The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Premier: Compact EV is an Excellent Buy!

Review by Veeno Dewan

The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is an updated version of General Motors' compact five-door electric hatchback. It has a new CUV-style design, which is well-considered and attractive. The vehicle comes in two trims, starting at $39,998 plus $1,800 destination and freight for the entry-level LT trim, while the Premier version costs $45,498 plus options. The Bolt EUV is powered by an electric motor producing 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 65-kWh battery driving the front wheels. It has a range of 397 km on a full charge and energy consumption estimates of 16.8 kWh/100 km in city driving, 20.1 on the highway, and 18.3 in combined driving. Safety features include auto high beams, cruise control, forwardcollision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.

The Bolt EUV's interior features include a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, automatic climate control, keyless entry and ignition, power windows and door locks, and a tilting and telescoping steering column. Both trims come with a power-adjustable driver’s seat, 10.2-inch infotainment screen, eightinch configurable gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger, cargo privacy cover, heated front seats, and steering wheel. The Premier version adds niceties such as rain-sensing wipers, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and ambient lighting.

The Bolt EUV's all-electric powertrain provides instantaneous acceleration and a low center of gravity, making it fun to drive. The steering is light but responsive, and it is very pleasant to drive. The EV drivetrain supports decent enough acceleration for quick acceleration or highway passing. Using the Sport mode adds an extra fizz to the Bolt's throttle response and ups steering feel, although it will reduce the battery range.

Inside, the Bolt EUV is well-appointed and tech-forward. The 10.2-inch in- fotainment touchscreen is easy to use and provides access to a wide range of features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. There's also a wireless charging pad

• Drip and Sprinkler Systems for your smartphone, so you can keep your device charged up without any cords getting in the way. The available Bose premium audio system provides excellent sound quality, and there's plenty of connectivity options for all your devices.

The Bolt EUV interior is roomy and comfortable. The seats are supportive, ergonomics good and is very passenger-friendly. With its rear seat up – There is 462 L of cargo space in the EUV compared to 470 L in the previous Bolt. The car has a hidden underfloor storage compartment. Fit finish and interior material quality is particularly good with a neat, uncluttered design. Downsides include a suspension that can be a bit jiggly on rough surfaces, no All Wheel Drive version, and the Bolt is not particularly sporty to drive.

In addition to its impressive range and driving performance, the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV also boasts a range of advanced technology features. One standout feature is the available Super Cruise system, which allows for handsfree driving on compatible highways. This system uses a network of cameras, radar sensors, and GPS mapping to ensure that the vehicle stays in its lane and maintains a safe following distance from other vehicles. The driver must remain alert and ready to take control of the vehicle if necessary, but Super Cruise takes a lot of the stress out of highway driving.

2023 Chevrolet Bolt Premier. Priced from $39,998 plus $1,800 destination and freight. Premier at $45,498, plus options.

Giving the gift of life

(NC) It was during a phone call that Tom Weinstein learned that Bryan, the son of a long-time friend, had lost the function of his kidneys and was on kidney dialysis. This friend moved out of province shortly after he and Tom graduated from university but the two remain friends and have stayed connected for decades.

Through many conversations, Tom learned about the physical and emotional challenges presented by kidney function loss, which involved many hours of dialysis, over many days each week at a hospital, and a generally poor quality of life. Tom also learned that a kidney transplant was the only treatment to eliminate the need for dialysis and to allow a person to live a normal life again.

After meeting Bryan in person on a visit in 2011, as an adult, and learning more about the impact of kidney function on his life, Tom began to consider the idea of becoming a living donor.

Initially, he thought that at age 64 he would be too old, but with solid medical advice and strong support from his wife, he decided to begin the extensive testing process to be a donor – as did Bryan’s testing to be a recipient. After multiple tests over many months, Tom’s health was de- clared excellent, and he qualified to be a kidney donor.

However, Tom and Bryan were not a “match” for kidney transplant. Undeterred, Tom and Bryan entered the Kidney Paired Donation Exchange operated by Canadian Blood Services, a unique inter-provincial program where living donors provide recipients with a compatible kidney. Tom was matched with a kidney patient and donated his kidney anonymously. There were five pairs (donors and recipients) in Tom and Bryan’s chain at transplant hospitals across Canada. There were five surgeries in the morning to remove a kidney and five surgeries in the afternoon to implant a kidney.

Today, Bryan is well and thriving in his computer career. Tom has joined the Transplant Ambassador Program, a peer support program under the umbrella of the Kidney Patient and Donor Alliance.

Tom shares his story in the hope that it may help others to begin to think about living donation. In Tom’s case, it all started with a thought and evolved from there. As Tom says, “The decision was simple…a fellow human being needed help and I was in a position to offer that help.”
