Memories:

Looking back at the past year By Lonny Sulfaro Puyallup Post

Above: Pierce College President Steve Wall addresses the associates, friends and family of Frank “Buster” Brouillet. The Library/Science building was dedicated in his honor on May 9. Brouillet, who died in January after a long battle with leukemia, served a Pierce College’s president from 1989 to 1993. He also was a member of the House of Representatives for 12 years. Left: Members of Brouillet’s family unveil the plaque to be placed at the Library/Science building.

It’s hard to believe, but this school year is almost over. There have been so many events that have happened on campus this year that it might be hard for some people to remember them all. Just in case you forgot something, check out the 2000/01 year in review. The year kicked off with talk of a second entrance being added to the school to help ease the traffic congestion at the only entrance on the 39th Avenue, but nothing has come of that yet. Also at the beginning of the year, Zac Green and Christine Chilton were elected to the positions of student representatives 1 and 2, respectively. Student government and student programs worked hard this year to make some changes and make the year fun for students. Tax free textbooks was one of the major projects that student government See yeAr in review on page 2

Board approves next year’s budget By Lonny Sulfaro Puyallup Post

On May 9, the 2001-02 the student services and activities budget, and the technology fee budget were approved by the Pierce College Board of Trustees. Next year’s budget is similar to this year’s, with most programs receiving an increase in funding. The total operating budget for the student services and activities is $329,945 which is almost a $30,000 increase from this year. The largest jump in approved funds for the student life programs is the account for the office of student programs that will receive $61,000 next year, an increase of $4,650 from this year. Other programs will receive the same

amount of money. There are also a few accounts that will see a decrease in funding for next year. The account that will see the largest decrease is the orientation/special projects account that will receive $25,000, which is $3,400 less than this year. The Board of Trustees also approved the student services and activities fee increase. The fee will range anywhere from $5.50 per credit to the maximum allowed by the Washington State Legislature. In the technology fee budget, the final allocation for Pierce College Puyallup is $233,000. The money will go for computer lab support, library computer replacements, student printing in the library funding, and student printers.

editorial

Maintenance crews make me proud to be at Pierce

P

ierce College at Puyallup has a beautiful campus. The buildings and classrooms are clean. The sidewalks and parking lots are always clear. The grass and shrubs are all trimmed nicely. Students help keep the campus looking good by cleaning up after themselves, but the main people responsible for the campus looking nice are the maintenance and custodial staffs. I want to use part of this month’s editorial to thank the maintenance and custodial crews for all the effort they put into maintaining this campus. These guys are amazing. They work in all kinds of weather. When it snows and the parking lots are turned into skating rinks, they are the ones out there in the freezing cold making sure that the ice is melted before classes start. When the wind is blowing all kinds of debris on the sidewalks, they’re the ones clearing it off. The list goes on and on. They also set up the tables and microphones for events and make sure everything is in working order. These people do so much for the school and I don’t think they get recognized enough for all their hard work. So I salute the maintenance and custodial staffs. You’re doing a great job. Keep it up. I also want to recognize and thank the members of Student Programs. I’ve had the chance to get to the know most of the Student Programs members over this year and they all are great people. The Student Programs team has worked very hard this year to make it a memorable one for students. They have put together tons of events for students to enjoy. There have been guest speakers, recreational events, comedians, and musicians. “Student programmers,” thank you for everything you guys do. I look forward to next year. I also want to thank all the members of the student government. They have worked hard this year to improve the quality of the atmosphere at Pierce by working on many issues like tax free textbooks and getting the new ATM in the deli. And last, but certainly not least I want to thank all of The Post’s loyal readers. Without the students, there wouldn’t be a newspaper for me to write for. Even if this is the first time that you have read The Post, I thank you for picking it up. Your Puyallup Post Editor Lonny Sulfaro

members worked on this year. Students went to Olympia to argue their point with the legislature, but nothing happened this year regarding changing the law. Hopefully, next year a change will be made. The main reason nothing happened with the tax free textbooks issue was the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in February that none of us will soon forget. Student government members also went to Olympia to help make sure that tuition increases were kept to a minimal amount for the upcoming school year. Student programs also was responsible for bringing several speakers to the campus this year such as Carl Mack, Sherman Alexie, Hamilton Jordan, Adam Werbach, and Ursula Hegi just to name a few. Student programs also brought several comedians and musicians to the campus to entertain students. They also set up several events for students pleasure.

In March, Student Programs Coordinator Breann Parriott was named Miss Pierce County. Parriott will compete in the Miss Washington Pageant in June for a chance to compete in the Miss America Pageant in September. In April, the Daffo Deli received a new ATM thanks largely to the efforts of student representative Christine Chilton. Also in April student Tami Silva was named the Workstudy Student of the Year for Pierce College. In May, Pierce College dedicated the Library/Science building to the late Frank Brouillet a former president of the college. Also in May, Pierce sponsored the first Pierce Fest music festival at the Liberty Theatre in Puyallup. Kristian Nason, Rocki DuCharme, and Zac Green were elected to the positions of ASPCP president, ASPCP vice-president of Activities, and vice-president of government concerns for the 2001/02 school year, respectively. It’s been quite a year.

whitt’S enD Advice Column By William W. Whitt, PhD (Phoolery Director)

Dear Dr. whitt, I understand you give advice to college students. Can you tell me how to succeed in college? I’m not too bright and I don’t like to study. Signed, Dim Bulb Dear Dimmy, You will do just fine if you follow these few simple rules. Teachers like independent thinkers, so you should arrive late to class and leave early. Teachers like students who ask questions, so you should always argue with him or her, even when you know you’re wrong. Teachers appreciate someone who takes a unique approach to testing, so you must always use answers like, “I don’t know the answer to number 18 either, just like Jeremy, who sits on my left.” And above all, never put your right name on homework. Use a different name every time. Teachers love trying to figure out who “Farquar Abromowitzson” is. Dear Dr. whitt, My books cost a lot of money. Like, you know, like, a lot. So, like, what can I do, like? Signed, Likey

Dear obvious genius, Yes, college texts are very expensive. The reason is teachers and school administrators have collaborated and chosen the most expensive books on the market because they get a cut of the profit. Teaching doesn’t pay much, so we have to make ends meet somehow. But confidentially, and don’t let this get around, you don’t have to buy the books. When the teacher asks you your opinion of some section of the book, use a clever buzz-phrase like, “I found that idea very stimulating, but its concept is far more esoteric than I’m able to comprehend. Could you explain it in more simple terms?” Teachers love to paraphrase something that was originally simple into such a complex abstraction that they will forget the original question. Dear Dr. whitt, Why is it my mind goes away when I take a test? It seems like I know the answers when I go into the classroom, but as soon as the test starts, my head gets empty. Signed, Brainless Dear typical Student, I shouldn’t reveal this, but since this advice column is dedicated to telling all the truth all the time, I have to tell you that there are electronic brainsuckers installed in all the doorways in this college. The teacher turns on the brainsucker whenever it is needed, like the beginning of a test, and turns it off after the last student has dejectedly walked out. You walk through the doorway, the brainsucker sucks your brains out, you screw up the test, you walk out and get your brains blown back into your head. That’s

what are your favorite restaurants? Azteca and the Keg. what are you planning to do when you are finished at Pierce? Transfer to the University of Washington. what are your career plans for the future? To be a graphic artist or a senator.

politics and collect comic books. what are your favorite restaurants? Casa Mia and Las Margaritas. what are you planning to do when you are finished at Pierce? Transfer to Western Washington University. what are your career plans for the future? A political career.

suspense novels, jet ski, and any outdoor recreation. what is your favorite restaurant? Azteca, their pollo fundido is incredible. They’re horribly unhealthy but worth every bite! what are you planning to do when you are finished at Pierce? I’m still undecided about my future plans, but I will most likely study communications or business administration at University of Washington. what are your career plans for the future? I either want to be a public relations person or own a business, like a magazine or advertising agency.

the reason 15 minutes after the test, you suddenly know all the answers you screwed up on the test. And all this time you probably thought it was just test panic. Hee hee hee hee. Dear Dr. whitt, I’m looking through the Fall Quarter bulletin, and I can’t find any interesting classes. Any advice? Signed, Curious Dear Strange, I checked with the dean, but he put up a “Wall” of resistance, so I talked to the print shop. They omitted several pages from the bulletin. Here are just a few of the new classes coming out in the Fall. AnThr 111 Anthropology of Mallers A comprehensive overview of people who are addicted to malls. This class will explain the need for mallers to spend all their free time endlessly walking around looking but never buying. Several field trips involved. Bring your checkbook. eDUc 113 Cheating on Tests A startling look at how otherwise average students can excel on test days. The various ways and means of hiding notes on various parts of your clothing. The science of writing ambiguous answers that could be correct when argued later, in the teacher’s office. The many ways of smudging your writing, hiding all the important words. PhiL 146 The Philosophy of Philosophy A class which will leave you thoughtless, philosophically speaking. Why “Why?” is such a good test question, and why “Why not?” is such a good test answer. Exploring the endless and infinite concept of such quandaries such as, “If a tree fell in the forest, and there was no one around, would you still watch TV?”

Pierce fest rocks at the Liberty By Megan Peart Puyallup Post

If you did not get a chance to head down to the Liberty Theatre for Pierce Fest, you missed out. There were tons of free food and free prizes. Audience members were rockin’ the night to the bands: Ross and Darla Mackavoids, The Geeks and Spacepilot. The night started out with Ross and Darla. review They got the night rolling in the punk rock mood. They received a mixed reaction from the crowd. When The Geeks hit the stage, the crowd went wild. The audience seemed to love this local but well-known band. “The Geeks rocked. Their strong faith in God is always uplifting,” said Aubrey Starr. The Band consists of three awesome guys, Jim, Nate and Shannon. These three guys really know how to rev up the audience. “The Geeeks slammed the stage with their glam style, and rocked the house again,” said Jimmy, 16. Their lyrics are uplifting in a pumped up beat. They can change lives and rock a room at once. The Spacepilots kept the audience hanging around after eleven. Their interesting movie clips added a twist to their music. “Allan’s voice is simple and unique. I really enjoyed the concert,” said Sara, 19. “ I really liked Spacepilots, Hunter and Allan did a great show.” It was a great night and the audience seemed to have a blast. This was the best party Pierce College has thrown. They seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage and made it more enjoyable for the audience

Lonny Megan and

“You have questions, we have answers.”

Q:

I started going to church but my parents are upset about it. They think I am trying to be better than them. How do I get them to see that it is a good thing for them and me?

A: This is a big step in your life. Do not get discouraged by your parents, maybe they just need some time. Have you tried inviting them to go with you? If not, do so. Let them see for themselves that it is a good thing. If they turn down your invitation, just be patient. They will come around. Do not give up, it will work out.

Q:

I really like my girlfriend a lot, however, her perfume leaves a little to be desired. It really smells bad. Not only that but she pours on a ton of it. How do I let her know I do not like it with out hurting her feelings?

A: Yikes. You are going to have to be subtle about this one. Chances are she really likes this perfume, since she dumps it on. Our advise is to go shopping, without her. Find a perfume you like and buy it. You can try a specialty shop that has some great scents. Leave it for her in a sweet way. Try leaving it for her on her car while she is at work or while she is asleep or something. She will want to wear it since you gave it to her. Hopefully she likes it, and you will be free of stink. Good luck.

Q:

My daughter and I used to talk all the time, now she is 13 and hardly says two words to me. How do I get her to talk to me?

A: This is a tough time for both of you. She is experiencing many new things and probably does not know how to tell you. She also probably thinks you will not understand, even though you were a teenager yourself. The most you can do is let her know you are there for her and you will always understand. Arrange for a girls night out. Take her to dinner so you can chat. If you stay open, she will too. We are sure she will eventually come around.

Q:

I used to be picked on when I was a kid about being overweight. I know I have lost a lot of weight, but I still have a bad selfimage. How do I build it up?

A: It is hard to get over something like that. When kids pick on you, whether it is true or not, it can really scar you. Try to hang around friends who lift you up. Being around positive people can boost your self-esteem and self-image. As long as you continue seeking a better image we think you will do fine.

Alpha Psi Delta hosts kids camp

During the week of July 9, Pierce College Puyallup will provide the facilities and use fees for the first PC STOCK (Pierce College Students’ Technology Outreach Camp for Kids), a one-week summer computer camp whose purpose is to expose fourth-grade children from economically challenged families in the Puyallup area to computers and technology. Created by a committee of Alpha Psi Delta students, the goal of this program, which will be staffed primarily by student volunteers, is to show our support for the community by assisting local children in gaining confidence using a computer and the Internet. Students interested in volunteering to help with the outreach camp may contact Duncan McClinton, faculty project advisor, for additional information. His office is in A-157 and his phone number is 840-8373.

Part 3 of 3. I did not know that there was another door out to the parking lot, but here in room A 354 behind a hidden panel was, in fact, another door. For some reason the door was a secret to most of the students and perhaps faculty as well. Sydney seemed to know quite well of it. Now, I had to think fast... The room was quiet. Not a sign of Sidney other than a few more flyers scattered here and there along the way to the exit. In his haste to check the Pacer, he had left the door ajar. I cautiously approached the door and peeked outdoors. A sense of unease came over me as I looked across the windswept lot. There was no sign of Sidney or his Pacer. He usually parked down below the library and I assumed he must have headed down there, but then again, I told him I’d seen it out here by the main building. In any event, he was nowhere to be seen. The wind was howling through the tops of the trees around the lot. For a moment I thought I heard someone moaning, but it was too far away to tell if it was the wind or what. I began to look for my own car out in the lot. To save energy, the campus had cut lighting by 50 percent and it was dark and stormy tonight. Just then a strong gust of wind practically blew me off the sidewalk and I barely caught my balance. Somehow, even though Sidney was nowhere in sight, I had the sensation that someone out there was watching me. It took a while to find my way to the car. I fumbled for my keys and dropped them on the pavement twice. Finally, I managed to get the door open and climb inside. “Thank God, I made it in one piece and can get out of here!” Just then I saw something in my rear view window that made my heart sink into the car seat. At the far end of the lot was a car slowly moving in my direction with the lights off! No time to think about it. I had to get the car started and move fast! Thank goodness the car had recently been tuned up and had no trouble starting. I jerked it into reverse so fast that I bumped into one of the light poles and creased my rear bumper, but with that car moving closer and within 100 feet of me, I didn’t stop to check the damage. I stepped on it and headed for the sharp corner on the southwest end of the lot and tried to take the corner at 40—bad idea! I managed to mow down a few blackberries as I left the road for a moment. I was lucky I didn’t hit anything larger. The strange car was coming up behind me and was also picking up speed. “How on earth can anybody drive in the pitch dark with the headlights off?” I wondered to myself as I made it towards the exit from campus, yet there they were, right on my tail. “Which way to go?” I wondered to myself. I could head towards Shaw Road or down towards Meridian and the Stores. No way did I want to be down on that Shaw Road on such a dark and stormy night like this. I turned to the right without even stopping to check for any cars. This late at night what were the chances? By the time I reached Lowe’s, I was going over 60 miles an hour, but that car was still gaining on me. I took a hard right and tried to lose him by cutting between Lowes and Home Depot, but I couldn’t shake the strange car. Then the most terrible thing started to happen. I was running out of gas. Being a student on a tight budget, I tried to make $5 of gas last a week and I finally drained the tank—here alone in the dark. Well, not quite alone. All I could do was pull into the lot by Home Depot and sputter to a stop. I locked my doors and froze in fear waiting for this car to pull up behind me. In just a minute the car pulled up and stopped. A figure stepped out of the car with strange looking goggles on. I looked frantically for anything to fight with and defend myself, finding only a floppy disc and an old copy of the Puyallup Post. Tap, tap, tap, “Hey you in there, roll down the window!” I feared to raise my head and meet this strange person’s glare, but finally, I chanced a look at him. It was Sydney. “Wow, these night vision goggles are the greatest!” Sydney shouted to me. “I just wanted to make sure you got to read a copy of this flyer on the Secret U-Boat base over on Hood Canal.” “Well, thanks and that’s awful kind of you, I replied and took the doggone thing from him, hoping to get home and out of here.” As I tried to break the chat and leave, Sidney said “Don’t tell anybody about the Exit in room A 354. Nobody is supposed to know about it. “Fine Sydney, you have my word. Oh, and by the way Sid, do you have an extra gallon of gas?”

n This concludes the second of two three-part stories that have appeared in The Post. We hope you have enjoyed them as much as we enjoyed bringing them to you.

Music Review: Lonny Sulfaro: There weren’t many people who thought Dave Mustaine would be able to survive in the music industry after he was kicked out of the original lineup of Metallica in 1982. Nineteen years later Mustaine is still rocking as the frontman of Megadeth whose new album “The World Needs A Hero” hit stores earlier this month. The new album is the follow up to their 1999 release entitled “Risk.” There really isn’t anything bad I can say about this album. It’s hard and heavy metal in its purest form. All of the 12 songs on the record are full of hard hitting riffs and powerful vocals. It’s nice to see a true metal band that still plays real metal and not some of the crap that some critics consider metal like Papa Roach and Rage Against the Machine. Bands like that aren’t metal bands. They may have a metal beat, but the rap lyrics ruin the music. Big ups to Megadeth for keeping it real. The album itself is about an hour in length. If I had to pick one track that stood above the rest, I would have to either pick “Disconnect” which is the first song on the

album or “Promises.” “Disconnect” is very heavy and reminds of early Megadeth. “Promises” is a type of song you don’t hear Megadeth play much. It’s kind of like a metal ballad. Speaking of early Megadeth, the album also includes a new version of “Hangar 18” off their “Rust In Peace” album that is killer. I highly recommend this record for any hard rock or heavy metal fan. Rock on! on a scale of five CDs:
