Kaslo Caregivers Sought An innovative educational program starting in early March will help caregiving family members from Kaslo deal with the loss and grief issues associated with dementia. “The dementia journey requires ongoing adjustment to many changes over a long period of time that result in feelings of loss,â€? explains project leader Dr. Penny MacCourt, from the Centre on Aging at University of Victoria. “You are witnessing the progression of your family member’s dementia. The progression results in many changes: in your relationship, in shared activities, in roles and responsibilities, in dreams and plans for the future, and in living circumstances, to name just a few.â€? The new “Coping with Transitionsâ€? program will connect residents with a skilled registered coach with extensive knowledge and experience in counselling caregivers of people with a dementia. “Coaching is being offered in both online and telephone group formats, allowing participants to share experiences and to learn from each other,â€? says MacCourt. The choice of phone or online groups provides convenience, since participants don’t have to leave their homes, and accessibility, which is vital for those living in rural areas. The format also provides participants with choice of location; they can work from anywhere that has a telephone or an internet connection. And they are assured of full anonymity and confidentiality. We have helped over 500 homeless pets in the past 3 years. But we can’t do it without you!

1.

Will I be stuck with the pet if it isn’t adopted? No. First, we have been very successful in finding homes for all our animals. But if the adoption takes longer than expected or wanted, we will move the pet to another foster home. We are a no-kill organization.

2.

Isn’t it too hard to let go of the pet? While it’s always difficult to say goodbye to a friend, it is much easier if you are happy with the pet’s new home. KAAP involves you in the adoption process, and you feel good about your foster pet’s future.

3.

Won’t it tie me down from traveling? No. Just give KAAP your schedule, and we will make it fit with our foster pets’ needs. We are looking for weekend-only and short-term foster homes as well, to help fill these gaps.

4.

What will it cost me? Only your precious non-renewable resource – your time. KAAP provides all the supplies for the pet. Anything you wish to donate will receive a tax receipt, as we are a registered charity.

5.

What qualifications do I need? A big heart, a home (or permission from your landlord to foster pets), a love and patience for animals, and time to spend with them. Let us know if you have any special skills or experience with animals, their training, or medical care.

6.

What if I need help? You always have a KAAP volunteer to call and discuss any concerns.
