FROM THE
HEAD OF SCHOOL
As we celebrate St. Paul VI Catholic High School’s 40th anniversary, it is important to reflect on its past, present, and most importantly, its future. PVI is poised at the precipice of remembering the cherished traditions of the past, and embracing what is to come.
In this issue, highlights of the old and new are featured. One of our new electives, Aerospace Engineering, is allowing students to explore the unknown by testing solar-powered vehicles and encouraging students to consider careers as space explorers. Meanwhile, our music students traveled to Rome, Italy for a music pilgrimage. They sang at Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica and prayed at the tomb of St. Paul VI. Our Chinese language program, which is about ten years old, reached new heights, as well. Under the leadership of educator Liangyan Wang, our students will be able to broaden their studies through a generous grant from the Center for Bridging Cultures, Inc. Our recent Grandparents’ Day was the biggest yet, with over 250 grandparents visiting campus to enjoy performances and ice cream with their grandchildren. The annual Legacy Breakfast included 119 members of the legacy community to include alumni grandparents, alumni parents and students. Additionally, we round out the issue with our Annual Report of donors, recognizing those who generously support PVI and help fuel our success.
Students, faculty, staff, future students, alumni, parents, and grandparents are coming together to reminisce about PVI’s rich past and look ahead to its bright future. As a community, Paul VI is poised to grow to new heights, to inspire students to reach new goals, and to share God’s message of loving one another through our thoughts, words, and actions.
May we continue to be a supportive community, one that embraces what lies ahead, and may we always inspire those around us to Grow in Grace and Wisdom.

Path to PVI Reflection by
Laura Swenson,
Head of School “M
om, I found you the perfect job!” And so my journey to St. Paul VI Catholic High School began.
Over the years that I have worked with students and raised my own sons with my husband, I have reminded them that they have to be open to God’s plans, even when they don’t fully understand, or necessarily agree, with those plans. Such were my initial thoughts as I came to discover PVI.
The application was long and sat in my draft folder for more than a few days. I was returning from a retreat when I received the first phone call. Excited, I checked my email that evening and viewed multiple attachments with multiple pages and what seemed like thousands of questions. It reminded me of a college application, having many short and long written responses. My son, who was also applying to schools, sat down and said, “Mom, you just need to sit down and focus. You got this!”
One of the first things that attracted me to Paul VI was its commitment to working with students who think and learn differently. As an educator who wholeheartedly believes in the dignity of the human person, I was impressed that PVI had not one, not two, but three programs dedicated to meeting the needs of exceptional learners. In addition, PVI’s Options program was the second oldest Catholic program in the country. Having spent most of my career working with diverse learners, the school’s philosophy sparked my interest and captured my attention.
Another noteworthy feature was the school’s roots in Salesian spirituality. Was it coincidence that my favorite case study in my Harvard Business School program was the one about an all boys’ Salesian high school? I think not. Of the numerous books I have received as gifts over the years, one that still resonates with me, dating back more than thirty years, is a guide to the practical spirituality of St. Francis de Sales. Coincidence? I think not.
As I continued the interview process and progressed to the final rounds, I became increasingly open and excited about following what was, perhaps, God’s plan.
And so when my husband told me that his company would not let him work remotely, it was as if a door had been slammed shut. There was a very long weekend of conversation and prayer, followed by a phone call on Monday afternoon that my husband had not actually understood his Japanese boss. His boss was not denying his request to work remotely, he was supporting it. Somehow, during their initial conversation, there was confusion in the translation between Japanese and English. The misunderstanding was sorted out, and the process continued, with the full support and encouragement of my husband’s company.

At an away game, Laura poses with Glenn Farello, Assistant Athletic Director, and Billy Emerson, Athletic Director.
One of Laura’s favorite mantras is “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
Laura and her husband Steve have enjoyed exploring the area with their sons David and Matthew, including going on hikes as a family.
Finding a place to live, moving all four members of the Swenson family in about one month to three different states, and supporting my family through two unexpected hospital stays just days after moving to Northern Virginia completed the journey.
Was it God’s plan that I be in driving distance to my family members while they were in the hospital? Absolutely.
Is it God’s plan that I have the privilege of leading a high school founded by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, I certainly hope so.
Over the past several months, I have enjoyed learning
more about the PVI community, one that embraces commitment to Catholic values and service to others. As I continue my journey at PVI, I ask for your support and prayers that I may serve and lead with positive intent, one that is true to His plan. I hope and pray that the dignity of the human person and Catholic Social Teachings are at the forefront of all that we do at PVI, so that we are a community filled with Grace and Wisdom, one where all students, families, faculty, and staff embrace their Godgiven gifts and talents to support and serve others.
Is there a better plan than God’s plan? I think not.

Making Music Near & Far Music Department Showcases Talents Pilgrimage to Rome
This summer, 27 students, along with an entourage of teachers and chaperones, traveled to Rome, Italy for a musical pilgrimage.
The trip included tours of Castel Gandolfo, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. The students had two performances, one at St. Francis Cathedral in Civitavecchia and one at San Vitale Basilica in Rome. On the final day, students toured the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel and members of the Choir sang for Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.
"Going to St. Peter’s impacted me the most. We went to one of the holiest places in the world and I had the chance to receive the Eucharist there; it was eye opening," said Avery Karas ’24. The pilgrimage was a moving experience not only for students, but for their parents who attended.
“After deciding to make this trip a family affair, with all of our children as well as their grandparents, being present with them inside St. Peter’s Basilica and hearing our boys sing during Mass will go down as one of the best memories of our lifetime,” reflected Amy Trinidad, parent of two students on the trip.
When Mass ended, the group was given the opportunity to go privately as a group to the papal tombs and pray together at the tomb of St. Paul VI. “Our students will remember this experience forever,” shares Choral Director Sara Prince.

Aerospace students test their gliders on a windy December day.
Spotlight on new Aerospace Engineering course
“Days outside of the classroom or in our lab — designing, creating, competing — are what students look forward to the most. I hope their time together in engineering becomes a highlight of their PVI memories,” shares Mr. Tom Burkat about PVI’s new Aerospace Engineering course. Burkat studied electrical engineering in college with a focus on signal processing and control systems. “I was fortunate to have worked with several great engineers and people during my time in industry, from my first job as a junior engineer to my last one as Chief Technology Officer for a company I founded with a friend,” he shares.
Last year, Burkat taught Principles of Engineering, his first engineering course, and the
Aerospace course grew out of students’ interest in continuing to the next level.
“I’m familiar with aspects of aerospace, but have never taught an aerospace course. I didn’t hesitate at the opportunity because an engineer is always open to exploring a new topic and needs to be good at mastering it quickly so that it can be put to practical use.”
“Students enjoy the Aerospace course because the nature of the material allows it to be non-traditional in many ways. Even our first test was a little out of the ordinary. Students moved between stations performing tasks such as tuning a navigation radio and reading instruments on an airplane dashboard, in addition to the typical paper-pencil types of

problems.” Engineering students have also been spotted in the theatre testing gliders and in the back parking lot racing solar powered vehicles. In addition, several field trips have complemented classroom instruction, including visits to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the UdvarHazy Air and Space Museum. “Students would love to also visit a local airport to get a first-hand look at the aircraft and air traffic control operations. There are so many great companies, agencies, and personal contacts in our local area that our challenge is deciding how to visit with them all.”
Burkat expresses excitement for future possibilities in the course. “Students are really looking forward to designing, building, and launching their own model rockets. My own wishlist includes a portable wind tunnel so students would be able to design and test the performance of their own wings someday.”
“I’ve always enjoyed the freedom of movement that engineering provided in exploring different sciences and maths to accomplish a goal. Finding opportunities to pull the curtain back and demystify a concept for others — in order to create a multiplying effect — has been one of my favorite parts of my career. Now I can do that every day.”
.
PVI also offers Introduction to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering and one does not have to look far for guest speakers; a few have been on staff. Kieran Koch, a Youth Apostle in Campus Ministry (see page 14) is an aerospace engineer who shared about his work with rockets. Nick Zaso, another Youth Apostle in Campus Ministry, shared his Virginia Tech senior project in Mechanical Engineering with Engineering Design.

Space Coast Scholars Students Launch Career Interests at
Space Camp
PVI students are pursuing Aerospace Engineering not only in the classroom, but also by taking advantage of outside opportunities. Juniors Katie Boland and Lilia McKinley attended the Virginia Space Coast Scholars Program this past summer.
As Virginia Space Coast Scholars, Katie and Lilia completed a five month online portion, where they learned about various NASA missions and completed projects like hurricane mapping, writing case studies and technical reports, researching the history of NASA, and solving math problems that mimic problems scientists may solve for rocket launches, satellites and telescopes. For their capstone project, they designed their own mission.
The second part of the program was a week-long summer portion held at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia. “We were assigned positions, put in teams, and had to design and present a mission. We got to tour the Wallops facility and meet experts who told us about their experiences and what they do,” shares Lilia.
Honors Principles of Engineering students put their solar-powered vehicles to the test in a head-to-head (or more accurately panel-to-panel) competition in the back parking lot. Students worked in teams to create a vehicle that utilized their knowledge of mechanics, circuits, and maximizing motor power.
“I have always wanted to do something related to space and engineering, but this camp showed me just how many ways people are involved in missions. Learning about so many different aspects of aerospace missions has made me even more interested in working in this industry,” reflects Katie.
“This camp helped me see all the different ways engineering applies to designing a mission and what a career in engineering might look like.”

Chinese Program Awarded Grant
Paul VI was awarded a Cross-Cultural Chinese Language Education Grant of $19,000 from the Center for Bridging Cultures Inc. (CBC) to be used exclusively for enhancing our school’s Chinese language education program. This grant was approved because of PVI’s solid commitment to Chinese language education and cross-cultural engagement, thanks to Mrs. Liangyan Wang and her dedication to the program and her students.
Wang is a native Chinese speaker and an awardwinning educator in the United States and China. She has presented at state and regional foreign language conferences, the Chinese Language Teachers Association’s (CLTA) annual national conference on research-based pedagogical practices, and has been invited to speak at the Foreign Language Association
of Virginia (FLAVA), the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL), and the Southern Conference On Language Teaching (SCOLT). She is the 2022 Virginia Contribution Award recipient by CLTA-VA and an award grant recipient. Wang has been invited by College Board ETS for the past four years to participate in AP Chinese exam reading. She previously served as adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh (where she won the Excellence in Teaching Award twice), Loyola University Maryland, and Northern Virginia Community College. She teaches all levels of Chinese at PVI and moderates the National Chinese Honor Society and Asian Culture Club.

I feel very fortunate—from administration to faculty and staff—everyone is so talented, kind, and willing to teach me and share with me patiently.” As Pope Francis says, ’You are going to learn from the people before you teach them anything.’”
PVI students studying Chinese traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an, China in 2015 and 2019. In addition to international travel, PVI’s Chinese program takes a field trip to the National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC. Wang shares, “I’m planning a joint field trip with Sidwell Friends School and NOVA to

Mental Health Matters
Senior Kabir Chugh organized a golf tournament that raised $26,500 for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Kabir was inspired when a friend ran her own charity golf tournament, and he realized it would be a fun summer project that would also be beneficial for people in need.
“I wanted to pick a cause that doesn’t receive as much attention as it should. There are many donors to causes such as the Red Cross and St. Jude, but I felt as though NAMI doesn’t get enough attention, especially for how important the topic of mental health has become due to the pandemic.”
To prepare for his “We’re All in this Together” golf tournament, Kabir made a registration website and reached out to International Country Club to coordinate the event and arrange for food and beverage. He contacted NAMI Virginia and secured a guest speaker. The day went extremely well, attracting 96 golfers and raising $26,500.
Portia Chan, NAMI Virginia’s Development Director, said, “At a time when needs for mental health support, education, and advocacy have increased, leaders like Kabir are beacons of hope.”
Helping Children Smile
This summer, senior Olivia Woo traveled to Guatemala with Mission of Mercy to help conduct a dental clinic. “My experience in Guatemala was truly life changing and very eye opening. Everyone we helped was so appreciative and grateful that we were there,” she shares.
Olivia served as a dental assistant and provided teeth cleanings and cavity prevention to children. She learned how to improvise with the materials available and found creative ways to do the work. Olivia was also able to assist her mother, a pediatric dentist, during extractions and fillings. During the mission, the group saw almost 1,600 patients in three and a half days.
“I’ve always had an interest in pursuing something in the medical field. This experience was a great opportunity to see other specialties, while also exploring the dental field. I was able to help over 40 kids and I felt so fulfilled. My dream job is to become a pediatric dentist, and this trip definitely influenced my career path. The smiles on the kids’ faces made everything worth it.”

New Additions to Campus Ministry
There are a few new faces in Campus Ministry this year.
Emily Chinchilla, Coordinator of Campus Ministry
Emily Chinchilla started at Paul VI last year as a Theology and ACE teacher. She loved working with students to grow in their faith and having in-depth conversations with them after class. When former coordinator Joyce Krolicki decided to lessen her hours at PVI and focus on missions and pilgrimages, she suggested that Emily apply for the role.
Ms. Chinchilla’s education from Franciscan University in Theology and Catechetics, as well as ministering to high school students, helped her realize she always wanted to be in Campus Ministry in a high school setting.
“My goal is to have an encounter with all 1,100 students. I don’t know what that exactly looks like, but I’m up for the challenge,” she shares.
So far, Ms. Chinchilla has found that retreats are a special way to connect with students. She was surprised that, for some, it is their first time away from home and away from their phones and technology. Emily now realizes that the experience is more than just building a relationship with God; it is helping them prepare for life. She looks forward to the upcoming pilgrimage and to walking with them in their faith which goes far beyond what they learn in religion class and their textbooks.
“I look forward to working with Fr. Schultz and the Campus Ministry team to build on Paul VI traditions. I want all students to feel welcome at Campus Ministry, regardless of their background or faith. All are welcome here!”
Mia McIntyre, Campus Ministry Assistant and Service Coordinator
Mia McIntyre, our new Campus Ministry Assistant, loves working with the students at Paul VI. Her Catholic faith has always been an important role in her life, from attending Franciscan University to being an elementary school teacher, working at the National Institute for Newman Studies, and raising five children with her husband, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Mia says that the Lord has blessed her family in so many ways, and she is happy to share the blessings and show students how fruitful service and love to others can be more fulfilling than possessions.
She learned about the job from her predecessor Mary Chris Beardsley when the two were in a woman’s bible study at Corpus Christi Parish. Mia says, “This is an amazing school. The first week I was here, I was so impressed by the staff and the faculty on how welcoming they are. I felt the presence of the Lord and a joyful spirit within the building. Everyone is genuine and caring, and many were just excited to meet somebody new.”
Mia enjoys seeing students every day, welcoming them to Campus Ministry, and hearing their desires for service. While Mia says she is a perfectionist, she also has a lot of patience and flexibility that assist her in her position as the Service for Others Coordinator.
Kieran Koch, Youth Apostle
(YA) Missionary
Kieran joins current YA Missionary Nick Zaso this year to assist in helping students have a relationship with Christ. The Youth Apostles want students to dive into their faith and to be involved in the sacraments and in Campus Ministry. Kieran became Catholic after his freshman year at Virginia Tech and graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He also recently committed to discerning the consecrated life of YA in order to dedicate his life to growing in his love for God, to the service of the Church, his brothers in the community, and young people.
Kieran says, “I want students to make their faith life their own and have a relationship with God, especially as they move forward out of high school into the real world. I don’t want what they learn in class just to be facts about what the Bible or what our Catholic faith says, but how does that knowledge affect you and your life every day.”
Kieran is also the moderator of the Weightlifting Club, which is something Kieran competes in outside of PVI. He makes the analogy that you need to be strong for yourself, for your friends, and for Christ. “You put in what you get out of it. Glorify and thank the Lord for the strength he has given us and for the health of our bodies,” he shares.
“Working out can cause pain, sore legs, a sore back or calluses, but push through it—accepting and knowing that I’ll be stronger in a week or a month or a year because I’m putting in the work right now. That is the same as your prayer and faith life, it will be hard and painful at times, and it takes sacrifice and suffering, but keep at it because the more you put in, the more you will receive because God is great in that way.”
“All are welcome here!”

Spotlight on the Panther Cafe Food brings people together!
Meet Chef Parker
Growing up with her mom as a single parent, Chef April’s mom would leave step-by-step instructions to make dinner, which started her on the path of being a chef.
Chef April Parker started working at Paul VI during the pandemic. Her first task was to go through all items from the Fairfax kitchen, pack them up, move them into the new building, and set up the new kitchen. Parker has used her previous work experience to develop The Panther Café into what it is today and what it can be in the future.
Chef April was trained in various positions she held previously, including DC Central Kitchen, a hotel, a restaurant, Martha’s Table, Revolution Foods for the DC charter schools district, and St. Theresa’s School in Ashburn. She also attended school to receive her food certification. Revolution Foods taught her how to cook in bulk, follow health guidelines for students, use a steam kettle for cooking, and determine quantities and package food that needed to be delivered and heated up.
“I really loved working at Martha’s Table. It was fulfilling to feed people experiencing homelessness and provide meals for infants and children in their education programs,” shares Chef April. “It was hard work, but I learned a lot about cooking for kids and how to be creative with food since there was not much funding and most of the food was donated.” Her favorite memory was when First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha volunteered at the kitchen and gave her a bottle of White House honey.
A good baked potato with all the fixings, a wellseasoned fried pork chop, and corn on the cob.
Food is everything to the Parker family and anytime the family gets together, they talk about food and what they will make and eat first. Growing up with her mom as a single parent, Chef April’s mom would leave step-by-step instructions to make dinner, which started her on the path of being a chef.

What’s on the Menu?
A special feature of the Panther Café is the Chef’s Corner which offers house-made entrees, soups, sandwiches, and wraps that are associated with a specific culture or restaurant theme that changes each week. Some examples have been Greek/Mediterranean, Indian, Italian, Caribbean/Jamaican, Irish, Chinese/Asian, Mexican/Chipotle, Popeyes, and Arby’s.
Every week, there is a different type of pasta with a variety of sauces. Chef April tries to mix it up and gives out samples so students can try new things before they purchase.
Every day the café has hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken tenders, and a variety of different fries. In a day, the café goes through 17 cases of chicken tenders (1,224 servings) and five cases of fries (540 servings). All are baked and not fried. According to Chef April, students love the crispy ones.
Chef April’s goal is to perfect baking pastries, desserts, bread, and dough. She shares that eventually she would like to be able to make the dough in-house for pizza, flatbreads and rolls.
Tools of the Trade
Chef April’s favorite tools/appliances are the slicer and tilt skillet. Other appliances in the Panther Café are a smoothie maker, panini presses, a pizza maker, and a new grill that was installed over Christmas break. The new kitchen has a walk-in freezer and walk-in refrigerator, stoves, braising pans, and ovens that can convection bake, air fry, or broil.

A Championship Season
For the first time since 1999, Varsity Football competed for a championship, playing in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Metro Division Finals on Sunday, November 20. The Panthers faced off against Archbishop Carroll at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. It was a close defensive battle throughout the first half, with PVI taking a halftime lead of 13-8. As the third period began, PVI took command and scored on a pick-6 interception touchdown taking a 21-8 lead. The Carroll squad quickly marched down the field and scored a touchdown of their own to close the gap 21-16. The Panthers were undaunted, scoring a TD at the close of the 3rd quarter to take a 28-16 lead. However, the 4th quarter belonged to the Carroll Lions who took a commanding 46-28 lead as the clock ran out.

A Friend in Moldova
David Smith ’06 has led an effort that helped tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees
oldova is one of Europe’s poorest countries and David Smith ’06 has made it his home. During his time there, he has served as a Peace Corp volunteer, opened multiple businesses, battled against government corruption, and led an effort that provided vital supplies to tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees. It’s been a wild ride for David since his time growing up in Fairfax Station. After graduating from Paul VI in 2006, David attended Georgia Tech and graduated with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. At a job fair he met a Peace Corps recruiter, and having heard about the Peace Corps from his PVI Spanish teacher Mrs. Pam McCarthy, David pursued it.
He spent nine months in Kazakhstan teaching English before Peace Corps evacuated the country for security reasons, including Russian pressure. He then completed a two year Peace Corps Service working in community development in Moldova, a small country sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine.
After concluding his service, David decided to stay in Moldova. He and a friend from Peace Corps saw that — though corruption was a huge problem — the market was underdeveloped and there were a lot of opportunities in the country.
“We decided to stay and open a business we believed in. At the same time, we committed to run a clean, bribe and corruption free, fully compliant company. And that we
would be loud about the challenges we faced,” shares David.
In 2015, David opened Smokehouse, an American-style BBQ restaurant and craft beer pub. The restaurant did well, and was especially popular with locals, expats, and Peace Corp volunteers. However, after a few years of success, the Covid-19 pandemic made it challenging to stay open. David kept Smokehouse open as long as he could, but had to close the original restaurant in December 2021.
A month after closing Smokehouse, Putin invaded Ukraine.
Moldova borders Ukraine on three sides, and there was a sudden influx of refugees into the tiny country. Almost immediately, David turned his closed restaurant space into a donation and distribution center.
David and his friends, (many also Returned Peace Corps Volunteers involved in the nonprofit Friends of Moldova), went all out to help.
In the first two days alone, they supported at least 2,075 refugees with critical needs and outfitted 36 shelters around the city with bedding, linens, blankets, towels, food, water, hot meals, hygiene items, clothing, and toys. These supplies went both to those fleeing Ukraine, as well as to Moldovans sheltering Ukrainians in their homes.
For months, using Smokehouse as a base, David and Friends of Moldova provided a large portion of aid to refugees in the city, until international agencies finally arrived.
According to David, in the time Smokehouse was acting as a direct distribution center they raised and spent around $500,000 (around $30,000/week) in food and supplies, most of it raised through small donations.

David Smith ’06 (left) and his business partner Vlad behind the bar at Smokehouse, an American-style BBQ restaurant and craft beer pub they established, and later used as a distribution center for providing Ukrainian refugees with vital supplies.
Their work was critical and did not go unnoticed. The president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, visited Smokehouse in March 2022 to express her appreciation for their efforts. The Director of Peace Corps visited the operation a few weeks later to show support. Over the course of a few months, Friends of Moldova funds were used to provide food, hygiene products, clothes, diapers, and other essential goods for over 38,198 Ukrainians at Smokehouse alone.
Citing Smokehouse’s work on both the refugee response and anti-corruption stance, the U.S. Embassy in Moldova nominated Smokehouse for a State Department Award for Corporate Excellence, and as a result, David’s business has received an award citation from the U.S. State Department.
Friends of Moldova now has a distribution center in the north of the country and continues to distribute supplies five days a week. They are planning to maintain operations through 2023.
When asked about the future, David reflects, “For the time being, there is no certainty about what is coming and no way to see a week, much less a month in advance. So for now, I’m looking forward to the fact that this war, like all wars, will one day end.”
David plans to remain in the area for the foreseeable future. He has been married to a Moldavan woman for over three years and he has opened a new restaurant called Taproom 27, which serves craft beer and tex-mex. He also has a new brewing enterprise (with a new hard cider product that is selling well).
In addition to his humanitarian efforts, David is committed to improving the situation for business owners in Moldova. He is the president of the Moldova Small Enterprise Alliance, which is dedicated to advocating against corruption and for a fairer, more transparent, business environment in Moldova. He publishes a Substack newsletter called Moldova
Matters, where he covers what he sees in the business environment and discusses current events.
Building community and bringing about positive change are at the heart of what David hopes to achieve. “Values are at the core of our business. Some are easy to link to a restaurant, such as customer service, teamwork, and promoting innovative products. Others are core to who we are. As Americans, we felt it critical not to succumb to the ’norms’ of bribery and corruption that we knew were distorting the market and keeping the poorest country in Europe right there. Many, many Moldovans also share these values, which brought us to our main goal in the company — building a community.”
“We now play a small but very active role in this community of change and that’s right where we set out to be.”

In Danger of Being
“A thing we talk about in library school is that there are very few library emergencies,” shares Alex Wingate ’14. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Alex and others in her field saw just this type of emergency arise. Since early 2022, Alex has been using her background in information and library science to help digitally preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage in danger of being lost.
“When the war broke out, I thought, ’This is so terrible. How can I help? I’m thousands of miles away and a random PhD student, what could I actually do?’” recounts Alex.
Fortuitously, Alex’s skill set was able to meet the needs of the moment. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies and Linguistics from William & Mary, a Master of Arts in

the History of the Book from University of London, a Master of Library Science from Indiana University, and is currently in her second year of a PhD in Information Science at Indiana.
“Someone I follow on Twitter in the digital humanities and library community posted that they were starting a project of emergency web archiving of Ukrainian cultural heritage materials. I knew this was a way I could directly help.”
The organization Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO) is made up of over 1,500 international volunteers collaborating online to digitize and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage. Since the start of the invasion, SUCHO has webarchived more than 5,000 websites and 50TB of data. The websites range from national archives to local museums, from 3D tours of churches to children’s art centers.
Alex describes various SUCHO initiatives: “The initial effort was using web crawlers to go through different websites and copy files. Some pages were easy; you just point the web crawler to the page and it does its thing.” Thousands of URLs were also sent to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine for archiving.
Some materials are more labor intensive, for instance 3D virtual tours. Alex worked on Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. She recalls, “I worked for six hours ’wandering’ through to record all the different angles of the beautiful cathedral, which is filled with Eastern style mosaics, trying to record all the different distances and pieces of art — in case, God forbid, the church would get damaged.”
SUCHO also performs situation monitoring, tracking what areas are under attack and should be of focus. “Most of us
have never been to Ukraine and we don’t know where all the museums are located. So SUCHO volunteers use Google Street View to ’walk around’ and look for structures that could be museums or libraries. Then we try to find out what they are, if they have a website, and start downloading materials.”
After compiling thousands of images and PDFs into an Internet Archive collection, volunteers are now working on adding contextual information. Alex is currently leading the effort of adding metadata to a Google spreadsheet of about 6,000 files.
“The importance of metadata is to add descriptions and context to all the digital files, so that they can be searchable on Internet Archive. More importantly, if a library loses their servers it would help them rebuild their catalogs, databases, and websites if SUCHO can give them copies of all their files back,” Alex explains.
Alex sets aside time each week out of her busy PhD schedule for SUCHO. She hosts coworking sessions on Zoom where she trains other volunteers. So far, about 100 volunteers have been working on the metadata and they are about 75% of the way through the spreadsheet.
Alex recently taught a unit on metadata in the class she TAs and used the example of SUCHO to show how the class has been directly applicable to real world events.
“This effort has been good for me in terms of thinking through how to adapt what are normally very professional, thoughtful processes into an emergency situation where information could go offline suddenly or be destroyed. It has been very comforting that I can do something — and use the skills I have to help with a very specific problem.”

ANNUAL REPORT
ST. PAUL VI CATHOLIC HIGH
The Importance of Every Ingredient
he other day, as I looked at a tattered recipe card for my grandmother’s Sweet Potato Casserole, I realized how relevant the recipe was to education and giving. Every ingredient carries a purpose, and every measurement critical. Whether it is a tablespoon of sugar or three pounds of potatoes, each plays a vital role in the dish being a success. Without one of these items, the recipe does not work.
As an alumna, parent, and employee, I can attest to the parallel with an education at PVI.
An English paper may have beautiful words woven together to tell a story; however, the prepositions—likely smaller in size than other words in a sentence—act as connectors and descriptors. Remove a piece of a math problem, and the outcome is significantly different. An artist’s palette needs even the basic colors to achieve the tints, shades, and hues that bring his or her vision to life. And chemistry lends itself to being a true “recipe for disaster” without precise measurements.
The importance of every ingredient is also evident in the growing and generous support of our PVI community. Throughout this year’s Annual Report, we share stats and facts that show how gifts of all sizes work together to make the PVI experience possible for our students, faculty, staff, and families.
As with any recipe, the ingredients play a pivotal role; however, they need someone to prepare, measure, mix, and make the dish come to life. While we focus on the donors who make things possible in the Annual Report, we also thank those who answer our call to volunteer their time, share their stories in our classrooms, and give us a sounding board when we need some expertise. Thank you to our School Board and committees, Panther Parent Organization, Class and Parent Ambassadors, Athletics, Theatre and Music Boosters, mentors, guest speakers, and all of our friends who we feverishly call or text to ask for a lending hand.
Together, our recipe, and our “bakers and chefs” give us an end product that helps to nourish our souls—spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially—as we continue to live out the mission of PVI and build on 40 years of growing in grace and wisdom.
Thank you for choosing to be a part of another strong year of giving. With great appreciation, Kate Grimm Andreottola ’94, P ’25 Director of Advancement

The Gift of a PVI Education
We asked several students in the graduating Class of 2022 what gifts PVI had given to them.
“PVI truly is a family and that is a real gift.”
“My teachers are such an amazing gift. They are always there for me no matter what.”
“PVI has given me the gift of life skills.”
Help make all these gifts (and more!) possible by making your own gift to Paul VI. Scan the QR code on this page or visit www.paulvi.net/give.
“My teammates are the greatest gift ever.”
“PVI has given me an outlet for my creativity.”
“PVI has given me the gift of compassion and understanding.”
“It is a gift to attend morning Mass every day.”

Inspired to Give Back
Salnoskes Endow PVI's First Full Tuition Scholarship to Honor Imelda Salnoske
hen you ask Karl Salnoske who inspires him, he beams with a contagious smile. As if instinctual, he reaches for the medal that hangs around his neck. A gift from his mom Imelda given to him as a young man, he proudly holds up his St. Christopher medal. “It has had a few different chains, but the medal is the one my mother gave me,” he shares. The gift from his mom suits him—as the parallels between St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, who carried a child safely across a river, is not lost on Karl. He embodies a love of traveling and a generous heart committed to education and the future of our children.
One of five children to Carlton and Imelda “Melody” Salnoske, Karl grew up in a large Catholic family, living on an Army salary, moving regularly. The influences of family, education, and hard work are evident the more you get to know Karl. So is the commitment to give back, something he says he and his wife feel fortunate to be able to do.
Prior to 2016, Karl and his wife Susan shared no direct connection to PVI, which makes their generous scholarship for a PVI education even more inspiring. Karl serves as the Chairperson of the Board for the Foundation for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington. He explains the purpose of the Foundation as a way to provide “opportunities to create endowments and donor-advised funds centered on Catholic giving.” By doing so within the Diocese, it keeps giving local and Catholic-centered, with direct impact on many areas the diocese supports, including Catholic education.
In March of 2016, ready to part with a drum set that had brought him many good memories, Karl generously offered it to the Diocesan high schools. PVI and Jan Siegfried, the Instrumental Music Director, said yes. While the drum set served the music program well, it opened the door to learning more about Karl’s story: the son of an Army father and a mother who loved music and education, to being an Eagle Scout, studying to be an
electrical engineer, to now working in high-tech as the Senior Vice President of Cloud Engineering and Operations at Athenahealth.
A drum set that originally found a home in Fairfax led the Salnoskes to make a gift in memory of Karl's mom to the Building on Extraordinary Campaign for the Music Room on the new campus. Five years after his donation of a drum set, and following their campaign gift, Karl and his wife Susan endowed a scholarship, named in memory of his mother Imelda, to cover the full cost of tuition for four years for a student wishing to attend Paul VI.
“It is not just education that leads to success, it is the right education,” he shares. Karl chooses to turn his success into an opportunity for others to find the right education. He recognizes the financial challenges that face many families who desire a Catholic education and experience barriers to making it possible.
Drawing from his Eagle Scout days, Karl still lives by the simplicity of the motto to “be prepared.”
“Education prepares you for an unknown future,” he says. He believes that an education gives you the foundational pieces that allow you to perform your best and take advantage of opportunities.
The Salnoskes will forever change the lives of many families with the gift of a PVI education. In doing so, they embody the values of St. Christopher in his strength, stressing the importance of family, and allowing students to start on their own journey as lifelong learners and workers.
46 PANTHER TRACKS Fall/Winter 2022 DONOR PROFILE
Profile of Imelda Salnoske
The Imelda Salnoske Memorial Scholarship honors the memory and strong Catholic faith of Imelda “Melody” Salnoske, of Hampton, Virginia. Melody was born on a dairy farm near Cashton, Wisconsin in 1928 and grew up in a very large Catholic family with many brothers and sisters. She was one of the first in her family to get a college education, graduating from the La Crosse State Teachers College with a degree in Secondary Education.
She met her future husband Carlton at age 24 at a soda shop near Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, where he was attending an Army training camp. Together they raised five children. After her kids were grown, Melody went back to teaching English at her parish elementary school and eventually became a librarian with the Newport News school system, retiring in 1993.
Melody loved music and had a beautiful lyric soprano voice. For many years, she was a member of her parish choir and the Virginia Choral Society. Live opera was
one of her favorites and she was a regular season ticket holder to the Virginia Opera.
Melody was given plenty of heavy crosses to bear; however, she never complained. Her love for her family and her faith in God gave her the strength not only to go on but to love life without bitterness.
Melody passed away in October 2018 at age 89 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
The Imelda Salnoske Memorial Scholarship was established in 2022 by Karl and Susan Salnoske to honor the memory of Karl’s mother, Mrs. Imelda Salnoske. The scholarship provides a four-year, full tuition scholarship for a student with demonstrated financial need who is accepted for admission to St. Paul VI Catholic High School and who possesses similar qualities to Mrs. Imelda Salnsoke, including her commitment to hard work, compassion for others, and perseverance.
