From the Editor! so far, I have conducted interviews with Bobby, Davy, and Micky, as well as over a hundred other interviews with those involved on stage, backstage, and in front of the stage. I am putting the call out to any of you who might have concert or other memories, information, anecdotes, pictures, articles, listings, pretty much anything you can offer to help in the charting of this sadly under-documented period of history in the guys' careers. Big gaps so far include: specific dates for the first three months of DJBH's career (late June 1975 to Sept 75); info on any solo Dolenz shows in the 1970s; and info on Christopher Cloud's live performances. Also, I am looking to interview Alan Green, if anyone can advise me on how to make contact, or pass my contact info along. It is: Mark Kleiner, 332 Fairmont Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7M 4P1 CANADA, email: djbh35@rocketmail.com, phone: (306) 683-8619. Although I cannot offer financial renumeration for your assistance, I promise you full credit and heartfelt thanks in helping bring this story to life.

Dear Gang, I’m turning this space over to a special guest this time. Cindy Hello to all the Purple Flower Gang. My name is Mark Kleiner and I am a second generation fan from the heartlands of Canada, with a seriously special place in my heart for the Monkees during the 1970s. Last October, I began work on an article telling the story of Dolenz Jones Boyce and Hart, setting my sights on having it out in time for the 35th anniversary of DJBH's live debut, at Six Flags in St Louis on June 21, 1975. However, I quickly realized I had a bigger story on my hands than an article would allow, and I expanded my project into a full scale book, with chapters also chronicling the careers of Micky, Davy, Tommy and Bobby during the preDJBH period of 1970-75, and postDJBH years of 1976-81.

The Doors Into Summer (Imagine that: wrong group)

By Bonnie Borgh With a little help from her friends Dawn Hoffman, Janet Litterio, and Cindy Bryant

Dawn, Bonnie, Janet, and Cindy...23 years of Monkee friendship Bonnie: As I wrote in “It’s In The Maracas” my recent Doors pre-occupation stemmed from simply watching a PBS fundraiser titled Ed Sullivan’s Greatest Rock and Roll Classics.

Are Strange and these Strange Days indeed. So..

are

When Craig said, “You know, they (The Doors) were really under appreciated. They were really good. That Jim Morrison was really good looking don’t you think?” My thoughts went from “Are you out of your mind?” to “He’s a long-haired hippie with skin tight black leather pants and a…and a…and a face and physique like Michelangelo’s “David.” Coupled with the fact that it’s been eighteen long months since I’ve seen the real David, my defenses were in such a weakened state, I had helplessly succumbed to such a perversion SLASH diversion. People

Bonnie: Help me, Dave Can’t you see that I have somehow strayed It’s those maracas that he played Why won’t you tell me he’s not dead? What about the tea that you once made?

Cindy: Did you mention SLASH? Where is SLASH? I miss SLASH!

Fortunately, fate intervened again. I left a message for Cindy because I had just heard David Cassidy was scheduled to appear at the Isle Of Capri in Bettendorf on April 23rd. I thought she might like to see the Minor Babe. She called me back later that day and said, “I can top your 15

David Cassidy with David Jones!” I said, “What? Where? When?” Janet: I like that kind of poker!! Cindy: I WIN! No matter how you look at it a Jones beats a Cassidy like a royal flush beats a pair. Bonnie: David was schedule to appear at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, Illinois (one of our favorite venues) on Saturday, June 05,2010 at 8:30 pm. Cindy and I assigned Dawn the dubious task of securing tickets for is, and she scored front row center seats for us! That Girl needs a raise!

Dawn, Bonnie and friend at the Arcada

Cindy: I do! I do love St. Charles! It is so full of history and the people are so nice. Ron Onesti treats everyone like royaltyand I think he may be the only one who actually literally looks up to David! LOL! Bonnie: During the interim, we also learned that David was slated to play a free concert (The Price Is Right Tour) at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa (which would have been the date of my parent’s 60th wedding anniversary.) Dawn: As I sit down to add my Schtuff….the True Oldies Station played “Mary, Mary”) I wanna go to Iowa SF, but can’t….vacation all I ever wanted…vacation all I ever needed… once again, imagine that, wrong group!

The marquee outside the Arcada

Dawn: Don’t you just love the Arcada??

Cindy: Aw…Dawn…..

Janet: The whole area is so beautiful. We actually were able to see it now that we weren’t blinded by snow, wind and ice.

Bonnie: Meanwhile back at the ranch, Cindy arrived at our house at promptly 9:00 am on June 05. I even washed the car on Friday 16

well as to rendezvous with Tom and Janet from Lockport at 5:30 pm for dinner at Onesti’s restaurant. By the time we landed in St. Charles around 12:00 pm, the partially cleared and the sun appeared!

once again attempt to check in early at The Hotel Baker. It would seem our basic twodouble beds room was unavailable until 3:00 pm. However, after a somewhat lengthy consultation (I thought, ‘How long can this take? Either the room is ready or it isn’t.’) the hotel desk clerk offered us a two room suite for the same price and we could check in immediately. Cindy and I thought that was a offer too good to refuse especially after the $25 early check-in fee we were subjected to in November of 2008. There was even a free continental breakfast. Unfortunately there were no swimming pools or movies stars.

Dawn: the sun and the heat and the humidity…really Mother Nature? Janet: Chicago weather at it’s finest………and worst. Cindy: What is that darn PFG motto? Neither rain nor hail nor sleet….no, that’s the post office! We always get our man….no, that’s the Mounties! Oh yeah! Together we will fight, together we will win, together we will find ourselves in places we have no business being in!

Cindy: But according to Tom and the hotel personnel we did have a ghost!

According to the front desk, David was not a guest at the hotel. Therefore, we decided to transport our trinkets and purple flowers and hand deliver them to the Arcada Theatre.

room. Dawn: Yes Bonnie…your obsession is apparent. Cindy: You should have seen her face light up when we passed Morrison, Illinois on the way to St. Charles! Bonnie: From there, we found some little out of the way place where nobody goes called “Smitty’s” to eat lunch. They served deli sandwiches, and I had a very good tuna on a croissant. Cindy treated us to “Smitty’s” homemade cookies. We the returned to our suite to chit chat and make a costume change for the really big shoe.

Thankfully, the Doors at the Arcada Theatre were open! We approached the ticket booth and asked to speak with Ron Onesti who unfortunately unavailable. However, Romy, the woman in charge of marketing, quickly appeared and was most accommodating. We exchanged pleasantries, and she told us she also hailed from (Dubuque) Iowa. She said she would be more than happy to transfer our package and flowers to David’s dressing

Dawn: Bonnie, your brain is a sponge….you remember every little detail!

Tom and Janet Litterio join the poarty Bonnie: Cindy spoke on the phone with (Tom and) Janet who planned to meet us at the hotel prior to our 5:30 pm dinner reservation. Cindy, Dawn, and I decided to meet them in the lobby. It was there we spoke with a kindly gentleman who shared with us a bit of history of The Hotel Baker. It seems George Burns and Gracie Allen as well as former President John F. Kennedy were guests there, and Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, and Lawrence Welk played in the ballroom! Let’s not forget the aura from the little conversation we had with David Jones in that very same lobby.

Phot by Cindy Bryant

we decided to walk over to Onesti’s to have dinner, Once again, they had The Davy Jones “Daydream Believer” Menu. I decided on the Rigatoni al Pollo, Pesto y Pomodoro. It was very good. Cindy: Me too! Yum! Dawn: All I can recall is dinner was good and so was the company Cindy: We tried to free our waiter and take him to the concert but his slave driving boss (Ron Onesti) insisted he wanted (had to) work. We even offered to come back and do the dishes after!

Dawn: The Hotel Baker really is a piece of history as is the Arcada Theatre....

Bonnie: Of course, it was raining upon departure, and Tom kindly offered to get the car

and drive us all back to the hotel. Thanks again, Tom!

Bonnie: The opening act appeared on stage at 8:35 pm. I honestly cannot tell you who they were and deciphering the words to their songs was very difficult.

Cindy: Thank you Tom! Dawn: once again rain, REALLY Mother Nature and I forgot my umbrella……but thanks Tom we were kinda like “Riders on the Storm”…see Bonnie now you have me doing it!!

Janet: I’m glad to hear this…my hearing is good, and I had no idea what songs they were playing.

Cindy: Hey Rainy Jane!

Cindy: Well, in their defense we ARE a little spoiled and we only came there to see one act!

Janet: Tom’s very kind that way. Cindy: A gentleman with 4 dates!

Bonnie: However, Cindy, Dawn, and I managed to entertain ourselves with random thoughts on an itty bitty notebook. Dawn suggested we include some of those comments. One of the songs was titled something like, ‘I Don’t Want To Start Over’. Frankly, we didn’t want them to, either. Dawn thought the drummer looked like Cheech or Chong and asked which one I thought he was. I never could tell those two apart.

Bonnie: We freshened up a bit at the hotel. I checked my voice mail. I had three messages (two from Hannah). On one message she had said it was raining really hard at home, and she said she hoped it wasn’t raining ‘on my little Davy Jones parade’ there. I don’t understand: She’s not a Jim Morrison fan, either. Cindy: There was a parade? I saw a limo but no parade!

Cindy: I’ve met Tommy Chong. It was Cheech….definitely Cheech!

Bonnie: With umbrellas in hand once more, we ventured to the Arcada Theatre. It was a bit steamy in there and not just because of Jones’ impending presence. Due to the remodeling being undertaken at the theatre, the air conditioner had become inoperable. In combination with manufactured smoke (special effects) rolling off the stage floor, it felt like being in a sauna.

Dawn: We want Davy, We want Davy…really….not to be rude, but really…. Bonnie: David appeared on stage at 9:23 pm (on my watch). Dawn: not a minute too soon! Bonnie: He performed the following:

Dawn: Hot, Hot Hot….

Dawn: you forgot the 10 minute 21

We love the monologues

It’s hard to say whether David thinks, ‘I wish those (Purple Flower Gang) people would just go away!” or “I wonder what they’ve come up with this time?” However, he is always so appreciative, and we are so honored to be acknowledged.

“Davy Monologue” before singing a tune…he really is quite the comedian….I had to laugh at the accent he used for the cab driver….so funny

Janet: What did you give him? Cindy: The usual “Gang” stuff… purple roses ( lavender really) ,an Iowa golf shirt (very “Charlie” from “Two And A Half Men”,) dark chocolate Hershey kisses wrapped in PURPLE foil, a book of Etiquette for a Cheeky little Monkey ( I thought that was spelled Monkee!), and some Pro Monkee Butt Powder (as opposed to Anti Monkey Butt powder) …you know, the usual “Gang” silliness.

Janet: Yes, the cab driver’s accent was very funny!!!! Kind of like a talking spider….if spiders could talk. Cindy: All of the Cabbies were funny but the Indian was the best! Bonnie: I’m A Believer Consider Yourself Valleri An intro to Hey Hey We’re The Monkees Papa Jean’s Blues

Bonnie: Rainy Jane--Dawn: Very appropriate Rain song for the day….. I had been looking forward to seeing David’s new act on stage, but unfortunately it seemed his new wife, Jessica, was not with him to perform her flamenco dancing. Perhaps we’ll see her perform another time.

Bonnie: Most of the members of The Davy Jones Band were present.

Ron Onesti, made an announcement on stage and invited the audience to an after-show party at Onesti’s Lounge. The Gang thought it might be fun to gather together for lemonade.

Bonnie: We didn’t see the Major Babe. It was nice, however, to say “Hello” to Jimmy. It’s nice to see him back with the band. It’s just not the same without Jerry, though.

Dawn: or Flaming Cheese after flagging down the waiter….lol

Cindy: Ah yes, last comic standing…I give you Comedian Eric Beyondo…just a little advice Eric…don’t give up your music career just yet.

Bonnie: Cindy and I arrived home safely about 11:30 am. We had just enough time for a quick and uninterrupted viewing of The Doors performance of “Wild Child” and “Touch Me” from the 1968 Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour before meeting Hannah at 12:00 pm at our church to pick her up so she could join us for lunch at Arby’s. (We had a gift card to use, of course.) Unfortunately Craig had a meeting after church so he was unable to join us to recap our adventures.

Bonnie: The drive home for Cindy and I was also uneventful except for the pit-stop we made at the Shell station in Rock Falls, Illinois. When I turned the key on after refueling the car would not start. I panicked. Cindy panicked. I tried to start the car a couple of times with no success. Cindy though perhaps the car was not fully engaged in “Park”. I shifted the gear column a little and I tried the ignition again. It started! I said, “Thank the Lord! We’re not stopping again.

Cindy: While definitely worth a watch it was no “Saturday’s Child.” Dawn: there you go, dragging Cindy through “the Doors”

Cindy: Well, I didn’t exactly panic but I was wondering how I was going to walk home from there on my poor arthritic knees.

Cindy: I hate to admit this Dawn but she didn’t have to twist my 24

It’s just those red maracas…

Bonnie: Well, this is The End (my beautiful friends). It’s “Hard To Believe” the concert we had anticipated for months had come and gone in the blink of an eye. It’s always nice to see David and/ or any member of The Monkees. Craig told me a couple of weeks ago he was going to write to David (However, we have another case of ‘a bunny and a chicken’.) to tell him he was worried about me and fearing he was losing one of his fans to the likes of Jim Morrison. Please don’t make me

Cindy: No, no! Not the end, my friend! I will expect to see your penance in writing on the trip to Deh Moi! Stay tuned we’re planning a PFG reunion with Marylee, Dr. Rock, and anyone else in the Gang who wants to join in. Let us know if you will be there!

more clearly in his later work, he also had a keen appreciation of traditional popular standards. John Stewart recorded three albums for Capitol which linked him to some fairly heavy talent via their producers: Voyle Gilmore attached to Sinatra, Nik Venet the longtime associate of Bobby Darin and Peter Asher who produced Willard. At the time, Asher was betting heavily on a young folksinger and guitarist names James Taylor, and its undoubtedly through Asher that Taylor plays a prominent role on Willard. And he’s not the only celebrity present: Doug Kershaw plays country fiddle throughout, Asher also himself supplies background vocals and Carole King plays piano on two songs.

Spotlight on Nilsson / John Stewart – Willard (2-on-1) Release Date: 14 Jun 2010 Label: DRG This collection spotlights two major performers: one is in the process of finding his own voice; the other already has just done that. Harry Nilsson (1941-1994) and John Stewart (1939-2008), didn’t sound anything like each other, but both were, in the broadest sense of the term, singer-songwriters who had an important role to play in the folkrock movement of the 1960s. Both had a direct connection to the Beatles; it was the endorsement of John Lennon and Paul McCartney that helped boost Nilsson to national attention in 1967 (and he later collaborated at length with Lennon and Ringo Starr), and Stewart’s best album, Willard, was produced by Peter Asher, who was, among other things, certainly part of the Fab Four’s inner circle. They also both wrote songs that became iconic hits for The Monkees: Nilsson’s “Cuddly Toy” and “Daddy’s Song” and Stewart’s “Daydream Believer.” The ten tracks that Nilsson recorded for Capitol’s Tower label from 1964 to 1966 show that he listened to and absorbed a wide variety of music: early rock, blues, soul, folk, country, and as would come through

“This is one of those rare docs that leaves no stone unturned,” said Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber in the press release announcing the acquisition. Besides all the amazing and exclusive material Scheinfeld managed to uncover, what impressed me most about Who is Harry Nilsson? was the film’s capacity to make you fall in love with Nilsson’s work all over again.

In general, critics have written favorably about the movie. The Hollywood Reporter said it doesn’t exactly break any fresh docu ground, but it's ability to richly evoke a highly tactile time and place should make it a viable theatrical and DVD release through the right distributor. Added Variety, Pic's positioned to revive Nilsson's name, which should happen through fest exposure and vid, and a few modest theatrical gigs.

As befits a film about a musician more admired by aficionados than celebrated by the public, Scheinfeld’s documentary has been looking for distribution since it played at the Santa Barbara Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival in 2006. Legends of the Canyon The Music and Magic of 1960s Laurel Canyon As told by Legendary Rock Photographer Henry Diltz Legends of the Canyon Blu-ray Image Entertainment / Classic Artists 2009 / Color / 1:78 enhanced widescreen / 110 min. / Street Date August 31, 2010 / 19.98 Starring Henry Diltz,David Crosby, Graham Nash, many others. tographer Henry Diltz has its shaky aspects but benefits greatly from its choice of narrator. While singing in a group called The Modern Folk Quartet in the middle 1960s, Henry Diltz began taking pictures of his friends and other musicians. Because he happened to have some exclusive pictures of a top group, his hobby quickly led to a career as a photographer for album covers, which led to even closer associations later in the decade. Along with video and film from other sources, Diltz's photographs and candid 8mm movies provide excellent visual glue to bind together Legends of the Canyon's many interviews with stars, agents, club owner and "people who were there" at some interesting points in rock history. Living in Los Angeles, we knew that Laurel Canyon was traditionally a center of creativity. An animator friend lived up there, and when my children went to the Wonderland School in the 1980s I realized that the spirit of a quasihippie community -- creatives with money -- was still in force. Henry Diltz was a fly on the wall for a lot of drama just a mile up from Sunset Blvd., and in Legends of the Canyon he gives us a good look at it.

Reviewed by Glenn Erickson Not too many documentaries about the lives and times of Rock 'n' Roll legends are really worth seeing. We may enjoy the 'history' segments in concert films like The Last Waltz, but we're really there to hear the music. Plenty of cheapie docus feature a decent interview with a certain star, but haven't the means to license relevant clips of film and music. Even the DVD edition of A Hard Day's Night can't afford to put any Beatles music in the background of its insightful docu extras Legends of the Canyon, with the long sub-title The Music and Magic of 1960s Laurel Canyon, as told by Legendary Rock Pho35

together. Crosby and Stills remember Joni Mitchell as a songwriting dervish capable of generating great tunes one after another.

The show is built around candid interviews with prime players in the music world circa 1968 or so. Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas describes the vibe up in the Canyon, where people could live in rented houses instead of apartments. The musicians loved the laid-back atmosphere. We even see the country store slightly down the hill. More input on the Canyon's mellow mood comes from Nurit Wilde, who was a lighting technician at both the Whiskey and The Troubadour. Wilde cites the canyon's proximity to the Sunset Strip as the determining factor in its popularity.

Diltz's home movies of the Canyon and Hollywood are rather shaky but his still photos are excellent and make a great backdrop for the stars' descriptions of life in this particularly mellow fast lane. Steven Stills and Neil Young had fought like cats and dogs during their time with The Buffalo Springfield, and when they teamed up again they simply repeated the experience. The new group had ups and downs, as when David Crosby's girlfriend was killed in a car wreck. Of course, CS&N's first triumphant moment came at the very beginning at Woodstock. Henry Diltz was invited to document the preparation for the giant music festival; his film clips of the show are quite good.

Although other groups and musicians are touched upon -- Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin -- the key Laurel Canyonbased musicians covered are (David) Crosby, (Steven) Stills, (Graham) Nash and (Neil) Young, and the top talent that moved in their orbit. All but Young contribute lengthy interviews that cover all aspects of their career and times, making Legends of the Canyon a valuable resource for serious R&R fans. Like protons spinning off the earlier groups The Byrds, The Hollies and The Buffalo Springfield, these musicians reformed into a very special unit. They talk about group chemistry and the inresidence artists that impressed them -- Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell especially. Cass Elliot is described as a sort of social Earth Mother who brought people

The interviewees get into a lot of personal detail as well as descriptions of the changing comfort level in their recording sessions, which range from totally harmonious to impossible. The show eventually touches on the subject of drugs, which were a major setback for David Crosby. He ended up doing some time in prison. Crosby takes a thoughtful attitude toward all of this in the interview. He wishes that the hard drugs had never come into his life, not necessarily for what they did to him, but for the music 36

Monkee Shines

that never happened. Further comment on the quality of the music that did get recorded comes from successful agents, group managers and even mogul David Geffen, who appears to have gotten his start representing some of these creative geniuses.

look fine, with professionally recorded sound. Most of the 8mm footage is okay and the stills are very attractive. As the show is formatted widescreen and given a 16:9 squeeze, some of the flat material is compromised by 'adjusted' scans that stretch faces on the horizontal axis. This makes musician Dallas Taylor look decidedly odd. But this is not a big complaint.

Legends of the Canyon reaches a bit toward the end, with sweeping statements about the anti-war movement and the bummer end of the 60s, using the usual montages of assassinations, Kent State, Charles Manson, etc., to gauge the state of the nation. A clip from The Colbert Report shows Crosby, Stills and Nash still happy with their anti-war and anti-Nixon songs. Henry Diltz interrupts a few times too many with pungent generalizations about what it all means, but he's not a pompous fellow. And he certainly was there to witness and record a lot of 3njoyable Rock 'n' Roll history. It's time to go drag down my old Joni Mitchell albums!

The disc's extras gallery contains plenty of attractive Diltz material, including uncut home movies from the Canyon and a trip to Big Bear, other home movie footage, and plenty of still photographs. Uncut interviews with some of the key people are also present. The 20-page color insert booklet features more Henry Diltz photography arranged in a scrapbook form, with Diltz's personal remarks. On a scale of Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor, Legends of the Canyon rates: Movie: Very Good Video: Good Sound: Very Good Supplements: much extra and uncut 8mm footage, unused and uncut interview material, photo gallery, color booklet Packaging: Plastic and card folding holder in card sleeve Reviewed: August 28, 2010

Legends of the Canyon does have plenty of music on the soundtrack, often the very songs being described in the interviews. Slightly grainy clips from the CS&N performance at Woodstock are present as well. Viewers won't feel shortchanged in the music department.Image Entertainment / Classic Artists' DVD of Legends of the Canyon is a not-bad encoding of a docu made from source material of varied quality.
