first to receive his rose from the wife of Lieutenant Colonel Cornwell, Commanding Officer of the Battalion, was The Chief of the General Staff (CGS), General Sir Nicholas Carter KCB CBE DSO ADC who was visiting the Battalion. As the rain continued to fall CGS congratulated the Battalion and informed them that their forefathers would have been proud of them. He concluded his visit by awarding a number of promotions to soldiers on parade. Army Press Office

MORTOR PLATOON 1PWRR's Mortar Platoon, the Mortar specialists of the NATO High Readiness Joint Task Force, conducted essential training on Sennelager Ranges over July 2017. The aim was to maintain current skill levels and also to provide live fire training to the more Junior members of the Platoon, many of whom had not fired live rounds before. The Platoon practised Light-Role Mortar line drills throughout the training package, firing high-explosive 81mm ammunition and conducting an extensive Illumination shoot, a capability which is extremely important for the Battlegroup, lighting up vast areas of the Battlefield during night operations. The Platoon also conducted various Live GPMG shoots from the Platoon's Bulldog fleet.

SASRA

“On the weekend of 22nd

September 2017, 54 members of the BFG community met at Church House for the SASRA Fellowship Weekend. We had teaching from author and Evangelist Roger Carswell on ‘Unusual Stories From The Old Testament’. The teaching was challenging and inspiring, even challenging me the Army Scripture Reader for BFG to re-read the book of 1st Kings in the Bible, so unusual where the stories that I have forgotten them.

Weekend

The kids work, run by Padre Richard, Anna and Ollie Iwlew, was fantastic looking at the life of Martin Luther, Martin had an interesting life. He was a monk, disguised himself as a Knight and called himself Sir George. He later rescued some nuns by hiding them in barrels and lived in a castle. Martin saw somethings that where wrong in the Church so he posted 95 things on the Church door in Wittenberg in Germany. Roger Carswell had promised to bring a small book stall, and broke that

promise by bringing a wide selection of Christian books which were sold at discount prices. Books to encourage and equip people in their faith. Four soldiers gave their testimonies telling about the impact of knowing Jesus as their Lord on their lives, and how the Bible helps them in daily living. The wonderful Church House Warden and Staff where so helpful and worked so hard to provide a great atmosphere.”

ASR Gavin Dickson The next SASRA Weekend at Church House will be held 25th-27th May 2018 where Rev. John Brand pastor of Grace Community Church and principle of Edinburgh Bible College will be the main speaker and as always a full kids programme will be ran. British Army Reserve Unit in Germany Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Y

ou would not readily associate a small compound on the banks of the fastflowing River Weser near Minden with the British Army. Yet it is here that you can find a very specialist niche of the Army and the only Reserve unit stationed permanently in Germany. 412 Amphibious Engineering Troop was formed 20 years ago and has always been associated with the River Weser, initially part of 28 Amph Engr Regt and based for many years in Hameln until the closure of the station. Other Reserve units, 410 Plant Tp RE in Osnabrück, 408 Sqn in Berlin had previously been disbanded under Options for Change in the mid-1990s. The troop rebased to Minden to be co-located with 23 Amphibious Engineer Troop and the German 130 Pionierbattalion, operating the M3 bridging amphibious vehicles. Both British troops are now part of 75 Engr Regt based in UK. Sgt Michael Taylor has served with 412 Tp since its formation. He took a short break after serving as a regular soldier and, like most of his colleagues, lives and works in Germany. Michael witnessed the transition to the M3 Rigs which can either be used as single ferries or joined together to bridge a wide

The expertise of the Amphibious Engineers has been recognised at the highest level

water gap. “After M3 training, the first big thing we done was to take part in the Ulan Eagle series of exercise held in Poland,” said Sgt Taylor. “Since then we have done lots of major exercises and the troop was mobilized in 2003 for Op TELIC in Iraq. We had a couple of guys go out with the Squadron on Op HERRICK and have done a few MACC tasks (Military Aid to the Civilian Community) as well. We remain exceptionally busy and the amphibious capability is completely booked out.” Their expertise is very much in demand and together with their British and German colleagues supported Ex ANACONDA in Poland last year. This year they have been heavily involved in supporting NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence in the Baltic States. The expertise of the Amphibious Engineers has been recognised at the highest level as Commander Field Army, Lt General Patrick Sanders and his German counterpart, Lt Gen Carsten Jacobsen both visited Minden earlier in the week and was visibly impressed with the joint capability. “The M3 capability really underline the cooperation and

the importance of staying close together,” said General Sanders. “The M3 Rigs are awesome and to see the skills those soldiers have is incredible. To think they do that at night, and to do it in a way that is safe to get tanks and armoured vehicles across is a pretty amazing skill and an amazing piece of kit.” The Bundeswehr has also been using the M3 bridging capability for some time and has no regrets about the joint working relationship and interoperability. “The Engineer Batallion 130 is a single asset that we have in NATO forces. It combines the M3 capabilities of Great Britain and Germany and we are using this Garrison to train them, prepare them to deploy all over Europe on a huge number of exercises. To bring General Sanders here to Minden and to show him the joint capabilities is an important message for both armies.” This is replicated at the working level. “We have close cooperation and have operated mixed crews,” says Sgt Taylor who believes that both M3 usage and experience will continue to develop further. “There are no language barriers, they are professional, we are professional and we get on like a house on fire.”

COMMANDER BFG RECEPTION

O

n 6 September 2017, Sparrenburg Castle came alive to the wonderful sounds of the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals as they entertained both guests and a large crowd during the British Forces Germany annual reception.

Against the stunning backdrop in the grounds of the historic castle the reception, hosted by Brigadier Ian Bell, Commander British Forces Germany, provided the perfect location to engage with the wider German community who have

and continue to support British Forces personnel to live, work and train in Germany. The guests included representatives from the Lord Mayor’s Office. The crowds were impressed with the performance. In fact immediately after many members of the public approached band members to express their gratitude for the magnificent performance. Brigadier Ian Bell said: “I wanted to say thanks to all those who support the British Forces live, work and train

“Members of the public approached band members to express their gratitude for the magnificent performance.” in Germany – central to that are public officials and local businesses, but also critically the public who have welcomed us into their communities. Doing so in such an iconic location made it particularly special. I am immensely pleased that the Band’s performance was enjoyed by so many.” All of the guests were then invited for drinks and canapés. A wonderful end to a wonderful evening.

T

hursday 14th September was an incredible marathon for the SSAFA ladies who assisted with the three different events. First thing in the morning, at 1000 hours, everything was ready in front of 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade Headquarters. A big SSAFA teapot was guarded by the tanks while everybody enjoyed their cakes and brews. Just after that Sarah Elviss, Chair of SSAFA Paderborn, rushed to be on time for her next appointment at Normandy Welfare where a ‘Mad Hatters’ tea party took place to raise funds for the Armed Forces charity. At the end of the day you could find the SSAFA Paderborn Chair once again with her apron on, this time at Paderborn United Club House, at Bad Lippspringe Sport Pitches. All the teams had a special break from training to go and visit the SSAFA stall and taste the amazing cakes donated by parents of the players. A massive thanks to everyone who got involved either by donating or organising events.

Look out for follow up in the next edition!

W

IMBLEDON came to Athlone Barracks when the Queen’s Royal Hussars kindly hosted the SSAFA Tennis Tournament. There was plenty of competitive spirit for the first inter-unit competition supported by SSAFA and organised by the QRH’s RAPTCI SSgt Rush. In a close battle that saw some superb tennis the winner was Lt Johnny Sleeman, QRH, and the runner up was Maj Robbie Thorne, QRH. After the inter-unit competition it was the families’ turn. There was again some excellent tennis matches and it was great to see so many people getting involved in the sport. The families’ day kicked off in the afternoon and the SSAFA team’s prayers for good weather were answered. The bouncy castles, glitter tattoos and the QRH drum horse, Charlie, were a massive hit with the kids. The QRH chefs prepared an absolute feast for the event and of course no Tennis Tournament would be complete without strawberries and cream and Pimms which proved popular choices on the day. There was an amazing performance by the BFG Dance Academy and we are very grateful to them. This event was a fantastic opportunity for the SSAFA Paderborn team to say a huge thank to the community for their support. SSAFA is a charity dedicated to helping service personnel and their families; some recent examples of this are helping BFG families with childcare costs and specialist teaching training. Your donations are really important as all the money raised in Paderborn stays in Paderborn.

Paderborn Ladies Rugby LRFCPU... ....have played their first official competition on 23rd of September at a regional tournament in Hannover. The commitment of Sgt Myra MacDonald is the main reason the team exists. She got together with coach, Marc Rees, to see who in the BFG community would be interested in being part of a Ladies Rugby Team. After lots of support from BFBS and BFGnet, the word soon got out to the

community and the team has gone from strength to strength. The team look nothing but professional as their new strips arrived with thanks to the support of John Pluckwell and the Army Welfare Service. The team are also thankful for the sponsorship from Senne Hussars and Grant and Green.

URO!

Rugby Football Club Paderbor

Played their first tournament! After...

...eight months of training in the rain and recovering from all the bumps and bruises, Paderborn Ladies Rugby were ready for their first tournament in Hannover. The coach, Marc Rees, had selected 12 players from a mixed experienced team squad of 19. As the sun rose on Saturday 23rd September, the full squad of 19 headed off to Germania RFC for their first test. This was a true reflection of the team ethos that had been installed from the start as all 19 wanted to travel and support their team.

The first game went well against Bielefeld/Osnabruck combined team but Paderborn Ladies went down 3 tries to 0 in first half despite gallant defensive on their line for much of the half. After words of encouragement from the senior experienced members of the team the second half display was of the top drawer. This included offloads and inter passing of the highest quality – a performance the ladies should be proud of. Paderborn scored their first try which was cheered on by the rest of the squad. Despite the excellent half, the Bielefeld/Osnabruck side won the game. The second game was against a strong St Pauli team. The game

ended with a 54-0 victory St Pauli. After the pool games were completed, Paderborn drew against Kiel in the one off bottom of pool clash. The sheer experience of Kiel shone through and they came out winners of the game. Paderborn Ladies Rugby gained valuable playing experience for future tournaments, where they will now build on key points and work hard in training and strive for that elusive first win which would boost the squad’s confidence tenfold. Congratulations to everyone who took part!

my time at the hive Jordon has now finished his work placement with the HIVE and looks back on his time working in Sennelager.

I

n 2016 I started a work placement with the HIVE in Sennelager. The placement was organised through Kings Vocational Hub to help me learn business skills to supplement my course in Business Administration. The HIVE is an important provider of information to all BFG service personnel, their families, veterans based here in Germany and those that support our community. I was able to work two mornings a week while continuing my formal studies at Kings Sixth Form and the Vocational Hub. I was allocated both a mentor from the hub as well as a supervisor in the HIVE who worked together to ensure I was getting the experience relevant to my course. The experience and skills I have

gained have really benefitted me. In the past I found dealing with telephone calls from customers particularly challenging and am now confident to answer customer queries whether faceto-face or on the telephone. I have gained invaluable insight into how offices work and learnt many practical skills such as booklet making, poster design and presentation of noticeboards. I have also had a chance to use my technical IT skills for the benefit of the HIVE and make some processes more efficient. I have drafted the Young Persons Guide which brings together all the information appropriate for young people in BFG such as youth clubs, organisation, sports and support. You can find a copy in your local HIVE! At the beginning of 2017 I gave an interview to Forces TV about my time in the HIVE which can be found at the following link: http://forces.tv/66990239 it was nerve-racking, but I enjoyed the whole experience in the end! Unexpectedly, through it, I have made contact with a long lost relative who saw me on the TV and got in touch; an extra bonus!

“I would like to thank the whole HIVE Team for giving me this opportunity and supporting me.”

My work placement journey has now come to an end. I would like to thank the whole HIVE Team for giving me this opportunity and supporting me. I promise to make the best use of my new found skills in the future!

Meet Ffion Batty. She is nine years old. Read on to find out what she has been up to.

Interview You are obviously a very brave girl, how did your mum feel about you doing the cut?

I have wanted to raise money for charity for about a year but wasn’t sure which one to go for.

My mum has been really supportive, she double checked a few times with me before she set up my just giving page as she wanted to be sure that I knew what I was doing.

I was considering the national autistic society as my sister is autistic and there needs to be more awareness. However my grandad was really poorly and my mum just kept saying he’s not well.

She was nervous for me as she was worried I might cry when my hair got cut.

She eventually told me and my sister that grandad had terminal cancerhe didn’t want us to know straight away as we would be so upset but there came a point when he got worse that she told us. My mum explained that he wouldn’t last the year and she then explained what the Macmillan nurses do. That was it, I knew that was what I would raise money for. I decided to cut my hair off as I had been growing it for years and everyone knew I loved my long hair. There was also the fact that I could donate my hair to the little princess trust. They make hair into wigs for children with cancer undergoing treatment. My mum had also told me about this charity and knowing my hair will help another child is great.

My dad was great too and I told him and mum that when I had done the cut I wanted blue hair. Dad said I could go blue but mum said the school would not allow that. So we came to a compromise and chose a black blue. I love it!

Ffion Batty

“Both mummy

and daddy keep telling me how proud they are of me and that what I’ve done is amazing and selfless.

Tell us in your own words why you decided to cut your hair for charity.

Both mummy and daddy keep telling me how proud they are of me and that what I’ve done is amazing and selfless.

Everyone came into school in their own clothes instead of uniform and donated money. The school raised 157.21 euros.

What was it like doing the cut live in the BFBS studios?

You have raised an amazing amount so far. If people want to donate more, where can they go?

When my mum asked BFBS to put the link on the page to try and get some more donations they said they wanted me to do it live in their studios. I was really excited but so nervous too. I was filmed and me and my mum chatted to the the DJ live on the radio. They were really nice and we had a fun afternoon. The DJ, Chris Pearson even asked me what my favorite artists were and played some of my favorite songs while Laura the hairdresser cut my hair. Laura cut off my long plait on a live feed. Laura even gave me a beautiful posy of flowers for being so brave. She was lovely and thanks to her the cut was done. Everyone at BFBS were great and have said me and my sister can pop in and say hi whenever we are in the area.

Yes, I wanted to raise 200 euros which I thought was a lot and all our friends and family donated straight away and we hit the target really quickly so we raised it to 500 euros. I was amazed when someone donated 2.500, my mum thought someone made a mistake but it turns out it was an online gaming company that my dad, grandad and gran used. My grandad had said goodbye to them all before he died and left the link on the site explaining what I was doing and the boss of the company donated! I still can’t believe it. That donation made me 7th for donations collected in a day on the Macmillan website. I’ve now raised over 4.000!!! I’m not sure how long we will keep this going for but if people want to donate I’d be so happy. This is the link https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/karenbatty1?newPage=True When you are not being a hero, what do you like to do in your spare time? Haha, I don’t think I’m a hero! I just wanted to do something good. In my spare time I love to bake with my mummy, we make some yummy treats. I love to go ice skating or swimming, I go to brownies every week and I enjoy playing outside with my friends on my bike or scooter or playing in the park. I like playing with dolls with my sister too.

Did all your classmates support you? My classmates have been great. They thought it was fantastic and couldn’t wait to see my hair. They said I was really brave. My mum asked the school if there was any way they could help with donations so they held a mufti day.

I also love to make things. I am very crafty, My mum thinks I’m really clever at making things Have you got anymore plans to raise more money? I’m not sure yet, we are not sure when we will close this one and then I will just be me for a while.

Exam Success

King’s School: Another successful year

O

nce again, the students at King’s School, Gutersloh, are celebrating fantastic results in both GCSEs and A levels this year. The results, which show how well students have responded to the very tough new exams, are just reward for the huge amount of hard work from the young people and the support they received from parents and teachers. For GCSEs, students were the first to sit the new revised GCSEs in English and Maths with their new 1-9 grading system and it is worth remembering that the changes mean that it is impossible to compare last year’s results with this year. As the chief of OFQUAL, the exam’s regulator, has warned, there will be much volatility this year and we are especially proud of how students, staff and parents at King’s School have responded to these changes. We are particularly pleased that one student was awarded the prestigious, top grade 9 in English and 5 students were awarded the 9 in Maths. The excellent results overall include some outstanding individual achievements. Most notable were Eddie Lawrence who achieved 6 A* and 4 A grades including a grade 9 in Maths and Meghan Udale who achieved 4 A*, 1 A and 2 Bs including a grade 9 in English; Josh Trevis and Leilah Vakacegu who both exceeded expectations in gaining on average 2 grades higher per subject since their

reports in February. In total, 20% of all grades were higher than expected which is testament to students’ resilience and perseverance. At Key Stage 5, we had even more reason to celebrate as 80% of results were a grade C+ or equivalent and 46% were a Grade A/A* - both of which are above the UK national average. In total, 59% of all grades were higher than expected which is a tremendous result. Again, these phenomenal results include outstanding achievements such as Florence Amabile who achieved 2 Distinction stars and 1 grade A and Elena Downton who achieved 2 grade As and 1 Distinction star. Headteacher Emma Bryson commented: “We are all delighted with the results and what they will mean for our young people as they move forwards on their journeys. They fully embraced the school’s ethos of working together for success and their positive attitudes and commitment have paid off. I am very lucky to have such a talented group of teachers who have worked tirelessly to support our students and we are thrilled to see how successful the students have been”.

eet Ginny. She’s fourteen, autistic, and has a heart-breaking secret. Ginny Moon is trying to make sense of a world that just doesn’t seem to add up…. After years in foster care, Ginny is in her fourth forever family, finally with parents who will love her. Everyone tells her that she should feel happy…but she has never stopped crafting her Big Secret Plan of Escape. Because something happened, a long time ago – something that only Ginny knows – and nothing will stop her going back to put it right... While reading, I forgot at times that this is indeed a work of fiction. The voice of Ginny throughout is so honest and unique; it’s hard to believe she isn’t a real person. I was captivated by Ginny and her perception of the world, how she viewed it and how
