ALL About Sun Care
Finally, summer is coming.
As much as we enjoy being outside and the feeling of the sun on our skin, there are a few things we need to consider. Sure, sun gives our body a nice tan and also produces Vitamin D, but on the other hand the UV Radiation can hurt our skin. For example, it causes sunburn and skin cancer; it also affects our eyes, causing dryness and irritation. So, to protect ourselves we should follow the “4 S-rules”: • • • •
Slip on a shirt Slap on a hat Slide on sunglasses Slop on sunscreen
Sunscreen is available in different varieties such as creams, gels or sprays and also different sun protection factors (SPF). In order to receive the best protection you have to consider your skin type. Somebody with a fair skin and maybe red hair needs a higher SPF than somebody who has a darker complexion. In our area here they should be water resistant and sunscreen is always better fragrance free. Also, if you choose one that is oil-free the sunscreen will not bother your eyes. Naturopathic Approach to
HEMORRHOIDS
H
emorrhoids, no one likes to talk about them, but most people are going to suffer from them at some point; the dreaded Hemorrhoids. Over the years, I have had many patients with chronic and recurring hemorrhoids who are looking for some natural, long lasting relief. Here are some of the facts about hemorrhoids and some natural approaches to help reduce them. What are they? Hemorrhoids are basically varicose veins, but they occur in a particularly unpleasant spot. They can happen more often when there is an increase in pressure on the veins, like during pregnancy or with weight gain. They are also more common in cases of chronic constipation, which puts extra pressure on these veins, causing them to swell and become uncomfortable. Symptoms can include itching, bleeding, pain and pressure. In most cases the symptoms are moderately uncomfortable and inconvenient, but more severe cases can be very painful. Treatment While severe cases of hemorrhoids may require surgery, most cases are not severe and can be treated with a combination of diet, lifestyle and natural medicines. Key recommendations that I make include Maintain adequate fibre and fluid intake. This helps to prevent constipation that can aggravate hemorrhoids. Regular physical activity also helps to keep the bowels regular and supports healthy circulation and body weight. Natural medicines that may be helpful
It is best to consult directly with a naturopathic doctor for guidance on which supplements would be most appropriate for you, but here are the ones I recommend most often: Bioflavonoids - these natural plant extracts, often derived from berries or citrus fruit, support the strength of blood vessel walls and are a great addition to protocols for hemorrhoids or varicose veins. Bioflavonoids are often found in combination with vitamin C which also helps to maintain the health of blood vessels by supporting the proper formation of collagen, a key material in blood vessel walls. Pycnogenol - this pine bark extract, available in an oral supplement, has some pretty good evidence for supporting vein health. I find it useful in the treatment of hemorrhoids, varicose veins and other conditions where “weak veins� are a problem. I have used pycnogenol, in combination with horse chestnut seed extract for treatment and pycnogenol on it’s own for preventing the reoccurrence of hemorrhoids. Horse chestnut extract -this plant extract has both a long history of traditional use and some clinical studies to back it up. Most of the research has been on its use for vein problems in the legs but I have had good success using horse chestnut extract supplements in treating patients with hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can be a real pain, but most cases can be resolved with a combination of diet, lifestyle and other natural interventions. Topical products, available at your local pharmacy, are also great additions to treatment to help relieve symptoms quickly while other interventions are taking effects.

Stress and Your Adrenal Glands
L
ily Tomlin got it right when she declared, “For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.� The award-winning actress and comedienne was no doubt talking about the effects of stress. Excessive or chronic stress has a detrimental effect on the hormones we need to keep us young and fit. Stressors like bad relationships, driving, lack of sun exposure, excessive exercise, loneliness, too much to do and not enough time and much more. When these stressors are unrelenting, they disrupt the delicate hormone balance that affects everything from how slowly we lose weight to how fast our skin wrinkles. Cortisol: The Stress Hormone In stressful situations, the brain orders our adrenal glands to secrete cortisol. Cortisol has a natural rhythm throughout the day. Your body should produce more in the morning than in the evening, giving you the energy to begin your day. In the evening, as you leave your daily stresses behind, cortisol levels should drop by 90 percent. However, a recent study found that women who work outside the home and have family responsibilities tend to have elevated evening cortisol levels. Other studies in women have shown that exercising at night leads to elevated evening cortisol levels that can then cause weight gain and disruption of sleep particularly night time waking. Elevated cortisol levels over the long term have a long list of negative effects, including: blood sugar problems, belly fat accumulation, poor immunity, infertility, exhaustion, chronic fatigue, bone loss, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and heart disease. The adrenal glands are also the back up hormone system producing estrogen, testosterone, DHEA and progesterone. At menopause when the ovaries take a much needed rest the adrenals will provide the hormones you need. That is if the adrenals are not exhausted.

When our adrenals become exhausted we crave caffeine and salt, have difficulty handling stress; we fall asleep fine but wake up several hours later and not be able to get back to sleep quickly; we develop a low sex drive and exhaustion occur; and depression and anxiety increase. When cortisol is high, we also see a drop in the production of the antiaging hormone DHEA. We have naturally high levels of DHEA when we are young, but experience a steady decline after the age of 20. Low DHEA is associated with loss of muscle mass, strength, and stamina; low sex drive and sleep problems. To support DHEA production in the body, lowering cortisol is essential. It is like a see-saw DHEA goes up cortisol goes down and when cortisol goes up DHEA drops and increased aging occurs. Balance Your Cortisol with Mother Nature To counteract the effects of stress quickly you should ensure you get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep and eat a fabulous diet full of vegetables and good clean sources of protein along with a high-quality multivitamin and mineral formula. Summer Exercise stress on your heart and lungs. Both the exercise itself and the air temperature increase your body temperature. To dissipate heat, more blood circulates through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which increases your heart rate. If the humidity is high, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin — which only pushes your body temperature higher. Under normal conditions, your skin, blood vessels and perspiration level adjust to the heat. But these natural cooling systems may fail if you’re exposed to high temperatures and humidity for too long. The result may be a heat-related illness, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heatstroke. When you’re exercising in the heat, be on the lookout for heat-related illness. Signs and symptoms may include: • • • • • •
O utdoor exercise can be challenging when the temperature soars.
Stay safe by drinking enough fluids, wearing proper clothing, and by timing your workout to avoid extreme heat. If you suspect a heat-related illness, stop exercising and get out of the heat. Drink water, dampen and cool your skin using a wet cloth and fan. If you don’t feel better within 30 minutes, contact your doctor. If you develop a fever higher than 102 F (38.9 C) or become faint or confused, seek immediate medical help. Regular exercise is important — but don’t let your hot weather workouts put your health at risk.
