Monkee Shines

From the Editor!

Dear

Several of us debated on spending the money.. There are always better things to spend money on than entertainment when the economy is iffy, medical bills have wiped out savings, the future can be uncertain but we all need to escape once in a while and be with friends and forget everyday stresses. The thing is to quote Jim Morrison, “Nobody gets out of here alive.” You can live your life worrying about the future or you can live in the now and enjoy the things that come your way. Either way it ends the same. So enjoy the gift of today… I hope you dance! While you are out there dancing be sure to write and share your Monkee adventures with us. We want your stories! Have a wonderful Summer! Cindy

Gang,

Once again I apologize, for I hope the last time, for the lateness of the newsletter. Hopefully this will be the last time and to thank you for your patience I am adding an extra issue to everyone’s membership. The long winter is over and my health is improving. Spring is in the air and summer concerts will soon begin. I haven’t been to a concert in about a year and a half. So, I am thrilled that my first concert of the summer will not only be in one of my favorite places (St. Charles, IL) to see David but with some of my favorite people (The PFG Road Crew) and thanks to Dawn we have front row center seats.

PS/ A big thanks to Diane Klosak for making me a copy of the Newlywed Game. If you haven’t seen it and would like a copy let me know.

Notice We will make every effort to publish Monkee Shines on the last week of October, January, April, and July. If for some reason it is going to be delayed you will be notified by postcard. As always, if you are unhappy with your membership for any reason, we will be happy to refund the remainder of your membership dues upon request.

Concert review:

Technical troubles overshadow solid voices at David Cassidy, Davy Jones show 03:29 PM CST on Sunday, Feruary 7, 2010

ful, but the rocked-out takes on "I Think I Love You" and "Cherish" hurt my ears. Cassidy's voice sounded terrific, but anytime he went off the Partridge Family track, things went horribly awry in other ways. He forgot the lyrics halfway through John Lennon's "In My Life," and also fumbled with the lyrics of his own songs. The audience helpfully sang along, feeding Cassidy the lyrics that he couldn't be bothered to remember himself. He's only been singing them for ... what, 40 years? Jones also was in strong voice, but he didn't drop a line once and he seemed genuinely happy to be there. The one truly bizarre moment came when he brought out his wife, Jessica Pacheco, and she did an extended flamenco dance. Yes, you read that right. Flamenco. Fans might have hoped that Cassidy and Jones would share the stage, and they did, but only for a mercifully brief reprise of "I'm a Believer" at the end of Jones' set. Singing in two keys, they created a lasting memory that I'm sure most of us will be trying for a long, long time to forget. We did not wake up in love last evening.

By JOY TIPPING / The Dallas Morning News jtipping@dallasnews.com GRAND PRAIRIE -- Plagued by sound issues and a dead electric guitar, and sporting a smarmy faux-cheerful attitude that couldn't hide his annoyance, pop star David Cassidy was the very antithesis of "Come On Get Happy" Saturday night at Nokia Theatre. Cassidy, who starred in The Partridge Family in the early 1970s, played on a bill with Davy Jones of The Monkees, whose heyday came a few years earlier. Jones was promoted as the opening act, but he sang as long as Cassidy (about 90 minutes each), and delivered more of what the female-boomer-centric audience obviously craved: the old songs, done the old way. Cassidy, on the other hand, just couldn't help futzing around with things. So although he started off strong, and had the audience adoring him, with a rousing "I Can Hear Your Heartbeat" and a lovely "Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque," things quickly devolved from there. There was a discoed up version of "I'll Meet You Halfway" that wasn't too aw8

Mike Nesmith’s Ex-wife passes away.

Phyllis Barbour-Nesmith-Gibson Obituary easing their transition home. Following that, she had a long and successful career as a senior vice president, working with people she dearly loved at Winner & Associates, an L.A.-based communications firm. She was an avid hiker, a voracious reader, yoga-enthusiast, a cat-fancier, and an angelic singer. Her passion for hiking and biking was truly established when she married her husband Bill, nearly twenty years ago. She is survived by her beloved husband Bill Gibson, her children Christian Nesmith, Jonathan Nesmith and Jessica Nesmith, her granddaughter Chyna Dale, her brother Bruce Barbour, and her sisters Cristine White and Joannie Cass. Phyllis was much beloved by all who knew her and she will be deeply missed. Phyllis GIBSON Phyllis Gibson, born Phyllis Ann Barbour, died at age 63 on February 13, 2010. She was born July 30, 1946 on Long Island, New York, to Paul and Elizabeth Barbour. Due to her father’s lifelong career as an educator and a soldier, Phyllis lived in a variety of countries as a young girl, including Germany, before settling in San Antonio, Texas, for the majority of her school years. Phyllis moved to Los Angeles at the age of 17 with her first husband Michael Nesmith of The Monkees, with whom she had three children. In the late 1960’s she travelled the world with the band and was truly adored by young fans everywhere. In the 1970’s she worked as a political aide to Senator Alan Cranston and many others. During those years she raised money and awareness for many of the causes she believed in. She took a very personal interest in helping Vietnam War veterans gain access to government benefits and

Walter Koenig Makes A Plea For A Troubled Son

Kirk Cameron and Andrew Koenig on Growing Pains

Walter Koenig is best known for his role as Pavel Chekov, the Star Trek crew member who’s look was modeled after Davy Jones. These days Walter has taken on the role of worried father searching for a missing son. Walter’s son, Andrew Koenig, best know for his role as “Boner” on the sitcom Growing Pains, was reported missing by his parents on February 18th, two days after Andrew, 41, failed to return home from a trip to visit friends in Canada. Spurred by a troubling note for their son, The Koenigs reported him missing to the Vancouver police. Although recently Andrew had taken a renewed interest in his career and was actively seeking projects, he seemed despondent and his attitude had changed. Three weeks ago Koenig got rid of nearly all of his possessions and moved out of his Venice, California home. There has been no activity on his cell phone since February 16. His parents are praying that he just needed to get away for a while and that everything is all right.

Update: After I wrote the story of Andrew’s disappearance, it was announced that his body had been found hanging from a tree in a Vancouver Park. Andrew had taken his own life. The Koenigs pleaded with the public to reach out to friends and loved ones who may be at risk for severe depression and suicide. They also urged those suffering depression to seek help and know that no matter what, many people care for them. Our deepest sympathies go out to the Koenig family.

Depression is NOT feeling sorry for yourself as a lot of people think. Depression is SERIOUS! It is a feeling of hopelessness and sadness beyond anything you can imagine. If you know someone who is suffering from depression give them all the support and understanding you can. 10

Hard To Believe By Janet Litterio

once again…I wanted to be free from all this!!! There is nothing better than going to an outdoor concert under the stars on a beautiful July evening, providing Mother Nature cooperates. But wait….this day was to be the light at the end of the tunnel…how can it begin a bit dark? Hard to believe that rain may extinguish the light…………… I started my day at physical therapy and I’m telling everyone that I was going out to see Davy Jones later that day. The PT clinic has The Oldies station on the radio, so I kept my ears peeled for a weather forecast…..rain…..great. Leaving PT, I went straight to an appt. with my orthopedic surgeon…..dark, but no rain….whew….on to West Chicago…..after a nap. I’m a believer

We all have our lights at the end of our tunnels…..that is, something to look forward to while undergoing something perhaps unpleasant. In the months preceding July 10, I had undergone knee replacement surgery and subsequent physical therapy. My surgeon suggested I focus on a light at the end of the tunnel to help me get through this ordeal…. I got it….David’s show in West Chicago, IL on July 10, 2009 was the light at the end of my tunnel. When July 10th rolled around, it was hard to believe THE day had finally arrived. This would be the first time I would go out somewhere that didn’t have to do with knees, surgeons, physical therapy…I could feel like a real person 11

that the forecasters would be wrong….. Early afternoon, I heard something knocking at my door……could that possibly be the sound of love come knockin’ at my door? IT WA RAIN……….drats. Rain and outdoor concerts don’t mix well…..but the forecasters were saying it will clear up by late afternoon. I thought they were daydream believers. We contacted our friends playing do we/don’t we go game………..later in the afternoon, the rain did stop and the sun shone brightly once again…….Mother Nature must be a fan of Davy Jones…. we got in the car for our trek to West Chicago. Hard to believe it had been raining, but the light was now shining brightly at the end of

the tunnel. YIPPEE!!!! We arrived at the park….have cane, will travel. We proceeded to the stage area to set down our chairs. Walking to the stage area from our car, I begin to hear music….must be the warm up band. Good, we’ll meet up with our friends and have some entertainment until THE show starts. Getting a little closer……..this song sounds quite familiar, ears tuning in a bit more….. odd that the warm up band would be playing a Monkees tune….the music sounded REALLY GOOD!!!! Closer still…….my goodness, the voice that’s singing sounds rather familiar…much like Davy Jones……..how could that be? My main concentration at this point was walking/getting to the area without stepping in a pud-

dle, falling, or tripping over my cane. I stop a moment to take a breather and the lightbulb goes off……….I bet that IS Davy Jones singing……could it be sound check? It seemed like an eternity until we got to the stage area… and my light bulb moment was right…it WAS Davy Jones singing….our man was back in town. Hard to believe the timing. Sound check was just finishing up when we arrived. We greeted a few people, met up with our friends, rested, ate, and waited for THE show. We were looking for Mary, but she was trying to figure out where she was goin’ to. The show started…David walked on stage with that twinkle in his eye, full of his usual energy and enthusiasm. I do remember

some new jokes, but being a bit on sensory overload, I’m sorry that did not retain them to share them with you. He sang the songs we all know and love to hear and sing along with. I was more than delighted to hear 3 tunes added to the set list, none of which I had heard at a concert before this. Betcha you’ll be able to figure out the 3 new tunes in reading this rendition of the show……Mary Mary, When Love Comes Knockin’ At Your Door, and one of my favorite Monkee’s tunes-Hard to Believe. What a treat, indeed!!!!!!! I was also very happy to hear Let Them Be Little….that is such a pretty song. Your Man Is Back In Town seems to be a favorite of David’s fans in Chicagoland, or any town where he sings that song…hey 13

Monkee Shines

hey, he’s comin’ back to my town. From the beginning of the show to the end went by in No Time…which is always a fun song, despite it being the end of the showL. This show, for me was so uplifting after having been through such an ordeal. It was the perfect light at the end of the tunnel.

After the show, we talked with some friends, sadly we were unable to talk with others, but nevertheless it was a GREAT show. ..one of the most uplifting outdoor shows I had seen in a while. It was hard to believe it was here and over in no time!!!!!

May be the famine or the feast May turn each day into a Heaven or a Hell She may be the mirror of my dreams A smile reflected in a stream She may not be what she may seem Inside her shell....

I know you're an angel Heaven is in your eyes A smile from your lips brings the summer sunshine Tears from your eyes bring the rain I feel your touch, your warm embrace And I'm in heaven again

She, who always seems so happy in a crowd Whose eyes can be so private and so proud No one's allowed to see them when they cry She maybe the love that cannot hope to last May come to me from shadows in the past That I remember 'till the day I die

You are my special angel Through eternity I'll have my special angel Here to watch over me (A smile from your lips brings the summer sunshine) (The tears from your eyes bring the rain) I feel your touch, your warm embrace And I'm in heaven again

She maybe the reason I survive The why and wherefore I'm alive The one I care for through the rough and ready years

You are my special angel Through eternity I'll have my special angel Here to watch over me

Me, I'll take the laughter and her tears And make them all my souvenirs For where she goes I've got to be The meaning of my life is she She The meaning of my life is she.

I feel your touch, your warm embrace And I'm in heaven again

My Special Angel

Lou Handman) Are you lonesome tonight, Do you miss me tonight? Are you sorry we drifted apart? Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?

Once I had a secret love That lived within the heart of me All too soon my secret love Became impatient to be free

Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare? Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there? Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again? Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

Now I shout it from the highest hills Even told the golden daffodils At last my heart's an open door And my secret love's no secret anymore

So I told the friendly star The way that dreamers often do Just how wonderful you are And why I'm so in love with you

Now I shout it from the highest hills Even told the golden daffodils At last my heart's an open door And my secret love's no secret anymore My secret love's no secret anymore

Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again? Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

My secret love's no secret anymore

Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

Well, I never felt more like cryin' all night 'Cause everything's wrong, there ain't nothin' right without you You got me singin' the blues. Well, the moon and stars no longer shine And the dream is gone that I thought was mine There's nothin' left for me to do But cry, over you

To your arms someday I’ll return to stay Till then I’ll remember too Every bright star we made wishes upon Love me always promise always Ooooh You’ll remember too I’ll remember you I’ll remember you I’ll remember you

Chris Andrews and I chose all the material. Chris created all these tracks except for “This Guy’s In Love” and I formaned[English spelling?] the works of everything here. I worked alongside Tim Gordon, whose studio and engineering produced the voal [English spelling?] sound. Tim added his touch on vibes and other instruments. Thanks once again for all the efforts and time everyone contributed. It is what it is. Change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change. I soldier on.

Because if that little postscript, David’s new CD titled”She” was almost heisted and designated as my 2010 Mother’s Day gift ( as opposed to my belated birthday gift or Christmas gift). Fortunately, the management believed me when I said I hadn’t intended to wait that long to listen to it! The liner notes on the flip side of David’s NEW CD are (and I quote): Andrews and Jones (the two dodgers make up the team . With the advent of so many artists these days delving back into the past musically, my effort here seems relatively “follow the leader” initially, but ut us far from it, Born out of the lack of insensitivity by record companies and writer’s comments about my musical ability, I silenced these with this portrayal of songs that my father would have sung to my mother. My father’s hands and my mother’s heart now belong to me.

David Jones It is absolutely ”Wonderful” to hear David record NEW tunes! (Editor note: But what happened to “You Sang To Me”? I’m still waiting!) On this release are: Fly Me To The Moon She Special Angel Lonesome Tonight Secret Love Always On My Mind 20

Living Doll I’ll Remember You Singing The Blues This Guy’s In Love Cry Wonderful World

to last May come to me from shadows in the past That I remember 'till the day I die She maybe the reason I survive The why and wherefore I'm alive The one I care for through the rough and ready years

Overall, I found the choices of material David selected to recreate very interesting. The collection of tunes are very mellow and introspective. I listened to all of the songs repetitively (It’s a science, you know.) and transcribed the words. To give you an overall feel, the lyrics to “She” are as follows:

Me, I'll take the laughter and her tears And make them all my souvenirs For where she goes I've got to be The meaning of my life is she She The meaning of my life is she.

She

I applaud David for “Taking a Giant Step” outside the realm of Monkees’ classics. While I certainly enjoy Monkees’ standards, it’s great to hear him perform something old, something new, something borrowed, something “Blues”,

She may be the face I can't forget The trace of pleasure or regret Maybe my treasure or the price I have to pay She may be the song that summer sings May be the chill that autumn brings May be a hundred different things Within the measure of a day She may be the beauty or the beast May be the famine or the feast May turn each day into a Heaven or a Hell She may be the mirror of my dreams A smile reflected in a stream She may not be what she may seem Inside her shell....

It is hard to select a favorite when you put a chocolate lover into a candy store. However, perhaps my top pick would be “This Guy’s In Love”. While it’s not easy to reinvent someone else’s music, I think David (and company) pay homage to the original artist [Cindy informed me that would be “Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass” (not to be confused with the various artists who performed “Danny Boy”].

She, who always seems so happy in a crowd Whose eyes can be so private and so proud No one's allowed to see them when they cry She maybe the love that cannot hope

Last but not least, I’m glad David included “Wonderful World” in this package. It’s a different version than I am accustomed to with the likes of Louis Armstrong bit I equate that to the vintage discussion David had with Charlie Smalls. Rhythmically 21

speaking, David’s “soul” is on the accented beats one and three as opposed to the “Motown soul” with the accented beats on the two and four. [ Speaking of “Some Like It Lukewarm”, it elicited fond memories ti hear David include “Secret Love” on this CD. It reminded me of the lovely duet of “Secret Love” David performed with Deana Martin (whi guest starred on that Monkees’ epi-

sode) at the Arcadia in St. Charles in January 2007.)

The Best Time I Ever Had At A Davy Jones Concert By Donna Corbin right in front of the stage. I had my sign ready for him to see.

The show was on 3-1310 at Busch Gardens and I was getting myself together for the Davy show. I got there early, of course, and the first show was at 11:30 so i got in line to wait for the show to start. I took with me a picture that I had made that I had hanging on my wall and I got a lot of attention that day having that with me. They had let us in for the show my son and I were at

The show started and it was a great show as always. I love the new song where Jessica came out to dance . The new song is great. Its called Amore, a very nice song. Davy shook his butt a bit. They looked very happy. I’m so happy for him. They said he would be

After that I skipped the next show for my son to see around Busch Gardens but made sure I was back for the signing. So I get in line for the signing and Johnny Blair was standing there. He spoke with me a bit and he was very cool guy. It was my turn. When I got up there my son asked Davy if he knew who I was. Davy was ,like, of course .I laughed. It was very cute. I got my picture with him after 25 yrs of waiting for one but, hey, it was worth the wait. After that I went and saw the last show at 3:30 still very cool show. I cant get enough of seeing him but that’s ok . So after this show I stood in line again for another chance to talk with Davy again. Yes i am greedy, and he signed something else for me and he shook my son’s hand. Then he told him it was very nice to meet him and Davy said it was very nice to meet him also . My son said he is going to the May show he liked it very much.

out for autographs, he would be signing after the second show, which made me a very happy person. I haven’t got to do that since the 90's. That was the last time I had a chance to speak with him. After the show was over someone walked up to me and asks if they could take a picture of what I had. I said yes, of course. They said this would be for Davy which made me feel very good. They took a picture of me holding the sign I had and one of me in my Davy shirt. Then she asked, “Would you like that signed?” I was, like, sure thanks. They took it back and had it signed for me. She showed me pictures of him signing it and also holding it up it was very cool, she told me she would email me the pictures.

I couldn’t wait for this show and Davy and the band 25

I thank Davy and his band for the best show I think I have gone to since I was 16 yrs old and now even 24 yrs later I still love to see him and enjoy everything they do so thanks again for the best day ever. A very happy fan,

Guest Blog on "The Checkup" in the Washington Post

Peter Tork's Cancer, In His Own Words Late last year, after a few months of my not swallowing in a normal way, a friend mentioned that my voice sounded funny, kind of squawky and nasal. I'd meant to get it checked out, but her observation pushed me to doing something about it sooner rather than later. I went to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who sprayed my nostrils with anesthetic and sent a length of fiber-optic cable up my nose and down my throat. He came back with bad news. There was a growth on the lower region of my tongue. He suspected squamous cell carcinoma.

ly rare cancer, usually occurring in the salivary glands. Mine occurred on the lower part of my tongue; that's even rarer. I wound up in New York at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where one Dr. Jatin Shah told me I should get surgery as soon as possible. I thought about it a second and said I wasn't doing anything that afternoon.... Dr. Shah laughed and amended: as soon as practicable. That turned out to be the following Wednesday, which was March 4. I woke up from that surgery with another tube up my nose and down my throat -- this one for feeding me. About three months later I began a followup course of radiation at a hightech hospital in Boston, where they rev up a cyclotron and pipe protons down the hall and through a giant metal tube into my throat. (Remember electrons, neutrons and protons? Those.)

I don't count myself as being afraid to die, but the news hit me like a fist to the chest. A subsequent biopsy and pathology exam showed that I had adenoid cystic carcinoma. Adenoid cystic carcinoma, ACC to the cognoscenti, is a relative28

Monkee Shines

My friend Therra Gwyn, who is also my editor and publicist, suggested that if the news of my cancer seeped out without my having a say in it, it would most likely get so distorted that there'd be 30 stories out there, none of them with more than a tangential relationship with the actuality. Better she said -- and I agreed -- to tell the story myself, as best I could. Besides making sure the record was straight, telling the story out loud on a Web site and Facebook page might help the world (or that part of it that was interested) relax some fears about cancer in general and might boost attention to adenoid cystic carcinoma in particular. Also, it might just help me keep a right-sized attitude about life and myself. Otherwise, you know, it'd be like: I'm a celebrity, get me offa this planet! Can't have that.

is supposed to be hoarseness. The radiologist told me, "Well, you play guitar and you sing. Perhaps you won't sing, but maybe you'll play guitar a lot more." I recovered very quickly after my surgery, and I've been hoping that my better-than-average constitution will keep the worst effects of radiation at bay. My voice and energy still seem to be in decent shape, so maybe I can pull these gigs off after all. Just in case, though, I've invited some friends to join me, including my friend Lauren, a worldclass slide guitar player. People will be so dazzled by her that they won't notice whether I'm doing well. I'm also bringing in belly dancers, and I'm expecting a fly-over by the Royal Canadian Air Force. Maybe elephants. I mean to do those shows.

As of this writing, I'm just beginning to feel the effects of the second course of radiation, a bit of soreness on the tongue, some unpleasant effects when swallowing. So far, not too bad.

By Peter Tork

I have a couple of performance dates lined up, which I've opted not to cancel. I know I'm taking a chance here, because one of the side effects of the radiation 29

The Theory Of Evolution

Darwin Was Right!

By Cindy Bryant

The PFG Theory of Relativity ( Not to be confused with Einstein’s Theory ) Some days when things are running good or if machines are down at work, I have a lot of time to think….much too much time but then a mind is a terrible thing to waste. In the early days of the PFG Road Crew we were on the road nearly every week to see “our guys”. Some trips we would drive 18 hours to see a show and then turn around as soon as the show was over and drive 18 hours back. Ah, to be young and foolish again...as opposed to being old and foolish. To entertain ourselves on those long drives we created The Theory Of Evolution game long before they were playing 6 Degrees From Kevin Bacon. It’s a challenge to link ANYTHING/ ANYONE to the Monkees in a series of steps. The more ridiculous and intricate the better. At work I have taken this game to an even higher level to prove not only Darwin’s theory but also “The Circle Of Life”. I STARTED with the Monkees and ENDED with the Monkees. First a couple of really simple theories:

Kevin Bacon is Monkees related. 1. Kevin appeared on an episode of Will and Grace. 2. Will and Grace featured Sean Hayes as Jack. 3. Sean Hayes played Jerry Lewis in an biographic movie about Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. 4. Dean Martin’s daughter is Deana Martin. 5. Deana Martin guess starred on “The Monkees” episode “Some Like It Luke Warm”. 6. “The Monkees “ was a TV show about the band, The Monkees. 7. Therefore Kevin Bacon is Monkees related. Sandra Bullock is Monkees related. 1. Sandra Bullock starred in the movie “The Lake House.” 2. “The Lake House” also starred Keanu Reeves. 3. Keanu Reeves was also in the movie “Something’s Gotta Give”. 4. “Something’s Gotta Give also starred Jack Nicholson. 5. Jack Nicholson was one of the writers for the movie “Head”. 30

Monkee Shines

6. The movie “Head” was a Monkees movie. 7. Therefore Sandra Bullock is Monkees related.

starred Jo Voight. 16. Jon Voight is Angelina Jolie’s father. 17. Angelina Jolie’s “domestic partner” is Brad Pitt. 18. Brad Pitt was in “Ocean’s Eleven”. 19. Ocean’s Eleven also starred Julia Roberts. 20. Julia Roberts was also in Notting Hill.” 21. Notting Hill also starred Hugh Grant. 22. Hugh Grant was in “9 Months”. 23. “9 Months” also starred Tom Arnold. 24. Tom Arnold was married to Roseanne Barr. 25. Roseanne Barr had a TV show called “Roseanne”. 26. The show “Roseanne’ featured a recurring role played by Tim Curry. 27. Tim Curry was in the cult classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. 28. “RHPS” starred a very young Susan Sarrandon. 29. Susan Sarrandon’s “domestic partner” is Tim Robbins. 30. Tim Robbins starred in “The Shawshank Redemption”. 31. The Shawshank Redemption” was written by Stephen King. 32. Stephen King wrote a book called “The Regulators”. 33. In “The Regulators” a family is driving down the road listening to “Last Train To Clarksville”. 34. “LTTC” is a Monkees song. 35. Therefore the Monkees are Monkees related!

Ok, are you ready for the “circle”? The Monkees are Monkees related (duh?!...Wait, wait, it’s not that simple!) 1. The Monkees were in a TV show about a fictional band called “The Monkees”. 2. The TV show “The Monkees” was created after Rafelson and Schneider saw “A Hard Days Night.” 3. A Hard Days Night featured the Beatles. 4. Loren Michaels once invited the Beatles on “Saturday Night Live” live on the air. Paul and John were actually watching and considered the offer. 5. SNL starred Gilda Radnor. 6. Gilda Radnor was married to Gene Wilder 7. Gene Wilder starred in the movie “Young Frankenstein”. 8. “Young Frankenstein” was the brain child of Mel Brooks. 9. Mel Brooks was married to Ann Bancroft. 10. Ann Bancroft starred in the movie “The Graduate”. 11. “The Graduate” also starred a very young Dustin Hoffman. 12. Dustin Hoffman was in “Rainman”. 13. “Rainman” also starred Tom Cruise. 14. Tom Cruise was in the movie “Mission Impossible.” 15. “Mission Impossible” also 31

Mike News Austin Society Honors Nesmith

by Andy Lauer (February 17, 2010) . The Austin Film Society will present its Warren Skaaren Lifetime Achievement Award to Michael Nesmith at the 10th anniversary Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards on March 11, 2010. The event honors Texans who have made a significant contribution to the film and media industry. Nesmith, born in Houston and raised in Dallas, is perhaps best known for his contributions to The Monkees band and TV show, as well as for his solo career as a musician, television personality, writer and philanthropist. In the mid-1970s, Nesmith created the Nickelodeon cable network television program “Pop Clips,” which was subsequently developed for an MTV show. As a musician, Nesmith is known for his single “Cruisin” and his Grammy-winning music video “Elephant Parts.” In addition, he has served as the executive producer for the movies “Repo Man,” “Tapeheads” and “Timerider.” Nesmith is currently readying a virtual-reality music musical performance space called Videoranch 3D for for SXSW. Nesmith will be honored along with

Lukas Haas, Bruce McGill and Quentin Tarantino (Tom Mix honorary Texan Award) at the ceremony in Austin. Peter News And Dates the festival Saturday with his band Shoe Suede Blues. The idea of Tork playing the blues seems a far cry from his hits with the Monkees from the 1960s. But in fact, he has always played and appreciated the blues, dating back to his early years listening to his mom’s Louis Jordan records and other jump-blues sounds dating to the 1940s.

SSB — March 13, 2010 8:30 PM Centenary College Hacketstown, NY

Tork cites the legendary blues acts such as Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, but he also notes the blues stylings in the early recordings of such rockers as Little Richard, Fats Domino and Elvis Presley.

Hackettstown getting a welcome case of the blues

What draws Tork to the blues is its therapeutic value. “You go to a dance club nowadays, and that music is little hitting yourself in the head with a hammer,” he says. “It’s music that lets you hide from your life. The blues is different. The blues is healing. The blues will fix you. The blues has that quality of being accepted, of being home.”

Story Written By Bill Nutt HACKETTSTOWN — Centenary College will have the blues next weekend, and that should make music fans happy. On Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, the college will host the first Centenary Mini-Blues Festival, with performances by six acts. In addition, two local mainstays – Jack Tannehill and Mike Esposito – will play matinee shows at Marley’s Gotham Grill on Main Street, and Charlie Brown’s will be the site of postshow parties each evening.

The blues also has a way of bringing people together. The closing act on Friday night is the duo of Peter Karp and Sue Foley, two established blues-rock artists who met only about a year ago at a blues festival in Ottawa. A meeting led to a duet on one of Karp’s records, which turned into a series of e-mail correspondences and a friendship. The results: a full-blown CD called “He Said

Micky News And Dates Brief Encounter With ... Monkee Micky Dolenz Date: 25 February 2010 His post-Monkees career has included multiple appearances in myriad American sitcoms as well as theatre credits including A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Aida and The Point!, which came to the West End during the late 1970s.

I think the thing that I found most touching about him is his relationship with his daughter. I have four daughters, so I’m sure that it immediately struck a chord. So that was very appealing, and of course that show stopping number, “Timeless to Me”.

How does it feel to be returning to London’s West End? Are you kidding me? It's wonderful! I just love doing musical theatre in general and, besides Broadway, you don’t get any better than this. I’m thrilled to be here, both in Hairspray and in the West End.

Do you get on with Brian Conley, who plays your wife Edna? Well so far he’s been incredibly supportive and very gracious. And he looks great in a fat suit!

How did your involvement in Hairspray come about? I said to my English agent, "you should look around and see if anything comes up" and she said that they were looking for a new Wilbur in Hairspray. I’ve been aware of the piece for a while, and loved it - so I came over and, luckily, they offered it to me.

You’ve performed in London before, in the late 70's. How would you compare your experience then to now? That was one of the first things that I had done in musical theatre. I doubt that I was very good! Since then, I've got into this more intensively, and realised that I had to brush up on my theatre skills; television and film are

What do you like about Wilbur? 37

very different disciplines. Growing up in Los Angeles doing film and TV, I didn’t have the same kind of background I might have if I had grown up in New York, where theatre is just everywhere. All the actors and singers in New York are basically founded in theatre, whereas in Los Angeles it’s TV and film.

of songs, including the Spice Girls, the Monkees and the Rolling Stones. It just doesn’t necessarily equate to a successful musical theatre experience. In the States, there have been many attempts at wonderful catalogues, including the Beach Boys, but they just don’t work. It’s because they just depend on the popularity of the songs and there isn’t a coherent and dramatic storyline. If you look at Mamma Mia!, you could say "well that’s just great ABBA music", but I don’t think that show would have lasted as long as it did if they had just strung together ABBA tunes. That story is the story of a little girl trying to find her father. You actually care about the people. So the short answer is, I don’t know. Then again, the people who wrote those songs were just an amazing stable of writers, and I was blessed to have been able to sing them. In fact, I’m just coming out with a CD called King

After Hairspray, do you see yourself performing in another London musical? Absolutely. I’d love doing more in the West End. I did Aida in New York, and that was when I realised I really love doing this. Funnily enough, when I started doing this musical theatre stuff on a more consistent basis, I realised that The Monkees Show was kind of a little musical theatre on television. If you look at an episode of The Monkees, we were singing, dancing, and doing bits of comedy with a scripted plot, very much like a musical. You get hooked to the kind of adrenaline buzz that you get from being on stage, live. I’ve done so much film and television where if you screw it up, somebody just says ‘cut’ and you do it again. Obviously that doesn’t happen in theatre, so there’s definitely that edge that everybody probably gets a little addicted to. What are your thoughts on a potential Monkees musical? Oh there’s been talk of that for years. There are lots of groups that have wonderful catalogues 38

thoughtful. Hello Cleveland is short, obnoxious and in your face. If you’ve ever wondered what kind of an album I would write if I was in a really pissy mood, wonder no more.”
The CD, which Marsland describes as “an angry, satirical, rocking and darkly funny album that takes a dead aim at pop culture and the state of rock and roll,” features Marsland’s East Coast touring band — bassist Teresa Cowles, keyboard player Charlie Zayleskie and drummer Jon Braun — along with Cleveland’s Bill Stone, formerly of Paranoid Lovesick, on backing vocalsIt features tunes like “The Day I Bought Micky Dolenz a Beer,” “40-YearOld College Student,” “Dave Matthews Again,” “Sports Bar” and “My Name Is Jonas Brothers.” A video for the latter is currently posted at Marsland’s website.

for a Day, a tribute album to Carole King that’s going to be coming out while I’m doing Hairspray. Hairspray continues at the Shaftesbury Theatre until 28 March 2010. A new national tour launches at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on 30 March 2010.  by Alex Mangini

Adam Marsland Says "Hello Cleveland" PM The album recorded in one marathon session in Northeast Ohio late last year by Los Angeles based singersongwriter Adam Marsland and his band is now available. Titled Hello Cleveland, its 14 raw, immediate tunes were written in a few days preceding the band’s gig at the Barking Spider in early October and recorded two days later in less than eight hours with engineer Bill Korecky at Mars Recording. Marsland’s best known for Beach Boys-influenced power-pop, like that on his album Go West, which came out in the middle of last year. He says, “One might wonder why a new album less than six months after Go West came out. Hello Cleveland came out spontaneously on the road, borne of the frustrations of touring and just dealing. It’s been called “the anti-Go West” by a few people. Go West is long, diverse, layered,

Marsland’s pressing only 500 copies of the CD — retail-ready, glassmastered, professionally reproduced — and is selling them only through his website. “When they’re gone, they’re gone,” he says. —Anastasia Pantsios .
