Arts Management & Entrepreneurship The Arts Management Program (BA) Led by a diverse faculty of educators and field professionals, the undergraduate program in arts management prepares a new generation of engaged managers who value the arts and are committed to the creative process. Emphasis is placed on developing critical inquiry, innovative thinking, and the business and communication skills necessary to navigate and facilitate the arts and entertainment industries in a changing global environment. Arts management graduates have gone on to pursue successful careers in a wide range of industries, including dance and theatre companies; community and performing arts centers; music and opera; galleries and museums; festival and concert venues; record companies and artist management agencies; and educational organizations.Â

The Arts Management Senior Project In this yearlong independent study, students conduct research and apply creative and critical thinking to an entity- or industry-based case study of their choice. The senior project allows students to develop valuable insight into current challenges, successes, innovations, and trends affecting the creative industries, giving them an edge that strengthens and expands their career options.

Conservatory of Dance The Conservatory of Dance’s BFA program gives students a comprehensive entrée into the world of professional dance. Purchase alumni currently perform with many of the foremost international contemporary modern and ballet dance companies. They also teach, direct, and choreograph major productions, dance on Broadway, have founded companies across the globe, and are nurturing the next generation of professors in higher education.
Program Highlights
The Conservatory offers professional training for serious and dedicated dance students, with daily classes in classical ballet and contemporary modern dance, as well as an extensive curriculum in composition. The program emphasizes both performance and choreography, providing students with a broad artistic foundation through the fouryear composition program and studies of music, dance history, dance production, anatomy, core curriculum courses, and a wide variety of electives.

Dance Facilities Our award-winning, Gunnar Birkerts-designed Dance Building is the first facility in the United States to be constructed solely for the study and performance of dance. Ten fully equipped studios, a state-of-the-art Pilates room, saunas and the 256-seat black box Dance Theatre Lab provide students with space, light, and inspiration. Performances in New York City Every other year, the Purchase Dance Company has a season at New York Live Arts. This tour gives students the opportunity to perform for industry professionals and distinguished alumni, and to be reviewed by the New York Metro press. Across both undergraduate and graduate programs, the Conservatory of Music offers a distinctive, comprehensive education that will prepare students for the challenges and rewards of a career in music. 12
Classical (MusB, MM) The Classical Instrumental Program is built upon substantial performance opportunities, including solo, chamber and orchestral performance, while our awardwinning opera program stages two full productions each year. Works by student composers are performed and recorded regularly, enabling individuals and groups to create significant portfolios of original repertoire. Areas of concentration include strings, piano, brass, percussion, woodwinds, classical guitar, composition, and voice and opera studies. Jazz (MusB, MM) Purchase is about playing. In the Jazz program, students perform in small and large ensembles while solidifying their education with intensive theory and history courses. Our expansive, real-world approach prepares graduates for the competitive and stimulating life of the professional jazz musician. Music and Technology (MusB, MM) The Studio Composition program engages talented and ambitious independent writers and artists in the craft of musical composition, its contemporary technologies and methods. The Studio Production program provides focused, creative training in the recording arts for developing engineers and producers across a broad spectrum of musical and multi-media genres.

Facilities The Music Building is our central facility for practice, rehearsal, recording, and classroom study. It offers an impressive variety of large, acoustically isolated rehearsal and performance spaces, including a 198-seat Choral Hall and a 280-seat Recital Hall and 72 practice rooms and teaching studios. The Conservatory maintains seven recording studio labs with both analog and digital workflows taught. Tie lines are wired into several additional larger live rooms where students record in every style and configuration, from small rock bands to full size symphony orchestras. The studios are open seven days a week during the academic year. All studios are equipped with industry-standard Avid digital audio workstations and peripherals and are kept up to date with the latest from Avid, Ableton, Waves, and many more. For live sound, students learn on Midas and Behringer X32 consoles with both analog and digital splits. The Conservatory of Music’s inventory includes Steinway B, D, L, and M performance pianos. We have the largest number of B Steinways offered for student use by any music program in the country.

Conservatory of Theatre Arts The Conservatory of Theatre Arts welcomes a select group of students for professional training in both acting and theatre design/technology through our intensive, highly focused BFA programs. The Conservatory also offers a BA program in theatre and performance, in which students undertake expansive study of the history and aesthetics of world drama and performance, and the possibilities of theatrical expression—as performers, directors, and playwrights—within a broader liberal arts context. Acting (BFA) Our acting BFA is a four-year sequential course of study in acting, voice, speech, and movement. Students’ practice is informed by offerings in dramatic literature and analysis, history of the theatre, stage combat, improvisation, physical comedy, make-up, as well as acting for the camera, the business of acting, and audition technique. Purchase College is a member of the Consortium of Conservatory Theatre Training Programs.

Design/Technology (BFA) Emphasizing studio and classroom training, our professional training program in theatre design/ technology gives students the guidance and support of established educators and theater industry professionals. The comprehensive and challenging curriculum spans every aspect of theatre design and technology, with plenty of room for students to find and pursue their specific passions. After common freshman year curriculum, the following concentrations are available: • • • • •

Students have full access to the exceptional Arts Center, gaining professional experience through active involvement in the Center’s extensive schedule of dance, musical, and dramatic productions. Classes are conducted in modern design studios, where students have their own workspace and personal drawing tables. Private and semiprivate design studios are often provided for juniors and seniors. Purchase students frequently pursue apprenticeships in studios and shops in New York City and beyond, providing rich industry experience and the opportunity to build a network of professional contacts.

Theatre & Performance (BA) From traditional theater to cutting-edge interdisciplinary work, the theatre & performance major encourages creativity, intellectual curiosity, social engagement, and critical thinking through an enriching degree program. The core requirements combine scholarship and practice to provide students with a strong foundation in theatre history and dramatic literature, with mandatory stagecraft/ production classes. Course offerings range from fundamentals of acting to playwriting and screenwriting to directing, with opportunities to explore digital media projections and nontraditional performance practices. Theatre & performance majors are encouraged to expand the scope of their education further by studying abroad, as well as pursuing courses in other programs of study such as art history, art+design, arts management, new media, sociology, anthropology, media, society and the arts, cinema studies, gender studies, Asian studies, global black studies, Latin American studies, and literature. Theatre Arts Facilities The acting companies at Purchase occupy their own instructional studios in the Dance Building. BFA and BA students also utilize the many performing spaces across the campus to present their productions, including the black box repertory theatre at The Performing Arts Center, The Underground Theatre at The Performing Arts Center, the new Humanities Theatre and the Dance Building’s black box Dance Theatre Lab. 19
School of Art+Design At the School of Art+Design, students learn the meaning of a life informed by aesthetic experience, where experimentation, collaboration and a commitment to making help to forge rewarding career paths in the visual arts and design. Our curriculum centers on historical and theoretical study, through which students build critical thinking skills, alongside studio-based practice that embraces new concepts, materials, and technologies. Our faculty of working artists is dedicated to creating a supportive climate in which students have the inspiration, resources and freedom to see, think, make and grow. Visual Arts (BFA, BS) The School of Art+Design offers four-year curricula in graphic design, painting/drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and interdisciplinary visual arts. Each student works closely with a faculty advisor to establish a program of study that allows the student to develop particular areas of interest and to prepare for the larger world of art and design. In the rigorous common foundation year, students investigate introductory courses in a number of visual arts disciplines before specializing in a major area

of study. Students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary course of study between two disciplines can apply for the visual arts interdisciplinary major starting in sophomore year. In addition, we offer the BS in visual arts, which provides an overview of contemporary art-based research methods and cultural theories, art history, and studio practice in a broad liberal arts context.

Visual Arts (MFA) The visual arts MFA in the School of Art+Design is a two-year interdisciplinary, pluralistic graduate course of study. This small, highly selective program fosters the artistic, intellectual, and professional growth of each student through close engagement with faculty, visiting artists and critics, as well as rigorous academic study and independent studio work. Students have access to individual studios, along with tremendous facilities, and are expected to produce a complete body of work during their two years in residence. Alongside core studio practice, students interested in advancing their teaching skills and pedagogical approaches to art making can pursue opportunities to assist in the teaching of undergraduate courses, with the potential to design and offer courses. Joint MFA in Visual Arts/MA in Art History MFA visual arts students have the option to pursue a three-year course of study resulting in both the MFA degree in visual art and an MA degree in art history. Students can apply separately to the MA program before beginning their MFA studies, or during their first year of MFA coursework.

Visiting Artists Each semester, weekly visiting artist lectures host noted artists, curators, critics and historians to share their perspectives, expertise and current work, and to give insight into contemporary issues facing artists and designers. Neuberger Museum of Art Located on campus, the Neuberger Museum of Art is the eighth largest university museum in the country. Designed by Philip Johnson, the Museum has a permanent collection that features works by Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Willem de Kooning, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and George Segal, among others. Students regularly engage with exhibiting artists and curators through coursework, studio visits, and special projects. Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery Located within the School of Art+Design, the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery gives students the opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional context alongside their daily classroom experience. As well as student work, the gallery’s program focuses on emerging artists, A+D alumni and current faculty. 23
