‘Courtyard house’: A large house where the main parts and activities of a house are disposed around the courtyard. As Ar. Charles Correa says, “when one steps out of the box to find oneself into a Veranda, and from there into an open to sky courtyard, and from there to under a tree and beyond that to a terrace covered by a pergola, the boundary lines between these areas are not formal yet sharply demarcated. Subtle modulations of light, in the quality of ambient air, register each transition onto our senses. I believe that this pluralism, this ambiguity, is an essential characteristic of built form in a warm climate.”

Project Description

Project location Project Type Site Area Builtup Area Status Position

The project is a new build, on a relatively small piece of land. This is a single family home, consisting of the couple and their two daughters who are young adults. Programmatically, we divided the spaces, such that public spaces are on a lower level, while private spaces are upstairs. The site, located in an upscale neighbourhood in Jubilee Hills, with a narrow frontage meant multiple floors in order to accommodate the entire requirement. We added solids and voids in the form of protruding spaces and terraces, to create an interesting play of levels almost stacked up like blocks.

Block Massing Deconstruction

Stacking these blocks and then splitting them laterally create courtyards and slits that formed sky-lights. These vertical slits floods every corner with controlled natural light, and is the most positive experience in the house. Sky-lit staircase has louvered ventilators with filtering exhaust system, on its topmost level to send out hot air accumulated at the top.

Circulation There was a lot of focus on bringing the outdoors into the living spaces. All public spaces seamlessly open up outwards, blurring the indoor-outdoor boundaries. The house, on its small piece of land, has many voids, in the form of open to sky courtyards. Large terraces are planned at multiple levels. A north facing skylight in the central zone floods the entire house with diffused day light. Sky-lit staircase has louvered ventilators with filtering exhaust system, on its topmost level to send out hot air accumulated at the top

Texture & User Experience Raw Materials such as exposed brick, formed concrete and steel were the primary materials used, eliminating the need to finish them with another layer. Play of light caused by steel bridge on the textures of concrete varied through the day. Planters built into the brick wall brings down flowering creepers to create a pleasing experience while walking up the main stairs to the house.

Jaali wall To filter in light into the parking space, we casted 1200 custom sized fly-ash bricks to create a screen that transformed the space with its dramatic play of light.

One of the many courtyards in the house, this one screened for privacy, made of 1200 fly-ash bricks custom made to size on the site. Exposed concrete slab adds to the character of the space.

Long faceted stone wall at the entrance defines character of the space and programmatic movements.Facets allows the light to bounce off its surface at different angles through the day. IN the morning through the eastern outdoor space and in the evening through the west facing back yard.
