Between the Tobacco Root Mountains and the Madison Range, generations of Shoshone, Bannock, and Flathead Tribes once traveled to the Madison Valley to hunt seasonally. In the 1860s, Irishman William Ennis homesteaded along the Madison River, in the spot where the town bearing his name quickly took shape. Today, Ennis is where cattle country meets trout-filled waters. Both ranchers and fly fishermen place high value on this special part of our state, with ranching families stretching back for generations and fishermen traveling from far and wide to try their hand at some of the Madison’s blue ribbon fishing spots. With old west saloons and an annual rodeo, as well as outfitter shops and a fly fishing festival, the close-knit town of Ennis values both its western heritage and its sportsman’s allure.
