Simon & Garfunkel T H E M U S E S N OT T H E M U S OS

Bulldogs may not be the most likely of muses but photographer Serena Hodson sees the beauty in the beasts. Serena’s quirky images of her bulldogs Simon and Garfunkel (G-Funk) have earned her a loyal following.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just ask photographer Serena Hodson and her enthusiastic fan base who can’t get enough of Serena’s pets, Simon (British bulldog) and Garfunkel (French bulldog), and their antics in front of the camera. “I’ve always had an infatuation w ith bulldogs,” Serena says. “I became Simon’s human around six years ago and I’ll never forget picking him up from the breeders. He was about six months old and as soon as he was let out of his bed and saw me standing at the gate he ran straight over. He jumped in the car and never looked back — I didn’t hear a peep from him the whole eight-hour drive back to Brisbane.” G -Funk joined the family around t wo-and-a-half years ago and they got on in an awk ward sort of way, despite Simon’s ‘So when is he leav ing?’ sideways glances. “Simon is an absolute darling but a ver y eccentric old soul,” Serena says. “He’s the absolute master of a f ifthly look. He can be walking past you, stop in his tracks, f lick you this look of absolute disg ust, and then be on his merr y way. I’ve heard bulldogs are the only breed that can make you feel g uilt y for absolutely no reason.

“If there’s a camera around, Simon is on it like white on rice. I remember one shoot, when I was working w ith Simon and G -Funk’s buddy Henri (Dachshund) and Simon wanted to be the star. He kept photo-bombing and I had to have f irm words w ith him about stay ing out of the shots. “A fter a while I noticed he wasn’t around and, when I went to look for him, I found him sulking in the shower. I’m prett y sure if he could talk his words would’ve been ‘Nobody puts Baby in the corner!’. He wouldn’t look at me for hours after wards. He can be a real diva.” Serena started out as a graphic designer and hav ing an eye for design has given her photos an edge in terms of composition. Her Dr y Dog Wet Dog photo series turned heads and her new book, Upside Dow n Dogs, is set to do the same. “My v ision for this book is to capture the delight and joy of dogs in an upside dow n pose. Their facial expressions offer an antidote to human stress, which should be bottled and sold as medication,” Serena says. “This angle on dogs is original in publishing, yet familiar to anyone who lives w ith a dog.” The book is releasing October 17 and w ill be available online and in bookstores.

“Occasionally Simon might drop his standards and have a small play w ith G -Funk – when this actually happens, for Garfunkel, it’s the best day of his life.” In front of the camera, Simon and Garfunkel are a team making music in pictures and Serena has made a name for herself on an international scale by capturing them in action. “My favourite image would have to be Simon and G -funk challenging each other in Monopoly. They are both f iercely competitive when it comes to hav ing their photo taken and the look they’re giv ing each other captures their relationship so perfectly,” Serena says.

BOUTIQUE DOG MAGAZINE ISSUE 02 | 9

For those readers hoping Serena can be hired to take photos of their pets, the news is promising. “It’s not something I’m offering right now but I do have some plans in the future for this ser v ice,” she says. “My dogs inspire me ever yday. They are pure comedy and make me laugh all of the time. No doubt this is the same for countless others and I can understand their desire to capture their dogs’ personalities for all time.”

For those considering adopting a bulldog or Daschund, Serena says doing your research to f ind ethical breeders is essential. “There are far too many back yard breeders tr y ing to make quick money off these breeds,” she says. “Find those breeders doing the right thing and research the breed standards. A nd remember to look at rescue. There are a lot of wonderful dogs out there needing homes.”

But even the most outgoing of dogs have their dow n days, so what does Serena do when ‘the talent’ aren’t in the mood to put their best paw for ward? “Cheese is what I f ind works the best, but I tr y to limit the amount they get per shoot,” Serena says.“Luckily Simon and G -Funk’s buddy Henri would work off the smell of an oily rag. He’s a super easy-going happy little g uy, so he’s slotted in just f ine. As long as Henri plays by the bulldogs’ rules they’re a tight little crew.”

W hile Simon and G -Funk weren’t named after the A merican folk rock duo whose music blew audiences away in the 1960s, Serena is fond of a particular quote by A rt Garfunkel — ‘Ever y thing worth doing starts w ith being scared’. “ W hen you put yourself out there as an artist you never know what response to expect,” Serena says.

As for Garf, he’s always up to something… “I would describe Garf as a ver y busy little man. He’s full of conf idence and is never too far from my side, which is a t y pical trait of French Bulldogs,” Serena says.

“One of my favourite say ings is ‘to avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing’. I’m a big believer in venturing out of your comfort zone.”

“I love photographing dogs because they have no hangups – they don’t put on an act, they don’t complain about an unf lattering photo and, most of all, they make me happy – how could you not want to work w ith them? I think I have the best job in the world.”

Winter Tips with Dr Jo Winter Grooming Tips What is Golden Paste? Interactive Toy Coconut Oil - Cure or Croc?

BOUTIQUE DOG MAGAZINE ISSUE 02 | 15

Winter Tips with Dr Jo

Brrrr, it’s starting to get to that cold part of the year. Just as we feel chilly as temperatures drop, so do our canine best buddies. While dogs vary enormously in size and shape as well as the length and thickness of their coats, following these general tips will help ensure we all have a happy and healthy winter.

Protect ion f rom the ele me nts

Grooming

• DO prov ide a safe sleeping space that is protected from rain, w ind and the cold ground. For dogs who spend some time outdoors, this means a padded, raised bed in a fully protected location.

We sometimes forget about grooming in w inter but it’s really important. Reg ular brushing removes tangles and mats that can cause discomfort and allow us to spot any skin issues or sore areas early.

• DO snuggle up indoors together — if that’s what your pooch enjoys. Some love nothing more than running amok outside in the mud.

Ar thr it i s

• DON’T be afraid of dogg y clothing. A warm jacket can make a big difference to how much heat a dog loses. This is especially important for ver y small dogs, those w ith short coats or ver y little body fat and the golden oldies.

DO keep an eye on your dog’s body weight. A n over weight dog puts more pressure on painful joints.

DO prov ide a comfortable, padded bed that is easy to get in and out of.

DO speak to your vet about options including nutritional supplements and medications to help ease pain.

DON’T ever use human medications for dogs.

DON’T stop exercising just because it’s cold or wet. Moderate, reg ular exercise at a level that suits your dog is important for mobilit y.

A rthritis is a common aff liction, particularly for our senior friends, but it can strike any dog.

D ietar y con s ide rat ion s A dog’s nutritional needs are likely to change during the w inter months. • For those active outdoor t y pes who are constantly racing around in the cold, nutritional requirements may increase because keeping warm out there burns energ y. • For the couch potatoes who love the cold months because it means less exercise and more rainy days snuggled in front of the f ire, nutritional needs may decrease because they’re nice and warm and not doing a whole lot of any thing!

Exercise during the colder months It’s really important to keep up the exercise even when the weather is miserable and we don’t really feel like it. You can pop on a raincoat or grab an umbrella and brave the great outdoors for a walk or a play in the park. If it’s just too miserable outside it’s always an option to stay safely indoors and practice a little bit of trick training. W hy not hide some treats around the house for a fun hunting game or just play together?

Ge ne ral health Being cold puts extra stress on bodies. This can reduce immune function and make getting sick more likely, especially for puppies and old dogs or those w ith other existing illnesses. Keep a close eye on your four-legged friends over the colder months. If you notice any changes in appetite, thirst, energ y levels, behav iour, or any thing that is a bit out of the ordinar y, a v isit to your vet is in order.

Winter Grooming Tips WITH ERIN F R O M A LO HA HOU ND www.facebook.com/alohahound

Winter is here and with it the colder weather and shorter days but this doesn’t mean your fur baby can go longer without a haircut. Your pet needs just as much attention in the cooler months as any other time of the year. Follow Erin’s winter grooming guide to keep your doggies detangled, fresh and content.

Clipping the feet, face, belly & bot tom A lthough it’s w inter, it’s still important to keep your best friend clean and well-maintained so they are happy and comfortable. Reg ular grooming under the paws, the belly and groin, around the bottom and in bet ween the eyes w ill keep them feeling fresh.

Reg ular war m wa shes & blo w- dr ies Your best friend still needs to be bathed at least ever y fortnight. Keep their skin, paws and coat clean and remove any loose malting hair from the shorter breeds. A warm shampoo and blow-dr y is also a great way to avoid them getting too cold.

Don’t forget to br u sh Brushing of the coat w ill increase blood f low and keep your dog healthy. Get rid of any moulting hair — for the f luff ier pups, this w ill keep them tangle-free and comf y in the cooler months and avoid matting and knots. If you are putting jumpers on your fur babies, brushing is necessar y ever y day.

Kee p it s mooth & sleek W hy not keep the hair st yle smooth and sleek? Continue w ith your reg ular grooming and pop on a cute jumper. Fashionable sweaters are perfect for shorter coats. You can keep them well-maintained and warm and a shorter haircut means more cuddles!

Kee p the ir paws and nail s in g reat condit ion Nail trimming and f iling is essential so that your dog is comfortable. Reg ular nail trims w ill keep them nice and short.

Coconut Oil,

Cure or Croc?

WO R DS D R C L A I R E J E N K I NS

W hat do we kno w about coconut oil? It’s a source of fat that is rich in medium chain fatt y acids and well know n to have properties that are:

management plan for dogs affected w ith CD. Note that CD needs to be diagnosed by your veterinarian after ruling out several other conditions that can cause similar signs.

1. anti-inf lammator y

6.Intestinal Disease

2 . antibacterial

Coconut oil is easily absorbed by the g ut and is claimed to be healing for the g ut lining ( but note below where it can also cause diarrhoea).

3 . antiv iral, and... 4 . anti-fungal

W hat do we kno w about coconut oil u se in cats and dogs? Unfortunately, we know ver y little. Veterinarians who use coconut oil therapeutically do so based on anecdotal ev idence from their ow n or others’ experiences that it has been effective in treating a range of ailments. Commonly applied to the skin, it can also be given orally in food but there is no know n effective dosage amount. Generally, the doses used are small and not by the tablespoon — it’s commonly about 1/8th of a teaspoon daily for a small dog and up to 1 teaspoon or a little more daily for a large-breed dog.

Pote nt ial proble m s w ith coconut oil: These problems are because there’s a lot of fat in coconut oil —around 14g in 1 tablespoon. 1. Diarrhoea Especially if large amounts are given. 2 . Pancreatitis We know that one of the possible triggers for pancreatitis is when a large amount of fat is eaten, so coconut oil could be one. 3 . Weight Gain. Enough said!

Pote nt ial u ses for coconut oil: 1. Dr y Skin There’s no doubt that it’s moisturising. It can be sparsely used on dr y skin or even on a dr y nose. 2 . Itchy Skin Many testimonials claim that, when taken w ith food, it can help w ith itch and allergies and even reduce the incidence of secondar y infections when applied directly (thanks to the antibacterial and anti-fungal properties). 3 . Minor Skin Infections This oil may speed up healing when used on top of ver y minor skin infections. 4 . A rthritis Taken in food its anti-inf lammator y properties may help w ith arthritis; however, we know that other oils (such as f ish oils) are a much better choice for this. 5. Brain Health The medium chain fatt y acids are great food for the brain. Senior dogs can suffer from a condition know n as Cognitive Dysfunction (CD), which includes many behav ioural changes that are secondar y to abnormal brain function. Coconut oil can be part of the overall

4 . Food Aversion in Cats Many cats don’t like the taste of it, so when it’s mixed in their food they may opt to avoid that food altogether. Over time this can result in weight loss.

My thou ghts? This food fad is not the panacea however, that said, just because it doesn’t cure all doesn’t mean it isn’t good for some things. Coconut oil could be good for certain conditions in dogs, prov ided the potential benef its out weigh the potential problems in indiv iduals. I wouldn’t be giv ing this to cats because of the potential food aversion as they dislike its taste. Veterinar y adv ice absolutely should be sought f irst before deciding on supplementation w ith coconut oil for your best mate. Vetchat is your pet’s ne w best f r iend! Snow much fun Sure, they’re a little shaggier than reindeer but they pull a sled just as well. The 51-strong pack of dogs that call Howling Huskys near Mt Hotham home are ready to put the go, go, go in your ho, ho, ho experience of mushing through the snow.

WO R DS: K Y L I E DAV IS I M AG E S: H OW L I N G H U S K YS

feature Picture this. You’re rugged up under furs with your partner, leaning back in a sled pulled by a team of wintery-white huskies. Nothing but the sound of the huskies breathing and the ‘whoosh’ of the sled as it glides through the snow breaks the silence. Bliss.

During the ski season (June to September), Jake and his partner Kiri run sledding tours at Mount Hotham A lpine Resort, Jindaby ne A lpine Village and Mt Baw Baw A lpine Resort, which are only a few hours from Melbourne and well worth the v isit.

From 15-minute rides, to half-day tours complete w ith a campf ire w ine, there’s a Howling Husk y Sled Dog Tour to suit you. Oh and we haven’t mentioned the best bit yet… at the end of the tour, you get to pat and cuddle the huskies, many of whom w ill f lop on their backs begging for a belly rub. Joy!

“Luckily we live up in the high countr y and our closest neighbour is about 4 .5 kilometres away.”

“A lot of people think working dogs or wolf-looking dogs are aggressive but huskies are one of the oldest domesticated breeds we have and they’re fantastic w ith people,” says ow ner of Howling Husk y Sled Dog Tours Jake Greaves.

“A retriever-cross snuck into the kennels and I didn’t know any thing about it until we had puppies w ith f loppy ears instead of stand-up ones like huskies,” Jake says.

“They way they stare right through you w ith those ice-blue eyes… They’re a beautiful breed.” Looking at Jake’s dogs now, and how happy and healthy they are, you’d never g uess many of them are rescue dogs. “One of my boys, Lee, was bounced around 16 different homes before he came to us, and that’s not including the pounds or foster carers who had him,” Jake says. “Siberian huskies are one of the most surrendered breeds in Australia because people look at them and they’re so appealing but they don’t realise they’re a full-on working dog. Some huskies w ill just pace the back yard because they’ve got so much drive to work. Here, we harness them up and give them a way to burn off all that energ y. “A ll the dogs that come and work for me are my pets f irst, so they’re all family, and when it comes to retirement time they stay right here w ith me.”

“The dogs can feel when there’s a cold front coming and they start howling w ith excitement,” Jake says.

One of Jake’s dogs isn’t a husk y… but don’t tell him that. Wicket, who has his ow n Facebook page, is the result of a late-night undercover rendezvous.

“ W hat’s funny is that Wicket remembers ever y morning that snow is actually cold and he doesn’t have a fur coat like the others. He dives into the snow, rolls around in it and then shakes it all off and looks at you like he’s frozen. So when he’s f inished making puppy snow angels, we brush him off and put on his jacket.” So does that mean any dog can be a sledding dog? “Yes, just about any dog can be a sled dog if they have the heart and love the game,” Jake says. “ Wicket was born into it, so it’s all he knows. He’s got the same coat as an English pointer but we don’t have the heart to tell him he’s not a husk y.” Before snow season, the huskies pull tours on wheeled buggies instead of blades. W hile, in the summer months, they wow crowds at shows by hauling buggies loaded w ith dog kibble. They’re also popular for prov iding a f lash ride to school formals and weddings, where they know how to make a grand entrance.

“...at Carol s by Candlelight, the hu skies g ive the re indee r a break and br ing Santa in .”

“ We do up the buggies so they look like grand chariots,” Jake says. “A nd at Carols by Candlelight, the huskies give the reindeer a break and bring Santa in.” Next summer, Jake and Kiri would also like to open up their home and kennels so people can come and see how the dogs live and how they train them.

“If I go away for a few days, there’s a special song they sing when I come home. It’s a prett y good feeling. To have them sing a song because they’re excited to see me. “That’s why I love rescuing so many dogs — that bond you form w ith them from taking them on and working w ith them. The appreciation they have. They know they’re in a good spot now and they’re settled and happy, which makes me happy.”

“ We’ve got so many loveable characters here, like Loki and Rox y who are totally in love w ith each other,” Jake says. “They’re both desexed, so nothing happens there, but if we put them in a sled team next to each other, all they do is f lirt!” Jake’s bond w ith the dogs is so strong that he can tell what they’re thinking just by the sound of their voices. “ W hen I’m in the house, if any of the dogs make a sound I can tell who is carr y ing on and what it’s about,” Jake says. “ You can tell what’s happening outside just by the reaction of the dogs. They have different songs for ever y thing. Sometimes they’re just singing because they’re happy, other times there’s something that’s disturbing them, like somebody coming up the road who is different.” But the best song of all is the one the dogs have that’s just for Jake.

W hat do your dogs do while you’re at work?

W hat can you tell us about I Can See Dog Car Seats?

In summer, they lie under the fan on their beds. In w inter, they curl up on their cozy blankets. Once, when we went away to Europe about four years ago, our house sitter let Jack get up on the dining room table. Jack now has a dog bed on the dining table so he can enjoy looking out. Being so tiny (three kilograms), he loves to be up high.

When Helen Mccallum couldn’t find a dog car seat that offered the creature comforts (and safety) she was looking for, she took matters into her own hands.

They came about in 2010 when I had three small dogs and there were no dog car seats available here in Australia that I would’ve even considered putting my dogs in. I decided to look into making one and that was the start of the I Can See Dog Car Seat. W hat do you love most about your job? Being able to work from home and getting emails and photos from clients say ing how much they and their dogs love the seats.

How does being a dog owner make you a better businessperson? I couldn’t imagine not hav ing a dog in my life. W hen we lost Bella so suddenly to cancer 15 months ago I was like a crazy woman searching the rescue sites. I thought that if I had to lose Bella, I must be meant to rescue another dog and prov ide it w ith a lov ing home. I think Lillie is ver y glad I found her.

W hat is a t ypical work day like for you? There’s always something to keep me busy, whether it’s answering emails, doing quotes, sourcing fabric or boxing up seats to send. W hat are your top three tips for dog car safet y? A lways secure your dog w ith a harness and seatbelt attachment. Never leave your dog unattended in the car Never have the w indow ver y far dow n or allow your dog to hang out the w indow. W hat has been your most satisf ying accomplishment since starting I Can See Dog Car Seats? Hearing that the seat has helped w ith motion sickness or the dogs’ behav iour in the car. I love receiv ing all the great photos of the dogs in their seats. I’ve also prov ided seats for disabled dogs and love seeing them respond to seeing the v iew for the f irst time. W hat do you want to achie ve in the next year? To keep grow ing the business and changing the fabrics I offer so the seats are always new and different. The dogs behind the business: Jack, Chi x Toy Poodle, 10. Sook y, Jack Russell x Maltese, 8. Lillie, Maltese x Poodle, 4 How did you f ind your dogs? Jack and his sister Bella, who sadly passed away 15 months ago, were purchased from a pet shop before we were aware of puppy farms. Lillie and Sook y are both rescues — Sook y from A nimal Welfare Leag ue Queensland and Lillie from Friends of the RSPCA in Gladstone, Queensland. How have your dogs inspired your business? A ll my dogs love being pampered and love their comf y st ylish seats.

Piggy, Polly & Pipolli are the three P’s, who I’m sure you’ve heard of if you’re a dog or frenchie lover.

Pigg y and Polly have worked w ith several famous brands like Target, Volvo, Movado, West Elm, W Hotels, West Elm, Jimmy Choo and others.

The t wo cute french bulldog sisters Pigg y & Polly are capturing the hearts of people around the world w ith their sweet personalities and adorably designed fashion and decor from their dogg y momma Carla Schwabe, the designer of Pipolli.

Pipolli products were ver y well received and we are proud to have happy customers all over the world. We also have some cool boutiques and even big retailers like Free People carr y ing our products.

Pipolli dog products designed w ith a blend of simplicit y and st yle are inspired by the minimalism of Scandinav ian design. Carla has successfully brought her t wo passions together – her love of dogs and modern design and creativ it y. Puppy Love posed some questions to Carla and shared some Puppy Love w ith the girls, Pigg y and Polly.

Take us back to where it all began. W hich P came f irst – Pig g y, Polly or Pipolli? Pigg y came f irst. She is 5 years old and Polly is 3 . How did Pig g y cope when Polly came along? Does sibling r ivalr y exist bet ween the t wo dogs? Pigg y always loved other dogs and she was the reason we got Polly. They got along ver y well since day 1. W hat is an average day like in the Schwabe family household? Walk in the mornings w ith Pigg y & Polly, work and qualit y family time at night. Do Pig g y & Polly love being Instafamous? And has it changed your family’s life? They def initely love all the attention they can get. We live in a small beach tow n in South Florida and love when people recognize them. W hat has been the highlight for Pig g y & Polly so far? Also, what has been the highlight for Pipolli?

W hat are the positives to Instafame? Have the opportunit y to work w ith cool brands and meet great people that share the same passion for dogs as me. Are there any negatives? Not for us. Your desig ns are beautiful. Tell us how Pig g y & Polly inspire your brand. I want to create products w ith great design and that Pigg y & Polly (and all other dogs) would truly enjoy. The clothes are st ylish, yet ver y comfortable to them. The teepees are the perfect dog day bed and are a charming addition to any room. W hat’s your bestselling product? W hy do you think it’s so popular? The striped dog teepee. It was the ver y f irst product I launched and still is the best selling item. I think it’s popular because it’s the kind of product that makes dogs and humans happy. Do you have ne w desig ns in de velopment? If so, can you g ive us a sneak peek? I’m always researching new ideas and I’m hoping to launch more products in the future. W hat does the future hold for Pig g y & Polly and Pipolli? I hope to continue making people smile w ith Pigg y & Polly’s pictures and w ith our products inspired by them. Carla has achie ved her goals of putting smiles on dog and human faces all over the world, thanks to her desig ns – and of course, Pig g y & Polly.

10 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW A BOUT GREYHOUNDS Greyhounds as pets – you can’t go past them! While you’re more likely these days to see greyhounds living the pet life instead of just on the race track, there are still a lot of misconceptions about this wonderful breed. Here’s a list of 10 things most people don’t know about these gentle giants. 1. They are ver y lazy dogs Ever y greyhound adopter has heard this from a stranger: “Oh, he / she must need a lot of exercise.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Greyhounds may be the fastest dogs in the world, but they are also often referred to as the laziest. They are sprinters, not marathon runners, and spend most of the day sleeping. They might do a zoomie when they feel like play ing, but other w ise only need a nice gentle walk for socialising, sniff ing and stealing pats from passing strangers.

2 . They are one of the least aggressive dogs in the world A 2008 study of over 30 breeds found that greyhounds are one of the least aggressive breeds towards humans and other dogs. The misconception that greyhounds are v icious usually stems from imager y of muzzled dogs on the track. You may have also seen muzzled pet greyhounds. This is because some local councils still have old laws requiring muzzles for all greyhounds – not because the breed actually is considered dangerous by experts. Fortunately, muzzling laws are being phased out in most places as breed-specif ic legislation is increasingly recognised as unscientif ic.

3 . Some can share a home with small animals W hile most greyhounds have a natural prey drive and chase instinct, which is encouraged and rewarded when they are trained to race, they are not innately aggressive. More often than not, greyhound adopters describe them as gentle, affectionate and patient w ith children and other dogs. Some are even able to live safely w ith cats, chickens and g uinea pigs. Just like any other breed, it depends on the indiv idual dog’s personalit y and experiences.

4 . They are great apartment dogs Many people assume that greyhounds, being a large breed, require a large yard for exercise and roaming. In realit y, greyhounds are one of the best breeds for apartment liv ing because they are low-energ y dogs who rarely bark and shed ver y little compared to other breeds. As long as they get their usual daily walks for exercise and socialising, they are happy to sleep away the day on the couch.

muzzles. They also rarely develop hip dysplasia, a condition common in most large breed dogs.

W hile greyhounds in Australia are bred solely for the purpose of racing, they have the potential for so much more! As greyhound adoption increases, more and more people are realising how sensitive and smart these dogs are regardless of their racing abilit y. Greyhounds have successfully qualif ied as Delta Therapy Dogs, v isiting schools and hospitals to bring joy to those who need it most; Smar t Pups, assistance dogs who help special needs children gain independence and conf idence; and mindDogs, ser v ice dogs who help adults w ith severe anxiet y and fear allev iate the effects of their disabilit y.

Ex-racing greyhounds frequently have bad teeth when they are f irst rescued, but this is not due to genetics. It is usually caused by a poor diet and lack of maintenance by their racing ow ners. Some rescue groups may send a foster dog for a full dental check and clean prior to adoption, but often this is too expensive to perform as a standard procedure. If you have adopted a greyhound w ith terrible teeth, a professional clean by your vet, good diet and daily brushing w ill go a long way in maintaining their oral health.

6. They are so giving that they are universal donors Greyhounds are the universal blood donors of the canine world. Their blood has a higher red blood cell count and lower white blood cell and platelet count compared to other dogs. This means that their blood can be used in transfusions for other sick or injured dogs w ithout a reaction. Unfortunately, this unique trait has been abused by racing participants seeking to get rid of their greyhounds. The A BC reported in 2013 that the practice of bleeding greyhounds to death was appallingly common as a form of disposal for unwanted race dogs.

7. They don’t have a dogg y smell, so you don’t need to bath them often Greyhounds produce ver y little oil on their fur, so they don’t produce the t y pical ‘dogg y smell’ that causes most of us to reach for the A loveen. This means that unless they get dirt y while play ing in the mud or ly ing dow n in a muck y place, you w ill rarely need to give them a bath. Their short coat also means that daily grooming is not a necessit y – though most greyhounds would appreciate the pampering!

8. They are one of the healthiest dogs in the world Greyhounds are not bred to be any thing but fast sprinters, which means they do not have any congenital issues such as respirator y problems associated w ith shortened

9. You will start speaking a new language once you adopt one Have you welcomed a greyhound into your family? Congratulations! You are now part of the greyhound cult. You’ll f ind that as you settle into life as a member of the greyhound adopter communit y, your vocabular y w ill expand organically to include breed-specif ic terms like zoomies, roaching, GSOD and so on (see The Greyhound Glossar y for more). You w ill also f ind yourself purchasing a ridiculous number of collars and coats for your dog and telling people, “A ll the proceeds go to greyhound rescue, so it’s really a donation. You should buy one too!”

10. They are all unique as pets Most greyhounds don’t live like pets while they are race dogs; often they live in kennels or paddocks w ith little human interaction throughout the day. This is completely different to liv ing in a home w ith other pets, small children and cuddles. Some greyhounds take to pet life like ducks to water and settle in w ithin days, while others might be shier and take more time to come out of their shell. This is why foster carers are so important. Greyhound rescues need experienced dog ow ners who can show greyhounds the ropes of pet life and introduce them to other kinds of animals, new social situations and scar y things like vacuum cleaners. If you can foster, please contact your local greyhound rescue to volunteer your help.

5. They are intelligent and learn fast, and can be retrained as assistance dogs

GRE Y HOUND ASSISTA NCE DOGS Here are some of the dogs helping to prove that greyhounds are capable of so much more than chasing a lure on track.

TESSA – MINDDOG A SSISTA NCE DOG Tessa is an accredited assistance dog who helps her adopter Barbara to access the communit y by assisting her w ith balance and mobilit y issues and the associated anxiet y. She is also ver y intuitive and can detect and alert Barbara to sudden drops in her blood pressure. These sudden drops would, w ithout Tessa’s assistance, cause Barbara to fall and injure herself. “I initially felt that I had rescued Tessa,” said Barbara. “However, I now wholeheartedly believe that Tessa has actually rescued me. Tessa is not just my faithful, lov ing companion and the delight of my life. She is a ver y special hound who has signif icantly improved my qualit y of life.”

JACK – DELTA CLA SSROOM CA NINE Jack v isits Tow nsv ille Primar y School reg ularly to help improve schoolchildren’s conf idence, health and wellbeing, and helping schools encourage their students’ overall development. Jack’s adopter, Emma Smith, said, “He had to pass an extra assessment to be part of the Classroom Canines program, where he was tested w ith children and a classroom env ironment. MINNIE – SM A RT PUP Minnie was adopted by Jennifer Douglas at a time when her nine-year-old daughter Celeste, w ith a diagnosis of autism, was struggling to cope w ith life. Jennifer approached Smart Pups to train Minnie as an assistance dog for Celeste and she became their trial dog for Smart Pups’ Greyhound pilot program. “It usually takes up to 18 months to train a dog from the puppy stage. It took Minnie, a mature dog, roughly six months,” said Jennifer. “There is a special something bet ween Minnie and Celeste that is hard to explain. It is more than love, it is an understanding. With Minnie by her side, Celeste has a new found conf idence that enables her to tackle the little things in life that we all take for granted.” Minnie and Celeste’s stor y has now been turned into a book, called A Journey of Love. See w w w.gof undme.com/ A Journeyof LoveBook for more details.

A Sprinkle of Love WO R DS & I M AG E S: A N G I E K E N T

Meet Angie and Yvie from Network Ten’s Gogglebox Australia. The best friends and housemates adore their four-legged companions, who make regular appearances watching TV with their humans. How long have you been housemates? We’ve lived together for three years now with a man named Tom, who has Down Sy ndrome. You’re obviously big dog fans…? We started off volunteering our home and our care to look after dogs that needed temporar y living arrangements while their owners were in hospital or dealing with personal matters. A fter a while it turned into more permanent arrangements and now we help run Paws and Recover, which is a not-for-prof it animal rescue agency based in Sydney. We foster and rescue dogs from all over the countr y and can have any where between two and f ive rescue pooches at a time on top of Yvie’s adopted Pomeranian babies Leo and Oscar. W hat have dogs taught you about life? Dogs are genuinely man and woman’s best friends. Yvie and I have always said that we prefer the company of our foster babies to most humans (sorr y humans). They don’t judge, they live in the moment, they’re always so excited to see you and ever yday is THE BEST DAY EV ER with them. It really makes you appreciate life.

W hat’s the best thing about having a dog around? How much they make you laugh. We’re in constant f its of laughter telling each other what one of the foster dogs has done. Prett y much ever y single one of our dogs, or rescue dogs, has a nickname. We might make up a special song about them or put on a voice that we think would suit them if they could talk (yes we’re nuts). How would you descr ibe your dogs’ personalities? Leo is the oldest, coming in at 15 this year, and he’s one of the craziest old men I’ve ever come across. He’s deaf and almost completely blind and has chilled out a lot more but, my God, he still knows when a burger or chicken wings are around and he’ll still f ight you till the death for a bite. Persistent is the best word to describe Leo. Oscar is Yvie’s f irst rescue and is the most loyal, calm and peaceful boy you’ll ever meet. Just don’t put him around cats or dogs with balls or he’ll dominate the hell out of them. Stella is our Staff y X and she had an extremely rough start to life. We call her our foster fail because she’s still with us almost two years later. She’s the biggest scaredy-cat but the most loveable and affectionate little girl in the world. Plus, she’s ball craaazy! Sissy was originally known as Rox y but because she’s brought so much joy into our lives she got the pet name Sis as I felt she was my sister. I love her so much, so now she’s Sissy! Even writing her name makes me cr y. She’s heaven on earth. W hat was a memorable holiday with your dogs?

W hat’s your favour ite memor y with your dogs? Ever y day with our babies is a favourite day but one that stands out is when Yvie went to rescue a dog from an apartment where this dog had apparently been left by herself for a couple of days. I was in my bed all sad when Yvie opened the door and handed me (with one hand) the smallest little girl you’ve ever seen. Her name was Tinee and you could hold her with one hand. I was having a rough time and Tinee entered my life right when I needed her – even more than she needed me. That was truly magical.

I remember when we took three of our little dogs we had at the time to a beautiful A irbnb out in the countr y. Charlie Bear decided he wanted to go be friends with all the cows in the paddocks so Yvie and I had to jump the fence to get him out. Then he f inished his night by humping my arm until he fell asleep. The day well spent for Charlie Bear A K A the ultimate f ighting champion!

a sprinkle of love W hat’s the best dog quote you’ve heard? It’s called Dog Lessons For People.

Dog Lessons For People Enjoy the simple pleasure of a walk Run and play daily Be loyal, faithful, and quick to forgive A lways drink plent y of water Sometimes it’s best to sit close and listen Follow your instincts Keep digging until you f ind what you want Avoid biting when a growl w ill do Accept all of life’s treats w ith gratitude Love unconditionally

Fa st Fa cts Fave place to sleep: Oscar (Pomeranian) – any where Yv ie is in bed but on the couch he’ll sleep on the top of the couch, not on it. Leo (Pomeranian) – under Yv ie’s bed (little troll) or in the car. Stella (Staff y X) – if she could, she’d sleep on top of you any where you are. She loves a bed nap though. Sissy (Bulldog X Boxer) – on the couch, on the f loor, in your bed, any where she f its she sits!

W hat can’t you live without?

Fave treat:

1. Dogs, 2 . Food, 3 . T V/mov ies, 4 . Great reading content, 5. Friends / family and MOR E DOGS

They all love their chicken necks and whole chooks. Sissy smashed prett y much an entire vegetarian gluten-free pizza once. It doesn’t sound great, but she loved it!

W here do you like to take the dogs in Sydne y? Coffee: We generally get coffee from our local and go to the many beautiful parks that we have in the inner west. W here the Monster Sat is great because they let our babies hang out the front and give them bulk TLC. Shopping: Food Barn in A nnandale because then we can park out the front while they all stare at us from the car. Walking: Bicentennial along the water. The dogs love sw imming there and we’ve met so many amazing people dow n there. For a quieter day, we go to A nnandale. Grooming: We have lovely ladies called Caroline and Ocean, who come to the house to groom our pooches. Are there any funny stor ies you can share about your pooches? Leo, the oldest, used to leave chicken necks all over the house. We would f ind them in the most bizarre places, so we made up a song dedicated to all of these chicken necks called ‘Loan Chicken Necks’.

Place to go: PA R KS! A ll day, ever y day. A nd any place they can go sw imming. Bring on more dog beaches Sydney! Fave toy: Sissy loves her Mike Wazowski toys and sticks that require eight dogs to carr y but she can do it herself. Stella loves balls and most of the other foster dogs love our socks, slippers and bras. We f ind our stuff ever y where. Fave dog product: We aren’t really ‘dog product’ t y pes of people, but who ever invented those ball throwers is an absolute genius!

It warms my heart to hear stories about people helping each other, and this story is about a compassionate person who helped instead of causing problems for the owner of a puppy. The ow ners of the puppy had to go to work, as we do, not fortunate enough to have the income for Doggie Daycare and the puppy was getting upset while they were away. The lady liv ing in a unit nearby heard the puppy barking and instead of reporting the ow ners to the council, complaining about the noise, she offered to take care of the puppy while they were at work.

Little acts of kindness may not mean much to the person offering them but could possibly mean ever y thing to the person on the receiv ing end. If you know of anyone who has a caring stor y whether they foster dogs, or have a rescue dog stor y or just a nice gesture somebody has done please let us know at editorial@puppylovemagazine.com.au as we want to #sharethepuppylove
