Why did you run for president? “I believe Pierce College is a great place to be. Partially because Pierce College consists of great people. But even more than that is having a chance to be president, or simply being involved, fulfills my need to stay active and deal with people. I love people and I love to deal with people.” What is one thing you would like to change about Pierce College, but you know you can’t? “While working on the activities board and student programs this year I found bureaucracy. Given the size of the school, I understand the need for bureaucracy, and that’s one thing that can’t be changed.”

What is something you would like to change at Pierce and you know you can? “There is one thing I would like to change but don’t know how to go about it. That is the spirit and the attitude of the students. It’s not a bad attitude, but it’s one where we can’t connect with students because they are so busy with other things.”

Why did you run for vice president of activities? “I ran for office for a couple reasons. The first was that I wanted to be involved in leadership and also I enjoy working in student programs. Secondly, the knowledge and experience I will learn will benefit me for the rest of my life.” What would you like to change about Pierce College Puyallup, but know you can’t? “I would like there to be a diversity of student body on the campus. I would like there to be more student involvement on campus. Plus, I haven’t really thought about what I am unable to change.” What would you like to change at Pierce College and you know you can? “Since we did get full campus status I will be serving on the committee for the new building. It is going to be a student services building, so I really want it to be user-friendly for students.”

Puyallup achieves full campus status VOLUME 4

Job Duties: Gather student input and opinions on political issues. Conduct political forums and surveys. Why did you run for vice president of government concerns? “I ran for the position because I felt an obligation to make Pierce College feel like a college experience.” What is one thing you would like to change about Pierce College Puyallup, but you know you can’t? “I would like to improve the enthusiasm toward student events and increase the turn out at the events.” What is something you would like to change at Pierce College and know your can? “I would like to improve student awareness about what is going on at the school. I would also like to make available to the students more complete information.”

Finally, full campus status has been achieved! The state Legislature allocated $2 million for Pierce College—Puyallup, and students, faculty and staff will begin to see the results in the fall. Some of the changes will include: eight new faculty members, increased library hours, increased student services, and a larger selection of classes offered. This additional money will also free up the pre-design money for the planning and construction of the phase three building/student center.

speed boat skims its way across Neah Bay, scanning the horizon for its target. Once the target is spotted, a second, smaller boat moves in—a canoe made from a single cedar log— armed with a .50 caliber military rifle. The rifleman aims at the base of the whale’s head and fires shortly after the stainless steel harpoon has struck it. Welcome to the traditional Makah way of life. The Makah have apparently had large caliber rifles, speedboats, and stainless steel harpoons for the two thousand years they have been whaling. The Makah tribe haven’t killed a whale since 1920. This year, as I’m sure we are all by now aware, they have killed one, and seriously injured another. How are they allowed to do this when the United

States has placed a ban on whaling? The Makah Treaty of 1855 insured the right of the Makah tribe to hunt whale. This treaty is still legal, and has been upheld in the Supreme Court of the United States. They have a legal right to hunt the whale, but does anyone have the ethical right? The Makah are quick to point out that the eastern Pacific gray whale is off of the endangered species list, and that some scientists believe their number is at an all time high. What the Makah refuse to recognize is the international precedent that this sets. This loophole of “tradition” is large enough to fit a whale through, or at least several dead carcasses. At the Grenada whaling summit later this year expect many traditional whaling communities to

While attending Pierce College—Puyallup, which instructor impressed you the most and why? Amanda Mcginn: Ed Leitner for his ability to convey the message of teaching, the aspects of psychology, as well as the stories he used to incorporate it into everyday life.

Brandon Madsen: I was most impressed with the consistent high quality of Ed Leitner’s courses. I took three from him this year and each one was well managed. He has excellent organizational skills.

Melissa Barnett: Dr. Bill Krieger with the 301-Cabin Project. It was a neat perspective on an English class. It was a four-day camp where we read novels. The setting of the cabin really enhanced the experience of the novel.

Nik Korschinowski: Warren Brown because I am not afraid to talk in front of people anymore. He taught me how to feel comfortable in front of people.

Sarah Stamaris: Chris Vanesson impressed me a lot because of his dedication, what he has been through, and how patient he appears to be.

Candice Stetson: Wendy Dove because she explains everything really well and is always available for extra help if we need it. She is really great.

David Christensen: Ed Leitner because he is real friendly and down to earth with the students.

Shane Hardin: Marla Gillham teaches biology and impressed me most because of her expertise on the subject. She really understands what she teaches and explains it really well.

Leah Spiesman: Sharon Russell because she is easy to listen to and makes the whole class fun.

demand the right to whale. The Japanese, the Norwegians, and several Canadian tribes have already expressed interest in using this same tactic. The Makah have taken back their earlier assurance that they would not sell any whale to outsiders and have since said that they are considering it. You can see how the taking of a single whale from a recovered species has quickly become a threat to whales everywhere. I have no anger toward the Makah, in the personal sense; however, I do not agree with what they have done. I feel that it will release a floodgate of whaling, and disregard for current ethics in favor of the mistakes of the past.

Pushing Tin

A movie about an air traffic controller and his struggle to accept that he is not the best man on the job. John Kusac plays a man who has a high stress occupation, but he is the best at what he does. When Billy Bob Thorton shows up on the scene, Kusac experiences inadequate feelings and fear of losing his job. This movie was unethical and immoral. Everything good about love and relationships was desecrated in this movie. Husbands and wives were cheating on each other and lusting after others. The idea of competition was taken too far when one man beds another man’s wife. The response of one spouse was understandable and expected, while the other’s was highly unthinkable and inappropriate. My advice to movie goers is this: if there’s another movie playing . . . see it.

fairly clean, cute humor to the screen once more in this refreshing comedy. When the pair travels to New York for Martin’s important job interview, every calamity imaginable befalls the husband and wife from Ohio. The movie portrays the fears and struggles of thousands of parents whose children have left home for good. The pair tries to figure out what they will do with the rest of their lives together. An excellent movie if you’re out for a fun, lighthearted evening on the town.

Neeson) are apprentice and teacher sent on a vital mission to establish peace between the Trade Federation and the Planet Naboo. Unaware that the Trade Federation has no intention of settling a peace, they are there as puppets of a mysterious cloaked figure—a member of the Sith, evil Jedi, who seems to want to manipulate the political climate. This mysterious figure sends his apprentice, Darth Maul as an assassin to chase the Jedi as they travel around the galaxy attempting to free Naboo from the battle droid occupation army of the Trade Federation. Maul’s double bladed light saber, limited screen time, and fighting skills have made him a fan favorite. Hopefully Lucas can somehow top, or equal his cool in the next movies. Much has been made of Jar Jar Binks, Ahmed Best’s computer-generated alter ego, a dizzying blend of Roger Rabbit and Bob Marley. The irritatingly cute, and largely incomprehensible character as won the ire of many diehard Star Wars fans. "Well, youssa Jedi not so special as youssa cracked to be." Some even look upon the character as being racist. After all, his speech is patterned after the patois spoken in the Caribbean. Even as we are introduced to him Qui-Gon calls his intelligence into question, and he is portrayed throughout the film as being a bungler. Was I irritated by him? A little. Did I find him difficult to understand? Very much so. Do I think that Haitians, Jamaicans, and other Caribbean communities have a right to get a little upset? Possibly. Do I demand that he be dropped from further projects, and —as some fans have demanded— removed entirely from the film? No. I think Lucas knew what he was doing when he made Jar-Jar. Lucas didn’t want to sell a computer-generated character based on the fact that it was computer generated, so he distracts the viewer from it. We get so busy either hating or loving him that after the first few scenes we don’t even think of him as anything other than Jar Jar. There were some problems with the movie, it was a little cold, but the intricacy was fascinating. These sort of fine details that we don’t see often in these sorts of movies. The feeling of not knowing everything about everyone around you may be difficult to swallow, but I think it’s very realistic. More realistic than pausing to explain everything. I found the moving enjoyable, if not absorbing, and I will definitely see it again. I will be waiting eagerly for the next two installments. Also have fun at the Star Wars Episode I official website. Each time you load the main page a different set of characters, and a different style is used http://starwars.com/episode-1/
