• FOREWORD •

A Sincere and Pure Devotion to Christ (Study of Second Corinthians) What would you like to be known for? Would you like to be a person known for “a sincere and pure devotion to Christ”? In his letter to the believers in the Corinthian church, the apostle Paul wrote: “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to Him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.” 2 Corinthians 11:1-4

The apostle had become deeply concerned that some of those in the church he had founded had, put up easily enough with a different gospel that proclaimed a different Christ other than the Jesus he preached. Are we proclaiming a different gospel and worshipping a different Christ in our church today; the sort that is happy to have Christ on Sunday, or when one is in crisis, or in need of success? We battle against many things that call for our devotion today. But in Paul’s perspective, sincerity and purity of devotion are useless and a waste of energy if they are not centered in Christ. We want to live for that which has eternal significance. May the study through Second Corinthians, and this devotional journal encourage you toward the discipline of meditating on God’s Word, heeding the apostle’s call to a whole-hearted commitment to believing the right things about Jesus and doing the right things for Jesus. God’s Blessings,

Pastor Jimmy Boh i

...in this Devotional Journal. We have made some changes to the DJ format for 2014. From Monday to Friday each week, you are encouraged to read and reflect on one psalm and one suggested scripture passage for the whole week. Use your creativity to portion out the reading texts for the week as you anticipate the week’s schedule and pace. Please have your additional readings if need be. However, you are encouraged to cultivate the discipline of meditating on the same psalm or passage daily, listening to the Holy Spirit’s invitation within you through any particular word, or verse, or phrase, drawing personal applications from it. In fact, the point of scriptural meditation is not so much to draw application, but to learn to dwell in God’s Presence. Let us not be satisfied with insight from God’s Word, but learn to dwell inside His Sanctuary. A sample journal entry is given on the next page.  Record: Read the text and record down any particular verse(s) or word(s) or thought(s) that strikes you.  Reflect: Write your thoughts on what God is impressing upon your heart. This could be thanksgivings or areas of obedience needed.  Respond: Journal what you will do in response to God’s Word. This may include an application, written prayers and resolutions. At the start of this DJ, you will find some questions that may help you set some goals for the New Year. Take a bold step to share areas of growth and goals you are anticipating with someone whom you would like to help keep you accountable. “We live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

Week 1

Text: Exodus 3:1-6 Record: Moses saw the burning bush , and he was intrigue by the fact that “the bush does not burn up.” Then in verse 4, it is written : “When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush , ‘Moses! Moses!’”

Reflect: Nothing happens by chance. Moses had to lead the flock to the far side of the desert just to feed them . I can imagine the hassle and the inconveniences invol ved. But it was there that Moses saw the burning bush. When Moses became attentive to what he saw, God spoke!

Respond: Lord, how often I’ve missed the opportunity of hearing You speak, addressing me by name because I was so distracted by the demands and the desires of my life. I realized that You desires my attention , because You love me personally… Help me, O God, in this New Year to become more and more attentive to Your Presence, because You are already here among us. Emmanuel God, let me see You and hear You speak!

• BACKGROUND OF SECOND CORINTHIANS •

Author and Date

Second Corinthians is one of the four recorded letters written and sent by the Apostle Paul from Macedonia to the church he founded in Corinth (Acts 18:1-17), together with the house churches throughout Achaia (2 Cor. 1:1), of which Corinth was the capital. Second Corinthians is actually the fourth letter written around AD55/56. First Corinthians is the second letter. The first and third letters were lost but they were mentioned respectively in 1 Cor. 5:9 and 2 Cor. 2:3-4.

Background, Occasion, and Purpose Paul’s association with the commercial city of Corinth began during his second missionary journey, where he ministered at Corinth over 18 months (Acts 18:1-17). His second visit to the city was a “painful” one (2 Cor. 2:1). Soon after this second visit he wrote First Corinthians to them from Ephesus. Paul’s original intention is to travel from Ephesus through Macedonia to Corinth again on his way back to Jerusalem to deliver the money collected for the believers in Judea (1 Cor.16:5-9). Meanwhile, he sent Timothy to go ahead of him to Corinth (Acts 19:22, 1 Cor.16:10-11), only to find out that the church was in turmoil, most likely in reaction to the arrival of Paul’s opponents. When Paul learned of this, he went to Corinth immediately to try to resolve the issues. The visit turned out to be very painful because of their open rebellion against him (2 Cor.2:1, 5-8; 7:8-13; 11:4). At that time Paul thought it was best for him to suffer the humiliation and leave without retaliating, in order to extend mercy to the Corinthians (1:23-24). Once back in Ephesus, Paul sent Titus back to Corinth with a tearful letter (third [lost] letter) warning the church of God’s judgment if they did not repent (2:3-4; 7:8-16). But to his joy, Paul heard that the majority did repent when Titus returned with the report when they met up in Macedonia. But because there was still a minority who under the influence of Paul’s opponents (11:12-21) continue to reject him and his gospel, Paul wrote Second Corinthians from Macedonia in anticipation of another visit.

32

Second Corinthians is an extended defense of the legitimacy of Paul’s apostolic ministry. It is intended to accomplish three overlapping purposes: (1) to strengthen the faithful majority and the purity of the church (primarily chs. 1–7); (2) to complete the collection as the expression of their repentance (primarily chs. 8–9); (3) to offer the rebellious minority one more chance to repent before Paul returns to judge those still rejecting him and his message (primarily chs. 10–13). Thus, chapters 1–7 focus primarily on the past track record of Paul’s ministry, chapters 8–9 on the present responsibility of the repentant, and chapters 10–13 on the future judgment of those still in rebellion against the gospel.

Theme The central theme of 2 Corinthians is the relationship between suffering and the power of the Spirit in Paul’s apostolic life, ministry, and message. In addition to calling into question Paul’s motives in organizing a collection for believers in Judea (8:20–21; cf. 2:17; 12:14–18) and questioning his personal courage (10:10–11; 11:21), Paul’s opponents had argued that Paul suffered too much to be a Spirit-filled apostle of the risen Christ. Paul, in response, argues that his weakness as an apostle is the very means by which believers are comforted (1:3–11) and God in Christ is made known in the world (2:14–17; 4:7–12; 6:3–10; 11:23b–33). Paul’s sufferings embody the cross of Christ, while his endurance amid adversity, with thanksgiving and contentment, manifests the resurrection power of the Spirit (12:7–10). Paul’s suffering as an apostle is thus the very means God uses to reveal his glory (1:3–4, 11, 20; 4:15; 9:11–15; 10:17–18). Paul therefore sees a close tie between the Corinthians’ acceptance of his apostleship and the genuineness of their faith. To reject Paul and his proclamation is to reject Christ himself, since Paul’s message, ministry, and manner of life are one. This explains why 2 Corinthians is the most personal of all of Paul’s letters, filled with deep emotion. Extracted and adapted from ESV Study Bible
