Welcome to Kaslo!
F O U R
S E A S O N
Kaslo is a charming and bustling little village located at the delta of Kaslo River, on Kootenay Lake. At
last count, the population was 1,032. With beautiful treelined avenues and heritage houses at every turn, Kaslo is the quintessential small town of everyone’s imagination. Kaslo, originally called Kane’s Landing, was founded in 1893 and was the region’s first incorporated city. The town soon became known as the commercial centre of the gold, silver and lead mining industries. Kaslo’s peaceful cove, one of only a few such natural harbours along the 97 mile long lake, bustled with activity. Ore barges, rowboats, private launches and steamships all jostled for a place alongside the busy wharf. Today, Kaslo is as pretty as a postcard with an abundance of Victorian architecture that recalls the sunshine days of the British empire. At Kaslo’s annual May Days, people gather, as they have since the village was incorporated, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday and watch the May Pole dance. In August, the village becomes the centre of the best jazz festival around, and the enchanting sound of the music filters through the summer days from its genesis in Kaslo Bay. For summer visitors there are many hiking and biking trails, great camping and beaches for swimming. Kaslo also has one of the most scenic golf courses in the area; one which you can get to know and love as if it were your own private course. Kootenay Lake is famous for the giant Gerrard rainbow trout (some weighing as much as 32 lbs) which are truly a fisherman’s dream. Kaslo has often been called “Rainbow Country” for both its trout and its many beautiful rainbows. In winter, Kaslo is your gateway to alpine skiing, catskiing cross-country skiing, skating and snowmobiling.

A stroll down Front Street will bring you to the majestic SS Moyie, one of the last great sternwheelers. Just seeing her instills visions of what her glory days on Kootenay Lake must have been like. The Langham Cultural Centre, another heritage site, provides a venue for local artists and theatre groups as well as presenting a view of Japanese-Canadian internment during the Second World War. The Village of Kaslo has undergone dramatic changes since the boom days of the 1890s. Where there were once 27 saloons full of boisterous prospectors, there is now a myriad of activities for everybody to enjoy. Rich in history, strong in community spirit, spectacular in location, Kaslo offers those who live there a quality of life others can only envy.

his is an area filled with creative people who are inspired by our beautiful surroundings of lakes and mountains. From pottery to painting, sculptures to quilts, there is much to choose from. If you are looking for the perfect handmade gift for yourself or friends, you will not be disappointed. Explore the studios, galleries and shops of the artists and artisans mentioned here.
1. David Stewart
divides his time between making things out of wood and making music. He spends as much time as possible in his Argenta workshop. His specialty is turned wood products — everything from spurtles to large salad bowls. Most of his products have a practical use, but he gently pushes the limits of his craft, with eccentric turnings and ebonized wood, resulting in some unique pieces. See ad page 6.
2. Fern Van Horn
Handmade guitar by Jeremy Behn
Native to BC, Fern Van Horn has been drawing and painting her whole life. Fern works primarily in water colour or acrylic; her subjects are usually those with a “past” – old trucks, old toys or gnarly old trees. Light and colour characterize Fern’s work and charge it with a sense of excitement and energy. “I am inspired to give my subjects one more chance at centre stage.” Her work is displayed in various galleries and at Fern’s on Front Street. See ad page 6.
3. Jeremy Behn
Trained by master luthiers Michael Dunn and Ray Nurse, Jeremy has been building and repairing instruments for 15 years. A recipient of a Canada Council grant and BC Arts Council grant, Jeremy is an accomplished musician as well as skilled in the art of building and repairing stringed instruments. See ad page 6 - Instruments of Change.”
4. Sarah Lawless
creates a line of porcelain ceramics, combining ergonomic usability with a sculptural emphasis on form. Her pots are thrown on a wheel and altered into imaginative fluid forms with soft matte surfaces and earth-toned glazes. She worked as assistant to acclaimed potter Wayne Ngan, and has a Diploma in Craft and Design from Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, BC. Her work been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and has earned her several awards, including a 2008 BC Creative Achievement Award. See ad page 6. www.visitkaslo.com
5. Eliza Fry
“From an early age I have always loved to draw, paint, cut, glue and assemble,” says Eliza. While growing up Eliza was sure she would become either an artist or an architect. Mixed media combines all the different techniques Eliza has tried and has become her favourite medium. Creating art is Eliza’s meditation, spirituality and means of communicating with the rest of humanity. Through her art she also makes statements about personal and social issues. See ad page 6. The citizens of this small village show a resourcefulness as great as the mountains, rivers
and lakes that are features of the landscape in which they live. In 1889 and 1890 G.O. Buchanan and brothers George and David Kane came to Kaslo to stake timber claims. When silver mining activity was reported in the area, the Kane brothers subdivided their lease into town lots. The population soon grew to 3,000 people, most of them intent on seeking their fortunes in the newly discovered mines. Disaster struck in 1894 as fire, flood and gale force winds came in succession. In February, half of the town’s commercial district was destroyed, as well as 60-70 houses, two hotels, the jail and several other two storey buildings. By 1895 and 1896, Kaslo had turned her fortunes around with the completion of the K&S Railway, a public telephone system, and electric and waterworks plants. By 1897 Kaslo had all the services of a progressive mining supply centre: a cigar factory, brewery, dry goods stores, several saloons, hotels and brothels and its own newspaper-The Kootenaian. Over the next 50 years, metal prices fell and mining costs rose, resulting in a decline in mining activity and in the viability of the town. For a while fruit-ranching was a thriving industry until the Little Cherry disease destroyed the marketability of the fruit. But the villagers never gave up. Eventually a home-grown economy was created that was varied enough to withstand the changes of time. Tourism, small and home based businesses are now the foundation of Kaslo’s prosperity.
Front Street: What’s Old is New Again Over the last 25 years, merchants along Kaslo’s main street have stripped away the “modern” cladding and have painstakingly restored the highly decorative and characteristically western facades of the original storefronts. A different story has played out for the Kaslo Hotel – its new owners have effected the re-birth of an idea. The original Kaslo Hotel, built on the same location in 1896, was very grand and fine for its time. In the early 20th century, it was the heart of a bustling and optimistic community. But the promise represented by its lavish detail and stately interior spaces waned along with the fortunes of the townspeople and it fell into disrepair, finally closing in the 1920s. The building was then acquired by the village for non-payment of taxes. From 1942 to 1945 it was used as housing for Japanese-Canadian internees. In 1950 it burned to the ground. A new Kaslo Hotel was constructed and opened in 1958 on the original site. It operated continuously, although its name was changed to the Mariner Inn in 1981. In 2006 the Mariner was sold. The present building, renamed The Kaslo Hotel, has been completely transformed so that, once again, an elegant establishment graces the top of Front Street.

The SS Moyie
T
he SS Moyie is one of Kaslo’s gems. She holds within her hull the history of an entire region and the stories of its settlement. It has been over 50 years since the SS Moyie, the oldest intact passenger sternwheeler in the world, made her last sailing on Kootenay Lake. Today the ship is dry-docked and open to the public. Spend a morning touring its interior and see elegant Victorian decor, historic artifacts, and realistic displays. For nearly 60 years, sternwheelers provided a transportation lifeline to the many isolated communities on Kootenay Lake. The SS Moyie and her sister ships literally opened the Kootenay region to miners, businesses, farmers and pioneer families. When she was launched on October 22, 1898, there were no roads, no trains, and of course no air travel into these hidden mountain valleys. The ships were the only means of mass transportation, freight and mail service. And so they came – the rich, the poor, prospectors and settlers – sailing up the pristine waterways on ships that were themselves works of art. The sternwheelers were the bearers of our destiny. When she was finally dry docked in 1957 the Village of Kaslo purchased the Moyie from the CPR for the grand sum of $1.00. Breathing life into her history has involved thousands of hours of labour, research and the skills of a generation of workers. The Langham Hotel was built in 1896 during the heyday of mining. It was so busy during this economic high time that beds were rented in three shifts a day. The bar ran from the front of the building right to the back and never stopped serving up drinks. As years passed, the hotel saw many other incarnations, a bottling plant, a wooden boat factory and a bank. During the Second World War the Langham was used as an internment centre for approximately 80 Canadians of Japanese descent. As time went on, it fell into disrepair, and there was a movement to tear down the building. In the 1970s a group of energetic young people believed it could be restored and become the local cultural centre. After much hard work and fundraising, they succeeded, and a new era began for the Langham. Today, the Langham houses galleries, studios and offices, an intimate theatre space, and the Japanese Canadian Museum. During the year the public can view a variety of art shows in the galleries, listen to guest artists performing in the theatre or participate in workshops covering a wide spectrum of disciplines. The summer Artists In Action series offers artists the opportunity to work on their own projects under the mentorship of professional visual and literary artists. The self guided tour of the Japanese Canadian Museum boasts a series of photographs and writings hung on the walls of the stairwell and the second and third floor hallways. There are some newly installed sound stations where you can hear the voices of some internees who were housed there during World War ll. On the third floor there is also a re-creation of the living quarters of a family of Nisei (Canadian citizens of Japanese descent);

The Japanese Canadian Museum was opened on May 23, 1993 and dedicated to the Japanese Canadians, their courage under adversity and their ability to overcome injustice. The Kootenay Star Mining Museum celebrates Kaslo’s rich heritage of mining and forestry. Relics on display depict the toil, the danger and hardships that were experienced by the pioneering families of days gone by. A visit to the museum gives visitors the chance to reminisce about a time when Kaslo was the gateway to the “mining metropolis of the world”; when fortunes were made and lost in a day during the Kootenay mining boom. After your visit, enjoy the warm atmosphere at Teresa’s, a unique coffee shop attached to the museum, which serves homemade delectables, sandwiches, espresso coffees and ice cream.

Festivals and Events
Music in the Bay
J
AZZ, JAZZ, JAZZ! It’ll be another unforgettable weekend at this year’s Kaslo Jazz Etc Festival. Bands are making their way from around the world to play in the outdoor natural amphitheatre of Kaslo Bay Park. This festival fills the air with music every year on the August long weekend: this year July 30 through August 1. USA Today rated this festival as one of the top 10 in North America. The venue is breathtaking...mountains rising over 10,000 feet from the lake are the backdrop for the performers. Musicians entertain from a floating stage in the bay. The audience can watch and listen while reclining on the sandy beach, or even while swimming in the water around the stage. This year’s the lineup of great music includes: Circo de Teatro, Terminal Station, Melody Diachun, John Korsrud Septet, Bad Plus, Cheryl Hodge, Camilo Nu, Ehtrane, Tambura Rasa, Arsen Shomakhov, Spyro Gyra and many more. Check out www.kaslojazzfest.com for the schedule, ticket prices and information about the performers. Food and craft vendors are on site at the park. You are welcome to bring your own picnic but no glass bottles will be allowed. Festival organizers are striving for a goal of zero waste, so vendors will be using all compostable plates and cups and recycling bins will be available.
Kaslo Heritage Week For a week in the month of February Kaslo celebrates its rich history and diverse heritage. Visitors and locals can tour many of Kaslo’s historic landmarks, with volunteers in many of the buildings offering a guided step back in time. City Hall, Kootenay Lake Archives and local churches are just some of the tours to take in. The week’s celebration is topped off with a Tea and Pie Social on Saturday afternoon.
May Days
I
t has been over 100 years that Kaslo villagers have celebrated Queen Victoria’s birthday with a rollicking spring festival. In the old days the sternwheelers ran excursion trips from Nelson and stopped to pick up revellers at every point along the way, while others arrived in every type of boat and conveyance, filling the streets of Kaslo with miners, prospectors and their families. The main events of May Days back then were a horse race down Front Street, with prizes as high as $250, and a unique “Prospectors’ Race.” Prospectors would line up on the street with all their camping equipment; during the race, they had to pitch their tents, light a campfire, set up their cooking equipment, mix bannock and cook it! At today’s celebration the prospectors are few and far between, but the fun and competition continues with logger sports, ball games, games for kids and all sorts of great activities. Come May 22 to 24 to celebrate with the villagers the tradition that they have kept alive, without missing a single year, since 1892. As ever, a highlight of the weekend is the May Pole dance. To the delight of the audience, young dancers weave ribbons around the May Pole in time to the music of a fiddle and flute. While you’re watching the children weave their intricate pattern, turn around and you’ll notice the older people either beaming or with tears in their eyes – they are surely remembering the day that they too danced this ancient dance with ribbons in their hands. Saturday and Sunday are filled with ball games, Kaslo’s award winning logger sports competition (see pg 22, 27), the car show and a craft fair. On Monday join the crowds watching the parade and then the May Pole dance. Then relax to music in the park. It is a festival not to be missed. Be sure to mark the dates – May 22-24.

t’s entirely possible that the planting of flowers in other places than the gardener’s own property has been a clandestine movement in Kaslo since the first gardener found herself with just too many lily tubers. If you happen to notice a yellow iris halfway up a steep trailside bank or spot a flash of orange from a patch of daylilies nod- Kaslo. A Community in Bloom. ding between some river rocks, you’ve seen the evidence of one of Kaslo’s guerilla gardeners – maybe from 1909, maybe from 2009. The beautification of Kaslo with flowers and landscaping took an official turn just last year. Communities in Bloom is a phenomenon that has spread right across Canada, engaging gardeners in both villages and cities. Kaslo entered the BC competition in 2009, with a tiny flower budget and a handful of volunteers. For its first showing, Kaslo did very well in its category, garnering 4 blooms out of a possible 5. The judges were particularly impressed by the efforts Kaslo has made to preserve its architectural heritage, as well as the work of the Kaslo Trailblazers. Kaslo’s green-thumbed volunteers have already decided to repeat the Communities in Bloom experience. In 2010 watch for ever more blooms and lovely little vistas throughout the village of Kaslo.

On the Water
Houseboating on Kootenay Lake
or those who enjoy water activities, you can launch your boat at Kaslo Bay Park; or if you sail into town you can moor at the Kaslo docks free for 48 hours. You can explore the beaches, wakeboard, water ski and tube. Grab your gear and go fishing for dollies or kokanee at the river mouths or on the lake.
xperience the Kootenays like never before – on a houseboat from Kaslo Shipyards. As captain and crew, you decide how busy or relaxing you want your holiday to be. These houseboats have a unique design that can withstand the demands of a lake the size of the Kootenay and are furnished with a spacious wheelhouse, full galley, bathroom and sleeping facilities for four, six or eight people. Go to www.kasloshipyard.com for more information about the fleet and their rates.

Fishing
If fishing is your passion, come to Kaslo for some of the best you will find on this planet. You can rent a boat, or charter one with a guide. There are also many small mountain lakes in the area, accessible by trail or forest service roads, where you can enjoy some peaceful and private fishing. If you only have an hour, there is good fishing right off the shore of Kootenay Lake at the river mouths. Fish for world class Gerrard rainbows, beautiful Dolly Varden and bountiful kokanee, all in a pristine setting. No matter the season there is always some fishing to be had. You can get your fishing licence and lots of information (and fish tales) at Barren’s Sport Shop and Woodbury Resort. Both Barren’s and Woodbury have a great variety of tackle to complete your Kootenay kit. Great tips for fishing Kootenay Lake & Area from Barren’s Sport Shop: Peak bull trout (locals call them dollies) fishing is April through July. Try standing right at the river mouths and casting with spoons and buck tail jigs. Or from a boat, go down deep to 40-100 feet with hoochies and flashers or plugs and troll about 3 miles an hour. Kokanee fishing is best from July to August. You can fly fish for kokanee, but trolling is the most productive way to go. Remember to troll really slow, about 2.5 miles an hour right on the surface, using wedding rings with maggots. Best fishing for Gerrard rainbows is October to December. On colder days fish right on the surface, going deeper if it’s a warmer day. Polar Bear are the favoured fly, Black and White, Grey Ghost, November Special and Root Beer Float are some of the most popular. Tie these right onto your line and drag behind the boat or on a planer board at speeds up to 5 miles an hour. For deeper fishing try Apexes and plugs. Try dipping your plugs in scent just to add a little extra enticement for the fish! Popular spots for trolling are Campbell Bay, Fry Creek, Shutty Bench bluffs, Davis Creek and just across from Kaslo at the rock bluffs, the place the locals call the “Ink Spots”. You can always ask at the local tackle shop if you need directions, instructions and the hottest tips. Good luck and happy fishing!!

Kaslo River Hiking Trails
The Kaslo Trailblazers Society welcomes all visitors to the network of trails they have recently completed along the north and south sides of the Kaslo River. All the trails can be accessed from right in town. The north side trail is wheelchair and bicycle accessible, while the south side trail meanders through a moss covered forest. The two are joined by a pedestrian bridge, 106 feet long, which spans the Kaslo River where the rushing blue-green water churns through a spectacular rocky gorge. There are eight interpretive stations on the north side trail. Trail maps can be picked up at various business outlets in Kaslo including the SS Moyie, and at each trailhead. Mountain Biking
Kaslo sk8Park!
t's true—it just doesn't get much better than this! Mountain biking enthusiasts can find a map available locally that provides route descriptions and shows the way to 49 km of single track and 41 km of back roads right from town. If epic is what you are after, you can try Jackson Basin, a 40 km circle route that involves 4,500 feet of climbing, a high alpine pass, amazing views, ghost towns and a coffee stop. The guide by local rider “the bike guy” Doug Roberts, is a great start. To link up with local riders and for information call Doug at 250-353-2600.
ome down to the waterfront (opposite the ball diamond in Vimy Park) to see the most scenic skatepark anywhere and watch the skaters as they execute an ‘ollie,’ a ‘blunt slide’ or ‘kick flip.’ This park has a great bowl for the more daring to drop into and a wild street area with some sweet rails. You can skate hard in the beautiful outdoors and then jump in the lake right beside the park to cool down. From bikes to skateboards, the kids ride them all at the new park. All ages participate, and it is great summer entertainment for riders and watchers alike.
Wildlife Encounters
Kaslo Golf Course
One of the great pleasures of touring the Kootenays is finding yourself in a place where wilderness dominates the landscape. Catching sight of wildlife as you drive along the windy roads can be memorable, but there are some things you need to do to ensure that the deer, elk, bears or smaller animals continue to move through their habitat peacefully. Always reduce your speed in areas where wildlife caution signs are posted. These signs are placed in areas where there has been a high incidence of sightings and, unfortunately, collisions. Slowing down is especially important at dawn and at dusk or during the night (make sure that your headlights are clean and aligned), or while travelling on a road that follows a water source. Just reducing your speed by 20 kph will give you an extra 30 metres for braking. Slowing down and braking is almost always a safer approach than swerving. Enlist the help of a passenger to scan the sides of the road ahead of you for any signs of wildlife. If you see wildlife, be prepared to stop. All animals are unpredictable. Even if you’re sure they know you’re coming, deer or bears may suddenly decide that now is the time to make a break and cross the road. And if you see one animal, chances are there is another on the treeline, and they’re travelling together – check to be sure. Resist the temptation to speed up on long straight stretches – a surprising number of animals are killed on these few sections of road. If the worst happens, please report any dead or injured animals to the Conservation Officer Service of BC at 1-877-952-7277.
This is one of the oldest golf courses in the province — talk about mature trees! Not to mention the spectacular views of the Purcell and Selkirk mountains and Kootenay Lake. Outdoor Recreation- Winter
P
icture a winter wonderland of snow, mountains, hot springs and more. This area boasts downhill, helicopter, and snowcat skiing all within a radius of 2 hours or less. Cross Country Skiing is right in Kaslo's backyard. The True Blue recreation area has many kilometres of marked skiing trails – woodland paths and gentle grades as well as some good climbs and swift flying slopes. Snowmobiling is an important pastime here. There are many logging and mining roads in the high country for snowmobilers of all levels of experience and hundreds of miles of trails. More information can be found at www. bcsf.org (BC Snowmobile Association). Kaslo’s Arena becomes the focus of the lives of many families during the winter months. From toddlers on cheese cutters to Oldtimers hockey, the ice sees just about everyone in town. Teams of all ages use the arena and many tournaments are held there. Public skating is enjoyed by all during the week. The Curling Rink is neighbour to the hockey rink. With a men’s, women’s and mixed league, a junior program, a drop in night and an active social club...odds are you will find yourself at the Arena (on Arena Road) for one reason or another. Winter usually brings at least one safe opportunity for outdoor skating on Mirror Lake. There is nothing like a heated game of shinny between all ages, or the indescribable serenity of just skating at dusk on a lake in one of the most beautiful places in the world. After a day of winter recreation, grab a bathing suit (or rent one there) and head to Ainsworth Hot Springs. Steaming in the caves, or lounging around in the pool is the perfect end to a winter day.
Polar Bear Dip This New Year’s Day tradition gets the hardy souls out for a nice swim in the lake. The annual Polar Bear Dip is a fundraiser for the Langham Cultural Centre. The Langham houses galleries, a theatre, studios and offices, and offers art shows, workshops in a wide variety of disciplines for all ages, plays, movies, live music, lectures and readings. Take the plunge at 12 noon sharp (waiting barefoot on the beach for latecomers is not an option), or drink some hot chocolate with the locals and watch the fun.
Winter in the Forest Festival
G
ot the “blues”? Celebrate winter at this annual festival with sleigh rides, woodsman sports, snowshoe races, interpretive nature booths, and maple taffy on the snow. The event takes place at the Kaslo Golf Course. This fun break towards the end of winter is sponsored by the Kaslo Community Forest and is a great family event.

n June of 2009, the Kaslo Logger Sports entry was picked as a BC finalist in the Canadian TSN-Kraft Celebration Tour. The excitement and support built to a climax right up to the day when people could vote online to choose Kaslo as the winning community in the province. It was a tense time...and finally the word was out, Kaslo won! $25,000! What a boost for logger sports and Kaslo community pride. On August 22, 2009 TSN hosted a special edition of SPORTSCENTRE live from Kaslo, where they presented the cheque. The day was filled with sporting games, craft booths, kids races, a BBQ and more. Everyone celebrated and a good time was had by all. The $25,000 will be used to develop and improve the Vimy Park logger sports grounds. Projects include permanent bleachers, an administration and storage building as well as improved concession stands. Further plans include replacement of the 100´ tree climbing poles, and to upgrade the log rolling pond. Once the ground improvements are complete this spectacular lakeside setting will be suitable for many other outdoor events such as music concerts, plays and summer markets. Way to go, Kaslo!

n the heart of the Kootenay wilderness is the tiny village of Ainsworth Hot Springs, set into the mountainside overlooking the vast expanse of Kootenay Lake and the Purcell Mountains. In the early 1880s, Ainsworth became the first townsite to develop on Kootenay Lake when American born Captain George Ainsworth brought his business of transportation and mining exploration to the area. At the height of the mining activity, approximately 3,000 people lived in the town. As mining ceased to be a profitable venture, the fortunes of the area diminished and the population fell to the current number of less than 100 permanent residents. Today, it is home to the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort, developed around the original, natural hot springs. On a cool fall day or on a snowy winter evening you can relax in the outdoor pool and enjoy the scenic pleasures of the Purcell mountains and Kootenay Lake, while warm soothing mineral hot springs waters lap at your shoulders. Step out of the pool and wade through the even warmer water of the caves. This unique horseshoe-shaped cave is where the darkness, the mineral deposits and the humidity all combine to offer an exhilarating experience. A hot steamy, odourless shower of mineralized water falls from the cave's roof and forms a waist-deep pool, providing a rejuvenating natural steam bath. These springs originate in the Cody Caves area, directly above and to the west of Ainsworth Hot Springs. For a truly breathtaking scenario, try to catch a full moon from the pool on a bright, crisp clear night – a sight that will not be easily forgotten. Or after a day of skiing, sit in the pools and watch a light snow falling. The resort also includes a first class hotel and restaurant, and a gift shop.

J
ust two miles north of Ainsworth is Woodbury Resort. Woodbury began as a mining camp, servicing the miners who worked in many of the local mines, like the King Solomon, and nearby Grant and General Mines. It was also home for many of these men, who were lured here by the promise of a fortune in silver, lead and zinc. As it became less profitable to mine these metals the population of Woodbury, like Ainsworth Hot Springs, declined dramatically. Today Woodbury's fortune lies with its breathtaking location on Kootenay Lake and the great outdoors. Woodbury Resort and Marina is open all year. This four-season resort has everything from boat rentals to a restaurant. Fishing is excellent year round and at its best in fall and winter. Kootenay Lake is famous for having some of the biggest Gerrard rainbow trout, reaching phenomenal sizes of over 20 lbs, as well as Dolly Varden (bull trout) and delicious kokanee. The Resort sponsors a "Dolly Tournament" at Easter and a "Rainbow Tournament" at Thanksgiving, the second Monday in October. Fishermen come from all over to participate in these derbies. Woodbury is also a gateway to Kokanee Glacier Park and the Silverspray cabin. In summer you would access the park by driving up Woodbury Creek Forestry Road for 13 kilometres to the trailhead.

Cody Caves Provincial Park:
Kids love Cody Caves!
A Spelunking Adventure - Cody Cave was discovered in the late 1800s by Henry Cody, of Prince Edward Island and originally named Victoria Cave. It became a popular destination for adventurous residents of Kootenay Lake throughout the 1900s and was made into a Provincial Park in 1964. As the only low elevation cave in the West Kootenay, its guided tours make an excellent introduction to caving. Up to 500 metres of passageway are safely accessible for tourism activity. Visitors experience underground waterfalls, delicate calcite formations and ancient limestone passages carved by flowing water. One hour caving tours are a fun family adventure appropriate for ages 5 and up. Visitors should be reasonably fit and warm clothes and sturdy footwear are important for spelunking comfort. Three hour Adventure Tours are appropriate for ages 13 and up. For information regarding park access visit the Cody Caves website (www. codycaves.ca) or send an email to caves@netidea.com. “The Kootenay Adventure Under This World”
West of Kaslo - Sandon
In the 1890s, Sandon sprang into existence as Canada’s richest silver mining community. The frenzied rush and wild speculation that surrounded Sandon equalled the magnitude of the great gold rushes. Millions of dollars in silver, lead and zinc were taken out in the first half of the twentieth century. Before the bubble burst, Sandon had grown to a city of 5,000 with 29 hotels, 28 saloons, banks, 2 railways and dozens of stores and businesses. One of city’s unique features was a boardwalk built over top of Carpenter Creek which was flumed right down the middle of a downtown street! Sandon’s decline began in 1899 with a long series of labour problems, followed in 1900 by a devastating fire in the downtown area. Although rebuilding did occur, Sandon never again reached its former prominence. Declining metal prices and the exhaustion of several of the major mines caused Sandon to eventually become a near ghost town.
North of Kaslo on Kootenay Lake As you head north of Kaslo on Highway 31, you will reach the Lardeau Valley, leading to or near the communities of Lardeau, Cooper Creek, Meadow Creek, Howser, Argenta and Johnsons Landing. Here you can experience year round recreation in one of the most scenic areas anywhere. In late April and early May (Mother's Day) the giant Gerrard rainbow trout swim upstream the Lardeau River to spawn near the now abandoned community of Gerrard. Gerrard is located north of Kootenay Lake, 45 km from Kaslo at the south end of Trout Lake. The pavement ends at Meadow Creek and a gravel road begins, following the Lardeau River. Just about where the road turns to gravel you can turn right to visit the Duncan Dam. A little further north as you travel upriver you can pull off on a dirt road on your left and find the marble quarry, source of building materials for many of the area's finest buildings.
Today you can see the original city hall built in 1900, and some historic homes. The Sandon museum is open mid-June to mid-September, seven days a week. How to get there? See map page 28, directions page 29. Opportunities for hiking abound north of Kaslo. For details including updates on trail conditions, stop by the Visitors Centre at the SS Moyie.
Kokanee Spawning Channels You will virtually “see red” as this 11 m wide by 3.2 km channel comes alive with a million spawning kokanee (land-locked salmon) during the months of August and September. These channels were built in 1967 to replace the natural spawning beds destroyed by the construction of the Duncan Dam. Walkways and an interpretive site allow visitors the opportunity to view this incredible and spectacular wonder of nature. Occasionally black bears may be seen in and around the channel so watch out for the bears and, at times, mosquitoes can be annoying! The Meadow Creek Spawning Channel is at the north end of Kootenay Lake, 45 km from Kaslo on Hwy 31, just beyond Meadow Creek.
