‘The Little Shop For Little Dogs’ Lea Spencer believes that our furry friends appreciate luxury just as much as we do.
Madison Spencer lounges on her hand-made bed of silk, velvet and satin and rests her head on a tasselled cushion embedded with antique rhinestone. She’s not a pampered princess but a fluffy, adorable West Highland terrier. With an owner like Lea Spencer, whose passion is making luxury bedding and neckwear for little dogs, Madison is undoubtedly the envy of all the pooches in the neighbourhood. Lea, who also runs a successful interior design business, was first inspired to begin her unique craft nine years ago. Madison suffered from skin allergies, for which there seemed to be no cure. ‘I couldn’t get them under control. I changed her diet, did everything I could think of... then I noticed that every time the fabric company reps came around to update my samples library for the business, the first thing she did was run over and lie on them - $250 a metre fabrics!’ So Lea decided to make Madison her own bed, using off cuts of silk, velvet, taffeta and high end satin. Madison adored it, her allergies disappeared and as a testament to the quality of Lea’s craftsmanship, the bed is still in use today. Lea then began to make the occasional dog bed for customers whose homes she’d decorated. ‘I’d use some of the beautiful fabric they’d used in the decorating and make it fit in with the decor of the house, so it didn’t look like the usual dog stuff.’
Her hobby became a business, The House of Madison West, which opened on the internet in 2009 and now has a shopfront in Spring Hill ‘The Little Shop For Little Dogs’. There’s everything to make even the most sophisticated dog drool – from luxurious bedding and embroidered leads and collars accessorised with their original pepe la poo bag holder, to antique silver grooming brushes, limited edition fine dining bowls and for the dog who has everything – a spa pack, including a satin trimmed towel and bathmat embroidered with your dog’s name and toenail polish! ‘We have a large selection of fabrics in stock and every single item is completely couture and has its own unique design. I design and make them all – it’s a passion for me. I love doing it.’ Madison, as her quality control expert, has to give the woof of approval for each product. Lea is also able to combine her hobby of collecting antiques with her business. Each item she creates is finished off with the sparkle of an authentic vintage rhinestone, often sourced in her yearly overseas visits
she calls her ‘little buying trips.’ Her ‘Time Traveller’ range of haute couture bedding consists of an original vintage leather suitcase from the 30s and 40s lined with a feather and down mattress and cushions. ‘If you don’t like the dog bed looking like a dog bed, you can close the lid during the day,’ she explains, or take it with you when you travel. Lea assures me that dogs do notice and appreciate quality. She cites the example of a lovely Staffy, Snowy, whose owner was quite certain that her dog was too rough and tumble to appreciate the finer arts. Snowy fell in love with the antique grooming brush and cuddle cushion Lea gave her and now won’t go anywhere without them. After admiring Lea’s exquisite craftsmanship, I was tempted to rush out and buy a small dog just so I’d have an excuse to buy something. But what’s to stop me splurging on myself? The OC (out cold) snoozer looks pretty comfy...

talking to the animals IN THE MOVIE DR DOOLITTLE, REX HARRISON SANG THAT IT WOULD BE A MIRACLE IF HE COULD TALK TO THE ANIMALS. FOR PSYCHIC AMANDA DE WARREN, IT’S ALL IN A DAY’S WORK. Medium. Psychic. Animal behaviourist. Super nanny to pets. Animal communicator. Amanda De Warren has been described by all these terms. Which does she prefer? She laughs. ‘There are so many hats with me. Yesterday I did a reading, the lady’s father had passed away. She hadn’t spoken to him for 40 years because he had sexually abused her...so I guess you could also put counsellor.’ Amanda is unique in the psychic world, in that she is able to communicate with living animals as well as animals and people who’ve passed over. ‘I guess animal communicator would be a top priority with me...70 percent of my communications are pet communications. Behaviour problems, pets that have passed over, anything from rabbits to guinea pigs, dogs, horses, cats, even pigs, cows and goats.’ How do people benefit from communicating with pets who’ve passed over? ‘There are so many benefits from it, closure is one of them. If they had to put the pet down which is a major trauma for everybody, I’ve never had a pet say to me “you murdered me.” What they say is “you put me out of my misery.” ’ Amanda does all her consultations by phone and the most common pet problem is behaviour – for example, cats and dogs fighting, jealousy when another pet is introduced into the household, animals running away. She says dogs are like children – they need to be given boundaries. ‘Sometimes owners let them get away with everything. Dogs love direction, they don’t like to be in this limbo of not being told to do.’
Sometimes pet problems can be due to physical causes. Amanda cites the story of a woman who had taken her dog to a number of vets but none of them could tell her why it was behaving strangely. ‘I said to her straight away, “your dog has a rash and it’s because of a yellow plant in the back yard. The pollen gets into her throat and swells it up, she’s allergic to it.” ’ When the woman cut the tree down the rash started to disappear. Perhaps she should add private detective to her credentials after this story. ‘These three little dogs told me about the lady with blonde hair and red jacket that would come into the house sometimes and go into the bedroom with their daddy and close the door. I told the dogs to tell me when she’s there next, then I rang the lady (the owner) and sure enough, there he was playing around.’ Her affinity with animals led her to a career as a wildlife carer, which included koala handler at Dreamworld and the keeper for Harriet, the famous Galapagos tortoise at Australia Zoo. These days, as a high profile medium who also writes the weekly pet psychic column in That’s Life magazine, Amanda is kept very busy, and also has her own two dogs, Shakira and Kelly to chat to in her down time. Her greatest satisfaction, she says, comes from helping people with closure and creating a better relationship between pets and their owners. ‘It’s a ripple effect. If we have a better relationship with our pets, that enhances our life totally.’

fetch. Pet Company When its time for a break, often the first thoughts for all pet owners is who will care for my pet while I’m away. Often the first thought is family, friends, neighbours or a local pet sitter or kennel as a last resort. But how do you know that your pampered pup or kitty is cared for properly and according to your usual routine. You don’t. fetch. is your alternative. fetch. Pet Company was established by Samantha Gibson in 2008, with the soul purpose of providing pet owners with alternatives to boarding kennels or ‘backyard run’ pet sitters. Ever since its inception, fetch. has strived to give its clients and their owners a service that far exceeds any expectations. fetch. has succeeded in bringing a high level of professionalism to the Pet Care industry, something which was lacking for a long time. fetch. has a variety of services that caters specifically for pampered and special needs pets far exceeding the normal pet sitting or boarding kennel services. fetch.’s exclusive Pet Concierge service cares for your treasured pets in the comfort of their own home, with qualified staff certified in Pet First Aid and CPR as well as being police checked. “What sets us apart from our competitors is our genuine care for all animals and our ability to follow their owners routine” Mrs Gibson says, “We have even provided cooked meals to past clients, if thats what is required”. Included in the pet concierge packages are a free initial meet and greet, mail collection, waste management and security checks for added assurance to owners whilst they are away. If the idea of leaving your pets at home isn’t for you, they even offer a pet minding service which is ‘approved by spoilt pets’. STAR OF ST BERNARDS The star attraction at St Bernards Hotel takes it all in his stride.
STORY Robin Storey PHOTOS News Pix This page: Leo the St Bernard lazing by the fire. Right page, clockwise: Molly taking a nap. St Bernards Hotel Gardens. St Bernards Hotel Entrance.
There are many reasons why St Bernards Hotel at Tamborine Mountain is one of the most popular attractions in the Gold Coast hinterland. Its history, dating back to 1881, the panoramic mountain views to Moreton Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the rainforest walks and the country hospitality, to name a few. Then there’s Leo, the St Bernard dog. Says director Warren Morton, ‘in order of what people come to the hotel for, he would be number one. People come to the door and the first thing they ask is “where’s Leo?” Leo, who’s now five years old, has been a resident of the hotel since he was a puppy, part of a tradition of St Bernard dogs at the hotel that goes back about fifty years. The hotel was named after a local waterfall, St Bernard’s Falls, but the name originates from St Bernard’s Pass on the Swiss-Italian border. This was the site of the St Bernard monastery, where St Bernard dogs were kept for rescuing travellers lost or injured in the snow. Because of their powerful build and keen sense of smell and direction, they were ideal for search and rescue missions, a barrel of brandy strapped to them to revive the victims.
‘He’s awesome with children,’ Warren says. ‘They crawl all over him, pull his ear, poke him in the eye. He’s very good with disadvantaged people too, if he sees someone in a wheelchair he’ll go up and be especially friendly to them.’ Leo is now sharing the limelight after the recent arrival of Molly, a sweet-faced St Bernard puppy. ‘In his middle age on a busy day he tends to get sick of the public, he’ll go and hide somewhere and I thought it would be good to have a second dog to give him a rest.’
People come to the door and the first thing they ask is “where’s Leo?”
Although Molly has settled into the hotel as if she were born there, Leo’s ignoring her, though Warren is sure Molly will win him over. He says St Bernards are intelligent, easy to train and adapt to new rules quickly. ‘They’re also very arrogant dogs...if you scold Leo he’ll go and sulk for a day. If he doesn’t want to talk to anyone he’ll just keep sleeping, they’ve got a mind of their own.’ All the same, Warren says, ‘he seems to know when you pull a camera out, he’ll put his head up for that.’ Only to be expected of a dog who has his own Facebook page. And if the guests have any say in the matter, the tradition of St Bernard dogs at St Bernards Hotel will live on for years to come.

Leo’s life is far removed from his traditional role, although he does have a ceremonial barrel which is brought out on special occasions – without the brandy. He goes for a run in the morning and
then is free to spend the rest of the day lolling around being fussed over by guests and visitors. The only searching he does is for a comfortable spot on the leather lounge in front of the fire – even if it means nosing someone out of the way.

The Dog Food Dilemma
I have always believed that to get the best out of your dog in quality and length of life, you must feed them the best possible food. But what is the best?
The pet food industry is a massive market and the variety of pet foods available often leaves the new dog owner bewildered. What type of food should you buy? How often should you feed your dog? How should you store the food and prepare it? LET’S LOOK AT THE CHOICES
Dry food/Dog biscuits are the most prominent. Usually sold in bags from 1 to 20 kg, this food is convenient and cost effective, but not all dogs will race to the bowl for a meal of dry biscuits. Palatability, particularly with small dogs, can be an issue.
When choosing a commercial dry food diet from a well known manufacturer, you have the benefit of knowing you are feeding a balanced diet with the correct levels of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Many years of research and truck loads of money have gone into producing balanced commercial foods for dogs.
However, raw meat alone is not a balanced diet for dogs and supplementation of calcium and other vitamins and minerals is required to balance this diet long term. Recipes exist for this but it can be time consuming and the storage, lack of availability and constant need to purchase fresh foods does not suit everyone.
However, the variation in cost between these types of food is massive. Why?
You can prepare cooked foods for your pets but they also need to be balanced to ensure the health of your dog long term. You should follow a recipe and you can cook batches weekly and freeze them, then re-heat before serving to ensure palatability. Depending on technique, the cooking process can remove significant quantities of vitamins and minerals, so you must take care to ensure the dog receives these important parts of their diet.
Digestibility, or more correctly bio-availability is the hidden factor. Cheaper dry foods are based on plant proteins rather than animal proteins and so are poorly utilised by an animal’s body. Premium pet dry foods are better because they contain higher quality ingredients, are better balanced to be a complete diet, contain no artificial colours and have fewer preservatives. Because these foods are based on high quality animal source proteins and fats they are more highly digestible. This means the body can use a higher percentage of the food with fewer waste products. You can also buy wet or canned foods, but these, too, have variations in quality. They also have the complicating factor of containing high levels of water, so dogs have to eat a lot more to get the same nutritional benefit. While being convenient and generally more palatable than dry food, they go off quickly in the heat and need to be discarded if not eaten straight away. Raw foods have been advocated for many years as a way of getting back to the basics of feeding dogs. Chicken frames, necks, wings etc, raw meaty bones, and other meats such as kangaroo are all examples of raw foods that are readily eaten by almost all dogs.
As you can see, there are a lot of options. Ultimately, what you feed your pet comes down to how much time you have to prepare your pet’s food and how it fits into your household budget. Be aware that the cheapest foods are often more costly in regard to your pet’s long term health. Talking to your vet, a knowledgeable dog breeder or qualified pet food advisor will help you solve the dog food dilemma.

Food Allergies in Animals Ok let’s start with a concise definition of an allergy: ‘A damaging response by the body to a substance, especially fur, particular food(s), dust or grass or insects, to which it has become hypersensitive.’ In this column I am going to concentrate on food allergies. You know you have an allergy on your hands when your dog thinks its name is “Stop Scratching!!!!” Pets with food allergies often scratch and bite incessantly especially around the anus area and on the back. These symptoms are also true of flea allergies, so it pays to have your pet on a strict regular flea and tick treatment to rule this one out. Other symptoms may include diarrhoea, inflammation of the ears and watery eyes (excess tears) and hot spots. If it’s not fleas, what next? Where do you start? An elimination diet is essential to identify which foods, preservatives or additives could be the problem. You must stop feeding your dog all treats and processed dry and canned foods, and put him on a fresh diet containing a protein source he’s never eaten and a single non-grain carbohydrate source. You will need help with this type of treatment, so please consult an animal nutritionist or a vet before starting any elimination diet. You must be very careful to make sure your pet is not missing any essential nutrients or you may cause even more problems. Over time, food stuffs are re- introduced and the pet is monitored for any signs of the allergic reaction. An elimination diet takes perseverance and dedication to get to the bottom of your pet’s discomfort, so no sneaky tit bits! It will be months, not days or weeks, before your pet is eating a variety of foods. The most common foods allergens for pets are proteins, preservatives and additives. These proteins can be animal or plant sourced. Additives and preservatives, both natural and artificial, are often found in commercial pet foods. A natural, fresh diet can help boost the immune system and eliminate the allergen. A bone a day keeps the vet away
Summer Tips with Dr Scott
DENTAL PROBLEMS ARE ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WE TAKE OUR DOGS TO THE VET. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT UP TO 85% OF DOGS OVER 3 YEARS SUFFER FROM GINGIVITIS (GUM INFLAMMATION). THE GOOD NEWS IS, YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
HEAT STROKE:
SEASONAL ALLERGIES:
With the temperatures rising it’s important to follow these tips to prevent your dog from heatstroke.
If your dog has been itching he may suffer from an allergy. Warmer weather can bring a variety of pollens and other allergens into your dog’s environment. If your dog suffers from skin infections or hair loss contact your local veterinarian.
Feeding appropriate raw meaty bones (never cooked) provides a natural mechanism for cleaning gums and teeth while satisfying your dog’s urge to chew. Raw bones also contain many nutrients that are essential to good health. Chewing on bones helps scrape teeth clean whilst tendons and ligaments on the bone act like ‘ dental floss’. By feeding bones regularly, you can help keep your dog’s teeth and gums in tip top shape!
A few tips to keep your dog safe during the summer months.
• DON’T keep your dog in the car • KEEP your dog hydrated • DON’T exercise during the hottest part of the day
BURNT PADS:
• KEEP your dog in a shady area if is left outside • KEEP their coats shorter in the hot months
QUOTE: If your dog is fat, you aren’t getting enough exercise. - Unknown
MUSHER Musher’s Secret is a dense, barrier wax made from a refined blend of food-grade waxes. It’s the safe, non-toxic way to protect your dog’s paws from salt and chemicals, ice build-up, sand and sandburn, hot pavement and rough terrain. The semipermeable shield is absorbed into the paws, allowing perspiration to escape through the toes.
SUNSCREEN Doggles dog sunscreen protects your dog’s sensitive skin and helps to prevent sun bleaching in dark haired animals. This SPF 15 sunscreen is non-toxic for pets, non-oily, non-irritating and water soluble. Spray on coat or skin. Perfect for light skinned dogs and the tip of cats ears.
• HAVE a cooling mat – they can decide when to lay on it or not • KEEP your dog away from direct sunlight if confined to a restricted space ensure it has plenty of air flow to help with evaporation and therefore cooling as the dog pants and provide plenty of cool water. PARASITES:
Is your dog up to date with flea, tick and parasite prevention? If not contact your local veterinarian for the best way to protect your dog.
Beware of burning your dogs’ pads. If a footpath or street is too hot it can potentially burn your dog’s paws. • Walk early morning or late afternoon • Check the footpath with your hand for 30 sec if you need to remove your hand it’s to HOT for your dog • Walk on grass. TOXINS:
Most lawn and garden products are hazardous. Make sure that plants and fertilizers within the dog’s reach are not toxic. WATER SAFETY:
Can your dog swim? If your not sure DON’T assume your dog can – some dogs can’t swim!
BEE STINGS:
Many dogs like snapping at insects including bees. Remove all beehives and wasp nests around your home to reduce the risk.
Test your dog in shallow waters. If your dog is one that can’t swim invest in a dog life jacket and you can still enjoy the waterside activities. Always supervise your dog in the water.

pet power! IF YOU OWN A PET THE CHANCES ARE YOU’RE FULLY AWARE THAT THE PLUSES FAR OUTWEIGH THE MINUSES. Sure there might be times when you want to pull your hair and occasionally you’re pet’s hair out, but by and large the soulful look on their face after a minor indiscretion, such as destroying all three backyard flower beds, melts the boiling wrath within. But you may be heartened to know that clinical research also supports the fact that pets really do bring very special benefits. A Baker Medical Research Institute study showed that pet owners had cholesterol levels 2% lower than those without pets. Not world shattering, but when you consider that this can lower your chances of having a heart attack by 4%, well worth considering. Pet owners also had lower levels of triglyceride fats in their blood and lower blood pressure. That doesn’t mean that if you have a pet you can rush out and have four tons of salt on the fish and chips and drink a bottle of scotch, but it is food for thought. Some of the other findings in recent surveys in the United States and the UK are also worthy of note, although most won’t come as any huge surprise. People who own dogs tend to exercise more and be more socially interactive. Being a conscientious dog owner means that at the very least you’ll take your dog for a walk once a day and probably twice. This is not only good for your general health, it also increases your chances of having a chat with other conscientious dog owners. Many old people live alone and their daily dog walks not only get them out of the house, they also increase
their opportunities to chat with neighbours and other pet owners. In fact a study of people walking in a park with and without dogs, showed that the people with dogs had longer conversations with more people than those without and you only have to observe the activity at any dog off leash area to realise that the people are enjoying their socialising as much as the dogs. For people who are lonely or just live alone this interaction is often vital and can seriously help ward off depression. However many elderly people refrain from taking on a pet because they’re worried about their pets’ care if they get sick and have to go to hospital. RSPCA Qld has introduced a program to assist elderly pet owners and/ or those coping with poor health. When hospitalisation is required and there is no one to look after the patient’s pets, RSPCA Qld may be able to help through their Pet Legacy Program. Through this Program, which has helped hundreds of people across Queensland, elderly folk can enjoy the companionship of animals, in their homes, right till the end. They can have peace of mind knowing that, should an emergency occur, the staff and volunteers from RSPCA Qld will be there to help and to care for their pets. In the event of the owner’s death, RSPCA Qld will ensure that the pets will go on to have the best possible quality of life with very carefully selected guardians.
Many nursing homes now have live in pets or animals that visit as part of a pet therapy program. All say that the pets tend to reduce the stress levels and that the patients are much calmer and less inclined to be irritable when the pets are there. Many moons back, my grandmother who could crack a “wobbly” of gargantuan proportions, was always soothed if I brought along our Airdale Trigger. (Named after Roy Rodgers’ horse, but that’s another story.) Even fish can have a calming effect. Watching fish swim can actually lower blood pressure and many doctors and dentists now have fish tanks in their waiting rooms. (Mental note: change dentist and find one with fish tank.) But perhaps one of the most interesting studies in Washington found that horse riding for the disabled led to improvements in language, coordination, work skills and self confidence. Parents of autistic children too have noted majority improvements in their children’s attention span and coordination after they bought a pet. In fact all children can gain enormous benefits from pet ownership. Pets help teach them a sense of responsibility and simple humanity. In fact it’s these very messages that RSPCA Qld’s Educational Mobile Unit (EMU) brings to thousands of school children, teachers and parents every year. Yes pets can – and do – make a difference! If you like more information about the RSPCA Qld’s Pet Legacy program you can visit the website or call Adriana Boron direct on 3426 9937

Thunderstorm season and dogs! Storm season in South East QLD is a worrying time when it comes to our canine friends and keeping them safe and well managed. Many shelters and council dog pounds are inundated with dogs on the loose after a storm has hit, without proper identification as to where they have come from. Our pets do require extra attention where there is a storm about to hit. Dogs are particularly sensitive to the noises of thunder and lightning and can soon become very stressed about the impending weather and the noises it brings. They can hear the storm a lot sooner than we can, so they start to display anxious behaviour early on - for example, biting at themselves, running around, barking, whimpering, and following you everywhere.
One of the most common behaviours is whimpering and trying to get as close to you as they can. Another is escaping, and if you don’t have your boundaries secure you will have a dog on the loose without road sense, which can lead to tragedy. Some breeds of dogs are more prone to escaping and being stressed than others, so read up about your breed and what to expect from them during times of stress. If you’re away from your home when a storm is looming, make sure that your dog has a secure space to take refuge in and feel safe. If you make these preparations before you leave for the day, you can be assured that he will be happier and safer during the storm. Plenty of fresh water, shelter and preferably a bed of some kind (although make sure he doesn’t rip it up during times of stress) will help your dog to feel more secure if you’re not able to be home. If you’re fortunate enough to be at home during the storm and your dog is displaying frantic or stressed behaviour, the best thing to do to is again make sure he is safe and secure. However, don’t make a fuss of him. If you try to console him, he’ll learn that it’s okay to feel insecure and unsure and he’ll repeat the behaviour each time a storm occurs. Over time, this behaviour will become more acute and harder to change. One of the best things you can do for your dog during a storm is to make it fun and play games, or get him out in it so he starts to associate it with fun and activity. Even taking your dog out walking and running on a lead with you in the storm can help him desensitise to the weather and lessen the chance of phobias developing.
SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR DOG CALM DURING A STORM ARE:
• Make sure your house boundaries are secure and there is no risk of your dog being able to escape by digging under, jumping over or ripping a fence down. • Keep your dog well managed and secure during the storm, making sure there is plenty of fresh water available, as stressed dogs will drink more. • Have up to date identification on your dog, whether it be a microchip or collar tag so that if your dog does escape (let’s hope not!), he can be easily returned home to you. • Start a game, go for a walk or make things fun for your dog while there is a storm developing to make it a positive experience for him. • When your dog has settled straight after or even during the storm, heap lots of praise on him so that you’re reinforcing his calm behaviour and rewarding him for behaving this way. • Build on your dog’s trust with you by doing some obedience regularly with him, so when times are stressful he will look to you for direction. The more he trusts you, the more he will follow you and listen to you in times of need.
Just remember to keep your dog healthy and happy and enjoy your relationship with him, and he will look up to you and respect you.

The Dog Blog with Trainer Nic
My name is Nicola Anderson and I run The Dog Blog, a service which provides in-home behavioural expertise and online help and support throughout the process with the help of my two dogs, Pepper and Lochie. Our business specialise in helping families overcome behaviour problems that occur with their four legged friend and get the communication and manners back on track to ensure peace and harmony in the home. I have had over 25 years experience with dogs covering many different areas and all methods are extremely gentle and positive for both owner and their beloved canine. Trainer Nics specialty is mums with dogs and kids with dogs, these areas are all too common with issues arising with new pups and/or mature dogs that are getting used to a new baby into the family or young children and when parents just want everyone to get along. We can help you with pulling on lead, jumping up, meeting and greeting, barking, anxiety of many kinds, new puppies settling into the home, in depth puppy schools, private obedience lessons covering any topic you want to achieve and that’s only the start of the services Nic and The Dog Blog offers. If you have any questions that needs answering, please drop me a line at training@puppylovemagazine.com.au and I can help you out.
Treats and why they are a good training tool I always recommend owners using treats as rewards especially when starting out as we need something ultra exciting and fun for the dog to want to respond. Over time, the treats can be weened off, but initially they are particularly helpful. I suggest that when you are using treats you keep to using ones that are very natural and plain, not high in preservatives or colourings and something that is easy to break up into very small pieces as you don’t need a lot to get your dog interested. From young pups through to mature age/senior dogs treats are a great way to teach manners with giving and receiving things from the owners and kids hands as well as knowing the dog will want to respond if there is something extra yummy involved once the dog has earnt the reward. Once you have had success with using treats, try to then only give them every second or third time the dog responds and fill the other times for reward in with a vocal praise and this sets us up to slowly ween the treats away. The eventual goal is to have the dog respond to you because it wants to without using treats, but they are great to get you started on the right track to training positively and communicating well with your dog.
SOME QUESTIONS I HAVE HAD IN THE PAST:
training
Do you have a dog that needs to learn manners and how to be a well behaved doggy, making you feel anxious about what will come next from your dogs behaviour when you have people coming to your home and saying hello when you are out and about? I can help you!
Q
Hi, we got our German Shephard only recently and every time I take him out walking he lunges and barks at everyone, once he meets them he settles down, but how can I get this under control?
A
Some simple training using correct equipment will get you a long way with this problem. We want your dog to listen to you when out and about and greeting, and there is light at the end of the tunnel. You need to let your dog know you are in charge when out walking.
Q
I have a new puppy and 3 young children under the age of 8, they are not getting on very well and we are getting a lot of nipping and biting that I need to sort out, please help us!
A
This is a common problem that can be fixed easily without any harsh techniques, you need to create boundaries and discipline in the household for the new puppy so it learns who it needs to listen to and respect. Also, with your puppy teething, it’s important to provide as much as possible to chew on to relieve this, making sure that the chew things are dog designed and safe.
ARE YOU PEE’D OFF ROUTINELY? GET HELP WITH RUFUS & COCO WEE AWAY
Frustrated by your dog peeing in the same spot? You continue to clean it up, trying different solutions in the hope of solving the issue? It’s a common problem. Dogs have an acute sense of smell, and if the accident is not removed, the lingering scent is a strong trigger for re-offence. For the same reason, it is important not to use cleaning products containing ammonia, an ingredient in urine. Many products fail to remove stains and the smell. Wee Away, a unique product does both. Professionally formulated and Australian made.

Feeling “full of beans” and emotional, your darling doggie will ready for lots of loving. Communication will be high on their agenda, so don’t be surprised if your smoochy pooch is extra talkative or expressive. Something interesting is happening either in the backyard, or over the fence, that is keeping them entertained.
If your furry friend is looking a little confused, it maybe that they have hidden something they can’t find, but it will eventually turn up. Feeling a little restless or energized, your lovely canine will be trying to coax you into extra walks or more fun quality time together.
Your canine charmer may be acting a little quieter or shy than usual and in need of some additional reassurance and affection. But that doesn’t mean you are off the hook when it comes to playtime though. They will be inventive, and persuasive, trying to get some space on the couch or bed.

New love or friendship will have your doggie feeling exuberant, and eager to get back to that doggie park to mingle. Happiness also arrives in the form of a new toy. You may find your fun-loving furball daydreaming about the object of their affection. Nothing like a bit of puppy love!
Your wonderful woofer may be feeling that someone has crossed into their territory and not too happy about it. You may need to reassure them. Be generous with extra cuddles, but you may need to set new guidelines. It won’t take long before your furry companion will be feeling super-special again!
With social gatherings at your own place, or in the neighbourhood, tantalizing scents will prove irresistible. If the food temptations are not at your house, make sure they don’t go looking. If the fun is at home, you may find a sausage goes missing! Your doggie friend is in party mode!
Ready to do a little exploring, your furry companion is longing to snuffle new places, nose to the grass and flowers. You might need to be creative to find a suitable destination or game to satisfy their urge for nature. Your doggie friend will feel especially happy after discovering something fascinating.

Outside noises or activities may be distracting or concerning your gorgeous pooch. Perhaps they know you have plans, someone has moved into the neighbourhood, or they have heard on the doggie grapevine that things are happening. Sitting still may be harder than normal because they want to be where the action is.
Your little person in a doggie suit is a bit tired. Maybe life has been a bit too hectic or their sleep patterns are a little out. Give them some quiet time in a comfortable spot, plenty of love and fun, and they will be right as rain in no time.
Totally unique and lovable would describe your sweet doggie, and during this cycle, they will show others how very special they are. Another person or animal will fall for their distinctive charms and be healed by their fun, caring nature. Though your beautiful dog only has eyes for you and your family.
Your playful pooch will be surprised by something that happens nearby, feeling the urge to check out further details. They don’t mean to be nosey but they like to know more to make sure you and the family are safe. Their wag will return quickly when they see you are okay.
