HISTORY Photographic education at the University of Westminster has a unique depth of tradition. The world’s first courses in photographic chemistry were delivered at the Regent Street Campus in the first half of the 19th century, and the first degree in photography was offered in 1980s at what was then the Polytechnic of Central London, (now the University of Westminster). The Regent Street Cinema began life in 1848 when a new theatre was added on to the south side of the Royal Polytechnic Institution. The theatre was purpose built for the ‘optical exhibitions’ for which the institution had become famous. In 1886 the Lumière Brothers began showing moving pictures for the first time in the UK before a fee paying audience in this recently refurbished theatre, which is now open to the public once again. The University of Westminster has continued to build on its pre-eminence in the field of photographic image making – as well as in supporting the study of new technologies concerned with the presentations of facts and the creation of fictions.

BA PHOTOGRAPHY 3 years full-time and 4 years part-time
This is a course in the creative and critical practice of photography. You will be encouraged to develop your own visual practice through an appreciation of the history of the medium as well as a critical understanding of its wider social and cultural signiďŹ cance. You will also explore a wide range of relevant contemporary theories and debates designed both to stimulate a critically engaged practice and to better prepare you for a range of related careers. You will also gain cognitive and transferable skills necessary for lifelong personal and professional development. Many of our graduates go on to work as photographers and photographic artists, but equally they pursue a range of careers within the broader photographic and creative sectors, as designers, historians, magazine editors, museum and gallery curators, picture editors and researchers, teachers, and writers. Many also go on to postgraduate study.

MA DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTOJOURNALISM 3 years full-time and 4 years part-time
The course explores documentary practices and photojournalism as exciting and developing mediums, through a combination of practicebased teaching and discussion of critical contexts. We take each applicant on their own merit. This can include students of documentary photography or photographers in general who are interested in specialising in this area. Also welcome are artists who wish to focus their activities on a more social practice, and individuals from other disciplines, who wish to explore the subject area at postgrad level. The course builds on the international stature of the photographic and journalism departments of the University and is designed to equip you with an awareness of contemporary documentary and photojournalism, drawing on a variety of related media. The course can be taken in full-time or part-time mode.

MA PHOTOGRAPHY ARTS The Photography Arts MA offers a dynamic mix of photography practice and research to support your development as an artist. In an open-minded educational environment you will expand the boundaries of your photography, advancing your own distinct visual and conceptual approach. Students are fully supported by our internationally renowned photography staff and inspired by an exciting range of prominent visiting photographic artists and thinkers. Situated in Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design, you will have access to extensive photographic facilities and a wealth of interdisciplinary expertise. You will be part of a world-famous centre for photography research. The Photography Arts MA is a recently revalidated course, which builds on the former Photographic Studies MA (1996-2016). The course champions a long, proud tradition of cutting-edge photography pioneered at the University. The course can be taken in full-time mode (one year) or part-time mode (two years).

FACILITIES The Photography Centre offers five large, professionally equipped studios, industrystandard post-production facilities for wide format digital printing and mounting, as well as Epson flatbed and Hasselblad Flextight professional scanners. Our Equipment Stores hold 35mm, medium format and large format film cameras, a large range of digital cameras including Hasselblad and Phase One digital medium format cameras and portable flash lighting. In addition, there are well-equipped laboratories for image analysis, sensitometry, colour evaluation and colour profiling and management. While most photography centres closed their darkrooms with the advent of digital technologies, Westminster kept theirs running and it now remains one of the best educational darkrooms in the country, equipped with E6 and C41 processing machines as well as black and white and colour darkrooms with 48 enlargers including large format machines for 5Ă—4 negatives. There is also a special processes area for other kinds of chemistry and techniques.
