Need to Know Beauty Tips by Dr. Vidhi Pandya Patel | R&D Consultant & Nutritionist @smilingvidhi

N

ever scrape off your nail polish! You can damage your nails surface to become rough as you are essentially stripping away the top layer of your nails.

Y

Hair

our hair is exposed to lots of harsh elements, so why not treat it to a quick, fresh homemade hair mask? Mix 2 tbsps. of honey with 2 tbsps. of cinnamon powder and enough olive oil till you get a paste. Rub that paste onto your scalp and leave for 15 minutes. Rinse off with water and then use shampoo till it is gone and reveals soft and shiny hair.

Doing a manicure at home? To make sure you don’t ruin your nails we suggest you put on a coat base nail polish. Ideally one with nutrients that can help to rejuvenate your nails and is breathable. Put down that “hydrating” nail polish and pick up a glass or two of water. If you want to hydrate your nails, you need to drink plenty of fluids. This is the best way to keep your nails hydrated and in the best condition and the same applies to your hair!

Nails

Look out for Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) in hair products as it prevents hair from greying, restores natural colour but more importantly, it has moisturising and antiinflammatory properties.

L

ooking for a hydrating face mask? Buy one that contains Glycerin (which helps skin attract and retain moisture) and Hyaluronic Acid (found naturally within the skin and it supports moisture retention, leaving your skin looking plump with the hydration sealed into it). Your outer appearance suffers if you don’t look after yourself inside. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and make sure you get plenty of rest. Both will give your skin a head start in looking and feeling refreshed.

Expert Advice! Did you know vitamin C increases collagen production, giving us younglooking radiant skin? It’s perfect to combat skin that looks peaky or pale! Make sure vitamin C is an ingredient in your skincare regime but also in your diet. You can find vitamin C in foods such as oranges, lychees, broccoli, brussels sprouts, red and green peppers, kiwifruit, guava etc. 4

What’s the deal with Collagen? by Deborah Biondi | Nutritionist

Did you know that without an adequate daily amount of vitamin C, the body cannot produce new collagen? What and where is it? Collagen is a protein that is naturally produced in skin, bones and connective tissues. It makes up 30% of our body’s proteins!

What does it do in our bodies? Collagen is the main structural protein in different connective tissues. It holds the body together like a scaffolding. It provides strength and flexibility to muscles and joints, and is vital for skin firmness and resilience.

How is it linked to skin and healthy ageing? Collagen is extremely important for our skin. It is mainly formed in our dermis (deeper layer of our skin, underneath the epidermis). Collagen plays a role in strengthening skin and promoting elasticity and hydration levels, giving your skin a plump and healthy look. Unfortunately, from 25-30 years old we begin to lose our collagen and this is accelerated by external factors such as sun exposure, pollution, smoking and an unbalanced diet. A decrease in collagen production leads to dry and sagging skin, and wrinkle formation. This is the main link between skincare rejuvenation products, the natural agening process and collagen.

Did you know

that once fruit has been prepared you should serve it immediately? Antioxidants in fruit react to oxygen and light, which leads to a depletion of their nutritional value so make sure you avoid pre-cut options.

Harmoniser Bowl Matcha porridge Almond yoghurt Banana Pear Roasted green peas

Toasted almond flakes Black pepper Fresh mint

Sweet Escape Bowl A slice of dark rye bread Soy yoghurt Papaya

Mind & Body

Why should you sle by Ramneet Kaur Maras Editor | @thefinder._

When we want a good night’s sleep, we turn to cutting out caffeine, turning off all screens, reading before bed etc, but have you thought about what you wear to bed? Researchers have conducted studies about the health benefits of sleeping in the nude. 10

Ditch your clothes

Beauty sleep

Wearing tight or loose clothes in bed can disrupt our sleep. For instance, you could wear tight clothes to bed, and this can result in chafing making you feel uncomfortable. You could wear loose clothes and even this can irritate your sleep pattern as you wake up to realise your clothes are twisted and still creating friction. Wearing no clothes lowers your skins temperature and researchers have found this to be the best way to ensure a good quality night’s sleep. Sleeping nude encourages your body to maintain its own heat and this speeds up your body’s metabolism.

A disruptive sleep means your cells aren’t regenerating properly and this means our skin suffers. Being overly warm means we wake up constantly, this disruption interferes with the release of anti-ageing hormones such as melatonin.

Improve your relationship

Confidence booster

It’s well known that skin to skin contact with your partner releases the happy hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin reduces stress, depression, blood pressure and can even help with an inflamed gut. Along with the positive benefits of Oxytocin, you get a good quality sleep and the added perk of feeling closer to your loved ones.

We’re always covering up and for those who have a lack of body confidence, this only worsens. It’s time to see ourselves naked. See yourself in all your glory first thing in the morning and last thing at night and you will become more aware of yourself and accept your beautiful body.

3

eep naked?

We clean our faces to remove dirt, allowing the skin to breathe. Apply this thinking to your body by sleeping naked. It can help solve issues as it allows your skin to breathe reducing the chances of you suffering from problem skin.

5

4

No one will call you lazy again

You will feel liberated! When you wake, you will feel more inclined to get up and face the day rather than slouching around. By practising healthy behaviours like getting enough sleep, regular exercise, balanced diet, you will maximise your longevity.

GOODBYE SLOTH YOU. HELLO MOTIVATED YOU!

Top Foods to eat during Pregnancy by Dr. Vidhi Pandya Patel R&D Consultant & Nutritionist @smilingvidhi

Eating well throughout your pregnancy is crucial as you’re eating for two. Here are important foods you should be eating during your 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester.

Top 5 foods to eat in the 1st trimester Many women lose their appetites and suffer from nausea in the early months of pregnancy, so make sure you get off on the right foot! Spinach: high in folic acid. Lentils: protein, aids in the baby’s tissue and muscle growth. Chicken: high in iron, which creates red blood cells and helps your body get enough oxygen. Salmon: high in calcium, vitamin D and is one of the safer fishes to eat while pregnant*. Cheese: source of dairy, important for bone development.

*Salmon is low in mercury and considered safe for expectant mothers but limit your intake to 2 or 3 servings of 4 ounces or less each week to be safe.

Top 5 foods to eat in the 3rd trimester

Top 5 foods to eat in the 2nd trimester At this stage, your baby will be well developed, so it’s important to eat foods rich in calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and omega-3 oils.

This is most likely the difficult stage as your bump gets bigger and you’ll need an extra 200 calories to make sure you’re getting enough energy.

Lean Meats: rich in iron and iron supplies oxygen to the baby.

Sweet Potatoes: full of nutritious fibre, vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin C and iron, copper and the antioxidant beta-carotene. Beta-carotene converts to vitamin A which plays an important role in the development of the baby’s eyes, bones and skin.

Milk/Yoghurt: good source of calcium for bones and teeth development and supports muscles, nerves and the circulatory system. Eggs: needed for prenatal proteins. Excellent source of protein, calcium and vitamin D, which is needed for bone development. Citrus Fruits/Orange Juice: rich in folic acid, potassium and vitamin C, help prevent birth defects. Potassium is important for keeping your muscle function, metabolism and overall health in check. Oily Fish: rich in omega-3 fatty acids which support the heart, brain, eyes, immune system and central nervous system.

Nuts: full of healthy fats like brain-boosting omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, fibres, vitamins and minerals like magnesium. Magnesium rich foods help reduce the risk of premature labour and aids in the development of baby’s nervous system. Oatmeal: filled with fibres, proteins and vitamin B6. Whole grains are great for the baby’s development and for keeping your energy levels up, especially if morning sickness has you feeling drained. Leafy Greens: packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Calcium, potassium, fibres, folate and vitamin A all help with the baby’s development. Beans and Lentils: great source of proteins, iron, folate, fibres, zinc and calcium. They’re vital for the growth of the baby and zinc is linked to a lower risk of pre-term delivery, low birth weight and prolonged labour.

Seated Side Bend Great for those who are suffering from lower back pain. Begin in the half lotus position. Place your right hand on the ground for balance. Stretch your left arm above your body and bend to the right. Look towards your left hand. Repeat on your left side. In pregnancy you need to look after your mental and physical wellbeing and this also includes pampering your skin to fix issues such as sensitivity, breakouts of spots, rashes and pigmentation. Users of the Gold Collagen® Hydrogel Mask saw an increase in skin hydration, skin radiance and a reduction in the appearance of the signs of ageing. Marrakesh, Morocco by Victoria Bello | Marketing Assistant

Choose sunny and find out the best time to visit Morocco is at its most beautiful from March to May when the landscape is fresh and green. However, many also prefer going in the Autumn (September to October) to escape the cold British weather and enjoy the warm and pleasant Morocco temperatures with less tourists.

How to get around

What to see

Where and what to eat

There are buses into the city from surrounding areas, but these can be difficult to navigate and are often sporadic. Your best bet is to hail a taxi, as these are inexpensive and easy to come across. Always check if your accommodation provides a daily shuttle service to and from the city centre as this makes getting around the city much less challenging.

Visit the famously renowned market in the medina Jemaa el-Fna, which is steeped in ancient traditions and practices such as snake charmers, barbary apes, magicians and an array of stalls. Book a day excursion to the famous Atlas Mountains and you may get to see the famous Berber villages where Argan Oil is produced, and the still intact ancient traditions.

There are many amazing restaurants offering traditional cuisine to your standard burger and chips. We recommend Le Blokk, which serves both international and traditional meals. Try the Moroccan staple, a tagine, which is a hearty meal that is full of tasty spices, vegetables and various meats. Or why not try a Chicken Pastilla? This pie is a delicious Moroccan delicacy.

Do you know how to haggle? We don’t ask this lightly because haggling is at the core of Moroccan markets. Make sure you go in with a price in mind, be firm, walk away if you need to, don’t look too keen and keep it fun with a smile on your face.

Luxembourg City by James Robertson | Freelance Travel Photographer | @londonandaway

Choose castles and find out the best time to visit There are a few of us out there who prefer a cooler and wetter climate – that’s right, we do exist! And what better place to pick than green Luxembourg City. The best time to go is the autumn months when the leaves turn golden that the city is at its most magical. Direct flights from UK to Luxembourg City cost as little as £10 during this period making it an excellent weekend break.

How to get around Luxembourg City is easy to cover on foot but be aware that there are steep paths/ steps. Also, they have recently built a panoramic elevator that connects the Parc Pescatore to the bottom of the Alzette valley, not only does this save your legs, it also provides breath-taking views of the city and the River Alzette.

Do you want to travel smoothly? Buy a Luxembourg Card. It gives you free transport on all buses and trains throughout the country as well as access to over 60 museums and tourist attractions. A 3-day pass costs just 28 euros.

What to see Luxembourg City is a UNESCO World Heritage site and exploring the city provides plenty of interesting things to see. A popular attraction is the Bock Casemates which is a series of underground tunnels 23km long once used to transport supplies and weaponry to troops during battles hundreds of years ago. Outside of the city there are some stunning castles that look like a scene out of a Disney movie. Vianden Castle is the biggest and most famous, but Bourscheid Castle is not to be missed. Bourscheid Castle is perched 150m above the River Sure. The castle was first built approximately 1,000 years ago, some of the towers and walls have since collapsed making a large part of the castle an open-air ruin, which all adds to its charm.

Where and what to eat Luxembourg cuisine is heavily influenced by its neighbouring countries of France, Belgium and Germany. If you like fish, then you would love the F’rell Am Rèisleck which is trout cooked in a delicious wine and cream sauce.
