Preschool Storytime is starting again on Wednesday, January 19 at the Nelson Library. An endless variety of exciting books, lively songs, loveable puppets and easy fingerplays are all part of this program for 3 to 5 year olds. Our new addition to programming for wee ones this year is Book Babies and it begins on Tuesday, January 18. This 20 minute program is designed for parents and infants from birth to 12 months old. After several months of serious health challenges, Glen passed away peacefully at Kootenay Lake Hospital on December 9, 2010, at the age of 90. Glen was predeceased by his parents, William and Gyda (Tinker) White; his brothers Jack, Wesley and Gordon; his sisters Myrtle, Beth and Hazel; and his first wife Villa White. Glen is survived by his son Jack (Josie) of Townsville, Australia; daughter Geraldine of Brantford, Ontario; son Dan of Hamilton, Ontario; nephews Harry (Joyce) of Mission, BC and Bill of Clinton, BC; niece Susan of Powell River, BC; step-daughter Nancy of Nelson, BC; grandchildren Ron, Ken, Shane, Ben, Tracey and Lisa; and great-grandchildren Kendra, Kelsey, Jaime and Arcadia. Glen was born on March 28, 1920 at home near Girvan, Saskatchewan. He attended public school in Girvan and then worked on the family farm. In 1943 Glen moved to Trail to work in the smelter and in 1944 moved to Nelson to work at Boeing Aircraft which was then located in the Civic Centre. After the war he worked for CP Rail until 1980. Glen was active in the labour movement on the railway, holding office and attending conferences as far away as Florida. Glen enjoyed playing with the Nelson Kiltie Pipe Band and was their Drum Sergeant for many years. Remembering his time with the band always brought a smile to his face and a proud description of their competition results. Glenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hobbies also included hunting, shooting, and hand loading, and he was a lifetime member of the Nelson District Rod and Gun Club. Glen moved to his Blewett farm in 1974 and after he retired from CP Rail followed his dream to be a full-time horse breeder and trainer. Success followed success and he became known as an accomplished and respected horseman. It was truly his passion in life and he was a familiar sight riding or driving horse and cart up and down the roads and trails of Blewett. Through the years he also generously helped many young and not so young people get started with riding and driving horses. Glen particularly liked the Arabian horse breed and his pride and joy was his Arabian stallion â&#x20AC;&#x153;Marqueâ&#x20AC;?. They could be seen sometimes in a parade, sometimes on a long trail ride and sometimes out to the Dam Inn for a beer or two with friends. Glen raised or assisted with raising three families during his lifetime. Those children, as well as all who benefited from his influence while young, keep a very special and honoured place in their hearts for him, whatever might be the title of their relationship. As Glen matured, over the years he became more and more deeply kind to one and all, generously and thoughtfully dispensing his great wealth of knowledge and wisdom to those who sought his advice. He enjoyed his friends, valued them highly, and felt particularly loved and respected to have so many visit during the last months of his life. Glen will be deeply missed and affectionately remembered by many. Cremation has taken place and there will be a Celebration of Glenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Life at the Nelson District Rod and Gun Club on January 15th from 3 pm to 7 pm. Amnesty International Film Festival The big screen offers the big picture Saturday, January 29, when the lights dim for the 9th annual Amnesty International Film Festival. Two films in a Saturday afternoon double bill offer contrast and food for thought. At 1:30 pm, Neroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guests, filmed in India in 2009 follows the filmmaker, a Rural Affairs editor of a Hindu newspaper, as he examines the story behind the almost 200,000 farmers who have committed suicide in the last decade. Cut to The Yes Men Fix the World at 3 pm, a twotime festival award winner in which two gonzo political activists infiltrate the world of big business, their outrageous pranks highlighting corporate greed. By posing as top executives of the corporations they hate, Yes Men Mike Bonnano and Andy Bichlbaum don thrift-store suits, lie their way into conferences, and parody their corporate nemeses, from Dow Chemical to Exxon. Saturday eveningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fare begins at 7 pm with H2Oil, an examination of the downstream effects of the billiondollar Athabasca Tar Sands industry, particularly as it impacts the community of Fort Chipewyan. When alarms are raised about occurrences of rare cancers, industry and government cover-ups are exposed. At 8:45 Pray the Devil Back to Hell, the final film of the festival, chronicles the story of courageous Liberian women and their crusade to end a bloody civil war and mend a shattered country in a film that honours strength, perseverance, and grassroots activism. A full moon tracing shadows on freshly fallen snow, tea light lanterns glowing softly from the Trailblazers bridge and Christmas lights sparkling over the Kaslo River. This is what approximately 80 Kaslo residents enjoyed on the shortest day of the year when they came out to socialize with their neighbours and friends at our third annual winter solstice event. Thanks to the wonderful group of volunteers the trail from the highway to the bridge was cleared and sanded, the firepits and tiki lanterns were lit and the hot chocolate was ready to be served when the first friends began arriving at about 4 pm. While the adults socialized, the kids enjoyed sliding on the hillside or playing hide and seek around the trees in the moonlight. The Kaslo Trailblazers are pleased to sponsor this free annual winter solstice event and would like to thank the volunteers, members, financial supporters and community partners for making Kaslo such a fantastic place to live and raise a family. FortisBC Rate Increase FortisBC Inc. announced today it has received a decision from the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) for its 2011 customer rates, which will result in 6.6 per cent general rate increase for customers, effective January 1, 2011. As a result, an average residential customer using approximately 1,000 kWh per month may see an increase of about $6.36 monthly. The rate increase is required due to the need for ongoing investment in electrical infrastructure and increasing power purchases driven by customer growth. “FortisBC is committed to providing customers with safe and reliable electricity service at the lowest reasonable cost,” said John Walker, President and CEO at FortisBC and Terasen Gas. “We are sensitive to any rise in energy costs and work hard to minimize rate increases through prudent management of our operating costs and infrastructure programs.” The revenue requirements application reflects the expenditures FortisBC requires to operate in 2011. The company plans to spend approximately $100 million in infrastructure improvements in 2011. This includes the completion of multi-year programs such as upgrades to existing hydroelectric facilities as well as new construction and upgrades to substations and transmission lines. These investments have significantly improved reliability and will help meet the increasing demand and long term needs of FortisBC customers. FortisBC continues to help customers manage their energy use through its PowerSense program. The PowerSense program provides customers both financial incentives and helpful advice on energy efficient technologies and conservation practices that can reduce electrical bills.
