Turbo Fruits In an episode of the web series “Records in My Life,” Jonas Stein, the frontman from Nashville’s Turbo Fruits, discusses a few of his favorite selections he pulled from the racks at Zulu Records, in Canada. His picks are as old as they are eclectic – CCR, Alice Cooper, Curtis Mayfield, the Flying Burrito Brothers. None of the familiar hipster favorites turn up, which may be why Pitchfork has never really warmed up to this band. Nor, apparently, Turbo Fruits did chic artists turn up while Turbo Fruits was readying its third and latest LP, Butter, from 2012: They told Rolling Stone that it was recorded while being influenced by Lil’ Wayne, Enya and 1970s soul, which, in combination, apparently sounds like boozy, shredding, slam-dancingly frivolous garage rock. Who would have thought? Nothing about Turbo Fruits says “21st century.” The band’s primitive, three-chord fury, gnarly vocals and inexpensive production values date back to the Nuggets compilation. Its first album, “Volcano,” was released in 2007, a few years after the so-called garage-rock revival of the Strokes and the Hives, and it leaves these hi-fi poseurs in its dust – another trend it wants no part of. Indie-rock cred, in general, is not important to these guys; take the great moment in its latest music video, for “Sweet Thang,” in which a bored girl considers playing Sonic Youth’s Goo LP but tosses it aside in favor of Butter, with its hilarious album cover of a knife slicing through a slab of butter embedded with the band’s name. References to pot and other drugs turn up a lot, both in interviews and in the band’s music, and gummy worms tend to be a recurring theme in their videos, which, I guess, goes along with the weed. But it’s hard to know how serious they are about the stoner lifestyle, because irony seems to be the group’s stock in trade. Their music revives the so-bad-it’s-good album cover and the long, curly hair of many a ‘90s grunge band, and in 2011, they even launched a music cruise, long the domain of MOR has-beens, and populated their Bruise Cruise with pure-bred garage rockers and fringe-y esoterica. It’s hard to say what they’ll do next, though it’ll probably have nothing to do with the latest music your record shop is seeking to promote. Art After Dark One of the Norton Museum of Arts most popular programs is its weekly Art After Dark series — “Where Culture and Entertainment Meet.” Every Thursday from 5 to 9pm. The popularity has rapidly driven the event into being one of the premier art events in Palm Beach County, providing a bridge between generations by presenting diverse arts to its many visitors — from music and dance, to film — as well as DIY art projects, tours, conversations with curators, lectures, wine tastings, and tantalizing dishes from the Museum café, Fratelli Lyon. The series was launched in 2009 as a monthly event and has rapidly become so popular that it has blossomed into a rare and exotic flower reminiscent of the Cedar Tavern in New York City, where folks such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline and beat writers like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac spent much of their off time. The museum has become a destination that fosters creativity in the community, and presents programs that relate to the Museum Collection and special exhibitions as well as to holidays and historical and cultural landmark dates. Up and coming bands are even featured alongside the art. Communications coordinator Hilary Greene predicts that it’s going to be around well into the foreseeable future. The facts are the Norton is a major art destination and holds the largest collection in the South-Eastern United States. It’s a sparkling jewel suspended over a languid pool. They say that in order to understand today, we must first understand yesterday – and what better way to get in touch with your artistic roots than to explore the art of the past while also keeping your fingers on the pulse of the art of today. Art provides a window into the clockworks of the world and the universe around us. Art is ephemeral and defies simple definition as evidenced in some of the Modern contemporary art of the last 50 years, Art that can be seen as wildly challenging. Art Synergy Back in May, Palm Beach County art luminaries Rolando Barrero (founder of the Boynton Beach Arts District and director of ActivistArtistA Gallery,) and local aspiring artist Craig McInnis met with other 561 creative minds in a brainstorming session they called “Think Tank,” with the hopes of unifying the county’s diversified arts community. The end result was Art Synergy, an amalgamating, cross-sectional, swath of genre-inclusive events designed as satellite fairs anchored to the larger ArtPalmBeach art fair held in January. With Art Basel’s tangential art fairs in mind, Art Synergy will run from January 23-28, include over 60 galleries, studios, non-profit institutions and museums, and highlight six different art districts--each with its own arts walk.

PureHoney: How would you describe your art for those who are not familiar? Craig McInnis: Hmmm, that’s always a difficult one, something like pop surrealism mixed with a cartoon edge. As a fine and commercial artist, my style has become very flexible. I “adjust” as needed to suit my client’s needs, while making sure I keep my “edge.” PH: Was Art Synergy the main result of that Think Tank meeting? CM: Think Tank has had a number of meetings and there are other initiatives in the pipeline, but Art Synergy was the first that we wanted to attack. PH: What kind of relationship will Art Synergy have with ArtPalmBeach? CM: ArtPalmBeach was gracious enough to welcome us with open arms. Lee Ann Lester (founder of ArtPalmBeach along with her husband) is our partner and at the same time a great mentor. They have included Art Synergy in all their press and web presence. They are also providing booth space on the floor of the show to promote our events. PH: Can you give us a brief overview of all the events during Art Synergy? CM: There are so many different things to enjoy amongst the six participating districts in our LOOP. Perhaps too many to even briefly mention. There will be visual art, 3D art, glass blowing, live art, music, dance, poetry, and fashion. Some districts are conventional “gallery” settings, some art walks, others more art fair, but all are definitely local and original! Humbert’s Last Goodbye The music of Humbert has been defined by angelic vocal harmonious reminiscent of the Beach Boys and a playful, driving organ, guitar and drums sound akin to Weezer at their perkiest and the Flaming Lips at its most somber. Whenever a band loses a key member, one has to wonder what the move will do to the group’s sound. But if the members of this quirky stalwart South Florida band are concerned about saying farewell to Rimsky Pons, their guitarist of nearly 20 years, they aren’t showing it.
Humbert “Rimsky is taking his life by the balls and reclaiming it,” says guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Fernando Coipel. “It’s a great thing, man.” “I am not happy about Rim leaving,” admits bassist Tony Landa, “but I am optimistic about what the three of us will do,” he adds, referencing drummer Izo Besares. The quartet has been a part of the Hialeah music scene for nearly two decades. Now, this January and maybe into February, guitarist Rimsky Pons will play his final gigs with the band he co-founded. Despite the big change, these now mature musicians, whose ages all hover around the early 40s, express only love for their soon-to-be former guitarist above any regrets. “We’ve had some awful defeats and some amazing victories as a band,” notes Pons trying to reflect on memories with Humbert, “and they’re all sorta melded in my mind with versions of Humbert that include Izo and Cesar [Lavin, Besares’ replacement for some time]. I really will miss making music with people who understand performance and art. It’s not every day you get to be part of something like that.” The shock of this departure comes after Humbert’s recent release of long-overdue new material, a rather sweet, melancholy three-song EP entitled “Se Reparan Todos.” The music includes some of the prettiest, restrained work of Humbert’s career. It’s fitting that the lyrics resonate with nostalgia and regret. As for Pons’ next move, who also leaves Low Visibility without his guitar stylings, he says, “I just want to pursue other non-musical avenues with my life. I’ve given a lot of good years to the pursuit of music and owe it to myself to try something new. Norsekorea Presents Orlando based booking outfit Norsekorea Presents will be celebrating their 3 year anniversary the weekend of January 24 and 25 with shows at Backbooth, WIll’s Pub, Lil Indies, and The Social. Founded three years ago by Bradley Ryan and Kyle Raker, the name Norsekorea has become established in the Orlando scene as a trusted name in punk, hardcore, metal, and indie rock booking. Now run solo by Raker, Norsekorea is celebrating the end of their 3rd year by inviting some of their favorite Orlando bands, as well as some of their favorites from Kyle Raker | Norse Korea around the state, to join them for a weekend full of shows at the best local music venues Orlando has to offer.
