Amy Elizabeth Underwood October 3, 1923 ~ January 5, 2011

Amy was born in Manila, Philippines and lived there during her young adult life. After World War II she married her lifetime love, Wayne Underwood, and they moved to Alberta where she raised ﬁve children. In 1966 the family moved to British Columbia where they lived and Amy supported her husband and family. Amy treasured God, her husband, children, her extended family, and her home. She kept a meticulously clean home where she loved to cook, hand sew, crochet, read, dance, listen to music, draw, write about and study theology, attend mass, and debate with her family. Amy also loved to shop and travel. Amy was self-disciplined, intelligent, industrious, curious, charming and mischievous – she had a zest for life, and was a born entertainer. Amy welcomed and sheltered many of her children’s friends, animals, and strangers that they brought home over the years, earnestly trying to help people wherever she could. She was loved and admired by many for the great teacher that she was and the moral values she upheld. A valedictorian and teacher of theology at the convent where she was schooled, Amy was also an active practical nurse during the war. She survived 4 years of active combat during World War II with her immediate family and eldest daughter Barbara Sager. Amy was a loving and devoted homemaker for 66 years. Amy is survived by her sister, Rose Nigro of Miami, Florida, and her children Barbara Sager, Betty Underwood, Ken Underwood, Jessie Woods, and Peggy Jones. Her 14 grandchildren: Teresa, Vince, Darrell, Steven, Colleen, Colin, Patrick, Kari, Rhea, Greg, James, Destry, Logan and Melody. Her 10 great grandchildren: Jessie-Charlene, Trevor, Bob, Jamie-Leigh, Dylan, Kyla, Maih, Melissa, Alana, and Sara. Her 6 great great grandchildren: Paige (Jessie-Char), Cohen (Trevor), Arlin (Trevor), Haden (Bob), James William (Melissa), Kaelyn (Greg). Amy is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Howard and Helen Underwood, as well as her dear friends Jenny Woods, Lauran Jolly, Ken Fair, and Donna Francis. Amy is predeceased by her husband Wayne Underwood, her eldest sister Jessie Strong of Miami, Florida and dear friends Vivian Natlock and Don Woods. Amy Underwood passed peacefully at her home in Slocan Park, BC on January 5, 2011. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Seed Exchange Day Returns To Slocan Valley

Are you thinking ahead to getting your garden in the ground? Are you looking for untreated heritage and/or locally grown seeds that are proven to be successful in the area? The annual Slocan Valley Seed Exchange Day is happening this year at the Slocan Park Hall on Sunday, March 6 from 1 to 4 pm and is a great opportunity for everyone to get in tune with the season ahead. The event, which is being organized by Slocan Valley Recreation, continues to be one of the largest seed exchange days in the Kootenays, drawing a wide range of organic growers from around the region. It usually features a large selection of local seed, heritage seed, root stock and cuttings. It also features information updates from groups such as Seeds of Diversity on the ever-increasing challenges being faced by those trying to maintain an organic garden. Everyone is welcome to come and buy, sell or trade at the event which has grown like the community it is being held in. From the new gardener just starting to work the soil, to those who have tended their gardens for generations, or those who create a variety of other products from the land around them, it’s a day focused on sharing our wealth. Kids’s Zone Buy And Sell On Saturday, March 5, Slocan Valley Recreation will once again be hosting the annual Kids’ Zone Buy and Sell. This popular event is being held at the Slocan Park Hall from 10 am to 12 noon.
