WHITEFISH // Area Intro & Highlights
WHITEFISH
Once a small logging outpost on the Great Northern Railway, Whitefish is now the epicenter of outdoor recreation and small town charm in northwest Montana. Nestled at the base of Big Mountain and against the shores of Whitefish Lake, Whitefish offers easy access to every type of alfresco fun imaginable, from golf to waterskiing to carving turns all winter long on Whitefish Mountain Resort’s 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. As an added bonus, the town is just 25 miles from the serene vistas and endless hiking trails of Glacier National Park.
The allure doesn’t end with the natural beauty, however. There’s always something happening in downtown Whitefish, from the relaxed community fun of the Tuesday night farmers markets to the wide and wonderful variety of high-quality theater, dining, and live entertainment. The Under the Big Sky music festival draws big names and 20,000 fans to the Big Mountain Ranch each summer, while local musicians keep the nights lively throughout the year at the bars and venues around town. Whether you’re looking to spend a day or a lifetime, it doesn’t take long to see why Travel + Leisure magazine calls Whitefish one of the Best Small Towns in America.

MUCH MORE THAN A SKI HILL
SUMMER FUN AT WHITEFISH MOUNTAIN RESORT
After the chairlifts close and the last stashes of snow melt, a whole new kind of fun begins at
Whitefish Mountain Resort. The mountain offers activities perfect for every age and adventure level, from three-year-olds rolling the beginner berms at the Strider Bike Park to serious downhill mountain bikers catching a chair to the summit for an adrenaline-fueled descent on one of the 25 downhill bike trails. Visitors can also choose from soaring above the trees on a zip line tour or speeding through them on the alpine slide. Feeling brave? The aerial adventure park offers five different courses with obstacles from 10 to 50 feet off the ground, allowing you to test yourself as you traverse from tree to tree via rope ladder or swinging trapeze. Kids—or the kid in all of us—also love racing down the side-by-side summer tubing track.
And don’t forget the simple joy of standing on the summit of Big Mountain. Ride a chair or enclosed gondola to the summit, or hike the 3.8 miles of the gorgeous, winding Danny On trail. The top of the mountain offers jaw-dropping vistas of Glacier National Park and the Canadian Rockies, along with a bird’s eye view of Whitefish Lake and the entire Flathead Valley. The mountain is as wonderful in July as it is in January.
A FESTIVAL OF FUN
GOOD TIMES AT THE WHITEFISH WINTER CARNIVAL
There’s no better way to spice up a Montana winter than at the Whitefish Winter Carnival! Going strong since 1960, this beloved tradition is a zany mix of mountain culture and small-town fun at its best. From the high-speed thrills and epic wipeouts of the skijoring competition to the penguin plunge in icy Whitefish Lake, the carnival is a truly unique annual event. It’s built around a local legend of Ullr, Norse god of winter, and a pesky band of Yetis who all make their home in the high valleys of Big Mountain. They venture down to Whitefish each winter when the festivities begin—even Yetis need something to look forward to in the dark days of winter.
The carnival events include the lively Merry Maker roast of Whitefish and a full-on “shake your groove thang” Disco Party. The festivities culminate in the Grand Parade, where the fur-clad Yetis gleefully terrorize the crowd and attempt to steal the Queen of Snows before being driven away by fearless local Vikings. Each year’s theme inspires a wild variety of costumes for both the parade spectators and participants; watch the action streetside or from one of the city’s elevated venues, like the rooftop patio of the Firebrand Hotel. However you choose to get in on the fun, this much-loved Whitefish tradition is the best way to beat cabin fever each February!
