T

he 2014-2015 school year seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye. And it was a jammedpacked year filled with spiritual growth, academics, activities, athletics and performances. This edition of the Annual Report will share facts, some little known while other facts were heralded throughout the year. Did you know that perfect attendance for the Class of 2015 was 732 days in the PVI building – less snow days, flood days, and Bishop’s days! Or that the Class of 2015, served over 818 detentions (oops, probably should not be touting that fact too much). On the other hand, the Class of 2015 was offered over 12.6 million dollars in college scholarships. This was the 30th graduating class to ‘grow in grace and wisdom.’ We spent the year with positive spiritual and social speakers: Brian Kissinger & Emily Wilson – “Respect and Truth of God’s Love”; Karlo Broussard – “ Science and Faith: Can They be Friends”; Melissa Rhil – “Faith Based Dating in the Real World”; Fr. Ed Horkan – “Ethical Use of Advanced Technologies”; and Patrick Zanelotti ’04 – “Leadership and Ethics”. Athletically, Girls Basketball repeated as both WCAC Champs and, for the ninth consecutive year, VISAA State Champs. And Boys Volleyball did the unthinkable of going undefeated for the season; that is a record of 19-0 for matches and 56-0 in sets (never losing a game all season). Add to that the fact that 60% of PVI studentathletes maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher, our students are “What we do every getting it done in the classroom as well! Two Mission trips in June saw our students, some from the Class of 2015, doing what they do best – serving others. And the highlight of the year was the trip to Rome for the Beatification of Blessed Paul VI. In June, the Diocese of Arlington announced that Paul VI Catholic High School will relocate to Loudoun County. Please rest assured that our students and their needs will be in the forefront of this transition. The only thing that will remain behind is the building. The memories, traditions and legacy, those will all come with us.

year and what we do in future years is all because of you, our donors, who support us with your time, talents and prayers. ” – Virginia Colwell

But what we do every year and what we do in future years is all because of you, our donors, who support us with your time, talents and prayers. You make a difference in the lives of all our students, helping them with your support to maximize the endless capacities with which God has endowed them. On behalf of the students, faculty and staff who all benefit from your generosity and gifts from the heart, thank you. We can do what we do all because of you!

“T

hink” and “Patience” … I remember staring at these words on the corners of Mr. Salewski’s chalkboard in his Algebra class. They became a sort of meditation for me, bringing clarity when the x’s and y’s were not adding up. Like so many dedicated PVI teachers, Mr. Salewski taught far more than math. Students learned how to think and how to apply the lessons taught; there was no memorization. Patience, an attribute often lost in our hectic lives, made one better in the classroom by appreciating what was learned in the process. I remember Mr. Salewski’s perplexed look on several occasions when he would review my work. He would shake his head, tell me I somehow had the correct answer, and smile. How I got the answer was not always the easiest way, but I got it. Mr. Salewski appreciated that. He encouraged that. And I am better for it. Fast forward to college. I wrote “think” and “patience” on the top of every test and exam I took. For closure, I erased the words before turning in my work. However, during a challenging Pre-Calculus test, I neglected to erase the words; I had run out of time. I don’t remember the grade I got but I do remember the test being returned to me with big, red, ink circles around my handwritten “think” and “patience.” Father Carchidi, my professor, wrote me a simple note, “I like this.”

“Every day I use my Paul VI education and experience in my work, as a parent, and in the community. What I gained from PVI is a gift, an education formed by the classroom lessons taught by PVI teachers.” – Kate Andreottola ‘94

The Thank-A-Teacher campaign held in Spring 2015 was a testament to the teachers at Paul VI and illustrated that I was one of many who carried my PVI experience close to the heart. Alumni and parents representing 24 different graduation years donated in honor of teachers that made a difference and continue to do so. It showed that this foundation for learning and application in the real world is truly a part of the PVI tradition.

Every day I use my Paul VI education and experience in my work, as a parent, and in the community. What I gained from PVI is a gift, an education formed by the classroom lessons taught by PVI teachers. These lessons stay with one long after graduation, serving as guidelines for future endeavors.

Kate ‘94 and daughter Sophie, future PVI Class of 2025

This is the power of the investment you make in Paul VI Catholic High School – in the students, faculty, and staff. We are grateful for you and we are better because of you.

VI VE JESU S OCI E TY

Paul VI established the Vive Jesu Society to honor those donors who support PVI at the $1,000 level and above. The V+J, Vive Jesu, translates to “Live Jesus.” This is the motto of Saint Francis de Sales, the patron saint of Paul VI Catholic High School. The Vive Jesu Society enriches the lives of Paul VI students, faculty, and staff through gifts of $1,000 or more during the fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Paul VI Catholic High School is grateful for the generosity and loyalty of the Vive Jesu Society, which supports the school’s efforts to teach students how to live Jesus.

Pope Paul VI ($50,000)

Grace & Wisdom ($10,000)

Principal’s Circle ($2,500)

The school’s namesake, Pope Paul VI said, “Nothing makes one feel so strong as a call for help.” Members of Pope Paul VI create change. Their generosity enables Paul VI to achieve its mission, to graduate responsible, moral, service-oriented young adults. Because of Pope Paul VI members, faculty, staff, students, and alumni are prepared to respond to calls for help through leadership and a commitment to acting with integrity.

“Grow in grace and wisdom,” the philosophy of the school, is found in the prayer of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians. The kindness of Grace & Wisdom members ensures that this philosophy is rooted in the teachings at Paul VI and in the actions of our students as they prepare academically and socially to confidently lead.

Strong leadership is possible because of the circles of support – alumni, families, and friends – who invest in the academic and spiritual vision of Paul VI. Generous donors of the Principal’s Circle celebrate the Paul VI legacy, provide for the present, and create opportunities for the future.

Saint Francis de Sales ($25,000) “Be who you are and be that well.” The words of Saint Francis de Sales grace the walls of the classrooms at Paul VI and the memories of the alumni. Gifts at the Saint Francis de Sales level give students the tools to live as he did – loving God and loving their neighbor. The impact of these gifts are felt far and wide, beyond the walls of PVI. 4

Saint Jane de Chantal ($5,000) Saint Jane de Chantal, founder of the Congregation of the Visitation, received spiritual guidance from Saint Francis de Sales. An advocate for women in ministry and often facing adversity, Saint Jane de Chantal truly lived her mission. Donors at the Saint Jane de Chantal level help Paul VI students build the skills needed to identify and live their personal mission while advocating for others.

2 0 1 4 - 2 0 1 5 A N N UA L R E P ORT

Pride, Values, & Integrity ($1,000) Pride in who you are as an individual and community; values that embody the teachings of the church; integrity to lead with character and as a responsible member of society – each of these is the core of a Paul VI education. The support of friends of Pride, Values, and Integrity ensures PVI students achieve spiritual, intellectual, personal, social, and physical development according to the teachings of the Gospel and St. Francis de Sales.

FUND T H E PR OG RA M

Enhancing Hands-On Lab Skills Auction and Benefit Dinner supports Science Department with new equipment

P

roceeds from this year’s Fund the Program portion of the gala were dedicated to the Science Department. Over $25,000 was raised during Fund the Program and the Science department was able to purchase a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment thanks to attendees’ generosity. Some of the items purchased include a reverse stage fluorescence microscope, which is a superior platform for photography and projection and helps facilitate student research and in-class learning, a replacement Van der Graaf generator for teaching electrostatics, multiple Vernier Circuit training kits, an egg incubator, two Western Blots for identifying specific proteins, and an oscilloscope used to measure the frequency of an electrical signal and display waveform signals in a graph. According to department chairman Dr. Patrick Rozmajzl, “The science department is committed to continually improving the educational experience of our students. We’re not done. We want to inspire curiosity and surround our students with equipment that demonstrates the most modern techniques and supports inquiry. Coupled with improved relationships with external research facilities, we hope to provide amazing opportunities for advancement.”
