Little Changes to a Healthy Heart Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Canadians. The most common type of heart condition is coronary artery disease. This occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries, leading to decreased blood flow and oxygen to the heart. The good news is that heart disease is preventable and manageable. Within our daily lives, we have the power to make smart decisions to lower our risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke in the future. Become educated and proactive by considering these heart-healthy steps: Be smoke-free and avoid secondhand smoke Smoking damages and narrows the blood vessels, and increases cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Compared to non-smokers, tobacco users are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease and 6 times more likely to suffer a heart attack. Lower your blood pressure if it is elevated Blood pressure is considered high if it remains ≼140/90 mmHg over a period of time and can begin to progressively damage or narrow the lining of the arteries. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor to discuss methods to reduce your blood pressure. Consume a healthy diet and keep cholesterol levels in check Try to consume a varied diet that involves low levels of saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt. Instead of denying all of your favourite foods, the idea is to make heart healthy foods your priority and allow yourself to celebrate with these

unhealthy foods occasionally. Some cholesterol is necessary for health but an excess can lead to fatty deposits, which decrease or block the oxygenrich blood to the heart. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor to discuss methods to reduce your cholesterol. Be physically active Regular exercise can lower many risk factors, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. On the contrary, a sedentary lifestyle might be worse than using a bit of tobacco. Unless your doctor instructs you otherwise, the general guideline is to try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise on a near daily basis. (Note: Before starting a new exercise program, ask your doctor to assess if your heart is healthy enough). Keep stress under control The most common reported trigger for a heart attack is an emotional event, especially involving anger. Sudden changes in blood flow can contribute to blockages in the arteries, so give yourself a time out when under stress. Remember, little changes go a long way! Start it off by setting reasonable heart conscious goals for yourself and your family.

All About Homeopathy As complimentary (alternative) medicine becomes more accepted and entrenched in our society, we are re-discovering an array of healing methods that have been used successfully in the past. Homeopathy has been used as a blanket term for natural remedies, but is actually its own system of medicine, with its own remedies and principles. Here are a few FAQ’s that can help differentiate homeopathy and other natural therapies. Q. What is homeopathy? • • •

Homeopathy is an individualized, highly effective system of medicine. Homeopathy assists the body’s natural abilities to strengthen and heal itself. Homeopathy recognizes that all symptoms are an expression of imbalance within the whole person, and that the patient, in his/her entirety requires treatment, not just the disease. This includes both the mind and the body.

Q. Who/when was it discovered? • •

The homeopathic principle of “likes cures likes” was first introduced by the ancient philosopher Hippocrates in the 4th century. Modern homeopathy was discovered by German physician, Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. He discovered a revolutionary approach to enhancing the immune system with remedies derived from natural sources, and administered in minute amounts.

Q. How does homeopathy work? •

4

The body’s own natural healing mechanism is stimulated by introducing a temporary artificial disease, similar, yet “stronger” (principles of

• •

Similia Similibus Curentur i.e. let likes be treated by likes), than the one being experienced. This is done by the homeopathic remedy and is achieved through subtle energies. This temporary artificial disease stimulates the body to increase its defense mechanism against the natural disease, therefore eliminating it. The similar remedy selected for the patient is prescribed in minimum dose (law of minimum dose) so that when administered there is no toxic effects on the body. It just acts as a triggering and catalytic agent to stimulate and strengthen the existing defense mechanism of the body.

Q. What type of medicine is used? • • • •

Homeopathic remedies are prepared from natural sources – plant, mineral and animal. They come in two forms - white sugar based pills (granules/globules) and alcohol based extracts (liquid drops). Medicines are diluted step by step in a strictly controlled manner to create the numerous different potencies (strengths of remedies). During each dilution, the medicines are shaken (sucussed). This process is called potentization and is required to release the medicinal, energetic potential of each medicine.

Q. Is homeopathy safe? • • •

Homeopathic medicines are free from any long-term side effects or aggravations. The remedies are non-addictive and safe for everyone with no unwanted side-effects There is no chemical action, so they do not have the potential to cause any sustained damage.

Q. What/who can homeopathy treat? • • • •

First aid, acute, chronic and palliative cases can be treated with homeopathy. Important form of preventative medicine Homeopathy is a long-term solution to maintaining a good standard of health – it is NOT just a quick fix. Homeopathy can treat all persons of any age (newborn to the elderly), as well as household pets and larger animals.

Although homeopathic remedies are safe to use, we are all individuals and therefore react/interact with medicines (natural or pharmaceutical) differently. This individuality is what homeopathic medicine is based upon. Therefore, when incorporating any new health regimen always consult with your health care provider to make sure all your therapies work best for you.
