The Need to

Nurture

No, this is not about the “Nature vs Nurture” debate vis a vis child rearing. I’m talking about Self-Nurture. We all need it, but why do women find it so hard to do? Nurture v.t. nourish, rear, foster, train, educate. Take a moment to think. Based on this definition from the Oxford dictionary, how many people are you nurturing each day? In my work I ask this question to groups of women and invariably get a long list of answers:Children, husbands, aged parents, troubled siblings, colleagues, clients, bosses (!), even gardens and pets!! And yet there’s nearly always one person who’s left off that list… Yes…that’s right…who’s nurturing you?! What exactly is “self nurture”? And how do we get some? Dr. Alice Domar, is assistant professor of obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School and also the Director of the Mind/Body Centre for Women's Health in Boston. In her book “Self Nurture: Learning to Care for yourself as Effectively as you Care for Everyone Else” she uses this definition “to care for yourself and put yourself amongst your own list of priorities.” Another definition I like is “loving acts directed toward ourselves” I’d like to point out here that “nurturing” is not the same as “pampering”. The dictionary defines pamper as “overindulge, spoil with luxury”. So whilst there could be some marketing mileage in the idea that women like a nice “pamper” session...what we need much more is nurturing. Dr Domar shows that small doses of daily self-nurture can counter-act the stresses

4

involved with juggling too many roles. She has some suggestions for every day things a person can do to nurture herself. “Every day, at least once a day, when you start feeling stressed out, stop yourself and say, "What do I need right now?" ... It may be something simple as to take a two minute relaxation break, or look up a joke on email, or call a friend, or go for a walk, or decide to order a pizza for dinner! But you need to check in with yourself on a daily basis to find out what you need. And every morning, when your alarm goes off, spend 30 seconds to think about what you can do that's nice for yourself that day. Whether it's buying yourself a fabulous piece of fruit, or calling a great friend, or buying yourself flowers, anything!” And motherhood of course adds a whole new dimension to the need to nurture. Quality time for ourselves is just as important as quality time for kids and partners. It is possible to find ways to selfnurture that include our kids. Take a walk, do some yoga, bake something delicious, sit down and watch a favourite movie. You will be a better mother and a MUCH better role model if you take care of yourself, too. As mothers often struggle with lack of support and isolation, the need to selfnurture has never been greater. Dr Domar points out “Women are more socially isolated now than at any other time in human history. Think about it ... until 20 years ago, for all of man's history, women lived amongst other women, with mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins and sisters. And women cared for each other. They didn't need to self-nurture because they cared for each other. But in the last 20 years, not only do we have nuclear families, but women work outside the home, so they're very socially isolated. Women need to be around other women. They have a unique

gift in terms of compassion, empathy and sharing. And social support is crucial for our mental and physical health.” So a good Girls Night Out is not frivolous fun…it's essential! Dr Domar continues,“A number of studies have shown that social support is crucial to our physical health. Women with lots of close friends tend to live longer and are less likely to die from breast cancer”. Going back to my dictionary once again I found that the roots of the word “nurture” go back to the Old French noureture or “nourish” . So nurturing is a form of nourishment, and we all know how essential good nourishment is. Of course, how you nurture yourself is entirely a personal choice…one persons nurturing could be exhausting, boring or unthinkable to someone else. Whatever form it takes, try to remember you have Physical, Mental, and Spiritual needs that would all benefit from a bit of nurturing. As women we have to make our own selfcare a priority. No one is going to organize our lives for us so that there is magically some “extra time” to indulge in some selfnurture. It’s a cliché but, if you don’t do it…no one will. Don’t wait round for some magical time when “everything’s done” and you can finally give some time to yourself. Whilst I hate to quote a multinational of dubious credentials, when it comes to selfnurture - “just do it”. Here are some ideas that might help you: -

Physical nurturing • Eat well - Feed your body the nutrients it needs. • Exercise – include your kids in your exercise routine if that’s the only way to fit it in. • Get (or give) a Facial - You don’t have to have qualifications to do a facial with a girlfriend (mum or sister). • Foot soaks – Make a 10 minute foot soak a regular soothing ritual – morning or night. Foot soaks are known to reduce pain and relieve tension and will provide healing benefits to the whole body. • Massage - In our touch-starved lifestyles massage not only relaxes, it can boost immunity, bring better sleep, reduced anxiety, and a valuable sense of emotional balance. Mental • Enroll in a course – it could be a one day workshop or a University degree! • Reading – get books for yourself at the library, not just for the kids. And then set aside time to actually read them! • Listen to your favourite music – in the car or on an ipod whilst your vacuuming. Spiritual • Meditate – if you think you don’t have time check out “8 Minute Meditation” by Victor Davich (or online at www.8minutes.org) • Spend time in nature – alone or with the family. • Catch up with friends – this really shouldn’t be a chore! • Show gratitude – and be open to receiving it.

The Confusing World of Additives! All those ‘numbers’ on ingredient labels can be very confusing and there are many, many artificial additives that we have to contend with these days. How do you know what’s what? Can you decipher what all of the numbers and codes mean? Most probably not. Let’s work through what these additives are, why they are used, what effects they may have and how to avoid them, starting with preservatives... What is a preservative? A preservative is an approved class name which reflects the functions performed by food additives. Basically, a preservative serves the function of prolonging the shelf life of foods. How can I preservative?

identify

what

is

a

There are quite a number of food additives that are used to preserve foods. Some have no cause for concern, whilst others certainly do (these are listed in bold). Some food additives may also cause hyperactive reactions and I have listed those with a triple asterisk next to the additive name. I have listed the ‘number’ and the ‘name’ as either may be listed, more commonly just the number. You may also find some of these additive numbers with the letter E in front of them and these should also be avoided.

Common Food Additives 213 Calcium Benzoate 216 Propylparaben 200 Sorbic Acid *** 218 Methylparaben 201 Sodium Sorbate 220 Sulphur Dioxide *** 203 Calcium Sorbate 221 Sodium Sulphite 210 Benzoic Acid *** 222 Sodium Bisulphite 211 Sodium Benzoate *** 223 Sodium Metabisulphite 212 Potassium Benzoate 224 Potassium Metabisulphite As you can see from this list, there are only two food additives used as preservatives that do not have any concern. All of the others do and may also be causing hyperactive reactions in our children. How do I avoid these food additives used as preservatives? One of the simplest things that we, as mums can do is choose a preservative-free bread for lunches. It is such a simple thing to do, yet can have a very positive impact. Artificial preservative 282 can cause young children to ‘head bang’. I know firsthand, as my son was doing this at the age of 18 months, repeatedly hurting himself and yet doing it again. I was at a loss to understand why he was doing it! I did two simple things on the advice of a friend in the health industry, which was to buy bread that was free of additive 282 and to supplement his diet with a particular Essential Fatty Acid she recommended that was mercury free (another tricky thing as mercury is not listed on the label!).

225 Potassium Sulphite 228 Potassium Bisulphite 251 Sodium Nitrate *** 252 Potassium Nitrate *** 280 Propionic Acid 281 Sodium Propionate 282 Calcium Propionate *** 283 Potassium Propionate

Within three days of making these two simple changes, my little boy had stopped head banging and never did it again! I have continued to avoid 282 in breads and continued to supplement with EFA’s to this day for proper brain development, learning and concentration as the brain is made up of fatty acids. Learn to read the labels! To help more mums know what they are looking for, we have just put together a handy foldable pocket guide listing food additives to avoid and harmful ingredients to avoid – available very soon to purchase on our website!

Twins are Twice as Nice Our ownAussie #1 bestselling self-published female author, Rachael Bermingham, coauthor of the phenomenally successful cookbook series 4 Ingredients has celebrated the safe arrival of a couple of 2 very special additions to her family. Rachael, husband Paul and their son 5 year old Jaxson were excited by the arrival of beautiful twin baby boys Bowie and Casey born on May 20, weighing 3kg and 2.5kg. ‘We had been trying for 21/2 years for a little brother or sister for Jaxson and were absolutely devastated when we were told after a failed round of IVF that it would never happen. I was stunned when the doctor told us that in her opinion I was barren and the only way for us to add to our family would be through a surrogate mother or adoption. I cried for a week and

went through a grieving process till I came to my senses and thought – I don’t believe her - there HAD to be more options’ Rachael said. After seeing Sunshine Coast based Dr Stokes, they were given the hope they needed, and were successful first pop, and even more miraculously with not one little cherub, but 2! But overcoming challenges and accomplishing the seemingly unachievable is not uncommon for this dynamic Queensland Mum who has written 5 of Australia’s bestselling books. In 4 short years Rachael has become a household name recognised for her co-authored book 4 Ingredients, and is a popular and inspiring speaker who frequently runs mentoring courses to guide budding authors to writing and producing

their own bestsellers, as well as achieving their goals. ‘I opened a travel agency 3 months prior to September 11 and lost everything we had, but from that adversity I found out that I had a talent for marketing & public relations. I went on to use that talent to build many businesses from zero turnovers to multi-million dollar turnovers often within weeks before I turned my attention to using that skill in my own business ventures’, says Rachael. So how will having twins fit into this busy Mum’s world? ‘Our life has certainly got a lot more exciting – but I’m a meticulous planner, I schedule well and have learnt to be ruthless with my time and delegate. Most of the time it works but when children are involved you’ve always got to be flexible.

My family always comes first so it’s easy for me to prioritise,’ Rachael said. It is with this same strong belief system that Rachael has got to where she is today.

For your chance to be mentored by Rachael, book her to speak at your event, or to contact her visit her website www.rachaelbermingham.com

'Read My Lips', the '4 Ingredients' series and 'How To Write Your Own Book And Make It A Bestseller' are available at all good bookstores, Big W, Kmart and Target or online at www.RachaelBermingham.com

Rachael has built all her business entities from the ground up and has collectively sold over 2.7 million copies of her books, including her first solo title How To Write Your Own Book And Make It A Bestseller which was an overnight sensation. So how does Rachael juggle it all? ‘I wrote my first bestselling book ‘Read My Lips’ in Jaxson’s sleep times and my second book ‘4 Ingredients’ while I was breastfeeding!!!’ she said ‘if you place a realistic schedule and stick to it you will be amazed at what you can achieve!’ Just a few short weeks after giving birth to her twin boys, Rachael is drafting up her next book and back conducting her mentoring programs.

Top Work At Home Mum Motivation Tips! By Tania Avtarovski - The Business Mum Mentor

Working at home can be a challenge. Not only do you have a business to run, but screaming children, washing that needs to be hung out, dishes to wash, dinner to prepare and more. So, when this is happening on a day by day basis, how do you keep your motivation up? Firstly, it’s important to realise when energy levels start dropping. This will be the precursor to a lull in motivation and ultimately it can lead to health issuesso you want to stay away from this downward spiral as much as possible. How, you ask? Well, here are some tips to stay motivated:

Make Lists

Inspire Yourself

Write a list of what motivates you and what you are motivated by on a piece of paper. Often we need a reminder as to our reason ‘why’ we do what we do every day.

Find yourself a role model, people who inspire you….surround and immerse yourself with these people. Likewise, cut the negative people out of your life immediately. Positive Reinforcement

Take Breaks Take regular breaks throughout the day. Stop and have a coffee, go for a quick walk around the block, go for a drive. Change your physiology by taking a break.

Remember to use language that serves, supports, nurtures and challenges you…..you CAN achieve this goal and you WILL make those sales you wanted this month.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

Reward

Ok, we are in business and we are humanwe stuff up- don’t beat yourself up over it. Learn from it and move on- see it as a learning experience and as wonderful feedback to only improve in the future.

Reward your accomplishments matter how small they are.

Focus Focus on what you can influence, not what you can NOT influence.

no

14

If you would like a range of free marketing resources, tips and hints for your business then pop over to www.businessmummentor.com

Write and Read Write a success journal and re-read often Write out some wonderful motivating and positive affirmations and read them out morning and night. Look After Yourself

What you focus on is what you get so start to focus on what you do want rather than what you don’t want.

So, next time you feel a bit down and the motivation starts to drop, have a go at a few of the above points. Remind yourself your reason ‘why’ you work at home, why you sometimes feel like pulling your hair out, why you do what you do. It could be as simple as revisiting this very point that gets your motivation back up and running at full force... otherwise, implement some of the other ideas and remember that you are in full control of your thoughts and actions... it’s how you use these thoughts and actions in your everyday life that will make the difference.

Keep healthy, exercise, drink water, eat well. Feel better and you will act better.

Selling Your Transferable Skills Making a Career Change or Career Move quite often means you do not have the exact skill set the company or recruiter is looking for so this is where selling your transferable skill set comes in.

determine what career is most suitable for you. Part of this self assessment involves finding out what careers best suit your skill set and allow you to shine and be happy in the role.

Transferable skills are the skills you've gathered through various jobs, volunteer work, hobbies, sports, or other life experience. In addition to being useful to job seekers looking at a career change, transferable skill sets are are also important to those who are facing redundancies, restructures and those who are looking for their first jobs, or to reenter the job market.

Selling Your Transferable Skills

Identifying Your Transferable Skills The job title(s) you've held may tell little about what your actual job(s) entailed. Often the skills you used are quite different from the job title. That is why it's important to dissect each job you've held in order to discover what skills you actually used to do that job. If you are re-entering the workforce or entering it for the first time you'll have to look at your life experiences to get this information. When you are looking for a job you should do a thorough self assessment to

You've identified your transferable skills. You know where you can use them. Now you have to convince potential employers. Simply presenting your job titles on your resume is not enough; you need to describe each role, have a solid and clear career objectives and tailor your resume to the career change your are looking for. One way to do this is to write an objective that tells which skills are applicable to the position you are seeking. The other way is to write a skills-based resume — either a functional or combination resume. A functional resume describes each of your skills. A combination resume combines a functional resume with a chronological resume, listing your work experience in addition to your skills. We all have a transferable skill set; the important and key thing to do is to review “you” and what “you” can do.

MIKAYLA'S STORY It was mid-August when 6 year old Victorian schoolgirl Mikayla started to complain about a sore tummy, and over the course of the next week she saw the GP and the hospital, but was assured it was just constipation and was sent home with laxatives. Mikayla had a few days off school, but after discussing it with her parents, she went to school on August 26 in the hope that being with friends would make her stop thinking about the pain a little. When Mikayla's teacher called for her to go home her parents really started to think about the nagging feeling that said "she's going to the toilet, why is the pain STILL there?" Further investigation and a call to Nurse on Call (1300 60 60 24 in VIC) resulted in a trip to the ER and an x-ray. The x-ray showed no constipation and an ultrasound then revealed that her liver was three times its normal size. Dr Google

was instantly employed and the (literally) thousands of possible causes of enlarged liver were looked at with mixtures of "hope it's just that" and "that's really not what we want". It was after the ultrasound that the doctors at the hospital first started talking about the possibility of cancer and chemotherapy - but still as one possibility of many. By Friday the 27th Mikayla had endured a whole host of tests and the family were trying to keep positive but when the specialist came in Mikayla's family was informed that the doctors had discovered a large tumour growing in her liver, and more tests revealed it to be malignant. It's now been six weeks since Mikayla's ordeal began and further tests have shown the cancer has spread to her lungs as well.

(www.facebook.com/group. php?gid=151960531500527) where you can leave your kind thoughts and offer support to the family, and product donations have been collected from around the country from MWWAH businesses for Mikayla, her 5 brothers and sisters, and her parents (www.facebook.com/notes. php?id=220223821809).

Both Mikayla and her family remain positive about the outcomes, but ask the world for their prayer's and well wishes for little Mikayla. A facebook support group has been set up

The family would appreciate monetary donations to be made to either the Cancer Council or to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

The heat is on for the annual pre-Summer shape-up, and Curves has the answer: a 30-minute, 3 times a week workout that will have Australian women toning up and trimming down in preparation for a gorgeous summer. A half-hour at Curves is quickly becoming as popular as a tea-break for healthier and happier women who want to get into shape and stay there. With millions of members in 80 countries, the world’s largest fitness chain really knows about fitness for women. And with over 370 gyms nationwide, women can easily find a convenient Curves gym almost anywhere, so there’s no allowing for excuses.

Get moving: Any exercise is better than none. Once you start to build up your fitness, you'll be amazed at how quickly you feel the benefits of a healthier body. You’ll have a lot more spring in your step, and the compliments you’ll get will have you wanting to step out even more. The best exercise program for you…. is one you will stick to: Find a routine that works for you, and make it a habit. Curves’ 30-minute, 3 times a week routine is hugely popular because it’s manageable and the 30 minutes fly by as you change workout stations every 30-seconds. Work out because YOU want to and make it fun. Go with a friend, or join a place where the environment is welcoming. Curves is like a girls' club, where everyone knows your name, and we all share similar fitness goals. Don’t think of exercise as a duty but as a choice. It’s your time to devote to your body and health because your wellbeing is important to you. Bigger muscles create a smaller body: In order to increase your metabolism and achieve permanent weight loss, you must increase your muscle mass. Muscle burns calories so you can actually eat more

22

food without gaining weight, and strength training is the only way to do this. You need to lift weights or use other exercise equipment that forces you to work your muscles against resistance so that they work harder than they’re used to. You don't have to spend hours working out to increase muscle mass – 30 minutes three times a week will do it. Aerobics and walking are great for your heart but they don't build muscle mass. Working out should NEVER be painful: Make sure your workout helps -not hurts you. Hydraulic machines, which Curves uses, put minimal stress on joints and muscles, and are similar to water exercises, allowing you to work as hard as you want without fear of injury. That means exercising at the right level for you, using proper form and resting between workouts. You should feel invigorated after a workout, not exhausted. Don't be a slouch: Stand or sit up straight at your desk, in the car, when shopping! Hold your head up high, and tighten your belly. This also goes for when you are working out. The more muscles you use during any activity, the more fat burning your body will do.

Stretch: Stretch in the morning and at night to warm the body up, and relax it after a long day. Stretching the muscles lengthens them and allows them to heal stronger and be more limber. Try to relax while stretching, use visualisation or listen to soothing music; a state of relaxation will increase your range of motion. Even when not working out, daily stretching keeps you limber.

You and a friend can come and experience Curves with a complimentary one-week membership. Get Your Curves Back! Join the Curves Circuit and our new Weight Management Plan

Take up drinking…Water: Water acts a natural diuretic, and helps flush out your systems of toxins. It rehydrates the body and is great for skin, hair, and general health and wellbeing. Coffee, tea, juices and sodas don't count, you need 8 glasses of pure water a day. Think small: Set small, specific goals. Goals like ‘losing weight’ or ‘gaining muscle’ are too general. Be more specific - reaching a certain dress size, losing 5kg. Break your goals into smaller chunks so you can see the results. Exercise is one area where you can really see and feel success. Then take pride in your accomplishments and reward yourself. You did it! Keep track: Chart your progress to keep track of your workouts and improvements. Whether it's fat loss, building muscle tissue or just feeling better, keeping a log will motivate you. When you see where you are and how far you've come, you'll realise you're making progress and you'll continue! And here's an important extra tip - It's never too late to start! Exercise slows the effect of aging. Even after 50, exercise can add healthy and active years to one's life and lower health risks. Resistance training is important for older people because it is the only form of exercise that can slow and can even reverses the decline in muscle mass, bone density and strength. Flexibility exercises help reduce the stiffness and loss of balance that accompanies aging, and speed and agility is increased as well. Not to mention that mature women who exercise more are shown to have smaller waists!
