Welcome to the Gala Final of the 2015/16 European Business Awards It is appropriate that we are in Milan this year to celebrate your achievements in business. Italy’s rich heritage of entrepreneurialism and multi-generational family businesses has served the country well over many decades.

As the pace of technological change intensifies, it is the speed and agility in which these organisations adapt and prosper which will play a key role in the future prosperity of Italy. That agility and adaptability will be required not only here in Italy but throughout Europe, so it is fantastic to be celebrating and showcasing the companies here tonight as you demonstrate so effectively the characteristics that will be needed to compete effectively in the years to come. The European Business Awards enjoyed another successful year showcasing Europe’s best businesses to the world. We are proud of the publicity, relationships and the positive impact that the Awards has on the finalists in this competition – helping you to create new jobs and opportunities. From visitors to the website, to numbers of companies enquiring about entering we saw increases. This also included a rise of almost 30% in the number of public votes cast in the competition, taking the total to over 227,000. Our partners have also enjoyed a successful and very transformative year. Our headline sponsor adopted ‘RSM’ as their global brand name across all of their member firms worldwide, a move which reinforced the global network’s position as the adviser of choice to entrepreneurial, growth-focused organisations.

This position was reinforced in February when global results moved RSM from seventh to sixth largest global network of independent audit, tax and consulting firms, encompassing over 120 countries and more than 38,000 people internationally. We congratulate RSM on its success; it is a leading example of unity, international expansion and business growth. We are excited to continue the research and education work that we commenced this year looking at the challenges that hold back and prevent our best businesses becoming even more successful. The first phase of the research points to significant skills gaps, funding and challenges around international scaling of businesses. We will work with the business community, policymakers and educators to find solutions and create initiatives that address these hurdles in order to make our business communities grow. To end I would like to thank the people who make this evening possible: our talented judges for their time and expertise, our sponsors and partners, RSM, ELITE, PR Newswire and UK Trade & Investment for their continued support, and finally thank you to the brilliant businesses who together create a stronger and more successful business community. We wish you well both for tonight and in the future. Enjoy the evening.

WELCOME TO THE 2015/16 EUROPEAN BUSINESS AWARDS

Welcome to Milan! Many people consider this to be the global capital of fashion and design – it is certainly a city of glamour, which is why it is so fitting to be here tonight, celebrating in style, the achievements of so many. Since the beginning of the recession in 2007, in our day-to-day business and through our close association with these Awards, we have witnessed and worked to help European businesses tackle the unpredictable economies and everchanging business and financial landscape. And now we are braced for further uncertainty, as we are on the verge of a referendum that will see the UK either remain in the EU, or leave and go it alone. In addition, Europe is experiencing its largest inflow of refugees since the Second World War. Identifying creative, entrepreneurial people who will create significant future impact is not at all easy for immigration systems, but the result of this may be a rise in European migrant success stories, similar to that in the US where 40% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children.

Historically, Europe has always reacted to challenges thrown at it and emerged even stronger. Often, business opportunities and innovations are sparked from unexpected changes in our environments, and all European Business Awards finalists are examples of how to be successful in these challenging times. As well as being the lead sponsor of these Awards, we also sponsor the RSM Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In fact, we began our association with this programme by supporting the visionary leaders that seek out growth and prosperity. The momentous rise of technology that we have witnessed over the last two decades shows no sign of slowing down. It has never been more important to embrace entrepreneurial spirit; to be proactive about driving change rather than waiting to adapt to change, and embracing critical questioning, innovation, and continuous improvement.

by the quality of the esteemed representatives that make up the judging panels. Our thanks must go to the judges for their time and effort in analysing and determining which, out of the thousands of deserving companies who enter, will become one of the eleven overall winners of the Awards this evening.

05

As finalists, you will have faced rigorous scrutiny, and demonstrated your skills at innovation, strength of leadership and depth of business acumen. To get this far is a tremendous achievement and our congratulations go to each of you. JEAN STEPHENS CEO, RSM

The European Business Awards is now one of the most prestigious business award programmes in the world, validated not only by the calibre of participants but also

“We are proud to have sponsored The RSM Entrepreneur of the Year Award category since the inception of the European Business Awards. Entrepreneurship and innovation are integral forces in driving growth, stimulating economies and creating jobs and prosperity. We believe that today’s European entrepreneurs are the role models to our business leaders of the future. It is important that we recognise and champion these visionaries.”

CHAIRMAN OF JUDGES’ MESSAGE

It has become increasingly difficult to look at the prospects that lie ahead against a mixed background of conflicting and confusing messages. 06

On one hand, the latest forecast from the European Commission (17/03/16) paints a cautiously optimistic future in terms of continuing economic recovery, modest increases in GDP and falling unemployment and government debt and the International Monetary Fund expects modest global growth in difficult trading conditions helped by the recovery of markets like Russia, Brazil and The Middle East.

climate, there is a significant number of organisations who have the resourcefulness, creativity and energy to produce outstanding performances. Thirty two countries across Europe produced over 425 National Champions from an entry that had the quality to generate well over double that number. This year the finalists came from thirty countries making it the widest representation in the history of the programme and indicative that quality business performance is widespread across Europe. The award categories that produced the greatest number of

The European Business Awards again proved that whatever the economic climate there is a significant number of organisations who have the resourcefulness, creativity and energy to produce outstanding performances Global Research gathering data from independent sources sees the financial fragility of many major nations as a key concern and reflects on the potential uncertainty that even a small decline could precipitate. Because Europe operates as a major player in the global economy, it is not and cannot be insulated from global trends so the political leaders are perhaps prudent in adding words of caution in a climate of geopolitical difficulty. However looking back has always been an activity with a greater certainty and this last year in the European Business Awards again proved that whatever the economic

2514 EBA Gala Text.indd 6

National Champions also engender grounds for optimism; UKTI Innovation, RSM Entrepreneur and Business of the Year â‚Ź0-25m accounting for over 40%, categories indicative of the energy that is required to succeed when success depends on a more creative approach is alive and well. The traditionally most represented award categories of Customer Focus and Environmental and Corporate Sustainability account for 24% indicating that taking care of the revenue that only customers can provide and operating in an ethical and responsible manner continue as key priorities within successful organisations.

Europe may be facing some serious challenges in the year ahead with the tensions caused by the displacement of people from adjacent conflict areas and the wider implications of the UK’s referendum on membership. Whatever the scenarios that develop from such influences, the evidence demonstrated by the outstanding results by every entrant in The European Business Awards there is no doubt that the business community in Europe will have the acumen and resilience to continue to be successful. In thanking all of the panels of independent judges, who so kindly donate their knowledge, experience and expertise to the programme, on their behalf I offer our congratulations to every winner at every level of the competition on such a wide range of brilliant performances that, whatever the climate, shine a floodlight of confidence on the future of business in Europe. WHAT THE JUDGES SAY “It’s been a privilege participating as a judge for the EBA. It’s given me great insight into some amazing businesses and the way in which they are competing in their industry. I’ve met many interesting people and definitely got more from the process than I put in.” DARREN ROOS General Manager, EMEA North, SAP

“I think the Business Awards is a very good stimulus for all these people who are working in smallmedium enterprises and in bigger companies to always try to improve their results because it’s important that from the outside society is looking at it and is rewarding them and for their efforts.” YVES LETERME Former Prime Minister, Belgium

“I sincerely think that European Business Awards is a perfect platform for companies in Europe to present and test themselves internationally and through transparent competition become more visible worldwide. I fully support participants saying that recognition at European Business Awards give company management and entire team extra energy and confidence in striving for highest goals, it is also obvious that this event is an opportunity to enjoy a team spirit and have fun.” ANTANAS ZABULIS Chairman of the Board at Baltic Institute of Corporate Governance, Prime Minister Advisor, Board Member Invest Lithuania 2030, Omnitel

“I was deeply impressed by the high standards of the contestant’s performance and presentations. In light of that, our success of last year makes me even more proud. Personally, I found it extremely difficult to single out the winner, as the level of the top candidates were all on such high level. They were from different industries, so a direct comparison would not be possible. I could feel their passion and desire to win. The broad and critical evaluation process of the judging panel played a vital role here. I fully stand behind our conclusions and decision, which were based on a systematic, fully transparent and unbiased process. I value the great team work and professionality of all. In my view, the EBA contributes to drive innovation, share experiences and drive progress for better European business. It contributes to setting new standards and is evolving to become a benchmark for the best of European businesses.”

STEFAN RANSTRAND President & CEO, Tomra

Along with fellowship of other international judges we see how entrepreneurs change ideas and motivation into performance. It always gives me new, true and valuable lessons about business. And it is fun. I would recommend this experience to every entrepreneur.” MICHAŁ PERNER Deputy CEO, Medort S.A.
