Staying Rested for The Holidays Holiday parties may be getting in the way of your regular schedule of 8 hours of sleep per night. But if you want to get through the entire holiday season free from any colds/flu, and with enough energy and cheerful attitude for the next party, then sleep is very important (especially during this time of the year). You may not be able to get the full 8 hours per night during the holidays, but you can at least try to get a RESTFUL sleep leaving you refreshed and energized for that next party. Natural remedies are a great way to get a restful sleep as they are non-habit forming and have minimal side effects. Herbal remedies have been used for centuries for sleep and can also be useful for getting a good nights rest. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), a widely popular herb for sleep has been shown to improve sleep quality, decrease the time delay in getting to sleep and decrease the number of night awakenings. Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) has a long history of use as a mild sedative and for reducing symptoms of restlessness, anxiety, and agitation. Lemon balm (Melissa officianlis) has been shown to increase relaxation

and calmness, reduce stress, anxiety and insomnia especially when taken in combination with other herbal remedies such as Valerian and Passionflower. These herbs may be taken in the form of tinctures, capsules/pills, or teas. Melatonin is a hormone produced by our own bodies. It is involved in the body’s sleep-wake cycle and helps to facilitate sleep. Melatonin has been shown to reduce the total time required in falling asleep, and also has been shown to decrease the number of times a person wakes up at night when sleeping. If you are traveling far distances for the holidays, melatonin has also been shown to relieve symptoms of jet lag. Remember, issues with sleep can vary from person to person, therefore when using any new supplementation for sleep always consult with your health care provider.

Managing Stress During the Holidays The holidays can be both a time for enjoyment as well as a time that can be fairly stressful. Health issues can arise during this time so it is more important than ever to pay attention to our bodies’ needs. The following highlight areas to pay extra attention to while we get through the winter season.

Ashwaganda is an Ayeurvedic adaptogen that helps the body cope with stress. It contains phytochemicals that calm the brain, reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure and support the immune system. Recommended doses are 3-6 grams in raw dried herb form for 2-3 weeks at a time during stress.

The Immune system:

General lifestyle:

Vitamin D is a hormone and not a vitamin, meaning it binds to receptors on cell walls causing them to produce helpful proteins. Optimal dose for the winter in Canada from new guidelines is no more than 2000IU daily, more if you are known to be deficient.

Exercise is one of the best things to do to stave off SAD and prevent those extra pounds from creeping on from family feasts. Rejoin the gym or try hot yoga when the rain and early dark days make you feel like hibernating.

Astragalus has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries; this root tonifies the immune system and has a restorative effect on the adrenal glands to help us manage stress. The dose for a standardized extract is 250-500 mg three to four times per day. Your adrenal glands: The adrenal glands are those organs that give you energy and modulate your blood sugar, cortisol levels, sex hormones, mineral balance and immune system. B vitamins are involved in every step of energy production and are the most necessary nutrients for the adrenals. A sufficient dose to be taking on a daily basis especially during the holidays is between 50-100mg of a Bcomplex.

Getting enough sleep can be difficult when under stress. Poor quality sleep or not getting enough hours depresses our immune system, slows down body tissue repair, speeds up aging and makes us less able to cope with stress. To support sleep, try a botanical nervine combination containing Scullcap, Passionflower, Oatstraw and lemonbalm. Following these simple recommendations and taking a few select nutrients or botanical supportives can leave you feeling able to cope with the craziness in the holidays and hopefully help you enjoy this time to its fullest. O Christmas Tree with Green Tea If you are a Matcha Green tea lover, this delicious treat is a must try for this holiday season. Ingredients: 3/4 cup Powdered sugar 140 g Butter, cut into cubes 1 3/4 cup Flour 3 Large egg yolks 1 1/2 T Matcha Powder (available at Pure Integrative Pharmacies) 1 cup Sugar (for coating) Star sprinkles (or daisy sprinkles) Chocolate chips Large metal piping tip Plastic wrap Instructions: Dough: 1. Mix the matcha and powdered sugar together. 2. Cream the butter into the matcha/powdered sugar mixture until pale green and evenly mixed. 3. Mix in your flour until incorporated. Add the 3 egg yolks, mix until a dough forms, and gather the dough in a ball. Trees: 1. Take your dough and shape bits of it into little cones 3.5 cm tall and 2.5 cm in diameter (the cones will get shorter and fatter while baking, resulting in cones 3 cm tall and 3 cm in diameter). The trick to getting nicely shaped cones is to take the large metal piping tip, line the inside with a piece of plastic wrap, then fill the plastic lined tip with dough. When filled, pull out the plastic wrap along with your dough and you’ll have a nice cone. 2. Place them upright on a parchment-lined baking sheet. 3. Then, take a chocolate chip and make a dent in the bottom of each cookie so that the chocolate chip tree trunks can be attached after baking. 4. Refrigerate your cones for 30 minutes. Baking: 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. 2. Remove the cones from your fridge. 3. Pour the 1 cup of sugar on a flat surface. Roll each cone in the sugar, coating the sides, and replace on the cookie sheet. The cookies can be relatively close together on the baking sheet because they don’t spread much in the oven. 4. Carefully stick a star sprinkle in the top of each cookie. 5. Bake cookies in the oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the tips and bottoms start turning golden. Assembling: 1. Once the cookies cooled on the tray, melt some chocolate chips in the microwave or on a double boiler over the stove. 2. Take a chocolate chip, dip it in the melted chocolate and press it into the dent on the bottom of one of your cookies. Then stand the cookie on a flat surface and hold it up for a few seconds until it can stand on its own. Repeat with the rest of your cookies. Enjoy! Personalize Your Greeting Cards with Essential Oils This holiday season, try scenting your diffusers, such as basic tea light burners greeting cards and wrapping paper with a simple blend of pure essential oils for a unique aromatic appeal. Not only is it simple and fun to do, but it will also impart a subtly therapeutic effect to the ones who receive it! What you will need: • Greeting cards • Wrapping paper • A selection of essential oils, or an already formulated blend (page 9) • Cotton balls • Small cloth draw-string bag for encasing cotton balls; optional • Large re-sealable zip lock bags Allow yourself at least a full day to scent your paper before writing out your greeting cards or wrapping your presents. Put a few drops of your chosen essential oil blend onto one or two cotton balls and enclose in small cloth draw-string bag. This will protect the paper from being stained by the moisture content of recently applied essential oils. Put up to 15 cards for every 2 cotton balls in a large re-sealable plastic bag; seal tightly and allow to sit for at least 24 hours. For tissue paper, follow the same procedure. Once again, be sure not to let the oil come into contact with the paper. Seal the bag well (a zip lock bag is perfect) to ensure the paper can be fully scented. There are several other methods of using essential oils during the holiday season. These can range from low-tech

10

and ceramic tea light burners, to the more advanced and high tech electric nebulizers. The warm, woodsy and resinous notes of the following groups of wintery scents will all work beautifully for scenting your holiday greeting cards; try combining two or three oils from this group of plant oilsor simply select an already formulated blend, such as the ‘Spirit of Christmas’ blend. Wintery Essential Oils Spices: cinnamon, clove bud, bay leaf Citrus: mandarin, orange, tangerine Trees: pine, sandalwood, spruce, fir Resins: frankincense, myrrh Spirit of Christmas Blend 3 drops Myrrh essential oil 3 drops Frankincense essential oil 6 drops Sweet Orange, Mandarin or Tangerine essential oil Combine essential oils and disperse in a water-filled nebulizer or add to cotton balls for holiday scenting. Safety Precautions: Do not use undiluted essential oils directly on the skin. They can cause burning, skin irritation and photosensitivity. Use essential oils cautiously with those who are elderly, convalescing, or have serious health problems such as asthma, epilepsy or heart disease. Be cautious about using essential oils during pregnancy.

Holiday Survival with Health & Beauty Perfect your pucker for mistletoe mischief! Winter weather can take it’s toll on our delicate lips. To make sure that you lips stay healthy and beautiful make sure to exfoliate off dry, chapped areas with a natural sugar scrub and follow with moisture. A good pairing is to use a conditioning lip cream in the evening, as creams can deeply penetrate to intensively nourish, while using a balm type lip product during the day as they provide a protective barrier to harsh elements. A sheer gloss over a lip color or on it’s own can make the lips appear healthy and dewy while also giving the illusion of a fuller lip! A good tip is to use a nude or clear lip liner under the gloss to improve the wearability without changing the sheerness of the gloss. Tones with a bluer undertone can also serve to create a whiter smile as well. “Un-dulgence” (Undo the indulgence) After all the turkeys been eaten and all the eggnog is gone it’s a good idea to help your body to maintain a healthy balance with a mineral salt bath detox. Add salts to 1/4 full tub and after they are fully dissolved fill up the rest of the tub

12

with warm water. Mineral salts help to pull toxins from the skin and remineralize as well. Be sure not to stay in too long and be sure to drink plenty of water. Body creams that contain caffeine and other lipolitic agents are great to apply as well as they help to convert stored fat in the skins’ fat cell into energy and can help to diminish dimpling in the skin as well as water storage. Tired out Tootsies? From dancing the night away at holiday parties to pounding the pavement looking for that one perfect gift, our poor feet can take a beating. Look for cooling and refreshing natural foot products containing peppermint as they can help revitalize tired feet and legs as well as stimulate blood circulation! Try a peppermint foot spray throughout the day to refresh and a moisturizing foot cream in the evening (great for trading foot massages!) Deep Steep bath and body products offer a great assortment of natural Candy-Mint foot treatments which also make great gifts.
