Chad looked at himself in the mirror and snapped his suspenders. His red shirt and worn-in jeans made a perfect scarecrow costume. He had patches on his knees and straw sticking out of his sleeves and pant legs. "It's Halloween! My favorite day of the year!" he exclaimed, as he pulled an old battered hat. "My friends should be here soon, and I can't wait to see what their costumes are!"
A few minutes later, Chad watched as a skeleton, a clown and an alien approached his door. "Trick or Treat!" they shouted. It was Ryan, Brent and Anjali dressed in cool costumes, and ready to trick or treat.
Ryan was wearing a big, puffy wig as orange as a pumpkin. He had huge purple clown shoes and a polka-dotted clown suit on. He looked straight out of the circus with his face painted and wearing a red rubber nose. What a sight!
Brent was dressed in a black sweatsuit with glow-in-the-dark bones painted on it. He looked like a skeleton that wandered out of the graveyard. His face painted white, and dark circles painted around his eyes, made his look scary in the moonlight.
"Take me to your leader," joked Anjali. She was dressed as an alien. Wearing a shiny green and purple outďŹ t, with an antenna poking out of her head, she looked out of this world! Anjali said, "I hope Earth candy tastes as good as outer space candy!" Everyone laughed. "Follow me," said Chad. "I have a surprise for you."
White pillow cases and markers were sprawled out on the kitchen table. "Do you want to make treat sacks? We can decorate the pillow cases and then use them to trick-or-treat," said Chad. "Great idea," said Ryan. "I want to draw candy corns," said Brent. "I'm going to draw a space ship," joked Anjali.
The kids trick-or-treated up and down the streets until their treat sacks bulged with goodies. "We've been to every house except the old mansion around the corner," said Chad. "They say it's haunted," said Ryan. "Who wants to go take a look?" "The only light I see is one lonely candle burning in the window," said Brent. "I don't think it's a good idea." "Are you afraid?" Asked Anjali. "I say we check it out."
As the kids approached the front door of the mansion, Chad saw the door crack open. The kids slowly walked up the front steps. The door creaked open a bit more. Then WHOOSH!!!! Cold air circled them and pushed them in the foyer. The door slammed shut behind them.
Chad was brave and crept down the hallway. "What is this?" Ryan wondered why there were four doors, painted different colors. "Good evening," a deep voice said, startling all the children. "Open the white door." Chad replied, "Who are you? Where are you? I'm not opening anything unless I see you."
Another cool breeze carried the children through the white door, just as the voice commanded. Cobwebs were stretched all over the room, from the chandelier hanging from the ceiling, to the corners where the walls met.
Suddenly ghosts filled the room and their groaning echoed off the walls. The ghosts flew around and around, faster and faster, causing a roaring wind. This blew the door open and the kids ran into the hall. As he looked around, Chad noticed Anjali was gone. "Where's Anjali?" asked Chad. "She was in there with us when we saw the ghosts" said Ryan. "I saw her run into the hall" said Brent. "Let's go find her!" they cried together.
"Now you must enter the purple door," moaned the deep voice again. The kids were surrounded by ying bats. They could see the shadows of bats hanging upside down, getting ready to awaken from their slumber for Halloween night. A sliver of moonlight shone through the broken window. They saw a ďŹ gure standing before them.
"Greetings. I am Dracula. Come with me and I will introduce you to my friends." "No thanks," said Ryan. "It's so dark, we can't see anything" said Brent. "I like the dark. Daylight is for sleeping.", said Dracula. Ryan inched his way along the wall and found the door. The kids escaped into the hall again.
"Ryan! Where did Brent go?" cried Chad. "I don't know! He's gone now too!" said Ryan. Just then, the deep voice started to rumble. "There are two more doors. To ďŹ nd your friends, enter the green door."
